For those who don't know about Capital for Change, how
did it begin and what is it all about?

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Well, I'll explain first what it is. Capital for Change
is a community loan fund. It's a community development financial institution.
You may hear a lot in the news with Washington
what's CDFIs. We are a loan funds set up in
nineteen ninety four is when they first began to offer

(00:50):
financing capital to populations that typically aren't well served by
the regular banking system, the underserved population. We provide financing
for affordable housing, the energy efficiency upgrades, small business loans,
nonprofit loans, loan servicing, and counseling as well.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
That's wonderful. Do you have any personal stories of people
that you know without naming names, of how it's impacted
their lives.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Oh many ways. The affordable housing is certainly our biggest.
The emphasis is on that most of our work, and
we've seen neighborhoods transformed, and it not only touches on housing,
but that expands into other areas because a stable housing
environment is better for education, better for health, better for safety.

(01:48):
All of those things stem off a stable housing environment.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
And people can go to your website, Capitalforchange dot org
to find out about all of the programs and services.

It's been a marvelous experience and that's half the battle,
and half the joy is the people I get to meet.
We have just under fifty employees and all of them
are happy to be there and do an excellent job
and feel good in the morning when they wake up,
and look forward to doing it all over again because.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
You're helping so many people thousands.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Now, I will say that Connecticut is about ninety two
thousand units shy of where they should be of affordable housing.
We're making a dent, but it's a long process and
we need help.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
So tell me you have an important event that's coming up.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Well, there's an event for those who really don't know
what a CDFI is, how important it is, the impact,
and how they can be involved Tuesday morning and at
the Lyceum in Hartford. There'll be a couple of experts
who can speak to CDFI's financing, all types of things

(03:40):
that are directly related to these issues. And if anyone
would want information, I will give my email address. That's
the best way again, t Grady at Capital for Change
