(00:00):
I was expecting to have someone calland say patching you through to mister Mike
Love. But you handled this yourselflike you don't have people calling me to
tell me that you're ready. That'svery impressive. Oh I have done that
on occasion, but not this particularone. Well, I appreciate it,
and thank you for coming to ourstate. You're bringing a little summer cheer
(00:22):
to this cold weather. It wastwenty five degrees this morning, mister Love.
Twenty five degrees. Well, that'skind of like my home which is
in Lake Tallow up in the mountains, and we had seven hundred inches of
snow last season. That's a lotof snow. Well, you're going to
bring some of the beach Boys funwith the Rascals Wednesday the fifteenth to the
(00:45):
Toyota Oakdale Theater. And you know, speaking from a fans point of view,
I don't know how much you canappreciate it. I'm sure at this
point in your life you can.But to go into the audience and hear
these songs and to know them,to feel how comfortable they are, and
to feel the joy in our heartswhen we hear these songs, it's just
(01:06):
like it's just what the world needs, you know. It's just that music
power. It takes over everything, and it's just such a wonderful feeling to
see you perform. Well, it'sa wonderful thing to be able to perform
most songs and to have them appreciatedlike they are. Yeah, we notice
multiple generations coming out and enjoying thisshow together, and it's really a lot
(01:30):
of fun, fun, fun,Yes it is. And a lot of
the songs that you sing, youknow, have taken on their own lives,
like you know, Kokomo and justGod only knows, and all of
those songs, they all have theirown little lives in themselves. Does it
fascinate you today to see them bereincarnated each new generation in different ways,
(01:51):
from video games to TV shows,to commercials to anthems to even college kids
cheering along with them. Well, even fun fun fun was used in the
promotion of the Barbie movie. Soit's pretty amazing that year after year there
are always ways that our music findsthis way into various places like you just
(02:12):
mentioned. So it's pretty darn neat. It's a blessing because it's a family
hobby that became a profession because mycousin Brian and I got together and I
wrote some songs that people still loveto hear to this day, which is
pretty awesome. What is after allthese years, if you could sit down
and maybe try to I mean,it's so hard to pinpoint where talent comes
(02:36):
from, right, It's so hardto pinpoint what makes a hit over another
or what resonates with people on sucha grand scale, like the Beach Boys.
But if you had to like sitback and think about it for a
little bit, like what do youthink the connecting dots are between the Beach
Boys some of those songs to thepublic that have been generational, Well,
I think the main thing from mypoint of view is the harmonies. The
(03:00):
harmonies when they're done with the perfectblend and stuff, they really resonate with
the not only the mind, butthe heart, you know, and the
emotions. And there was a therewas a psychologist in England just recently a
few months ago that came out withsome research where they researched all these songs
from a point of view, whichsongs make people feel the best and good
(03:23):
vibrations came in at number one.Yeah, yeah, And there were there's
a bo there was a Bob Marleyin there. There was a Pink in
there. There was a September byEarth. When In Fire was ten,
we were one and eight with IGet Around, which is pretty amazing,
you know so, But I thinkit's the harmonies that distinguished the Beach Boys
(03:46):
music from so many others. Imean, there's a lot of bands with
the great lead singer and stuff andgreat songs and all that. But when
you have those complex harmonies with whetherit's a bid or uptempo or a mid
temple or something, it really makesyou feel good to hear that sound.
(04:08):
You know, I can't remember,this is mortifying. I can't remember exactly
what you're But a few years back, maybe or so, you released a
collection of some songs that you didn'tThere were some originals, there were some
covers, but you did Here Comesthe Sun, and I have to say
I wanted to bring that up toyou. Yeah, right, See,
I wanted to bring that up toyou because it's like one of my ultimate
(04:30):
favorite songs and there's a connection withmy animals and my dog Samson, and
I just saw your version because it'syou know, when you take on another
I can't I kind of group suchas the Beatles. You know, you
being from the Beach Boys. It'shard to redo a song and give it
justice. But I wanted to saythank you because I thought you it was
lovely and wonderful. Thank you.I do a song on our show called
Piss's Brothers, which were reminiscent ofthe time I spent in India with the
(04:55):
Beatles. You know, George Harrison. I'm both at our birthdays in the
spring of nineteen six eight in India, right overlooking the Ganges River from a
place called Rishi Kish And it's abeautiful song. It's very heartfelt and yeah,
and Here Comes the Sun was justa great song, and it has
(05:16):
a unique arrangement. It's a littlebit different than his. It was a
beautiful song to do, and itfelt really good to be able to sing
that, you know, I mean, I would. I have to bring
this part up because I'm a hugeanimal advocate for the State of Connecticut,
and of course my tagline is peopleand Pets when we're kinder to animals or
kinder to people, And I knowthat you. Now, I don't know
(05:40):
if you're vegan, but I knowyou are a vegetarian, and I know
there's some meaning behind that. Areyou a huge pet lover dog, cats,
cows? What is it that youhave? Well, I travel so
much that I don't keep a pet, but my daughter has a beautiful little
Alaskan Cleek Eye, who is aminiature husky. And we've had semoids and
(06:02):
and all kinds of pets over theyears, but mainly with their kids growing
up and stuff. But you know, since I travel some muchs had them.
You know, I don't personally keeppet, but we've definitely had a
lot of them over the years. And yeah, so so yeah, I'm
(06:24):
all in favor of treating you know, animals nicely. They have a concept
in Ireveda called aims, which meansnon violence, if you don't have to
take good life of another being inorder to sustain yours. And that that's
a principle in Hinduism that I learnedsince going to visit with Marishi and it
(06:46):
was a completely vegetarian place and atthat academy or ashram there. So yeah,
you get exposed of these different concepts, you know, and some of
them, you know, resonate withyou now. You released a memoir years
ago, Good Vibrations My life asa beach boy. Are there things now
(07:09):
that you think about that you wishyou would have put in there? Or
have you made your piece? Andthere's no more memoirs coming from you.
No, I think there'll be moremore written stuff come out by me.
But you know, because a lotneeds to be done in this plant.
As you know. You know, there's so many problems everywhere, and a
(07:30):
lot of them could be resolved orat least lessons by the meditation and positive,
you know, creative ways out ofthings rather than hating each other and
pulling each other. That has beenthe history of mankind, which is unfortunate,
and that's got to stop. Iknow there's so much more that we
(07:51):
could even go into with that, but I don't even know if we have
time for that. But I doknow that you're going to be spreading positivity
on Wednesday, November fifty Toyota OakdaleTheater. I've got links up to everything
for even ticket upgrades if people areinterested in that. And we're going to
be hearing some incredible music, somesome new stuffs, some old stuff.
It's just going to be a wonderful, lovely evening. I don't know why
(08:13):
I keep saying the word lovely.But that's just I just can't wait,
and I know it's going to bewonderful. What can fans expect? What
can the diehards expect? I mean, is this They're going to get everything
they want more. Oh yeah,we're going to hear everything. You're going
to hear everything that you'd want tohear from these boys from the hit in
the top forty side, you know, all their hit records and stuff,
but also some really nice, lesserknown abouts and stuff. And so I
(08:41):
think everybody will kind of appreciate, you know, the variety and scope of
the music that we'll do. Butbasically you're going to I think everybody,
we and the audience are going tofeel great at the end of the night
after having you know, enjoyed thesesongs together. Now, I know we
(09:01):
don't have a whole lot of timeleft, but I do want to get
into some of the things that youlike to support, because again you're very
vocal about, you know, charitableorganizations giving back to those you've you know,
performed through over the years, especiallywith our military and our kids and
things like that. So what aresome of the things you'd like to share
with our audience today just to maybeinspire them to go out and do some
(09:22):
good in their community. Some projectsthat are important to you. Well,
George Bush some number forty one,George Herbert Walker Bush started thing called Points
of Light Foundation, and we werejust honored by the Points of Light Foundation
in Washington, d C. Abouta month ago. And what that foundation
(09:43):
does is it promotes service, whateverkind of service you could do, whatever
it could be to improve the livesof other people. That's the broad concept
of the Points of Light Foundation, and they do some great stuff. Always
been supportive of that since the beginning. We did a thing called Star Search
(10:05):
Students Taking Action and Responsibility and Serviceto promote the idea of community service with
kids from grade school up through highschool. And yeah, so that was
that's, you know, such agreat thing to promote. But they're there.
Any way you can improve the livesof others and contribute to to to
(10:30):
the positivity in life. I'm allin favor of that, and that's I
think that's a great thing when yourcelebrity or your efforts can go into improving
the quality of life for everyone. All right. And then finally, I
need to know of the songs thatyou play. And I mean, honestly,
(10:54):
if I don't even know how youpick your catalog, because you could
just you could go on for hoursand hours and hours and hours to play
everything that everybody wants to hear, right and trying to make everyone happy.
But what are some of the songsor some of the moments on stage that
you still get a kick out ofit? And that just takes you right
back to the beginning of why youare doing what you're doing, like when
you're when you're in the middle ofa riff, or you're in the middle
(11:16):
of a lyric or a moment whenyou connect with your audience. What are
some of the songs that personally youstill get a real kick out of when
you play well in a retro sense, I like to do serf and SFARI
and surf and USA, and youknow, I get around and fun fun,
fun are always great. Helped meround dos a big sing along,
(11:37):
so it is Barbara and but goodVibrations is probably one of the most unique
songs ever and it really is literallycreates good vibrations and really tons of positivity.
But Kokomo is one of the biggestsing alongs we do. In fact,
it was on the Full House andFull House reruns with the friend John
(12:01):
Stamos, and because of his loveof the Beach Boys, we were on
that show a few times and people, you know, of all ages sing
along with that song. So we'vejust got tons of songs that are really
great ballads like in My Room andWarmth of the Sun and Surf for Girl,
you know, and just so manyand it's just it's fantastic and a
(12:26):
blessing that we have so many greatsongs to perform. I do have to
ask. I mean we are knockingon the holidays doors, right, I
mean we're about a week out ofThanksgiving. We've got you know, Hanika
and Christmas, and you have littleSaint Nick. So will he possibly be
making appearance at any of your shows? You know, we could do a
(12:48):
little Saint Nick, but we don'twant to open your Christmas presents too early,
you know. Oh no, Ilisten, Mike, I'm just gonna
be upfront with you. I don'tcare about surprises. I want to know
my presence, but I still wantthem. I like to peek, I
like to sneak. I'm terrible. There's not a hiding place that I cannot
find so if you did, little, say nick, I would not be
disappointed. That'd be great. Keepit in mind, keep it in mind,
(13:11):
all right. It's been a realpleasure to speak with you. Mike
Love of the Beach Boys, Novemberfifteenth at the Toya Oakdale Theater. Thank
you for your time today, Thankyou for getting the word out and appreciate
it quite a bit. Thanks alot. Bye bye, okay, bye bye.
