I'm over at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell. It's Birdies
for Charity, this amazing program that we're going to tell
you about. My guest this morning is Betsy Walsh. She
is director of Development at Malta House of Good morning,
Good morning Alison, thank you for being here.

Thank you for having me.

For people who don't know about Malta House of carey
tell us off how it began and what it's all about.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Well, Malta House here began nineteen years ago and we
provide free primary healthcare to uninsured adults in Greater Harvard.
We have a mobile medical van that goes out into
the neighborhoods and we also have a fixed location right
between Asylum and Farmington Avenue on the campus of Saint
Joseph Cathedral for people bet need care and it's fully

primary care. Have to be eighteen or older, uninsured, and
provide a photo ida and that's the only criteria.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
How wonderful is that? How are you able to provide
these services?

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Well, it's all philanthropy, believe it or not. And thank
you to you Travelers Webster Bank for this wonderful opportunity.
Since twenty eighteen, we've raised over a half a million
dollars through dirties for charity alone. We also have many
wonderful individual donors, corporations of the foundations that provide support

our organization. We have a small political staff, a couple
of administrative people, and the rest is about fifty medical
volunteers doctors, nurses, APR, nspas that come in and give
their time in the clinic and we take care of
our patients.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
How wonderful is that? How great is the need of
the uninsured in Connecticut?

Speaker 2 (01:40):
It's great and likely to grow soon. Right now, there's
uninsured break great up Perford is about ten percent. It's
fifteen percent in Eastchildford, which is where we're over here
in the locations and we help about fourteen hundred patients
a year individuals a year. Most of them have a

chronic illness. About ninety percent of our patient population has
either diabetes or asthma or have blood pressure something that
needs to be monitored to checked. Our staff and our
volunteers look at them to get them to take care
of themselves, make lifestyle changes. Hopefully because about medication, but
medication once we get the back, we also pay for
all the lad work and radiology that.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
Wow, it must be like Christmas morning for them. The
anticipation of knowing that you're coming, they're going to get
checked out.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
You know, it's like Christmas Day for them.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
It's their gift.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
It really is wonderful. And our patients are just they're
very grateful, they're gracious, they're lovely. A lot of them
are huggers, so we have hugs. So it is it's
wonderful to we have to do that for people.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
So the impact has been amazing. Then people are grateful
it's making them feel better emotionally physically.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
We have of approximately eighty five thousand patient business since
we open it two thousand and six.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
Wow. And as you said, this is all done through donations. Yes,
so the British for Charity program. For every dollar raise,
you'll get fifteen cents from Webster Bank. If people go

You and we'd appreciate that and our patients would really
appreciate that.

If anyone would like to volunteer here.

Oh my goodness, yes, I'm sorry, thank you for Oh yes,
any medical volunteers. If you build our website, there's a
button if you want to give help. Pick that button
and you can fill out a horn and we will
be happy to have any medical volunteer come and help
us out. And some show up once a week or
every other week. They have a regular schedule, you know,
for a morning or an afternoon, and it's it's great.

They love it, they love to come in. It's the
highlight of.
