Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning. It's Schmitty live on TikTok right now at
(00:03):
schmid in the Midt. I'm back. I'm feeling good. A
couple of days off, couple of none, three am alarms.
It was nice. So over the weekend and then I
took yesterday off, we did our annual girls trip and
we went to Macanaw Island. So we started a few
years ago. One of my really good friends is an
avid camper, so we did some cold weather tend camping.
(00:26):
Then the next year we actually did it in a camper,
and then by the third year, like you know, we're
more hotel people, so we should just kind of figure
out a fun place to go, and so kind of
back in an Island was born. And we didn't want
to necessarily go in the summertime it's really busy. I
mean it's beautiful, it's fabulous. But we decided to go
closing weekend last year and it was phenomenal because you
(00:51):
just see a different side of the island. Number one,
like everything's way way lower priced. They're just trying to
kind of get rid of everything, right because there's only
I think one or two hotels, maybe a restaurant and
a school that stay open on Macina Island in the winter,
so we were getting like full pores of wine. Everybody
was in a super great mood. So we decided to
(01:12):
do that again this year, only this was the weekend
before closing weekend, so instead it was more just like
people really frustrated because it's been a really long tourist season.
But I got to tell you, one of the best
travel hacks is to do anything off season. You just
get so much of the drama. Like we went out
to Down's Irish pub Friday night, delicious espresso martini and
(01:37):
got to talking with our waitress because it wasn't that busy.
It turns out she graduated from U of M in
molecular biology. Her grandma lives on the island, so she
came up to work where she met her boyfriend. This summer,
they're moving to Hawaii for the winter. Then we went
down to the Horn, met another awesome waiter who talked
about buying his first home actually on the island. Everybody
(01:59):
just was so relaxed and care free. It was super
cool and you meet so many different people. I didn't
realize for a long time, I always thought Macna Island
was just kind of like manned by Michigan people, right.
We met somebody from Alabama, somebody from Tennessee. We met
a bunch of people from Jamaica that come up every
summer and do this and then just in case you're
(02:22):
looking for like a plan B in life, a ton
of these people were talking about how they literally work
the like April to October time on the island, save
up all that money, and then just kick back and
relax the other six months. It was so fascinating, and
I have to tell you one of the best things,
(02:43):
honestly is going in the fall. So the weather was
looking kind of like sketchy for us. We were thinking
out loud, are we gonna do this? Isn't gonna be fine?
And the weather was wonderful. We had a stunning sunset
Friday night. I love kind of the chillier air makes
the bike rides easier, but you guys find yourselves an
outdoor hot tub with an umbrella over it. We stayed
(03:03):
at the island house and they had an outdoor hot tub.
We went outside just as like the skies opened, so
we're completely dry in this super cozy hot tub. As
it's just like rain and leaves falling around us. I've
never found more basic in my life. It was so fantastic.
But seriously, the travel hack of all travel hacks is
(03:26):
go off Season. I mean I couldn't believe it, Like
Bike Reynolds, even the ferry ride. I mean it was
all so perfect. Go off season and just a shout
out to everybody on the island. Oh my gosh. One
of our carriage riders, I asked if he was romantically involved,
because one of our friends is newly single, and he
was like, yes, he married one of the school teachers
(03:49):
on the island. So anyway, if you're wondering how obnoxious
it sounded for all four girls for an entire weekend together,
we just kept going, oh the entire time. It was fantastic.
So there you go. That is my big travel hack.
Go off season, anywhere you want to go, Cedar Point,
down South, spring break, take the kids out like a
week early. It was so cool this weekend. And I
(04:12):
did put a list of my favorite spots up West
Michigan star dot com, a few kind of off the
beaten path. Even if you've been to the island, you
should really check it out because oh, Chef's kiss so good.
