Dodgeball turns 22, so Covino and Rich make the case that gym class was the best part of the school day. They run through the parachute, the rope climb, the Presidential Fitness Test, the funky gym clothes everyone forgot in their locker, and the gym sports that turned into all-out wars. Then it is on to the Knicks championship parade and the age-old question of whether parades are actually cool or only fun when it is your team, with the best moments from a wild day in New York. Finally, the guys lay out the Grandma Rule, their official theory on which World Cup team you are allowed to root for, plus a soccer jersey sizing PSA you will thank them for.

Overpromised is the weekly bonus pod from Covino and Rich. Catch them live on Fox Sports Radio weekdays 5-7 PM ET / 2-4 PM PT. Search Covino and Rich wherever you get your podcasts.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Yeah, we're gonna do it. Yeah, buddy, the bonus probably
gotta do it because rich Over promises all these things
we never got to on our normal show. Cavino on
rich on Fox Sports Radio, Monday through Friday, two to
four on the West, five to seven on the East.
So welcome, you know what, what tell me about it?
Stud If you can dodge rench, you could dodge a ball. Oh.

(00:31):
On this day, a very special movie came out. We're
gonna reminisce plus parades, parades. I love a parade, and
of course the Grandma rule. We established a Grandma rule
talking a little World Cup actually own here on. Over
promised one forty four Coveno and rich and let's get
into it. Two thousand and four Classic came out. Well,

(00:52):
it was like the last of the quotable movies that era.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
I would say, there's an era in the mid two
thousand's what the wedding singers up? Sorry, the wedding crashers,
the super beds, the dodgeballs, the old schools, they were
all mid two thousands before social media, we still quoted movies.
And today the anniversary of when you and I used
to remember we used to work out together, at Globo Gym.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
Yeah, man, Vince Vaughn was slim and trim average. Joe's
I'm Team Globo, jim My Boy, Chris Williams in there,
he's in the headband Hall of Fame. It was a classic,
still is a classic, in fact, all these years later,
twenty two years later.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
So don Ball, that's one of those holy shit we're
getting all the time two years ago.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
Can you believe that? It makes me think of, well,
all the famous quotes because it was very quotable. We
lived it. The number one quote probably if you could
dodger rench, you get dodge Ball and patches a hold
of hand. What else do you think of? Joni loves Chachi? Definitely?
I could just picture Stiller's stupid face for that. Joni
loves Chachi. By the way, that was pre championship Ben Stiller, right,

(01:55):
that was before he was a champion. Yes, how about
that before before the Knicks one, before he was That
was the old school Stiller. How about Nobody makes me
bleed my own blood. That's another good one. Right. It
can go on all day with bats and great moments. Cotton, Yes,
some good ones, but it also kind of thinking because
it's dodgeball. How fun dodgeball was when we throw it

(02:19):
back and think of our high school even grade school days,
because you really start to separate yourself as like I'm
the guy, I'm the leader of this gym class.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
One of my favorite clips of all time is that
sassy dude who throws a ball like behind his head
and hits a girl in the face.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Just this viral dodgeball clubs slow motion moments. Let me
tell you this.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
What bothers me more than anything is when people insist
that kids don't play dodgeball anymore.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
They do. I've seen it at even birthday parties. I've
seen like kids have like a sports party, they break
out the dodgeballs. Kids are getting hit in the head.
Reference back man, you know, like thanks to Winn Benyama,
I guess or Bill Madison when he came back to
school and he started destroying all those little kids. That's
the fun part of the Who was dodgeball is class

(03:08):
Conte was not my first memory though, My first, like
gym class memory was the parachute. So look put it
this way, dodgeball got us thinking about gym class memories
when you were the gym class hero. Steve Cavino here,
I was all state. Well, first I was All Area,
then All County, all state gym class before we get
into your gym class hero memories, Yeah, Dodgeball, did you

(03:31):
have a strategy because I felt like not that you
would hang back, but I feel like I was had
pretty good hands, So I'll come out throwing to me,
I'll catch it, because I think the kid that was
too aggressive was the kid that was out first. You
got us like chill, like blend in, and then at
the end, I'm coold taking on multiple people. Let's go.
I played like Sandler, like I was Sandler against the
other kids. Oh yeah, I was dominant. Yeah, I led

(03:52):
with elbows and now yeah, Wemby, I brought aggression to
my game at an early age. Dodgeball, you're on your
guy's own team. I was a champion, dude, it's like
your own ta h Yeah, I was the guy. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Well, I bet you there was something you weren't good
at because unless you were the skinny, little rumty kid or.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
Some of the girls too well, you let me. You
skipped over. My first memory of gym class the parachute.
Do you guys remember the parachute? Like, oh, like this
the parachute and then you go inside the parachute. We
never did that. We never did that in my school.
I know everyone and all the kids across the class.
And then you throw balls on top of the parachute,
inside the parachute, and then you evolved into like you know,

(04:30):
grade school little basketball, and then of course dodgeball. But
you're right, I know where you're going. I don't remember
the parachute that much. Wasn't my wasn't my shit. We
had like an old like nineteen sixties, just white like
some army guys. Was just like your details blanket that
you throw It was your grandma's jonies what it was.

(04:50):
But the thing I said, only the little rumty kids
could do. It was their one skill, the rope climb.
Little kids could do pull ups too. When you when
you remember the rope climb, I always look back and
I think sort of dangerous. No, see me feel funny
like climbing the rope and gym class. You tell me,
if one of those kids doesn't fall from up top,

(05:11):
he could really hurt himself. You think that one little
mat was gonna do anything? Absolutely? Are you a shosratic?
We did that. We don't do it. That's why I
don't think kids do that anymore. But I was definitely like, again,
like when I said about dodge boy, you start separating
yourself seeing where you stand. I was like, you know,
not in the middle. I was like right above the middle.
I hit the tippity top of the ceiling. We have ceilings. Yeah,

(05:33):
a few times. Yeah, yeah, I really had to push myself.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
You know.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
I feel like I was embarrassing, like five feet off
the ground and I'm like, I'm done here. I got that.
I was probably so not high on the rope. Yeah,
it was like it wasn't like part of your like tumbling,
like then you do like tumbling and stuff like that
was no.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
At my elementary school, Washington Street School and Franklin Square,
we did. I think it was like like gymnastics week
when we did an obstacle course. There was like the
horse and you climbed over something. Yeah, it was like
gymnastics week.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
So gym class memories, parachute, the rope climb. How about
this is a random one. Okay, how about the rank
ass gym clothes that people just kept in their locker.
You were all crunchy and sweaty, and disgusting and smell
like purs disgusting ranks close like like the corn chips,

(06:22):
like Fredo's in his locker room and it's that dude's
gym close.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
The crazy thing is when you were in junior high
or high school, you were going through puberty. Some kids
weren't even rocking the odorant in they should have. And
know what you would do. You would play at gym
class for forty five minutes sweating these clothes.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
Then you'd put him in like a shop right bag,
put him back in your locker and they sat there.
Two days later you break them out again and they're
all even worse though. You'd sweat your ass all into
these rank gass gym clothes, and then you'd sit in
history class social studies right after it with a sweaty ass.
So if you went all out in Jim class, because
Jim class was fun, it was fun for some people
if you were if you were a for others, you're

(07:04):
a guy that loved sports, you're right you would show up.
You go to the fucking biology class with the sweaty ass,
and like you sure would have pit stains. So yeah,
really great to be sweating in the next class.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
But it all goes back to elementary school for me,
where I think when we separate into teams for certain sports. Yeah,
they'd say, go in the closet, and in the closet
of the gym class of the gym, of the gymnasi.
In that closet is where they kept those big bins
of different balls. And then behind that, behind that there
was a little chest and it had pennies that had

(07:36):
to be from like the sixties or seventies.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
Penny smelt like the funk of forty thousand years. Oh,
the most rankest rank, like they never watched them. Damn,
I want this penny, Give me another one. Yeah, those
pennies were definitely from the early sixties. How about this
when you're thinking of gym class memories. The fitness testing,
some people call it presidential fitness testing, but the fitness
testing Ronald D. Reagan gave me personal props. You would

(07:59):
you know your reach, your pull ups, your push ups,
you do some sprints, whatever. And my favorite part is
I still hold a record Union High School till this day.
I did sixty three sit ups in a minute and
seventy two farts I think, so I still hold the record.
My friend Gus was holding my feet and every time

(08:20):
and did you be cracking up? Dude? So I still
hold that record, I think. But yeah, the is your
name able to plaquet in union in Union high school? Yeah?
But like I said, it could be great for some people,
because believe it or not, I did hold a few records.
But for other people, it was like a nightmare because
it's embarrassing, right, because you couldn't do one pull up

(08:40):
and the whole class is watching you. All right. The
girls would hang there, Remember the girls would hang there.
I got one, Yeah, I got one. This is a
nightmare for some running the mile.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
Everyone had to do it. There was one kid in
your class who was.

Speaker 1 (08:54):
Like track star.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
Do you remember the one kid that was like I'm
gonna do a four minute mile? Yeah, and then no offense.
There was the big kid that walked it. No, there
would be the lazies what would you call them? The
future smokies, what would you call them? They would be
like all in the back, they wouldn't have close and
they'd be in their burnout uniforms just gonna walk. And
they were like walking the mile because they forgot their
gym clothes.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
Am I correct in saying that you had to do
it in under fifteen minutes or you quote failed it.
Remember the lazies.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
I remember the lazy walkers turned their last lap because
remember four laps was a mile. Turn their last lap.
I remember the gym teacher being like, you better movement, movement, movement,
or else you're gonna have to do it again, like
you had to do it in under fifteen minutes.

Speaker 1 (09:33):
In my school at least, oh man, there's always that
group of kids though, right there was always a group
of kids in the back with ladysackgress. They were you know,
like golf kids or something like oh out wand town.
But yeah, you try to get that six seven minute
mile in there. If you were decent, you know, nine
eight nine minutes was was a good goal. Six six

(09:54):
by seven mile was like that was that was your
good athlete. But again there was always that one kid
that was like, all right there, four minute mile. Yeah,
when the gym teacher are running the mile today, not
a fan, So yeah, running the mile in gym class.
And it also makes me think when you think of Dodgeball,
which came out on this day in two thousand and four,

(10:14):
this week, two years ago other sports that were fun
to play in gym class. Like growing up, I'm from
a town where it was like the you know, basketball, football,
baseball town, mostly football. So we played lacrosse in gym
class like plastic equipment and had so much fun with it.
Like we didn't have a lacrosse team we played in
gym class.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
We had a volleyball we we were a big lacrosse
high school, so we never did it in gym class.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
But what we did in high school gym class volleyball.
Volleyball is so awesome and competitive. You're not a volleyball team,
but I feel like it was like the tall foreign
kids that were on the team, Like I know one
I knew played high school volleyball, yet when it was
that time in gym class, we all loved it. Truthfully,
I don't know if we had a volleyball team, I
just know that we took it. So I'm serious in

(11:00):
gym class and again this is where you did like
you were the leader of the team or you were
just you just sucked you figured things out. Volleyball and
gym class was a lot of fun. And then my
favorite sport back in the day, Yeah, I got you
gotta put yourself in that high school mindset as gazing askazing.
Part of the fun of gym class was all the
hot chicks in the little otld Jim outfit.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
The Little Jim out My gym class te trip claimed
that he invented something called speedball, and what it is
is it's.

Speaker 1 (11:29):
Really Olympic handball. You ever played this way?

Speaker 2 (11:31):
You're allowed to dribble three times and you shoot into
a goal with your hands. It's like soccer, but you
use your hands.

Speaker 1 (11:37):
I don't think so, dude.

Speaker 2 (11:38):
It was the most fun we ever had. This is
like where the ultimate competition came out in my buddies. Yeah,
and you would make your teams. We had speedball tournaments,
so a team handball is like the Olympic term for it.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
But you would have gym class games were fun, but
dodgeball right up there at the top. Ye And of
course volleyball was always great if you were a competitive kid,
like I said, it was either a lot of fun
breaking the day or a nightmare. Because even even basketball
in gym class was like very competitive sometimes if you
had some good kids. Oh basketball, basketball and Jim Cluss

(12:09):
was great because again you weren't competing against the kids
that were on the high school team. They were like scrubs.
Good fun. Yeah that was fun. So gym class dodgeball.
Maybe you throw it in your DVD player over the weekend.
Maybe you watch it. You still have a timesake? No,
hell no, but in the closet somewhere nowhere do I
have a DVD.

Speaker 3 (12:29):
No.

Speaker 1 (12:29):
I have a VHS player though, in a closet. Oh,
let's see. Yeah all right now, because I got I
have an old computer. I still plays DVDs if I
needed to. You like a computer on old laptop that
has that has real well, I mean I don't use it,
but I have it. Yeah. So that got us thinking. Guys,
got a guys, got a gateway? What were your favorite

(12:51):
gym class memories? Hit us up at Covino and Rich.
It's a del bro at Coveno and Rich. You love
a del at Fox Sports Radio and thank you guys again. Now,
today's a special day. It's a big weekend of World
Cup Action USA place tomorrow. We'll talk about it Friday,

(13:11):
but today is the parade. We're doing this on a Thursday,
and it's the Knicks Parade and New York's all fired
up about it, and it's brought people together in so
many ways, brought New York together. It's been a lot
of fun to see Rich and I said, we're both
experiencing a little fomo kind of wish we were there,
being from the East coast.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
The East Coast friend, I have any call meeting, recording
anything I had to do today. I've been blown off,
no joke five times today. Yeah, could do it tomorrow
or next week. We got a parade going on, and
they've been.

Speaker 1 (13:38):
Waiting over fifty years.

Speaker 2 (13:39):
And you and I always say that parades are sort
of lame, unless, of course it's for your team. And
then as you get older, like all right, the Disney Parade,
it's pretty cool at Disney World.

Speaker 1 (13:48):
When you have kids, and when you grow a heart, yeah,
you start to appreciate again the same Patty's Day pay
it's fun too. What a weekend they pray? It's fectially.
You want to know where it changed my mind? Nineteen
ninety six, you know, as a as a kid growing
up on the East Coast, like praids are for dorks
who goes to parades. I'd watch them on TV and
Thanksgiving the paraides and I'm like who goes out there
a bunch of the I think Paris, which I think

(14:10):
Thanksgiving is the one that gives it a bad rep.
But when I went to the nineteen ninety six World
Series Prayer, when Yankees finally won, man, it changed my
whole perception the Canyon of Heroes to tick or tape
the mayhem. You're buying t shirts, you're having fun, you're
celebrating as one and it is such a great, great feeling,
and your heroes are there. So that's changed my perspective.
So I will stand my ground that actually my opinion

(14:34):
may have changed on this too. Maybe we're coming of
age here and growing and learning. I used to say,
based on a comedian bit, basically that the lowest form
of broadcasting was a parade. But when you think about
what they get paid, Yeah, but they get paid. You
would be like coming down the street, it's Kermit the Frog.
You wouldn't do that and get paid.

Speaker 2 (14:52):
If you're getting paid big bucks, You're like, oh, there
is Snoopy coming down sixth Avenues this year.

Speaker 1 (14:58):
We welcome oh Bluuie it's band was created, and like, yeah,
it might be the lowest form of broadcasting, but I'll
take that paid check. So Parise aren't as lame as
we once thought.

Speaker 2 (15:10):
Some people say it's over promised and Paris the lowest forms.

Speaker 1 (15:13):
No, no, And it looks like New York had a
lot of fun today and if you were busy working,
because people have jobs and have lives, we're going to
tell you about some of the moments. A lot of
people were there. I'm still going through the highlights as
we speak. But a funny moment is one of the
players on the team, a bench player, Tyler Kolek, was

(15:34):
slapping the five, hands slapping the fives. We call it
I'm from Jersey slapping the fives, and uh, you know,
he was giving high five, slapping hands off the fans,
slapping five, slapping the five and security security just sees like,
you know, some random average height white guy. Yo, Hey,

(15:55):
hey Scrammel mding Don that is really funny, Like and
he's like, yo, but I'm on the team.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
But you know what he's saying, he's on the team,
Like how you were you got an A for the
group project and there did.

Speaker 1 (16:06):
Yeah, but he he he's still ABA champion. You can't
take it away from those funny moments are so it's embarrassing.
It's embarrassing, but still it doesn't take away from his
championship and that he's part of it. But it is like, hey,
you got yo, because they thought he was some nobody
from Nowhereville. But he gets the last laugh and that's
gone viral. There's another fun moment from today. Jalen Brunson,

(16:30):
who's so seft spoken, always says the right things, got
on the mic at city Hall. This is a highlight
from Brunson earlier today for the world.

Speaker 3 (16:38):
Lastly, there's a lot of people that have a lot
of negative stuff to say.

Speaker 1 (16:46):
There's a lot of people who have a lot of opinions.
But when you prove them wrong, you really have to.
You don't have to say to them.

Speaker 3 (16:55):
Oh nah, they don't deserve it.

Speaker 1 (17:06):
They don't deserve it. Appreciate you all, thank you.

Speaker 2 (17:08):
And that explains why he didn't really respond to stephen
A or Draymond.

Speaker 1 (17:13):
Or anyone that criticized him. Like you notice how he
was sort of like yeah, whatever, he because he doesn't
need to. He shut everyone up New York Man, and
they did. They did it, big congratulations. New York's been
waiting a long time for that, and of course, Mike Brown.

Speaker 2 (17:26):
Gets the key. Mike Brown getting the key to the city. Now,
this is a cool moment because who let the dogs out?
Not only did Mike Brown get the key to the
city from Mayor Montdami, what I thought was cool.

Speaker 1 (17:38):
The other night he was out to dinner.

Speaker 2 (17:39):
This is not a parade highlight, but he was aut
to dinner with his wife at a steakhouse in New
York City, and everyone in the restaurant gave Mike Brown
and his wife a standing ovation, and then.

Speaker 1 (17:47):
He started doing the who let the Dogs outside? Everybody
He's living the moment right now. So why they all are.
They're making their rounds, they're throwing out first pitches, they're
ruled up, Jimmy found and they celebrate at the parade.

Speaker 2 (17:59):
Actual brunts it in in heart threw some decent pitches
that the Yankees game closed this up, but they did
throw strikes.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
And of course, like any parade, this is not a
knock on the great New York City. There's always gonna
be like low lights. Right. So I saw the story
of people getting stuck in the subway right subway tunnels, Yeah,
because so many people were there. Man, it's wild. So
I'm glad people showed up and showed out. But there's
also those crazy videos, like you know, maybe one of

(18:28):
the best highlights was the twerking contest that took place.
It was like a little brawl, a little tussle that
broke out, but it's more laughs than any This woman
tosses this woman sitting on a garbage can straight off.
If you're gonna sit on stage, you better shake your ass.
She shakes her people pulled down her pants and she
just starts shaking the rump that they start fighting and
they start pulling off her pants. I love how she

(18:49):
just yanks her off. If you get out of here.
And then she gets up there and she pulls her
pants down. She starts speedbagging her cheeks and then they
get into a fight. So kind of funny. Mentioned that
was like your girlfriend, No I can't. I can't either,
But congratulations again. You'll be seeing more highlights throughout the night.
What stood out to you? Do parade stink or do

(19:10):
you change your mind when your team wins? You love
a good parade. Nice.

Speaker 2 (19:15):
Now, something we want to bring to the table being
that we do have World Cup fever.

Speaker 1 (19:18):
We talked about it last week.

Speaker 2 (19:19):
How a lot of international visitors and all the foreigners
visiting the United States loving the vibe that we've created
for the World Cup.

Speaker 1 (19:28):
Yeah, man, we're doing a great job.

Speaker 2 (19:29):
What I thought was cool, not only these videos of
people seeing waffle House or Times Square, you know, traveling
the whole country. We're seeing a lot of people represent
they're not only in United States their home country.

Speaker 1 (19:42):
We have something called it's their ethnicity.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
Yeah, we have something called the Grandma rule. And it
came to light when our buddy Cane.

Speaker 1 (19:48):
Hit us up. Yeah, he's like, yo, man, make it
makes sense. He goes, why aren't you wearing a USA jersey?
And the answer simple, I don't have one, but I would. Yeah.
They played tomorrow. If anyone wants to send me one,
maybe I'll run real quick and buy one. I will.
My mom sent me this one. There's a whole long story.
Check our Patreon if you want to know more about it.
My mom sent me this one. Got in time for
the game. Today they're taking on South Korea, and speaking

(20:08):
of hospitality, there's a love affair going on between Mexico
and South Korea. South Koreans are partying Wild Party and
big but the theory simple, and it's the grandma theory.
If your grandma spoke a different language, yes, or she
had a thick accent, then you're allowed to wear that
team's jersey. But I'll take it one step further. You
got to root for your people, and you got to

(20:30):
root for the team, but you never root against USA. Okay,
that's my rule. That's I don't root against the USA.
It's the grandma theory. Oh here's the thing. My grandma
is from Mexico. Let's let's put the proof of the pudding.

Speaker 2 (20:40):
If your grandma looks like this lady that our video
sky Spot has pulled up. If she makes her own
pasta in the basement and her own gravey your sauce
and speaks Italian, Hey.

Speaker 1 (20:49):
If it Daian's we're in the World Cup. You don't
think it Danan's. Yeah. I would even be wearing a
Dadia jersey if they were in the World cop.

Speaker 2 (20:58):
But the thing is, if grandma the grandma rule is simple.
If grandma speaks a different language, if grandma has specialty
foods from the homeland, you're allowed to pull for that tea.
You're allowed to have secondary interest.

Speaker 1 (21:09):
Now, maybe you don't root against the USA because that's
where you live. And hey man, they got a good squad.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
My grandma's were German and Russian and made no special
dishes and spoke English.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
It's really like, I don't have a tie. Are you
more How connected are you to your roots? Some people
are more connected than others. So that's why you're seeing
American people represent their ethnicity, you know, as far as nationality,
USA All day, Go USA, and that's tomorrow, though today
Mexico's taking it in South Korea. I do want to

(21:39):
point out one more it's a nice jersey. One more thing.
I was gonna wear my Santa Claus jersey, but instead
I just wear my SCENTI jersey. Love that.

Speaker 2 (21:45):
Can I bring up one final thing about the World Cup,
and then we'll wish everyone a great long weekend. Enjoy
your World Cup and enjoy everything you're doing. Enjoy your
toy story. Five if you got the little kiddos mm hmm, Couvino,
this is a great idea when you are represent the
USA or whatever jersey you want. Soccer jerseys require one
size up always. It is not an oversized hockey jersey.

(22:09):
It is not an NFL jersey. It's not a button
up baseball jersey.

Speaker 1 (22:12):
Otherwise you're doing a fat sausage.

Speaker 2 (22:14):
It's if you it's it's like sizing, right if you're
a men's large. If you get a men's large, you're
gonna look like a fucking sausage.

Speaker 1 (22:21):
No, no, no, you don't step up like Cavino is a
men's large. But this is an XL exactly. You know
what it works. How large would have looked like he
just ate one too many takethos. Yeah, unless you're a
bill like Ronaldo and you're not. Yeah, you gotta go
one jersey size bigger. Always.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
It's the difference of Cavino looking like Mario Lopez or
George Lopez.

Speaker 1 (22:42):
Yeah. It is the rule, and it's the Grandma rule,
and you're allowed to play by those rules if they
apply to you. So that being said, vaptos vocals forever
in USA, All day, USA, USA, you and USA. Hey,
thank you, have a great weekend. Enjoy until then are
even there, she babies, Enjoy the World Cup. See you
in the over promise land. Gomebye,
