(00:00):
Hi, Rick, How are you? I'm good, How are you doing
good? Oh my gosh. Ihave spoken to you so many times in
my career, and I feels likeevery year you've You've got fifty billion tour
dates, You're still supporting your incrediblealbum that we spoke about your ladies that
I'm automatic you're still doing the cruisetours. Every time you do these right

(00:21):
and meet new fans or old fansor people have been with you like,
does that is that what keeps yougoing? Is that do you need them
as much as they need you?Yeah? Absolutely. I used to think
it was all about me. Ithink you do when when you first have
success, But if you're in upfor a long enough, you realize it's
actually about the fans. And ifthey weren't there, you'd be you know,

(00:44):
planned to treat people at the holidayend. So you know, I'm
very, very fortunate to have peoplethat are still interested in what I'm doing
and what I've done, and Ifeel very I feel very honored, and
I'm greatful for it. I don'tI don't take that for granted ever.
And you know, it's fun whenwhen we see your show and the people

(01:08):
that sometimes you have with you atdifferent venues or you're the crews and the
fan fest that you you do.It feels like just so much like a
break from the headlines, a breakfrom the world. It's like it stops
time almost when you hear these songs, they're comfortable, they make you think
and reflect and we're happy. Andthen some of your later music, you're

(01:30):
newer music or covers, if youwill, we already accept them and love
them because it's it's it's from you. And is that how you go in
to anything new that you want totry and approach? Is it is it
that familiar feel that you you writewith, or what is your inspiration when
trying to conjure up anything new? It's trually, I don't know. I

(01:55):
don't think any writer really knows wherethe songs truly come from. They can
get ideas when you see as somethingin the headlines or something happens to you
personally, but the idea of thesong coming through to to detail that or
to put that in perspective, oryou know, like if it's a death

(02:15):
and a friend, you know,to to put that out there and try
and heal through that. I don'treally know where it comes from I know
that I want to share songs Iwrite. That's why I don't sit on
the shelf. You know, youwant to share your feelings or others and
and when I'm moved by someone's song, I want to I want to write
a song like that to move people. It's part of the drive of a

(02:38):
writer, I think, to connect. It's a way I connect with other
people. I'm not real social asa person, but on stage I am,
and through my music, I amRick Springfield dot Com is where you
can go get all the information allyour new music, and you're touring through
the appears to be through the endof February. I'm sure you'll add some

(02:59):
more stuff in there here and there, and then within that you're stopping at
different cities and you're going to takea little break to do your fan get
away, which is in the DominicanRepublic, so nice place to get away
with your fans in October. SoI'll have all the details up on that.
Let's talk about you and your life, and I always seem to talk

(03:21):
to you whenever I have a tonof events surrounding animals coming up. And
it's it's crazy because I know howmuch animals mean to you, and I
always like to talk to you aboutyour inspiration, your pups. They mean,
oh my gosh, so I havea new dog now he's going to
turn one this coming Sunday, Wolfgang. But tell me about your life and
pets and how they've added to yourmusic. They well, they've certainly saved

(03:46):
my life for sure. To callthem Fry project. I just can meet
him, you know, anywhere Imeet him raises my spirits. We see
him in the airport and we're anhotel the other day that had a hotel
dog and it's uh, it's theyjust slowly brought blood pressure and major major

(04:10):
part for me, you know,to keep kind of keep saying I've always
had a dog always well, andyou know, I do think some things
to help animals and kids. Ithink the two that I put my most
energy towards. Well, I mean, you really can't. You can't go

(04:31):
wrong in those two arenas, right, because if someone has a problem with
that, then that's a whole othersituation with that person, right, Because
I do. I do a programcalled Amazing Canine Duos and Lost in Pound,
and I always close with people andpets when we're kinder to animals,
we're kinder to people. And Ibelieve that, and I believe that's why
I've always been such a fan ofyours, because you know, from from

(04:54):
the yet go, from following you, you know, yes, doctor Noah
Drake. Yes, I was therewith that, and then following you through
your TV and your film and youranimal advocacy and your music, and it's
just, you know, it's justfun. And having been around all that
rick and and writing through all ofthat, you know, you're you're watching

(05:14):
musicians, you're watching friends, You'rewe're all getting a little older. Does
that give you different purpose when yougo out on the road now? Do
you have a more grateful I knowyou touched on that moments ago about being
for the fans, but personally,do you have more of an appreciation for
yourself and your music when you're outon the road Now? I think I'm

(05:35):
a little easier on myself. Yeah. I used to be very used to
be very harsh on myself when Iwas younger, and my worst critic and
all that that's seized up a littleand I've gotten older, and I guess
I'm more sure of myself and youknow, confident and myself as a writer

(05:57):
and all that kind of thing. And I don't know if we've comes with
age, but I think certainly there'sa certain confidence that does come with it
for sure. And you know you'vebeen doing it for a long time.
But I don't have some chops orhave it down but now or you know
that I'm a better freaking to stopright, all right? So do you
always have a guitar handy? Likewhenever you're so you're just like, okay,

(06:20):
everyone's like, oh, we're gonnasit, We're gonna watch a movie
and it's quiet and there's a scarypartument on and all of a sudden here
comes wricking a guitar. Like areyou that person on the couch with a
guitar all the time? Or doyou do you put it down and take
breaks from it? Oh? No, I put yeah, I put it.
I put it down. I onlypick it up to write, really,
And it's usually you know, outsideare there are places I go to

(06:44):
write, but I'm watching something unlessunless some idea comes from what I'm watching,
which has happened for sure, I'llgrab I'll grab a guitar, but
no, I can separate it.I can separate them and if you,
well, I guess, I guessyou do have to. But at this
point in your career when you're gettingready to go on, so what are
some of the different ways that youprepare now to to keep yourself healthy and

(07:08):
things that you bring with you andthings that you do to mentally get ready
for another another trunk? Because you'vealways, to me seemed like you've always
been pretty good shape. So howdo you prepare again? Working out?
I work out. I take inall certain foods on the road that they
don't have readily available. I'm prettypretty strict on what I eat. I

(07:30):
have been for a long time. But you know, it's really it's just
a mental kind of preparation. Wouldn'tanything being away from home for a while,
this tour, this we've been outfor a couple of weeks, and
that's a longest I've been away fromhome, I think since the eighties.
We're nice to go out for like, you know, two months at a

(07:51):
time. Wow. And uh.And it's it's as you know, as
you do get all the home becomesmore important than a bigger part of your
of your world, until it makesit harder to leave. You know when
you realize there's only a certain numberof breaths to got left. Well,
geez on that note, let's getready to wrap Rick Springfield dot com.

(08:15):
I'm gonna have all the links upthere, and you're going to see him
on tour through February. Well,we'll have we follow you. It's play
your music, Rick, I talkabout you. I appreciate everything you do.
You know if you can leave ourfans. I always like to ask
you this question when we're rapping orin clothes, and I've asked you this
so many different times, and You'vealways come up with a different answer.
So let's see if we can't keepour streak going. But maybe maybe there's

(08:39):
a story behind one of your songs. It doesn't matter because I've always asked
you about Jesse. We know allthose stories, but like, is there
some fun stories between a recent songthat you've written that happened by accident or
is there one you know now thatI'm talking right now, a story that
you can recall, a fun memorybehind a song that you've written, so
then when we listen to it wehave more of appreciation for it. Well,

(09:01):
actually, the song one of theones we do live the new songs
is called Automatic. It's a titletrack from the album. And I woke
up at three in the morning witha song playing in my head. And
usually when that happens, you know, you go, oh wow, great
song, and you get up andget ready to write it down and then
realize it's a Beatles song. ItsLady's a brickl starter, subconscious plagiarism.

(09:24):
So but this was an original song, and I got up and turned on
tape recorder and played it, andwhen I woke up the next day it
was I liked it, and soI was this when you know, when
you get things in a dream,it's it's pretty magical. So that's really
where the song came from. AndI don't fully know what it means a

(09:48):
song. I'm trying to work itout. Well, thanks to you,
haven't broken. We We're good.We are we are winning this question.
So until our next conversation, Iwish you know thing about fun, success,
puppy kisses, and and maybe we'llsee you pop up in a movie
or or film or TV soon.Any any nuggets there. I know there's
the strike going on now, butdo you have any plans to do anything

(10:11):
like that? Yeah, absolutely, there's there's things in the area, you
know, but it's nothing solid justyet. But as an actor, you
you've got to have other pursuits andI certainly have that on the road and
in the studios. So until somethingcomes up, I'm busy. All right.
Well, I hope you'll come backand visit me again. It's always

(10:31):
a pleasure. Have a great tour. Thanks, so I appreciate it.
Bye bye.
