Gary David and as always, it'swonderful to have you join us here on
Saturday mornings to talk about your homeimprovements. So get anything's fixed up,
get anything's fixed you name it,getting things more comfortable in your habitat.
We'll be talking about that with TreyPowell from Mosquito Joe. He'll be joining

to have a little discussion about someof these diseases that these mosquitoes are spreading,
Like you know, malaria. Isit a problem here? We haven't
had any cases, but could itbe. We've seen it in Texas and
Florida. Certainly we want to bringthat up, and we chat with Trey
Courtney and Renee Avan from Diamond ConcreteSolutions. Next half hour will be in

with us. We'll talk about someof the indoor jobs they're doing right now.
Yes, concrete indoor. A lotof businesses are using concrete indoors and
more and more homeowners are as well. Maybe your home is built on a

But we get things. I startedthis morning with a not summer, but

well, man, I am well. Now you are the gutter guy,
Ed bea Roofing and Games. You'rethe head haunch over there when it comes

to all things gutters, and wealways get together and talk about gutters.
But we want to spend a littletime this morning and talk about the other
part of the business. And Iwill, by the way, in case
you're you don't don't don't know,this is all under the Anthony John Construction
umbrella, which does a whole bunchof stuff. Y'all have all sorts of

work in our places over the yearsand remodeling and fixing things up at all
and gray stuff. But I guessit was what about a year or so
ago, I guess kind of kindof split up and and and put this
under the umbrella Beaver roof agan guttersto be very specific about that part of
the business with which you're a partof, so gutters is you're the main
thing you do. But you're around enough roofs and at enough roofs and

at bit about roof and two right, well, I wouldn't say on enough
roofs, but I'm around enough ofthem to know at least that, yeah,
right, but right up underneath them, you know, with those gutters.
And they do go hand in hand. I mean, they really do,
because I guess you know, Imean, one of the one of
the big problems you see and alot of gutters is well, stuff it's

(02:35):
come off the roof, whether ornot we're talking about the rain, but
actually the stuff on the roof,that grit, yeah huh yeah, you
get that organic material coming off theroof, It comes down, sits into
your gutter. You know, it'stwofold problem. Fills up your gutter.
It allows when you see trees andother things growing in it. But every

(02:57):
time, every time that debris comesoff your roof, every time the shingle
grit comes up your roof, yourroof is getting just a little bit less
effective every time. Now again,you're not the roof expert, but you
know something about them. That thatgrit on that shingle, I mean that
that serves a purpose. It does, it does. Can't tell you what
it is, to be honest withyou, but I know it does purpose

(03:19):
right, it does. And youknow that's one of the main things you
look for when it's time to replaceyour roof is you know how brittle your
shingles are, and you know howmuch grit you have left. You know,
the less grit you have, whichmeans the less oil you have left
in your shingle, which is lessprotection. It allows them to break in
a heavy rain storm when you seethe or heavy windstorm, when you see

(03:43):
the shingles break, and typically that'sa a brittle, loose shingle. And
you know there's obviously here we getsome winds that it doesn't matter if your
shingles brittle or not. It maycome off sure, but you know we
get up to clean gutters. That'sone of the things we tell the homeowner.
If we find small pieces of theactual shingle in there, you know
it's it's getting onto time to maybelook at replacing your roof. I know

(04:06):
summer has told us before, becausewe always hear this. You know,
shingles with a thirty year warranty atthirty year to get a thirty years shingles.
But it depends on where you live, I guess, and around here
it doesn't sound like it's really possiblefor a for a shingle to typically last
thirty years, not in this heat. Huh. Well, I think you're

(04:26):
gonna get thirty years out of them, But are they as effective? You
know, are you going to thesame level of protection because you know,
you and I talk about gutters alot and protecting the foundation of your home.
Yes, but you know, theroof is protecting your entire home.
It's protecting your largest investment. Youknow, it keeps out water, heats

(04:46):
on everything. And you know,one of the hardest things for a homeowner
to run into is you know,we get calls at two in the morning
or you know, seven o'clock inthe morning after rainstorming. I have water
porn in through my roof, throughmy ceiling, and that's a that's it

(05:06):
can be a scary thing from ownerswho don't know where it's coming from.
You don't know how bad your roofis. Sure and We're one of the
few companies that will actually go outand not only inspect your roof, but
if a repair is warranted, we'lldo that for you as well. That
continues to surprise and I've done thisfor a long time. But but yeah,

(05:27):
I mean there there are local roofingcompanies right here in the Midlands who
don't do roof repairs. I meanto me, that's kind of like a
dentist who will be happy to pulla tooth but doesn't want to fill it.
Yeah, and and that's a that'sa roofing thing nationwide. Yeah.
You know, I sold before Imoved down here, I did sell roofs

(05:48):
and a lot of the companies therewouldn't do repairs. They will only quote
a full roof. Um, youknow, even with on the gutter side
of it. Sometimes somebody will askus for a repair and you can repair
it. But are you throwing goodmoney after batch? Sure? Right?
Yeah. With our guys, youknow, they'll they'll be upfront with you.

(06:09):
You know, I'll go ahead andtry to fix it for you.
May not be able to warrantee itif it's too far down. We don't
like to do anything we can't warranteeor yeah, we can go ahead and
fix it and you're going to getanother you know, maybe five years out
of it, maybe ten years outof it. That's that's worth the money
for the repair. But sometimes,you know, a thousand dollars repair to
a ten thousand dollars roof that's onlygoing to last three or four months.

(06:31):
I mean, you'd be better offputting that money towards your new roof.
And our guys are very good andvery upfront to tell you here's your options.
You know, we need to decidewhat's in your best interest. I
suppose he you know, at leastto me, and I don't want to
cast two wide of a net here. I know all of them don't do
it. But to me, theimpression would be that if I called a

(06:55):
roofing company because I had them,you know, what I thought to be
maybe a minor problem, and theysay, well, we don't do repairs,
will come out and look at that, They're gonna basically they're gonna try
to sell me a new roof andI don't need it. Correct And that
is not only I wouldn't say acop out, maybe because trying to single

(07:20):
out where the actual leak is comingfrom can be a long process. Whereas
if I can go out and measureyour roof, give you a price for
a new roof, and you doa roof, the money is better and
the work's less. Sure. Yeah, whereas you know, we would prefer
you not throw not throw your moneyaway on something you don't need to.

(07:42):
It could be something as simple asa pipe boot. It could be something
as simple as a missing shingle andnail pop. I mean, there's all
sorts of items flashing around your chimney. All those things can be solved,
you know, a lot less expensivethan ripping your roof off, having shingles
and nails and your yard for monthsand years to come. No matter how
well you clean up, you don'tnail always pops up. Whereas if we

can get up there pop your oldroof boot on or put a new perma
boot on, those things can getyou a lot of time out of your
roof and you can then prepare yourselffinancially to put a new roof on,
which may be coming down the line, right, isn't it true that again,
aside from you know, a stormdropping a limb on your roof and

(08:28):
busting a hole, throot or whatever. They usually if there is some sort
of a roof leak, it's goingto come around some of that flashing or
some of that stuff around the pipeboots. Isn't that the usual suspects.
Yeah, that's typically you know,you do have valleys sometimes. Um.
A lot of what we see isyou know, people have a roof leak,

(08:48):
think the roofs leaking. But youknow, going back to what I
know, going back to the gutter, if your gutter's full and the water
can't go over the front, itmay go backward. Um know, you
could have damaged a lot of whatwe see too is um, you know,
damaged end shingles. You know,maybe a limb didn't fall on your
roof and maybe it caught the edgeof your shingle and busted it up.

(09:09):
It made your shingle too short forthe water to properly flow over the end
of the roof, and it justyou know, water cohesion just then allows
it to run back under the shingleand back into your soft it. Um.
But ninety percent of the time,I would say it's going to come
from your chimney, your boot,your vents, and certainly if it's a

(09:31):
round of vent. To me,it seems like that's a pretty easy fix
because that's just like a piece ofwhat that is that rubberly goes around those
that that fitting. It's a collar, it's a it's a rubber collar.
You know. They make a permaboot, which you know are My guys
are very um, they're very fondof. It seems to work really well.
It actually snaps over the existing andit's a long term solution. Do

(09:54):
we put those on and we puton new roofs instead of just doing the
basic cheap small collar, or willactually put the full perma boot on as
part of our standard roofing package,so that only not only gives you a
better look on the install, butit gives you more protection for a longer
period of time. I want tobe careful not to because again you're especially
you know there's gutters, but you'vegot roof experience in the background. But

(10:16):
I know you guys, well youmentioned inspections. If you think there's a
roof damage, maybe there's no damageto the roof at all, but it's
got a few years on it.I mean, I know you do gutter
inspections. You guys do roof inspectionstoo, right, we do? You
know we do. We can doa free inspection, just tell you what
we think you need. Or sometimesyou need to have a roof inspection done
for your insurance company. That's amore detailed process with a write up that

(10:39):
does come with a cost. Butif you're like, if you call in
you say, you know my rootstwenty years old, I just need know
you know, am I coming upon needing a new roof? Do I
have issues right now? That wecorrect it? Will come out and do
that free of charge. Or there'ssome things that let's say you roof's got
some age on it and you're notquite ready to take that leap to replacing
it yet, but here are therethings that can be done as a homeowner

(11:03):
or with your service with beep roofingand gutters to kind of give it some
more some more added life. Iguess you know, I don't know if
you can extend the life of theroof when you get to a certain point,
but definitely, especially in some ofyour more heavily wooded areas, keeping
your roof clean of debris, keepinglimbs from touching your roof. You know,

(11:24):
a lot of people have those hugetrees that overhang the roof. Yeah,
well, if that limb is constantlyblown in the wind scraping that roof,
that's just your shingle grip coming offevery time. So keeping limbs and
other things from touching your roof,keeping debris off your roof, especially out
of your valleys, and and keepingyour gutters clean. Yet around here you

(11:45):
say I have this as your myhome, I gotta get up there every
couple of weeks, it seems likeand try to blow off as I can
that pine straw. And I've hadthat many pine trees in my yard.
But apparently it's just one of justa perfect spot that he'll drop that pine
straws. In those valleys, thatstuff just sits. There's what's the problem
with that when that happens, what'sit doing? Well, not only are
you allowing you know, you're notkeeping the correct direction flow of the water

(12:09):
because it's hitting a barrier and pushingmore water to the other shingles. It's
allowing it's told moisture. It's notallowing the roof to dry off. Okay,
you get a rainstorm, you seethe roof, it's dark, you
know, it's gotten wet, it'sdark, and a couple hours later sun
comes out, the roof is backto, you know, being dry and
regular. Well there, you knowthat moisture that got under that pine straw

(12:31):
doesn't dry It doesn't dry out asquickly. Not only that, it can
build up. You know, yourvalley comes down to a corner. If
it builds up in that corner,that water is going to eventually ride out
your facial board flow back underneath.So keeping your roof, cleaning debris,
allowing the water to flow over theshingles in the manner that is designed to

(12:52):
do without putting excess water on eitherside. You know, all those things
can extend the life of your roof. Got you now on the gutter front?
Um, I suspect this is kindof a busy time of the year
for you guys. Yeah, typically, Um, you know, economic factors
way into that. You know alot of people don't find a gutter to

(13:13):
be a necessity. Um, we'reseeing more and more necessity as opposed to
want currently. So it's not asbusy as it has been a year's past,
but it's still a fairly busy season. We'll get we'll get a two
week reprieve this current weekend next weekbecause school back to school. Yeah,
sure, people, people tend notto want to worry about construction people during

(13:35):
that time. Um, than withthe storm season coming in, we'll we'll
ramp up all the way to theend of the year. It's a it's
a good time to get it doneright now. And again it's I guess,
I mean you can really look atgutter's heath as an investment, right,
I mean, hey, what theaverage home around here? I mean,

(13:56):
what are we talking twelve fifty hundredbucks maybe for a home currently?
Now I'm seeing about a seventeen hundreddollars average. You know, it all
depends on how it's set up.You can have a very small home that
needs gutters all the way around,and it'd be more expensive than a large
home with a lot of peaks thatthe water only comes off on four sides.

(14:16):
Right. Well, you know you'relooking at about seventeen hundred dollars,
which is, you know, significantlycheaper than a foundation repair or even multiple
additions to your landscaping for what's beenwashed away. Yeah all right, Uh,

putting up Christmas lights. What weare training some some new franchisees for our

we're training some folks at our corporateheadquarters up in Virginia Beach. And so
yeah, we we're putting Christmas lightsup in August, we're taking them down

the next day. But it's justa training process getting ready for that season
that's coming closed Christmas and August.Yeah, we should remind folks that's well
once we get past the mosquito season. This is this is your busy season,
and yet hang into the holidays.It is putting up these Christmas tree
and I know that there are somefolks to get ahold of. You guys
like really early and get on thelist, aren't there. Yeah, there's

a we have a finite number ofdays. When Christmas gets close, you
know it's after Halloween. You havea very finite number of days to install.
So a lot of our existing customerswill get the lights up and in
October we don't cut them on andwe don't put up any greenery until November.
But uh, you know, justto try and get ahead of it,

because you know, when Christmas timecomes, everybody loves Christmas lights and
nobody likes to put them up andtake them down. So we do help

and removal and storage of all thoseoutside Christmas decorations. Yeah. Trust me,
if you if you drive around themiddle and see an outdoor light this

you know, play around with somedesigns and you know, we have a
simulator that will simulate what lights looklike on their house, and we can
show them several different designs and andyou know, come up with something that's

it's it's gorgeous. And also we'llfit fit their budget. All right,
So don't sleep on those folks,because you know if you wait too late.
Uh yeah, that that list fillsup quickly at out. So there
you go, all right, Wellwe got a ways to go for we
get there, obviously, we gota ways to go before we get rid
of these mosquitoes. I mean,here we are in August tray and you
know, the last time we spoke, the mosquito population was excessively high.

(19:11):
And while we we've had a littlebit of a break in the high heat
this week and a little bit ofbreaking the humidity. Uh, I gotta
imagine it's it's it's still a majorissue. Yeah. And we've had we've
had really had plenty of rain,which helps as well. And that just
keeps all those man made objects oftrash cans, buckets, gutters, you

(19:33):
know, kids, toys, grainsin the yard. You know, everything
we own will hold a little bitof water and that's really all it takes.
It creates an ideal breeding ground.And so the species of mosquitoes that
we tend to have the most ofhere in the Midlands is they're called container
breeders, meaning that they they preferman made containers, wet pieces of plastic

(19:56):
and things that are laying around theyard to to lay their eggs in.
Uh. If you go to thecoast and you're dealing with salt marsh mosquitos,
they only lay their eggs and saltmarshes, but here in the Midlands,
we have an eighties mosquito which reallylikes to lay their eggs and manmade
containers. Many they also do itin like a tree hole or a stump

(20:21):
that's kind of hollowed out rotting andit holds water. Anything that can hold
water, they're gonna lay their eggsin. But uh, those manmade containers
can really really create an ideal breedingground for them. And it's it's a
it's a constant challenge to keep outin that yard and keep on top of
tipping and tossing and you know,dumping stuff out and if you can't get
all the water out of it,then you need to treat it with a

(20:42):
larva side. And you know,that's kind of where we come in as
we we have a routine schedule wherewe come out every three weeks and we
find all of those things and weeither tip them over get rid of the
water, or we'll treat it witha larva side. So any any mosquito
eggs that are in there, ifthey're born, they will not develop into
a full grown adult. And youknow if they're they're never born, they

(21:03):
can't bite, right And you've thoughtus before, I mean even even a
bottle cap is you know, waterand a bottle cap turned upside down in
a backyard is enough to bring abunch of skeeters. Yeah, about one
hundred mosquitos out of a bottle cap. Wow. Okay, So we want
to talk more about the service youoffer, but I do want to ask

(21:25):
you about this trade because this isan issue that has popped up here recently.
And you know, again ironically enough, earlier this summer, maybe late
in the spring, we were havinga conversation one day and we were talking
about how, you know, inthird world countries, undeveloped or developing countries,
things like malaria are a big issue. And it seemed like almost you
know, the next day we startedhearing about cases of malaria in the US,

(21:48):
home grown cases of malaria. Yeah, we haven't had a case of
homegrown malaria that somebody caught from amosquito in the United States in twenty years.
Literally, two thousand and three wasthe last time we had a case.
Now, we have a lot offoreign travelers that catch malaria. They're

(22:08):
when they're abroad and they come backwith it. But it's not contagious from
human to human. It has tobe transmitted by a mosquito. And you
know, we our municipalities do apretty good job of keeping our mosquito population
down where we don't have enormous outbreaksof things like that, but they do

(22:30):
happen, and you always want tomake sure you're protecting yourself. And now
we've had numerous cases, some inTexas and in Florida of malaria, you
know, all this year and hasn'thappened in twenty years. So that tells
you the mosquito population is growing andthriving right now. We had a little
bit of a cool spring, butman, it's the heat is full force

(22:52):
and lots of rain and it's justan ideal reading ground for mosquitoes. Do
all variants of the mosquito the population? Are they all capable of transmitting malaria?
Or some do and some don't.No, it's it's really that is
the Naples mosquito, which fortunately wedon't have a huge population of those in
South Carolina. UM, but wedo have them. I mean they are

(23:17):
around, but are the majority ofthe ones we have are uh UM the
eighties mosquitos is the most common uhand also Culex. Now CULEX carries the
West nile virus. Eighties carry theZeka virus um. And so yeah,
they all kind of specialize in onedisease or another and for whatever reason,

(23:41):
you know, their their behaviors makethem more apt to transmit very specific diseases.
And I think you told in thepast you don't always get this directly
from the mosquito. I mean youcan get it from yeah, so go
ahead, Yeah, you get froma from a bird, right, I
mean, yeah, so it's thebird. The mosquito picks it up from

(24:06):
the bird and then trans transit uhthen and transmit its it to the human.
Birds are the number one prey ofmosquitoes because they are in the bushes
and shrubs, and birds spend alot of times and bushes and shrubs,
and you know, certain types ofmosquitoes, like lex mosquitoes will be in
treat in the up in the treecanopy where there's lots of birds for them

(24:29):
to feed on. And so youknow, you heard your mom say,
you know, don't don't touch thatdead bird. That's disease. Well that's
that's because it's pretty common knowledge thatuh, mosquito born illnesses. You know,
when you see dead birds, thatmeans it's usually a mosquito born illness.
Um municipalities see a bunch of deadbirds or reports of it, they're

(24:51):
testing them for mosquito born illnesses immediatelyto make sure that we don't have some
sort of an outbreak. So well, for example, as you mentioned the
zinc of our virus or um,the West Nile West Nile, which we
again the mosquito types we have predominantlyhere in this day. That's what they

(25:12):
would carry. It starts with them, it transmits to the bird or otherwise
to have that backwards that they pickthis up from the burden and they're they
carry or they transmit it to thehuman. Yeah, every disease is a
little different than it gets kind oftechnical and geeky, but you know it
will go from the mosquito will pickit up from the bird, and then

(25:33):
the mosquito will transmit it to ahuman. Okay. Uh, there's other
diseases like h triple E, whichis equine encephalitis where there is a bird,
a horse and a human in thesame in that cycle and uh for
whatever reason, and that is aextremely deadly disease. That's you know,

(25:56):
you catch triple E and you that'slike an eighty percent death rate. Oh
yeah, well yeah, very rare. I'm not trying to scare anybody.
It's very rare. But we dohave a few cases, you know,
um, you know sprinkled about theUnited States on an annual basis. It's
a it's that's a very serious disease. That's uh is you're not likely to

(26:18):
survive. Wow, let's put itthis way, Trey, you get a
better chance of getting that that youdo winning the billion dollars lottery. Um,
but then again, it's probably aboutthe same chance, about the same
chance. Okay, well we feelbetter about that. Then what about I
feel sorry for all my my lotteryticket buyers who All right, so,

(26:40):
so what about your pets? Ifyou get outdoor pets or maybe they're indoors
and outdoors coming in, can theybe affected by this and maybe transmit some
of this stuff back to their tothe to the to the owners. Um,
so I don't there's no dogs andcats are not really involved in any
disease transmission, but the biggest threatto them is heartworms. M heartworms is

(27:03):
a big, big issue, particularlyin the South. Um, and you
you really need to make sure thatyour dogs are treated for heartworms because if
they are outside, they are goingto catch heartworms eventually if they are not
treated. And way they treat themis a stomach You feed them that little

(27:25):
pellet every month and then they arefully protected from heartworms. Um. It's
that's a that's also a pretty devastatingthing, especially to animals. But if
you have outside dogs and an outsidethe statistic is an outside dog in our
part of the country has a hundredpercent chance of catching heartworms in five years

(27:48):
if they're untreated. If they areif they live outside, in five years,
it's one hundred percent chance. Themosquitos play a role in that.
Yes, yes, heartworms comes frommosquito. Can only be transmitted by a
mosquito. Oh and it doesn't affecthumans. We don't get heartworms, but
it is that is a specific caninethese that only comes from mosquito bites.

(28:15):
And it is so prolific that ifyou have an outside dog that is not
being treated by the pill you getfrom your vet and you leave them outside,
there's one hundred percent chance they're goingto catch heartworms in fight within five
years. Wow. Well, andagain when it comes to humans and the
viruses, we're talking about it's asyou mentioned, it's extremely rare. But

(28:37):
you know, so often we justthink of mosquitos as being annoying, but
they can be, in certain unusualcases, deadly. They are nasty little
critters. So now, I'm sureyou get asked this question all the time
when somebody talks to you about yourservice and they're saying, well, gosh,
Trey, it's great that you couldeliminate most of, if not all,

(28:59):
the mosquito population in uh, inmy backyard. But uh, what
if my neighbors aren't getting treatment?I mean, what what, what good
does that do? Yeah, that'sa very that's a very common question.
Um, because hey, if myneighbors aren't treating, what good is it?
So the airplane found the Freedom goingover. I'm in Virginia Beach,

(29:26):
so Oceanon Air Force Base is rightright right right there. Yeah yeah,
so you are asking me, ohyeah, about your next door neighbor's yard.
Oh yeah, yeah. So sothe product that we use, we
we larviside everything in your yard,and then the product we use will stick
to all the bushes and shrubs.So when we spray those bushes and shrubs,

(29:48):
it's gonna eliminate any adult mosquitoes thatare on that property pretty much immediately,
but when the product sticks and ittakes about three weeks for that aduct
to break down, So any ofyour neighbor's mosquitoes that venture over the fence
are going to be eliminated when theyhit those bushes and shrubs, and they're
gonna they're gonna just naturally go tothe bushes and shrubs for both food.

(30:12):
They eat the nectar off the greenshrubbery as well as shade from the sun.
It's just they're you're using their ownnatural you know. The way that
they react naturally to, you know, against them, is that we're spraying
those those those things. So theother thing to remember is that the type
of mosquitoes we have, they don'tfly very far. So the chances are

(30:36):
if you're in a normal sized yard, you probably are not suffering from your
neighbor's mosquitoes unless your neighbor has asignificant breeding problem. In other words,
they've got a pool that hasn't beenopened in two years, and that thing
is green and swampy, and there'snot as nothing's being done about it.

(30:57):
You know, that can bring enoughmosquitoes to affect everybody around them. But
normally the mosquitos that you're getting bitby are probably breeding right under your feet
or above your head in the gutter. But they don't travel more than two
hundred feet. So the fact isis that they don't go very far.
And if you're getting bit by mosquitoes, I can guarantee you there is standing

(31:19):
water within two hundred feet, butit's probably within ten or twenty feet of
wherever you're getting bit They don't liketo travel far. And if they have
water to breed in, they've gotfoliage for shade, other breed mosquitoes to
breed with. They just they're veryhappy to just loaf and be lazy.
And you know they have some bloodbearing organism, whether it's a bird or

(31:42):
a dog or a human to bite, then they're just very happy to live
within ten or fifteen feet wherever theyare born. Well, this, this
this brings a question to mind,then, because you talk about how they
their habitat is at foliage, what'swhere they they eat and when they get
the shade and all that. Ifyou've if you're in a yard where you

(32:04):
don't have any bushers or shrubs,do you have a typically see a lesser
mosquito population in those habitats. Usuallythat is the case brand new neighborhoods where
they've just clear cut every single treeand there's no trees, no shade.
Normally they don't have a big mosquitoproblem until ten years out, where the

(32:30):
trees grow up and they start gettingshade and a more a more inviting environment
for mosquitoes to thrive. Now they'llthey'll get up underneath decks, they'll get
fine shade underneath the soffit of ahouse and things like that. There are
other things that provide shade, butfor the most part, they like that.

(32:51):
Now that sometimes we find big mosquitopopulations in brand new neighborhoods. That
is usually because they have a defectivedetention pond in that neighborhood that is a
breeding pit for mosquitoes, and thenthey start just spreading out from that and
so the houses that are closest toit are the most affected by those mosquitoes.

(33:12):
There's a good chip right there.If you're looking in a new home
somewhere, make sure you're not newthat that pond. Let's take far away
from me. I hate to saythat, but yeah, you're you're dead
on U. Just seeing what I'veseen, I wouldn't. I would not
buy a house that was right backingup to a detention pond because I rarely

(33:34):
see any of them that are meatcode and can be They should be able
to be moved within twenty four hours. You should be able to run a
lawn moore through it twenty four hoursafter it rains. They collect the water
and slowly disperse it and they're drywithin twenty four hours. And they almost
never or that way. The centerof that thing usually holds six or eight
inches of water. They got cattails growing and it's just becomes a swamp.

(33:58):
And that is ideal. That isexactly what mosquitoes want to breed in.

It's good morning to you both.Hey, good morning. Good to see
you again. Renee, it's beena bit a little while. Yeah,
I thought I sent the real boss. No, it's the busy seasons.
He's got lots to do. Onesmart man, one smart man. You
know, Courtney, you were herewith this couple weeks ago and we were

(37:21):
discussing, I mean, the theweather. This summer is taking a toll
on on everybody. Yeah, everywhere, I think you know in the news
it's sort of worldwide global, oneof the hottest summers we've had. So
Yeah, and while temperatures this pastweek have been a little lower force,
it's still you know, incredibly especiallyfor work it's being done outside. And

(37:44):
yes, with what what y'all dowith concrete, you got you got your
crews out there, you know,all day long on concrete, which is
gonna be hotter than being anywhere else. If you doubt me, just go
out to the parking lot out backhere at the radio ranch degrees out there
to try an egg out there.So as a result, a lot of
your focus has turned to more insidework until things start to cool off a

(38:07):
little bit more. And it's notjust a heat. I mean, you
get the afternoon thunderstorms, and wellthat creates problems, right right, Yeah,
Moisture is definitely not a friend.And then also you know products typically,
you know you've got a limited amountof time to get those installed correctly
at a certain temperature, and sowe're always trying to keep it in an

(38:28):
ambient temperature if possible. The surfacetemperature of the actual concrete floor that you're
working on totally matters and how it'sgoing to interact with the products. And
if the products have been sitting outsidein the sun, that's not good either.
So there's a number of things inaddition to weather, in addition to
heat and rain, humidity, depoint, all those things are a factor.

(38:49):
And so we really have been superblessed this summer, I think,
to have a lot of indoor projectsand towards this really end of the hot,
hot summer part, we've been ableto keep our guys inside for weeks
at a time working on large indoorprojects. And you may think it first,
Okay, we're talking about concrete.I'm thinking driveways, sidewalks, pull
decks and such, but there's alot of indoor application for what you do

(39:10):
as well. Yeah, absolutely,Yeah. I think we see a trend
where a lot of companies or churchesgo towards stain and seal floors, high
end marble floors. So we definitelysee a trend there, and I think
a lot of people don't really knowthat we can do like an overlay inside

(39:34):
as well, so it's not justfor outside. So we're definitely very blast
in terms of that, but bealso very blast that all our customer they
have outside jobs with us, they'revery fair to us in terms of understanding
the health of our employees, sothat's really important to us that they are
not overheated and hydrated and stuff likethat. So I think we're very blessed

(40:00):
Tattoos we're able to push a coupleindoor jobs into the really high head situation
we have right now, and umyeah, I think, um that's um
something really important to us too.I guess I'm thinking that initially is as
a homeowner. But yeah, alot of businesses have concrete inside. But
more and more homes are going thatway too, Yeah for sure. Yeah,

(40:22):
And I think a lot of businessowners that are also homeowners, right,
maybe they have a basement property offthe that's maybe waterfront where the slope
of the home goes down the backtowards some water, maybe Lake Murray or
Lake Catherine, what have you here? And so you know, it's it's
good even though this is the homeimprovement show, right, it's great for
us to be able to talk tothose homeowners who might also be business owners

(40:45):
that we have solutions for both ofthose types of applications, indoor and outdoor.
Um that something is simple as youknow, a basement area with a
beautiful hardwood overlay to really match theother finishes in the house, or even
tile tile is a tile or aslate look is also really popular inside in
basement areas, sun rooms, mudrooms, porches, um garage floors,

(41:07):
all of those are able to havea beautiful coating to change the look and
function of those spaces. And thenyou know, if you've got a church
space or a showroom space, maybean office space, or a workshop space,
a barniumenium, right, all ofthose are spaces where we can also
do these beautiful overlays on the interiorof your business our home. Let me

(41:30):
get back to those basements for asecond again. Here in South Carolina,
not a lot of homes have basements, but some certainly do. And you
have maybe those situations in particular whenyou've got a home built on or a
business even on kind of a slope, that then open things up for that.
But from the perspective of you know, basements, typically you can wind
to a lot of issues with basements, with flooding and such, moisture moisture.

(41:53):
So by coming in and doing workon a concrete and a basement,
can that prevent potential problems with theoverlays and the staining and all that you
do talk about that, Yeah,for sure, we do have all materials
stay waterproof, moisture proof the floorswhen we apply. So that's a huge

(42:15):
benefit um in terms of materials weuse. So and do you do that
for every job the basement or anything, not every job. If we if
we work with just cement it umit pretty much helps themselves. Once at
the sea law on top of it, it makes it waterpoof as well.

(42:35):
But when we do a flake floor, we do have some materials stay moisture
proof. So yeah, so itreally depends on what the customer wants.
If they're having a moisture issue andthey want us to waterproof an area.
We even have a product that cango on the walls of the basement walls
and floors and I mean, youcould fill that that room up with water
and it won't weak. Right,it's not good, it's going to be
it's going to be really protected.Um But and you know, again that

(42:59):
can be it's not a hugely expensivecost as compared to having a flood issue
or an actual you know, rotmoisture mold issue. That remediation can be
horribly expensive compared to what we do. But again, not every floor is
going to need that, not everycustomer is going to need that, And
so we manage that with the customerdepending on what they're looking for, what

(43:19):
they want for performance, what solutionthey're trying, what problem they're trying to
solve, So we have products forthat. But then you know, there
is some moisture control to literally everythingwe do because you are if you're prepping
the floor properly and those and puttingthose materials down properly like we are trained
to do. Then that is automaticallygoing to latch into and soak into the

(43:44):
pores of that very porous concrete thatwants to find water, and it's going
to protect from the water, youknow, water getting through. Now,
if you have just standing water,it's always good to clean that up,
right, But we do have alot of solutions just by the nature of
what we do your cover the floorsyou have and protecting them with what we're
doing and hopefully making them more beautiful. You've just been something about the purses

(44:05):
of concrete, and I guess layfolks who don't do this for a living.
Obviously, concrete is hard, andconcrete is indestruct well, it's not
indestructible, but we don't, Oh, I don't think we realize what damage
can be done just by water onthat con Yeah, concrete is a sponge
and if you don't put you know, a nice top coat with a couple
of layers on that sponge, it'sgonna soak up water and that's gonna cause

(44:29):
mold, mildew, cracking for sure, and you know, concrete cracks.
It's not a matter of if it'sa matter of wind, and so if
you can protect that and extend thelife of it, then we certainly have
the solutions for that. And ofcourse, again going back to basements for
a moment, if you yeah,if you got mild toWin concrete outside,
that's one thing, but if you'vegot an abasement, that's something else.
Yeah. Yeah, And I meanyou're right, this is not the area

(44:51):
where the word basement is really popular, right, but we do have you
know, we're in the in theMidlands. We have some rolling hills here.
We do have water front property aroundus, and so that's usually got
a slope to it or some sortof a grade to it, and so
a lot of people, you know, they may have that first floor up
at the top front of the house, but they've got two floors off the
back, and so we really considerthat bottom floor the basement. Um,

(45:15):
that is definitely what we're talking abouthere. A lot of homeowners or even
business owners have a real need forflooring solutions for that type of property.
You were telling me before the segmentthat you were I guess last week you
guys are constantly you're you know,getting training from your your your vendors,

(45:35):
your suppliers and such new things comingout and all that, and I guess,
yeah, I got you go lastweek. We usually send our team
or you know, Renego's with theteam. Um I did a lot of
those trainings really in twenty twenty andtwenty twenty one at the beginning of the
business. Um so I haven't beenon a bunch of you know, actual
product trainings in a while. SoI actually got to go ten one with

(45:57):
our one of our main suppliers week, and I, you know, re
brushed up on what I already know. And I was happy to realize that
I still know a lot, right, I'm not behind the curve, but
I got to learn a lot ofnew material and just you know, education
for our customers. Education about newproducts and new technology that's out there,
better application techniques, different equipment thatmight be new, lots of creative ways

(46:22):
to make beautiful options for homeowners thatthey don't even know about. I mean,
we just did a beautiful kitchen indooragain. They I guess removed the
floor coverings that they had and hadus come in and grind that beautiful concrete
slabdown and they've got a black andwhite metallic marble kitchen floor now that is

(46:44):
really well protected and just really enhancesthe other yeah finishes in their home,
the other black and white elements andwhatever I guess brass and mixture of um,
you know metal that they used also. It's just absolutely stunning. So
yeah, training those important. Ithink that makes a huge difference, UM,
for a lot of companies to sentyou employee two trainings, it's super

(47:08):
important. I think it's a greatinvestment for us. Are you noticing again
you've been doing this since about twentytwenty or selling concrete solutions. Have you
seen a lot of new products,new techniques roll out since you started the
business. I mean it sounds likeever evolving kind of. It's always there's
a lot of innovation, um.And you know, there's great suppliers out

(47:30):
there that they are maybe even producingsome of their own brands as well.
And the quality control that we seethem doing and the innovation that we see
them doing the testing of those productsis really incredible. And then that trickling
down to us is really important becausewe're boots on the ground, and so
if we ever have an environmental youknow, interaction with a regular you know,

(47:51):
step by step install then we're ableto troubleshoot because those you know,
those no floors is identical. Everysingle one of these is different. It's
really a one of a kind sortof a work of art. Depending on
what you choose, and so basedon the age of your concrete and the
conditions around you and maybe the temperatureoutside and um, different set of hands,
right, it's always going to bea little bit different scenario. And

(48:15):
so understanding from the suppliers or themanufacturers how these products really work, getting
improvements. There's they're always making improvements, coming out with new things, new
colors, what have you. Andso for us to be able to offer
that to our customers is fantastic.But for us to really be experts in
the products and how they work,um, that's important for the owners and

(48:37):
the and the installed team, right, for us to all have a really
good understanding of those things. Thatway we can educate our customer and they're
they're happy there. They know whatto expect. And did you get as
you say that, there's so manyways you can go renee, Oh yeah,
let's go at home that and I'msure This happens all the time.

(48:57):
You know, you somebody they wantto do something. I'm not quite sure
what. Yeah, yeah, thatcould be a long conversation, it could,
but it could be a very funconversation too, So I mean,
we all see it's pretty positive.We have some good ideas all the time.
The design element is fun for everybody, a lot of fun. Yeah,
So that's pretty much what I enjoythe most to have those conversations with

(49:21):
a customer and come up with somecool ideas and it's it's pretty cool.
So it's nice when they give youa little bit of latitude to be able
to be creative too. You know, a metallic marble floor is never going
to come out exactly like a pictureexactly the same. Um. It really
is amazing how those designs, umthey sort of find themselves once the products

(49:43):
go down. And so we dohave to educate the customer that, you
know, this is your You needto understand that we're gonna this is a
little bit of artistry here, andit's going to come out how it comes
out, but we're going to tryto get it as close to what you're
looking for as possible. Just understandit's it's basically a mural on the floor.
So yeah, but the innovation that'sout in the industry right now is
really exciting. And obviously we tryto work with people that are doing the

(50:07):
testing and the quality control that cangive us the data sheets on products that
we can know how these things aregoing to interact and then we can decide
what we want to work with.We've definitely worked with some products that we
don't use anymore, and we recommend, you know, if the customer asked,
hey, I heard about this brandand I want to use this,
sometimes we say, all right,we'll sign on the dotted line that we

(50:28):
gave you a disclaimer. First,we don't like this stuff, we don't
want to use it, but ifyou want us to use it, we
will. Typically we're able to steercustomers away from stuff that we you know,
have used before it doesn't perform aswell. And we have really good
brands that we like to work withand we love to see new stuff that
they come out with. So again, we've talked today about to indoor jobs

(50:49):
and for the reasons why we startedthe segment because of the weather. I
mean, yeah, I can seea scenario where okay, maybe you wanted
to do an outdoor job, butwhen you get you never know, in
the afnoon thunderstorms and all that.I mean, it could set your back
to square one. I suppose ina most extreme example, right, I
mean, you get a job startedand boom, here comes a heavy downpour.

(51:09):
Oh yeah, yeah yeah, hopefullynot back to square one, but
certainly some repetition of steps. Youknow, you might have to have to
grind a layer off and put downanother layer, or you might have to,
um, you know, re securethe area that's been taped off because
you know, the plastic tape oryou know, protecting other areas of the
property has gotten blown away. Andso that that time is you know,

(51:30):
that's that's takes time away from us, and it takes a time away from
the customer on a finished job.And so we really do, um,
we're hoping for an easy fall interms of that kind of weather. But
you know we can do it nomatter what. You just have to be
expecting that. You know, maybeyou're going to have some elements that might
interrupt outdoor work. Right now,Well, we're all hoping for a better

(51:52):
fall. Yeah, Well, Ido like the heat. It's just a
little bit too hot fall guys,And I think safety is really important.
And if any companies out there andthey do the same thing we do,
hope they do the same for theiremployees. I mean, safety is really
really important, absolutely all right.So those indoor jobs are hot right now

(52:15):
because they're indoors. Yea, theoutdoor stuff coming again, you're still you
still do some of that, butbut the bulk of us coming again real
