Speaker 1 (00:01):
Jesus right. Yeah, America and.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
For nation.

Speaker 3 (00:16):
Jepher Thompson on one O three point five FM and
five sixty am Double Voc.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Sixteen minutes after six. Good morning and welcome to a Thursday.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
It's the tenth m man, five sixty am Double Voc.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Sixteen minutes after six. Good morning, and welcome to a Thursday.
It's the tenth day of the month of April. I
am Gary David has mentioned that Christopher Thompson is right
over there. Good morning, do you, sir? I got mentioned too,
didn't I? I yes, I believe you did.

Speaker 4 (00:44):
Think I'm on the list there, thank you, somewhere down
at the bottom.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
But I'm there. Well, there's only two spots to go
here anyway, how A right man, I'm good good.

Speaker 4 (00:54):
Ready for your your annual Uh And it was beautiful yesterday.
I don't know if you saw any of the Part
three did not. It's just gorgeous down there, right down.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
And they got earlier teeth earlier start times this year.
Then of the part three did not. It's just gorgeous
down there, right down, and they got earlier teeth earlier
start times this year.

Speaker 4 (01:14):
They Yeah, they're ninety five players. Oh wow, Wow, so
they had to phase in some earlier. So the the
honorary starters player Nicholas and Watson go off at seven
twenty five this morning, okay, and the first grouping goes
off at seven forty wow.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Okay, all right, well it is that time again, it is.
It's good to have you with us this morning. Uh,
there's a few things to talk about today as we
scan the horizon. There always are, there always are. Let's
get to it. The rundown, the big stories, the hot
topics for Thursday, April tenth. Well, here at home, as
we are down in less than a month away from

(01:50):
the ending of the State House session. Of course this
time of year, you know, we just to finish that up. Well.
One of the things, interestingly enough, that the Senate Finance
Committee dis approved is a budget with no ear marks.
Things interestingly enough that the Senate Finance Committee disapproved is

(02:12):
a budget with no ear marks. What no pork barrel spending,
no fat, no fluff, No hey, vote for me because
I did this for you. Well, this is all part
of the plan, is they try to figure out how
to I guess I don't know where this whole flat
tax thing is going, but at least for now. This

(02:34):
is part of the plan on how to get the
current state income tax rate, the top rate from six
point two percent down to six percent, and they're going
to do that by cutting out the pork barrel spending.
Maybe they should make that a permanent feature. Wouldn't that
be nice? Indeed, Yeah, in the twenty twenty four to

(02:54):
twenty twenty five budget there were more than four hundred
million dollars in in various and sundry projects, and that
just well, the previous year there was seven hundred million dollars.
So let's see the House passing a hands free driving
bill eighty five twenty five was at vote yesterday. So

(03:15):
this this bill free driving bill eighty five twenty five
was at vote yesterday. So this, this bill of the
Senate degrees and the governor signs, would keep you from
holding your phone in your hand for any reason when
you're driving a car. Now, again, obviously you can't text
and drive, but this wouldn't allow you to talk and

(03:38):
drive either, So you'd have to be using the speakerphone
or what have you. Or if you wanted a text,
of course, it would be a talk to text.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Do you ever do that?

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Talk to text thing. You get some interesting results occasionally.

Speaker 4 (03:50):
Yeah, but almost every car is you know, bluetooth connected
now to where you get sure you can talk on
your phone without using them without holding it up to
your ears.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Right, Okay, so that just happened.

Speaker 4 (04:02):
Will our insurance rates go down if that passes?

Speaker 2 (04:06):
No?

Speaker 4 (04:07):
Probably not well, I mean, but it's a legitimate question.
It would make us safer drivers, would it not?

Speaker 2 (04:12):
It would it? Would? You know? They say that that
somebody driving looking at the phone is six times more
dangerous on the road than a drunk driver. I believe it. Yeah,
and everybody's doing it.

Speaker 4 (04:25):
They had a distracted driver on three seventy eight yesterday
that caused an accident right up the.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Street from me. Happens way too often. BMW has responded,
you mentioned this yesterday, mister Thompson. Peter Navarro, Trump advisor
making comments a few days back that that BMW plant
up in the f bad for national security. Well, BMW
responded by saying, let's we invested almost fifteen billion dollars

(04:55):
in the Upstates and did by saying, let's we invested
almost fifteen billion dollars in the Upstate since nineteen ninety
two and we employed some eleven thousand workers, so shut
up basically in to borrow on that one.

Speaker 4 (05:11):
I think most of us here in the Palmetto State
would send to agree with that.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
The governor agrees with that as well. Nancy Mays, who
has been noteworthy. She has not shown up for town
halls she was supposed to host, but she did do
one yesterday after weeks of pressure questions by phone about
about about five of them. Now, there's been a lot
of talk to a lot of these town halls that
Republicans are putting on across the country, there's not I guess,

(05:36):
not five of them. Now. There's been a lot of
talk that a lot of these town halls that Republicans
are putting on across the country, there's not I guess
not many happening anymore because there's been an organized effort
to get out the left to these things to try
to make the GOP look bad on Q As expected,
the attorneys for Michael Mady have filed clemency petition for

(06:00):
clemency with the governor. He's set to face the firing
squad at six o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The Governor has expected,
no doubt we'll say no to this. Okay, are you?
Are you nauseous yet? From the roller coaster ride on
Wall Street a little bit? It's well, yesterday, the single

(06:24):
biggest point announces on truth Social that the the tariffs
would pause for ninety days. Well, there's actually still a
ten percent tariff underlying all that. But with the exception
of China, where he's up the any there and leave
up the any against us as well for everybody else,
those tariffs hitting the pause butt there and leave up

(06:47):
the any against us as well for everybody else, those
tariffs hitting the pause button for three months. And the
markets responded immediately to that. I have a theory here
on the mad genius that is Donald Trump. What are
they right down? Futures are off about five hundred points

(07:09):
right now, so maybe it was just the bounce, build
it overreach, the bounce came, does it bounce right back?
Or who knows? But almost almost making up the last
week's horrible week in just one day yesterday. Almost almost
making up the last week's horrible week in just one

(07:31):
day yesterday. Okay, Well, we'll see what happens for the
balance of the day, but right now it doesn't look
very positive. The House passing a bill yesterday, mostly along
party lines, that would clamp down the authority of federal
judges to issue nationwide orders. Okay, this is again we see.
We've seen this time and time and time again since

(07:53):
January twentieth. Trump orders something some liberal activist judge somewhere
in some district makes it rulling for the entire nation,
and people say, how can that be? Right? Well, the
House again passing a bill that would put limits on that.
We'll see if the Senate concurs. And again, speaking of which,
you got judges in New York and Texas now blocking

(08:16):
Trump deportations. This is after the Supreme Court ruling. I
guess I guess I always had this wrong. I thought
once a Supreme Court ruled on something that was it. Well,
not really. These other judges and laws and attorneys will
file lawsuits trying to find nitpicky ways to get around
what the Supreme Court has said. All right, friends, we'll

(08:37):
get to that. More coming up here on this. It
is the Thursday edition of Columbia's Morning News. Hey, we
appreciate you joining us.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
Every day, every hour. Real I'd like to stay informed.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
Everything you need to stay informed on all three point
five FMN five sixty am w VOC This is COLUMBI
me as Morning News with Gary Day.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
April the tenth time. Now approaching six forty two. Well
interesting testimony yesterday upon Capitol Hill Sarah Winn Williams approaching
six forty two. Well interesting testimony yesterday upon Capitol Hill.
Sarah Winn Williams, who served as well Director of Global

(09:25):
Policy at Facebook now known as Meta. She had that
position for nearly seven years, started back in twenty eleven
with the company. She had a few things to say.
She is a whistleblower. She wrote a memoir that Facebook

(09:46):
or Meta tried their darndest to to try to downplay,
calling her divorced from reality and riddled with false claims,
but that book still made the top ten still the
New York Times. I didn't read it, but anyway. She
testified yesterday about Facebook in China, and in William's testimony,

(10:11):
she claimed Berg and other executives at the company repeatedly
undermine US national security and betray American values. Repeatedly undermine
US national security and betray American values. Okay, betraying American
values as one thing, but did Facebook actually undermine US

(10:38):
national security tends to help outcome pete American companies. Uh yes.
Among her allegations is that Meta's AI model has contributed

(11:05):
a contributed that is significantly to Chinese advances in AI,
like that that deep Seek app, that AI app that
rolled out to what a month or so ago, the
one that kind of put the tech world up on
its collective ear there for a little bit. They said
they had developed it so quickly and so cheaply, you

(11:27):
didn't need those you know, expensive chips like the ones
in video makes living in the US after pressure from Beijing.
Well that's that's one thing, all right. But did Meta Jing?
Well that's that's one thing, all right. But did Meta did?

(11:49):
Did Zuckerberg and company actually worked to curry favor with
Beijing by helping the Chinese advanced artificial intelligen It's a
pretty bold claim and if so, yeah, absolutely, that is
undermining our national security. Of course, you know, watching the

(12:15):
dance that Zuckerberg has been making here as of late
from a guy who banned Trump from his site to
a guy who contributed to Trump's inauguration gala and suddenly
was seen all over DC along with Trump and others
of the administration seems like a guy you can't trust,

(12:38):
right when Williams said, referring to Zuckerberg, this is a
man who wears many different costumes. Yeah, okay, that's social media.
Traditional media note here too, to pass along Chuck Todd,

(12:58):
who is no longer with NBC. He left.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
Oh so he left the whole network. I mean, I
know he left Meet the Press, but right so he's
not on at all.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
I don't think he's doing I guess well he's. In
an interview yesterday on Piers Morgan Uncensored, he said that
the legacy media, the mainstream media, the Rush Law Rush
Limbaugh christened dry By media was subtle with its coverage

(13:30):
of Joe Biden's AIG law rush Limbaugh christened dry By
Media was subtle with its coverage of Joe Biden's age
related issues because they wanted to avoid the perception of
boosting Donald Trump. Duh. I think we already knew that,

(13:53):
as we know that the the mainstream media spent years
down playing concerns about the the middle acuity of the
form against Trump, and Todd now says that, uh, yeah,
the media made an air by not focusing on Biden's problems,
including you Chuck by the way, and Todd now says that, uh, yeah,

(14:13):
the media made an error by not focusing on Biden's
problems including you Chuck by the way. Yeah, it's it's
it's it's it's fat boy. They're coming out of the
woodwork now. Anybody and everybody that is, uh was was
involved in the Biden administration. It seems they've all got

(14:37):
something to say. But here's what we still don't know
about all this. Who was really calling the shots? A
question we asked on a daily basis for the last
year or so of the Biden White House, the Biden administration,
maybe even longer than that. Who is really pulling the
strings here? Do we ever f find out? Can we

(15:03):
keep something like that from ever happening again? But to
hear you know, Chuck Todd now say, yeah, well yeah,
we he didn't say we, he said the legacy media.
He should have said, we downplayed all this because, yeah,
we didn't want to give the perception of boosting Donald Trump.

(15:25):
In other words, of course they didn't want Donald Trump
to win regardless, no matter what, and they were willing,
even though they knew better, they were willing to not
even pay attention to Biden's issues because of TDS.

Speaker 4 (15:45):
So what happens if two years into this current administration,
Trump goes off the rails, will they cover for him too?

Speaker 2 (15:53):
I would think that would be an absolute.

Speaker 4 (15:55):
No, it's a legitimate question. It is you don't boosts
the next guy, So we'll we'll just keep it quiet
that the chief of staffs running the show.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
Yeah, yeah, you had Well, this was brought up in
this interview. You had folks like Chris Saliza, who was
the former c and mploitic Atlantist who put out a
piece back in twenty twenty one criticizing Republicans for saying

(16:27):
that Biden was in a state of decline. I mean,
you back and watch the clips over and over and
over and over and over again. The media, the Democrats
denied that there was anything wrong with Joe Biden until
they couldn't cover it up anymore.

Speaker 3 (16:40):
You're listening to Columbia's Morning News on one oh three
point five FM on five sixty am WVOC. Once again,
here's Gary David and Christopher Thompson.

Speaker 2 (16:51):
Fifteen after seven o'clock and a good Thursday morning til you.
It's the tenth of April the opening round of a
master's at a Guessta National. Christopher Thompson will be there
with updates here on WVOC and they'll join us. Well,
you can join you can join us right now. You'll
talk about it. Sports coming up in a few minutes,
all right, yeah, jump on in with O feed man.

Speaker 4 (17:08):
Yeah, they're actually is the player. Nicholas and Watson are
just about to tee off there.

Speaker 2 (17:13):
Oh oh, I see what you're doing over there, well
about ten minutes away. All right, All right, now, we'll
get into this in more detail a little bit later
on this morning. But to watch in the Marcus this
morning pre market trading after yesterday's incredible day. Now futures
are trending down this morning again, down about five hundred
points right now. But I'll be curious to see what
happens because of the news breaking in the last few

(17:35):
minutes that the EU now has agreed to five hundred
points right now. But I'll be curious to see what
happens because of the news breaking in the last few
minutes that the EU now has agreed to pause tariffs
on US for ninety days as well. I have theories
on all this, and we'll get into that a little
bit later on.

Speaker 4 (17:54):
Well, I mean that's the first change since yesterday. That's
what I was going to ask you, what has changed
between the markets going up yesterday and the closing bill?
And here we are this morning, before the opening bill
in futures were going down.

Speaker 2 (18:11):
Why. I don't have a good answer for that, because
it's not like the overseas markets didn't do well as well.
All the overseas markets were up a big time. The
foot set was up four and a half percent in
overnight trading. Trump pauses the change the emotion, the emotions changed, Well,
maybe they just thought they got too emotional yesterday. I

(18:32):
don't know. Drawing back again, all this all this is
really you know, this is all run by big, big
institutional investors. You see these kind of pointswing sertainly it
always is anyway, but certain by big big institutional investors. Me.
You see these kind of pointswing sertainly it always is anyway,

(18:55):
but certainly in this case like this. So we'll get
into that a little bit later on and see where
the futures take us. Have the news this morning of
the EU pausing tariffs on us for ninety days. But
I wanted to talk about this because I don't care
what the excuse is. I like the end result.

Speaker 1 (19:09):
Here.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
The City Finance Committee over the state House yesterday approving
a budget proposal that includes no ear marks, no pork,
no spending, to say, hey, look what I did for you,
now vote for me again. Now, these ear marks are

(19:35):
referred to as community improvement projects, okay, directed by members.
Remember that it was a story is it last year?
Maybe the year before, if I recall correctly, it was
Dick Carpulian who was shocked and surprised to find out

(19:57):
that his district had received one of these projects, these
these grants for community improvement. He wasn't even aware of it. It
was his own district. He's like, what where did that
come from? So now this goes to the full Senate
for consideration and things up and get final approvals and such. Now,

(20:20):
the reason for this is that this would budget writers say. Now,
the reason for this is that this would budget writers say,
put aside enough dough to bring the tax rate down
on top earners in our state from six point two

(20:41):
percent to six percent. Okay, let's not forget that's we're
still right there. Okay, we still have a two tier system.
We still have close to half of South Carolinians not
paying any state income taxes at all, and a rate
that was seven percent was down to six point two

(21:03):
they wanted to bring down to six for the next
fiscal years. That's that's still our reality. The whole flat
tax issue aside, which I don't know if you've heard
anything at all since since they hit the pause button
on that last week, not a word, but to get
the rate from six point two percent down to six percent,

(21:27):
that's where they say they're got to get the money
to be able to do that. Imagine what we might
be able to cut out if we did get it
down one of these days to three point nine to
nine or maybe two point four nine percent. These these
these ear marks one time money given to local governments

(21:51):
or nonprofits, and there were a bunch of them, and
the twenty twenty four, twenty twenty nine, Yeah, your guess
is it as mine. And part of that four hundred
million dollars in this year's fiscal budget was to work
to help eliminate the railroad crossings along a symble mind.
And part of that four hundred million dollars in this
year's fiscal budget was to work to help eliminate the

(22:14):
railroad crossings along Assembly Street. So the point is is
not all these are bad. Some of these are actually
quite good. It's the bad ones they always get our attention,
right but to their credit, but this is one of
the distasteful things that did none of us like. It

(22:35):
happens all the time to curry favor with folks, But
this is one of the distasteful things that did none
of us like. It happens all the time to curry
favor with folks back in their district, So they have
to find other ways to curry that favor next year
again heading and by the way, heading into an election season.

(22:57):
All right, I love the yeah, I'm saying this time,
and she loved the Post and Courier headline sea House
and Senate in years long battle over earmark funding to
cut more taxes for wealthy Okay, all right, well I again,
we're less than four weeks left in the session. If

(23:18):
this flat tax idea is going to be revived, I'm
guessing would need to be revived pretty quickly. Yeah, because
this wasn't a subcommittee that got it got stalled in
I don't know how you pushed through at this point.
I don't know how you push through something that requires
so much discussion among some big, high level committees as

(23:39):
this would do. Yeah, and of course remember for more
discussions over the prior couple of weeks that you know,
the three point nine to nine sounds of fantat turn
and you're gonna wind up what what was the percentage
of us that would pretty much, if you are middle class,
you're gonna wind up paying more than your paying at
your current rate. Yep? Was the percentage of us that
would pretty much if you are middle class, you're gonna

(24:00):
wind up paying more than your paying at at at
your current rate yep, Which that is a no go
for South Carolina residents. Wound big no one, big no go.
Uh yeah, they I don't see that getting done by
the end of this session. And again, well it does

(24:24):
beg the question though, this whole idea with that flat
tax about you know, if we're bringing enough money, we'll
get this right down to two point four nine percent
one of these days. That's a big maybe. But so
here's here's the question that deserves begging this morning. If
you get it down to two point four nine percent,
then yeah, they're tell us that middle class folks would

(24:46):
be paying less than they're paying right now. Well, if
we're having to cut out all ear marks in this
next year's fiscal budget to get it from six point
two to six, how do we ever get it down
to two point four nine? Yeah, this is an apple's
an orange is comparison. They don't. Really, these numbers don't

(25:08):
equate because of the way we we base our tax
liability right now on what our federal number is the
new plan, but based on the top line number AGI
without all those So you really you can't look at
these two numbers and say, oh, well, it's visit several person.
It's not, but still top line number AGI without all

(25:29):
those So you really you can't look at these two
numbers and say, oh, well it's visit several percent. It's not,
but still, how do you get it down to two
point four to nine percent? Ever, if that would wind
up being a lower effective tax rate on all of us,
if you're already having to cut out ear marks just
to get it down six two to six, just go

(25:49):
out on a budget right at the state house.

Speaker 4 (25:51):
Man, Well, somebody's got to figure something out and soon, because,
like you pointed out, what this is going up.

Speaker 2 (25:58):
Is not going to work. No, I think that is
dead the water, at least for this session. I still
say somebody needs to bring up the fair tax. I
think that is dead the water, at least for this session.
I still say, somebody needs to bring up the fair tax.
Let's do that, keeping the commitment.

Speaker 1 (26:17):
I love you, guys, twenty four to seven. Listen to
you every day half for years.

Speaker 3 (26:23):
One O three point five FM and five sixty am
w VOC. This is Columbia's Morning News with Gary David
and Christopher Thompson on one O three point five FM
and five sixty am w VOC.

Speaker 2 (26:39):
Seven forty three. Well a studying admission from MOI this morning.
Apparently I'm just stupid, stupid to the well the ways
of all things legal. I don't know. Maybe you thought
this too, you know, then that was it? Okay, whether

(27:01):
the court of lasts order whatever they call it, once
one's the Supreme Okay, what the court of last res
order whatever they call it. Once, Once the Supremes made
a ruling, than the case closed, done, finished, Okay, I'm
stupid because we've just had two federal judges, one of

(27:23):
New York, one in Texas blocked the Trump administration from deportations,
at least in a couple of specific cases. All right.
The first in Texas, in Brownsville US District Judge Fernando
Rodrriguez Junior, by the way, a Trump appointee, granted a

(27:45):
temporary restraining order on behalf of three Venezuelan nationalists. There
is an order blocking their removal under the Alien Enemies Act,
which the Supreme Court just rolled on, but not which
just those three, as well as the removal of any
other person that respondents claim or subject, so that allowing

(28:07):
this law to be used for deportations would likely cause
immediate and irreparable injury to the removed individuals. Allowing this
law to be used for deportations would likely cause immediate
and irreparable injury to the removed individuals, whom he said
would likely be unable to seek habeas relief. Okay. Additionally,

(28:30):
he says the substantial likelihood exists that the individual could
not be returned to the United States if deported to
this temporary stay. But just in this case. But again,
is this not a case of a federal judge making
a rule that would impact all these deportations. Of course,

(28:50):
in New York. They went judge shopping and got a
Clinton appointee siding with two Venezuela nationals whose attorneys argued
that they likely here we go again, wouldn't have time
to seek the habeas relief granted by the Supreme Court.
And they're ruling the other day. So, yeah, the Supreme

(29:12):
Court rules, and then lower is that these individuals will
not have time to seek the relief. The Supreme Court
rule of their ruling. Remember, this wasn't a total win here,
It was a yeah, Trump can use the Aliens and
Enemies Act to deport these individuals, but they kind of
had to have at least a some sort of a

(29:33):
hearing of some sort to deport these individuals. But they
kind of had to have at least a some sort
of a hearing of some sort. And when you're talking
about deporting hundreds at a time, well that slows down
the process, doesn't it. So as a result, now this
this happened really I think before these rulings came down yesterday.

(29:53):
But the House yesterday passing legislation that would limit the
authority of these federal district judges like those two right there,
at least limit them from issuing nationwide orders. This has
been the argument along from the Trump White House. These
federal judges with jurisdictions in their specific areas are issuing

(30:14):
rulings that affect the entire country, and that ain't right.
So this bill, passing mainly along party lines, would limit
the scope of injunctive relief ordered by a district judge
to those parties before the court. Okay, just those parties
before the court, rather than what's happening right now, applying

(30:38):
them to on a national basis, which is what we've
been seeing. My district is the entire country, which yeah, yeah,
who was it yesterday who said these judges need to
remember they're appointed, not anointed, because they ack like they're annointed,
don't they. Well. The thought though, is that this bill

(31:04):
is unlikely to make it through the Senate, where they
would need some Democrat support for this, and that ain't
gonna happen. You can bet your bottom dollar on that.

Speaker 3 (31:14):
Five sixty am WVOC. Once again, here's Gary David and
Christopher Thompson.

Speaker 2 (31:19):
We want to do what's right for our country. We
also want to do what's right for the world.

Speaker 3 (31:23):
The world is once again, here's Gary David and Christopher Thompson.

Speaker 4 (31:27):
We want to do what's right for our country, we
also want to do what's right for the world.

Speaker 2 (31:31):
The world is important.

Speaker 3 (31:32):
I mean, it's the world, right, and I think we're.

Speaker 2 (31:36):
Going to make a lot of people very happy.

Speaker 3 (31:38):
And I think investing in the United States of America
will be the greatest investment that anybody's ever made.

Speaker 2 (31:45):
The world is important, right, It's about the world. Good morning,
It is coming up on sixteen after eight What a
day yesterday, huh. So imagine being a person who was
just one post on social media can lead to That's
what we saw yesterday when when Trump announced state ninety

(32:08):
day pause for tariffs after in about a week. When
when Trump announced state ninety day pause for tariffs after
in about a week, the stock market lost to about
ten trillion dollars in valuation. Now, these this pause on

(32:32):
these tariffs, they're still think a ten percent underlying tariff there.
But the pause on the tariffs does not apply to China.
Trump writing on truth social based on the lack of
respect that China has shown the world's markets, that he
is the tariff charge of China by the US of
A will rise to one hundred and twenty five percent

(32:54):
effective immediately or yes, they was one hundred and four
percent now one hundred and twenty five percent. Okay, Well,
the Dow was up six percent, the S and P
got a four oh one K that's the index to watch,
up seven point two percent. The Nasdaq jumped nine percent yesterday.

(33:18):
Now this morning, even though we had the news breaking
about an hour so ago that the European Union has
also agreed now to pause tariffs against US for ninety days,
that didn't had no effect on the pre market trading,
which has been negative all morning, down five hundred and
seventy points or so right now. And we brought this

(33:39):
up several times this morning, and mister Thompson, each time
you've asked me, well why, And I don't know. I
wonder if maybe the markets had little buyers are more
from yesterday, Maybe a little over exuberance, just a too
big of a sigh of relief. I don't I don't know.
I don't know what to tell you.

Speaker 4 (33:53):
They've been crashing every day that these tariffs have been on.
Then they jumped the minute the tariffs are postponed. And
so again, what's changed this morning?

Speaker 2 (34:04):
Well, it's not because of overnight trading because global markets
have been traded up nicely. The Footsiet was up over
four percent of dacks. The German markets were up about
coase to five and a half, so the Asian markets
were up across the board. So yeah, I don't I
don't know what the deal is. I really don't know.
It's just a back and forth, right, So I don't,

(34:29):
you know, I don't know what's going on today. So
I don't you know, I don't know what's going on
today or why. But I've got some thoughts here and
I developed this thought and then I saw this piece
to the Treasury Secretary Scott Besson yesterday said that the

(34:53):
goal of all this was to have major trading partners
agree to negotiate after this ninety day pause was announced.
I'm just wondering, I don't know what if the thought
was originally, hey, let's shock the world. And again he
telegraphed this. He said it weeks and weeks ago that

(35:15):
April second was going to be the day he rolled
out these reciprocal tariffs. The question was nobody knew exactly
what they would be, and they're different for each country.
But I just wonder if the goal, the plan all
along was was to lay all this out there, knowing
the turmoil that would ensue in the financial markets, and

(35:39):
then hit the pause button. You know what about a
week later, right, to prove a point, a costly one there,
but to prove a point. But you know what you
need us.

Speaker 4 (35:58):
Was that the only point are we seeing the other
points in that it appears that this is all about China.
You know, we pointed our fingers at the entire world.

Speaker 2 (36:09):
We said that yesterday, you know, with the rest of
the world come to some agreements, but this thing with China,
this is the big trade war and this was the
ultimate target. Yeah, quite possibly so. And that to kind
of rub it in the face of Beijing and say,
we're gona drop tref for everybody else, but we're raising
it on you. I don't know the world has gotten

(36:31):
the message now, okay, And quite possibly had it not
been for all these years of democrat rule and the
thought that America is not an exceptional place, that America
is not the world's leader, had it not been for
all those years, and maybe we wouldn't even be in
this position to begin with, But here we are. Was

(36:56):
this the whole goal to get the attention to show
the rest of the world that you know, with a
snap of a finger, you know what, you all follow us.
We can, we can, we can mess up this whole
apple cart. Yesterday, the goal was always to get people
to the table, because let's face it, I mean, otherwise,

(37:20):
they're not coming to the table. Table because let's face it,
I mean otherwise they're not coming to the table. If
Trumpet said, you know, gone country by country down the list,
I said, Hey, send some folks over because we want
to talk about this discrepancy. You know why y'all are

(37:41):
charging us this so much more. We're not charging you.
We're charging a lot less or whatever. We need to
remedy this. Yeah, okay, well yeah, right whatever this way
he's given them no, no, no choice. Interesting too, how
a Golden Sacks who had raised their recession outlook to

(38:02):
sixty five early yesterday, then once the pause was announced,
they immediately scaled it back to what fifty five percent,
give or take. I think it was based on what
I mean, based on on one post. It's uh. I

(38:30):
think it's a good lesson for all of us. The
markets just do strange things. We're seeing again, we're seeing
again this morning with the now being down as much
as it is, and again all the the major indices here.
Markets do strange things. I met, I even saw somebody
speculate that maybe Trump was trying to put on a message.

(38:53):
Yet if I even saw somebody speculate that maybe Trump
was trying to put out a message yesterday, because yesterday
morning early he posted, now is a great time to buy.
And then you know he's gonna pause these tariffs, and
he was trying to you know, gain some sort of whatever.

(39:16):
But the markets do strange things. Now, if you're in retirement,
you're you're you're counting a don't freak out, and they're yeah,
with these do ways to get into the market, you know,
the robin hoods and all that stuff in the world.
There are a lot of people that are in for
the first time and they're yeah, with these do ways
to get into the market, you know, the robin hoods

(39:37):
and all that stuff in the world. There are a
lot of people that are in for the first time.
So take it from some seasoned pros here, not pros,
but seasoned veterans, old people. Okay, you know, if you've
been at it for a long time, you understand. Yeah,
you don't like to see this, but you're not You're
not totally freaked out like some people are. Call it

(39:59):
a warning shot across the bow. I guess the messages
have been sent. And now let's wait and see how
many of these countries come to the bargaining table within
the next ninety days. I mean best that it had already
said they were close to seventy. Thing goes with China, man,
I don't know. This thing is ratchetting up on a
daily basis. And have you seen the imbalance and trade

(40:22):
between the US and China. It's staggering.

Speaker 1 (40:25):
I won't live up the ship talking about what matters.

Speaker 4 (40:28):
This country is too great to throw over to communism.

Speaker 2 (40:32):
I love it.

Speaker 3 (40:32):
One O three point five FM and five sixty AM
w VOC. This is Columbia's Morning News with Gary David
and Christopher Thompson on one O three point five FM
and five sixty am w VOC.

Speaker 2 (40:49):
It is eight forty final FoST Well, let's see how
this news affects the at least the US markets today.
Inflation again lower than expected for the month of March.
The CPI number just released consumer Price Index falling at

(41:11):
tenth of a percent in March. That puts the twelve
month inflation rate at two point four percent, some thing
Joe Biden can never accomplish, just four tenths of a
percentage point over the Fed's benchmark two percent rate. So
there's some good news right there. Core inflation. That's when
they strip out food and energy that the volleteal sectors

(41:34):
uh two point eight percent annual rate actually increased a
tenth of a point for the month. But that was
the lowest rate for core inflation since March of twenty
twenty one. Okay, so there's some good news. Now Wall
Street do something with it, or are you just going
to continue to be in freak out mode. Here is
the scary part about all this is none of this

(41:55):
is based on real company valuations. You know, nobody's buying
us something. This company is doing great, this company is
doing horrible. None of that's coming into play here. This
market history is not based on real, real things, just

(42:16):
the fear of what might happen, and that can, as
we saw yesterday, turned quickly. Okay, well, we'll see if
the markets do anything with this piece of good news
this morning. Now, the House yesterday overwhelmingly passing the Hands
Free Driving Act. This is a bill. Yes, thank you

(42:41):
back at home now, you would not be able to
hold your phone for any reason. You wouldn't be able
to talk on your phone within your hand or even
rest the device in your lap while behind the wheel. Okay,
so maybe you get the speakerphone on. Is that what?

(43:01):
Maybe you're on speakerphone but you've got the phone sitting
in your lap. That would be against the law. What
if I have the speakerphone on, the phone is in
the other seat or on the arm rest, or does
it have to be like hidden away and coming through
bluetooth through the car side. Well now already texting his

(43:21):
band has been.

Speaker 1 (43:22):
For a while.

Speaker 4 (43:23):
I'll be honest with you, and I know this is
unrealistic to say, but I don't know that people drive
any less distracted when they're on speakerphone versus when they're
holding it up to their ear.

Speaker 2 (43:37):
Well maybe yeah, because let's make you you're taking your
mind off what you're doing behind the wheel, right, You're
focusing on a conversation, and.

Speaker 4 (43:44):
Especially if you know, a lot of times if it's
nine to five, you're getting a business call, You're you're
trying to calculate things you're trying to make decisions.

Speaker 2 (43:53):
You're not focusing on to have for lunch today? Could
be something more important. What do you want your pizza
the night? That sort of thing. Where are we drinking tonight? Oh?

Speaker 4 (44:01):
But still it's I mean, it's it's it's a distraction
in itself. But I know you can't. You can't take
the phone out of the car.

Speaker 2 (44:09):
No, No, that dead cows out the barn. So you
get answer the phone. You can do anything you'll want to,
as long as you don't pick it up and look
at it. Is what Bill Taylor says, and he makes
a good point. Uh, this is a guy that has
been pushing for this for for years now. He says
that somebody with a cell phone in their hand is
has been found to be six times more dangerous than

(44:31):
a drunk driver. But even in your lap, Okay, I
get if you're not holding it in your hand, don't
hold in your hand. But if it's sitting in your lap,
I'm not sure I understand that part of it. But anyway,
there you go. That's past the House. We'll see what

(44:51):
the Senate does with it. Who's said to be executed
by a firing squad six o'clock tomorrow afternoon, So that
expected now and also is expected at some point six
o'clock tomorrow afternoon. So that expected now, also is expected
at some point today or tomorrow. The governor, we'll say

(45:14):
no to that. And again he keeps seeing all these
articles about what a bad life he had, what a
baud upcreeming is, and it was doesn't excuse the behavior though.
Come on, no way to know how this is troubling
me this morning? What was it about two weeks ago?

(45:35):
You know, the big announcement everybody weighed in, trump in,
everybody weighed in on this one that a guy who
was said to be one of the leaders of the
MS thirteen gang in this country had been arrested in Virginia.
A guy that rides to the top of MS thirteen.

(45:57):
It's twenty four years old. Sounds odd to me, But
what do I know? Well, your teen, he's twenty four
years old. Sounds odd to me. But what do I know?

Speaker 1 (46:11):
Well?

Speaker 2 (46:11):
Yesterday the FEDS dismissed their prosecution of this guy. Now
it seems like the Trumpet administration wants to seek a
quick deportation for him instead. Something ain't right here. Now.

(46:34):
This guy was said to be a major leader of
MS thirteen. Bondi said he was one of the top
domestic terrorists at MS thirteen. Do we not want to
try him here? Why? Here's what's bugging me. We put
him on trial here, we might find out maybe this

(46:54):
guy wasn't quite the ring leader we were led to believe.
So it's instead just get them out of the country.
I got to probably get him out of the country.
But I'm a little and I may be reading this
all wrong, but just something seems a little squirrely about that, Okay,
just me And maybe the best news of the day

(47:15):
coming out of yesterday was Trump signing an executive order
to end the Obama Biden war on showers. Thank you,
oh the low flow shouting, the low flow stuff. Yes,
whether there was a dish washing machine, a shower, the
whole low flow thing that Trump called the war on showers.
Trump signing the Maintaining Acceptable Water Pressure in shower his

(47:36):
executive order. It's not a joke. And if you've ever
had one of these low flow showers, you know it's
not a joke.

Speaker 4 (47:43):
No, Although that wouldn't have been on my list of
high priorities for the president in his first one hundred
plus days.

Speaker 2 (47:50):
But still yeah, still, you got to work it in
there somewhere, right, I mean, come on, you can't even
get wet in some of these things. Now, it's just nuts.
So thank you for that, mister President.
