Craig Way, glad to be backwith you again. If you like to
(00:33):
reach us on the text line, you can do that. All you have
to do is text your question orcomment to eight one five three zero.
You start with the word Texas, then your question of comment for the word
Texas, then either your question commentwhatever might be the eight one five three
zero standard messaging and data RaSE camamply. So here's our number two here
(00:54):
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred zone, Craig Way, alongside the producer Cameron
Parker. And so I was goneobviously for for a couple of weeks.
Uh, you had what a coupleof days here and there that you that
you that you did take off.Yeah, so we didn't have local programming
(01:15):
Thursday and Friday, and then theweekend before also took Thursday and Friday.
Okay, all right, So soyou were you you were out from the
little bit. How closely do youkeep up with things when you're out,
like on a vacation or out oftown or whatever. How closely do you
keep up with like the national sportsscene or things that are going on.
(01:38):
I would say probably the same thatI do even when I am working.
Okay, all right, it's kindof it's kind of hard not to You've
been doing it for so long.I mean, now the are cell phones.
You're getting every single update you know, on our phone, NotI vacations,
Twitter, social media. So Istayed. Now there might be a
day where I'm just like, hey, I'm just gonna take my phone,
(01:59):
put it away and not really checkanything until the night, maybe the next
morning. But you know, it'shard to not step up to date now
as opposed to maybe twenty thirty yearsago, because you kind of feel like
you miss dall on something a littlefomo working there if you don't do it,
if something major happens on that andI know what you mean, I
(02:23):
pretty much could I rent a house, uh there at the beach at Sunset
Beach there in North Carolina every summerso it's nice and it's whatever ocean front
and it's all that kind of stuff, and then jump in the ocean or
sit outside and you know, reador this or that. But also I
mean it's a home with modern conveniencesand things, including you know, cable
(02:44):
television, so you know, we'dbe watching games and things like that.
So it is kind of important todo that. And I had my computer
with me, so I did watchthe introductory news conference of Jim Schlosnagel as
the new baseball coach at the Universityof Texas. I watched that on my
laptop there from Texas Sports off ofthat and it almost as interesting as all
(03:09):
that was. Was has been thereaction of fans on both sides of the
Brasses Valley and being at Texas Aand M. We're over on this side
at the University of Texas. Iknow that a lot of long worn fans
are very very excited about this andlooking forward to what Slash can do.
I know there's a lot of folksin the valley who were pretty upset or
(03:34):
have kind of taken on the attitudeof good riddance and YadA YadA and so
on and so forth. It isthe way of the business. And I
know long worn fans are very veryvery very quick to remind Texas A and
M fans all so, you're talkingabout being betrayed and he lied to you
and did Austis it didn't seem tobother you when he went from TCU to
(03:58):
A and M. And I haven'thad any really give a really good response
on all of that. It's theway that the business works with coaching,
and there's going to be people upseton one end of it, there's gonna
be people excited on the other endof It's just that's just the way of
the world in coaching. It justit just happens to be. That's that's
(04:19):
how it's going to be in coaching. And there's been a great deal of
speculation and conversation about the portal andthe players who would go over from A
and M and ultimately decided not togo over to the University of Texas.
Uh, there's been the battle onthe recruiting scene, all of this,
all of this is only going tospice up the rivalry anymore. And not
(04:44):
that and Roger Wallace said this tome in a text, Not that not
that true died in the wool ofheavy duty. Aggie fans needed any more
reason their motivation to hate all thingsburnt orange and taxes and all this.
It's not like they need anything, but here was something else. As well.
This is part of what that rivalryis going to be all about,
(05:05):
now that these two sides are goingto get back into playing each other in
all forms and measures of athletic competition. And you know, they've been playing
Texas A and M A one offin baseball every year a Tuesday night non
conference since A and M departed forthe SEC in Texas was still in the
(05:28):
Big Twelve. That's been going on. They have met a couple of times
in basketball, and then they havemet in women's basketball. They met in
swimming and diving. They've met intennis, in soccer, in golf,
in track and field, volleyball, virtually every sport they have other than football.
(05:50):
And we know now, of courseobviously the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend that's
going to happen again. And forthose of you who are or feel that
they are waiting for the other shoeto drop, you know, waiting waiting
(06:10):
for that other that that this gameis going to be moved forward. It'll
be built to Black Friday, it'llbe moved to Thanksgiving night, everything,
everything, everything. I've been toldby people who are close to those kinds
of decisions that that's not going tohappen. This is definitely going to be
a Saturday game. And we sawthose kickoff times listed earlier, and sometimes
sometimes kickoff times don't necessarily impact thedate. If a game is going to
(06:38):
be moved to an earlier day, they might have a kickoff time listed,
but it could be a kickoff timelist on an earlier day. That will
not be the case in this case. It's going to be on the Saturday
of Thanksgiving weekend, So just justso you know, prepare for that.
It'll be on Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, and there'll be a lot of great
build up to it. However, there's a lot of great build up to
(07:01):
all things Texas with the SEC.You know, their first conference game will
be on September twenty eighth against MississippiState. They have him back to back
weeks games against Oklahoma and Georgia ohU of course in Dallas and Georgia at
home, and then of course theyhave Florida coming in. They have to
go to Arkansas in November as wellas the Texas A and M. They
(07:26):
will play all three of those rivalteams away from Austin this particular year.
But Georgia and Florida. Both willcome to Austin, Kentucky will come to
Austin, Mississippi State will come toAustin, Texas. Walster go to Nashville
to play Vanderbilt. Then we knowabout the massive non conference game they have
on September seventh in ann Arbor,Michigan against the Michigan Wolverines. So there'll
(07:49):
be plenty of time for all ofthis to ramp up to the excitement that
will take place when they get togetheron the tail end of it there on
November thirtieth. There'll be plenty oftime for that to happen, but there'll
be plenty of other impactful games priorto that. And let me also say
(08:11):
this, both teams could be elevento zero going in, or oh and
eleven going in, or six andfive at eight and three, or two
seven and fours or a nine andtwo and a four in so whatever it
is, Yeah, it does fallinto that category about tossing record books out
of windows and stuff like that, especially since it will be their first meeting
(08:33):
in thirteen years. It'll be thefirst time they will have met on the
football field since Justin Tucker, whois now an NFL kicking legend, a
long time grizzled NFL veteran. Thiswill be the first time that Texas and
A and M will have played infootball since Custin Tucker was kicking for Texas
and banged home the forty yard fieldgoal on Thanksgiving Night, which at the
(08:58):
time, as I mentioned on theair, five, I'll play the rivalry.
It was as Big twelve opponents andnow they start a new chapter and
that'll come at the end of November, but there'll be plenty of excitement in
other sports and other things, noquestion about it going forward. And I
think that's good. It's good forboth schools, it's good for the conference,
it's good for the rivalry. It'sgood for the state as well.
(09:20):
And I think we can all lookforward to that. But there's a lot
more to look forward to other thanthat game at the end of November.
There's plenty of other exciting things tolook out for going forward. Okay,
coming up, got some other profootball notes to get to. Gene Watson
from the Chicago White Sox front officewill join us in the four o'clock hour
(09:41):
to talk to Major League Baseball. The All Star rosters have been announced and
we'll get his thoughts on that,so we've got a lot more to get
to here on the Monday afternoon onsports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of
