Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning, Thank you for listening to Community Access. My
guest this morning is doctor John Maduko, president of Connecticut
State Community College, also known as CT State.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Good morning, Hey, good morning, happy to be here.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
So you assumed office in June of twenty twenty two,
following a nationwide search, and you were unanimously voted in.
How does that feel?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
It feels good? I mean, it feels like that was
thirty years ago. But when I have time to look back,
I very appreciative, a very humbling experience to be given
the privilege to serve this great state, more importantly, serve
our phenomenal students, faculty, and staff. Hopefully I was able
to kind of convey the why behind pursuing this role
and and my intentions not for myself but really for

(00:43):
the betterment of our communities and for all people seeking
to better themselves and advance their careers and education.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
So how do you like it so far?

Speaker 2 (00:51):
It's been great, Right, It's been a lot of hard work,
primarily on the backs of our great faculty and staff
and our administrators. It's been good. I mean, we merged
something that took about six to seven years, and you know,
we came out on the other end surviving that and
I think returning the corner in terms of our enrollment,

(01:12):
but more importantly as this force as the largest community college.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
In New England, now spring registration is upon us. This
is and people should be signing up for classes now
to get the best selection of courses. Absolutely, and what
is that date? January twenty fourth.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Janey twenty fourth is when classes start for the spring semester.
But there's still plenty of time for anyone interested in
starting college continuing their education and reach out to our
institution and our advisors to help sign them up for
courses and get their financial aid and other things situated.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
So students can attend part time, full time, day night online.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
Yes, yes, so the flexibility is there because one seventy
percent of our students are employed. They're working, right. We
know that it's expensive live here in Connecticut, so we
are mindful of our accessibility and our availability. So haven't
given people as many options as possible. I think speaks
to just where we are as a state in a society.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
And people can be eligible for free tuition, yes, who would.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Be so one? You have to be a Connecticut resident
to a high school graduate. Have it be a high
school of Connecticut anywhere, and ultimately someone with a previous
college experience as far back as twenty twenty, So that's
really it. And then you can and then ultimately apply

(02:36):
for financial aid to kind of determine your eligibility. But
really there is no income criteria that has to be met,
so it's really available for the people of Connecticut.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
That's wonderful. So it's not income based, then, no, it's not.
So why should all students complete the FAFSA form?

Speaker 2 (02:55):
Yeah, I mean for starters to assess if you're eligible
for financial aid from the federal government. Right. It really
kind of establishes a financial aid foundation for a student,
and then from there it forced them a litany of
options and funds that are potentially available to students, not

(03:18):
just from the federal government obviously our free tuition program,
but there's scholarship information and there's other grants that really
continue to drive down the cost of education.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
What a blessing if people can do this, because they
could save a ton of money and go get their
bachelor's degree afterwards.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Absolutely, I mean, it's a debt free tuition program, right,
because we recognize that at least my generation our generation
and beyond, the idea of college debt is just a
black cloud and if and also kind of dissuades people
from pursuing higher education. So knowing that we are the
most affordable institution of higher education and stay of Connecticut

(03:56):
and really outside of Maine, you won't find another institution
shod more affordable than us. Wow, you know, we make
going to college a reality?

Speaker 1 (04:04):
And why should someone choose this route?

Speaker 2 (04:07):
Yeah? You know, community colleges, You know, I believe that
we're to people's college. You know, I think universities and
they're phenomenal universities in the state and beyond. But universities
in many cases filter people out, and we filter people in.
You know, the mission of a community college is to
say yes and to never turn people away. I think too,
our mission is broad in terms of people seeking to

(04:30):
be upskilled, people seeking a new career, people seeking the
transfer to a four year institution like our regional state
institutions East, Eastern, Central, Western, and Southern, connect Connected State
University and Charter Roke State College and Yukon and beyond.
But ultimately, it's it's options, the paces, it's favorable, it's

(04:51):
it's small classroom settings are Our staff and our faculty
are are appealing in terms of, you know, they put
the students first. And I feel that, you know, at
university is a destination. I feel that we are in
your backyard because communities in our in our middle name.
You know, we have nearly thirty locations across the state.

(05:13):
So again access to you know, accessibility and also affordability
is something I think people are seeking now more than ever.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
My daughter was at Western for two years and she's
going to NBCC in the fall for the nursing program.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
And again shout out to our nursing faculty at our
Narcotech Valley campus. But we have six phenomenal registered nursing
programs across the state of Connecticut. Our Board of Regions
just approved Connecticut's first public license practical nursing program, so,
I know, long term healthcare facilities, but also just people

(05:48):
trying to get into nursing. That's a phenomenal pathway to
do that. And again, our staff are, our nursing faculty,
our genet faculty are phenomenal, are phenomenal in terms of,
you know, our goal is to get our students to
whatever desired destinations they have for themselves.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
If a student is commuting every day, they have a
four hour gap, but they don't want to go back home,
what can they do on campus to pass the time?

Speaker 2 (06:11):
Yeah, so a couple of things. One, we offer a
U Pass and the U Pass is free public transportation
to all of our credit based students. Right, So, free
public transportation for that accessibility. I think too while on
any of our campuses, you know, we have student life,
We have student life and activities, we have student clubs.
But also too, you know, we have phenomenal mental health

(06:32):
counselors because we know mental health continues to be a
significant phenomenon in our country and in communities. So our
counselors do phenomenal work. We have career services, we have
wrap around services, and we just have great people on
our campuses that engage with our students because our students
are not numbers to us, their people, right and again,

(06:53):
we see their potential because our students have been worthy
since day one. Our goals to get them, our goals
of partner with their students and get them to their
ultimate destination. So it's phenomenal experiences, a sense of belonging
in our campuses or campuses are diverse, but also too
our students can go to any campus. So often a
students can choose one campus, but maybe their job is

(07:16):
closer to another campus, so they can simply take classes
over there. So again that flexibility, I believe is everything
for our students.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
And then you have the transfer pathway agreements with the
state universities as well.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
Yes, absolutely, and our state universities are phenomenal. You know,
they have reputable programs in nursing and and steming and
engineering and the arts. And you know, our Board of Regions,
our system, and our sister university have done phenomenal world
creating those pathways for students who start at CT State
and ultimately finish their education at those great state universities.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
And they can transfer their credits.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
Yeah. Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (07:55):
Let's go back to the services. We mentioned mental health
services and you said that they're worthy. Why do they
need to know their worth?

Speaker 2 (08:03):
I think often if you turn on turn on the
news or reading newspaper, you go on social media, a
lot of negativity, a lot of just tension, and often
I think that creates doubt that person might have in themselves.
You know, the one thing about CT State Community College,
it's not about college readiness, which is important. It's about

(08:23):
the institution, our institution being student ready and meeting our
students where they are right and reminding their reminding our
students every step of the way they are worthy. We're
we're not asking our students to prove themselves and we're
not here to fix our students. Our students are unbroken
and our students are intelligent. It's just helping our students
to connect those dots to get them to the next level,

(08:45):
to complete what they started, right. I think it's building
that confidence and that takes investing in an individual, not
just from an instructional standpoint, but just in a wellness
standpoint and say you will, you will complete this degree,
this program and get to the next stage.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
You have a veterans center, yes we do.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
So we have oasis veterans oasis centers on our twelve
main campuses. You know, so shout out, you know to
our student veterans who do phenomenal work. Obviously, the ultimate
sacrifice someone can have is serv serving our country, which
they do, and we recognize that. The Veterans Oasis it's
a special place just for our veterans, right, not only

(09:27):
bringing the services to them but just kind of getting away,
getting away from you know, what can be a noisy
environment sometimes on a typical college campus.

Speaker 1 (09:36):
And if someone eats, childcare that's available.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Yes, so seven out of our twelve campuses have childcare centers,
and the childcare rates are very affordable, right, because again
I want to say at least twenty percent of our
students our parents right going to college, going to work,
and obviously you know, tending to their family. So again,
just another very impactful resource that we're proud to offer

(10:00):
on our campuses.

Speaker 1 (10:01):
Yeah, that's huge to know that I can bring my
child there while I'm going to class. That's amazing. You
can absolutely do that. And tutoring, there's free tutoring.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
Free tutoring, right, you know, our tutors do God's works
as it relates to being that bridge, the supplement the
phenomenal instruction our students are receiving in the classroom. But
often all students at all levels need extra help, you know. I,
you know, I, you know, finally committed tutoring later in college.
I remember telling myself what was I doing? Right, Like,

(10:33):
I can just come here and you can help me
with my paper. You can help me with this project
and can help me better understand what the professor is
trying to instilling me. So archwers do great work and
it adds to the wrap around services environment that we
create at CT State Community College.

Speaker 1 (10:48):
Let's talk about the short term licensure and certificate training
programs that are offered.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
Yeah, so you know, like I mentioned flexibility and options.
So in addition to our conventional credit based program that
lead to a degree, we also have short term credentials.
Sometimes an individual is currently employed but they're underskilled, right,
so they can take six week course to secure an

(11:14):
additional skill let's say in manufacturing, let's say in healthcare,
like an EKG certificate or a CNA certificate, and then
go back to their current employer to be more marketable. Right.
So we have flexibility, they're short term, they are offered
in a way that does not take away from someone's
ability they have to work. They can fit it into

(11:34):
their schedule, and we work with all five of our
Workforce Investment boards who are who are leading the charge
as pertained to that workforce development training that we're seeing
a greater need in Connecticut today in terms of just
more jobs and people seeking jobs. Right. So again, another
option for individuals trying to better themselves.

Speaker 1 (11:55):
What would you say to someone maybe who's not your
normal college aged person who's afraid to go back to college.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
Yeah, I would say it's okay to be afraid. One
that tells me they care, right, So I don't think
fear is a bad thing. I think two to three
three percent of all of our students are adult learners, right,
that's a significant them. Remember, we serve nearly seventy thousand
students a year, so we have a lot of adult
learners who again, either their jobs have become obsolete, right,

(12:24):
they have been laid off, they just want to do more.
Their kids are older and they feel like, hey, now
I have the time to go back to college and
pursue a goal that I was unable to do when
my kids were younger. And again, we welcome older students
from non traditional students with open arms, right, because we
have something for them. And also too, you know, our

(12:45):
advisors are faculty identify with adult learners because so many
of our faculties, so many of our staff go back
to school to earn additional credentials. Right, So it's never
it's never too late. And again we don't filter out,
we filter in right. We don't turn people up way.
We are fueled by the needs and the goals and
aspirations of our students.

Speaker 1 (13:04):
And education is something that no one can ever take
away from you.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
It's lifelong. And I really feel that the pursuit of
education is really aligned with liberty. Right. Being able to
own something that no government or no person can take
away from you, which is your knowledge is life changing, right,
and we are we are humble that we get to
do this day in and day out for the great
people of Connecticut.

Speaker 1 (13:26):
So you have extended registration hours on all of your campuses.
This is Saturday, January eleventh, from nine to one. So
you're going on break pretty soon, yes, we are. But
then everybody's coming back absolutely yep, because there a website
that they can go to.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
Yeah, so ctstate dot edu for general information, ct State
dot edu, Ford Forward slash apply and also ct State
dot edu Ford Flash Free Tuition. Right. So those are
just great starting points to connect with our professionals and
our leaders to help I individuals who are interested. It's

(14:03):
not only the right programmatic selection, but ensuring that they
have access to all of the financial and support information
that make going to college duel. We enroll a year round.
We're not going anywhere. We have locations literally in every
corner of Connecticut, and we are here to serve well.

Speaker 1 (14:20):
I'm so grateful that my daughter can go to a
community college and it's just going to last her the
rest of our life.

Speaker 2 (14:26):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (14:27):
Yes, I'm speaking with doctor John Maduko, president of Connecticut
State Community College also known as CT State. Thank you
so much for serving the community and caring so much
about the people here.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
Happy holidays to know our listeners here. I'm very happy
to be here. But to our faculty or staff and students,
I am proud to serve them and our administration's problem
serve them. But also to the people of Connecticut. You know,
we are your community college, right and our mission and
our values is wrapped around the success of our communities
and it's people. So again, yeah, thank you so much,

(15:02):
thank you for having me
