(00:03):
He's a Texas legend, a Hallof Fame broadcaster, the voice of the
Texas Longhorns, and your host ofthe Craigway Show. Here he is now
Craig Way. So good a Ford, everybody. Welcome to the program here
(00:30):
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone, where you can always listen to this
for free on the iHeartRadio app.Welcome to your weekend. My name is
Craig Way. Glad to have youwith us. And as I will always
say, if Friday is indeed thefinal day of your work, good on
you, good for you, Gladto hear that. I hope your weekend
is launched into a good place. If, however, you do not have
(00:59):
Friday as the benchmark to start theweekend, if it's indeed like your Wednesday,
or your man even your Monday,or whatever it is, I hope
it goes well for you. Asalways, my name is Craig Wag Glad
to have you with us. Alwayspleased to be joined by the producer of
the program, Cameron D. Parker. The Deal on the birth certificate stands
for Dallas, as in the namesakeof his dad's favorite football team, which
(01:25):
in turn became his favorite football teamat leads through the twenty twenty three season.
Then, while he claims to stillhave them as his favorite football team,
he has vowed not to watch themfollowing the you might say unfortunate end
to their twenty twenty three sees him, but he says he'll keep up with
(01:45):
them. We'll see how that goes. He's able to keep up with them,
like, for example, the storywe had yesterday about Jerry Jones and
the paternity lawsuit against him, wherethe judge wrote that the judge ruled that
the arrangement that Jerry had with awoman who is apparently the mother of the
(02:08):
woman who is trying to assue Jerryin court is a valid agreement. So
Jerry wins that kind of round.Although in less than two weeks they do
have the big, the big courtcase coming up between the two of them,
So you'll be keeping up with that, even though you're not going to
be watching the Cowboys this year. But you'll keep up with those kinds of
things. Huh uh sort of.I mean, what a really, really
(02:32):
weird story. I just feel badfor the daughter involved in this because obviously
a lot happened without her opinion onit. Because of course, between Jerry
Jones and the mother and now it'saffecting her life, and I just I
truly feel bad for her. Don'tfeel bad for Jerry though, don't feel
(02:53):
bad for him, No, no, I don't. I don't think anybody
feels too poorly for Jerry's es actuallyafter yesterday's ruling yesterday winning the first round
of that, so we'll see thatis going forward. I mean, he's
been paying millions of dollars to themother of this child, and they were
supposed to be this DA, thisnon disclosure agreement, all this kind of
(03:13):
stuff, and that's what's being contestedand all that. So we'll see how
it is. But there are manyother things to get to on the program.
Did you I asked you this yesterdayand you were very very busy yesterday,
and I think you might even havebeen even busier today. I know
there were meetings and preparations for ourjaunt up to the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex
(03:40):
to get ready for SEC Football mediaDays Monday through Thursday of next week.
We'll both be headed up there onSunday. So my question was, did
you have a chance to watch anyof the Wimbledon semi files the men's semifinals
today, and I'm going to guessyou were probably a little too wrapped up
to do that. I was ableto follow it a little bit. I
mean, Alkrez, he is startingto turn into that next tennis superstar if
(04:05):
he not, if he's not alreadythere, he definitely kind of has that
his azz that I think a lotof people look for and superstars. Lost
that first set, which is agreat first set against Metaphidev and then came
back one three straight to advance tothe final, and of course Djokovic just
outlasted Musseti pretty pretty easily. Thesecond set came down to the wire.
(04:29):
But this is kind of I thinkwhat tennis fans want, and I mean,
if you're curious about ratings and allthat stuff, it's probably what the
television, what ESPN wants, isyou have Djokovic, who might be the
most hated tennis players since agacy inAgasy. I don't know how hated that
Agassy was really. I mean,he certainly wasn't on the level of McEnroe.
(04:54):
Yeah, so there were a lotof people really like Andre and I
think people like I'll Rest too.I mean, he's he's only twenty to
twenty one years old, so nota lot to hate about him, which
of course we shouldn't hate anybody. But you mean, that's what kind of
what these types of events do,right, We see all of their personalities
on full display camera in someone's face. It's easy to dislike someone. And
(05:15):
Djokovic really hasn't helped himself in alot of regards. But I think every
sport needs a villain. He's playedthat villain exceptionally well because he, of
course has won the most Grand slamsThursday, He's won twenty four Grand Slam
titles. That'll make you a villainmore than anything. And then the anti
vaxxing stance. Also, you knowthat Privoti from playing in the US hope
in a few years back. Thatwinning possibly more. Yeah, but he
(05:38):
did win in straight sets, andhe overcame a service break. He was
down a service breaking the second setto MUSEETI came back and won that,
and so he won in straight setssix four, seven, sixty sixty four.
And Carlos Akarez, the defending championwho beat Djokovic in the Gentleman's Final
a year ago in four sets, over came dropping the first set to Medvedev
to win that. So yeah,it's it's a rematch, and I agree
(06:00):
with the other ESPN is happy withwhat they got there off of that,
and probably the All England club ishappy with it that that that worked out
the way it did also, soI agree with you on that. Yesterday,
yesterday we were discussing on the airbecause of the timing of it.
(06:25):
Paul Skeens, the pirate rookie whohad no hitter through seven innings, he
had eleven strikeouts. He through seveninnings had thrown ninety nine pitches, but
that included only throwing six in theseventh and he was lifted from the game
at that point, and it madea lot of people grumble. It's funny.
(06:48):
I was listening to the Dodgers radiobroadcast when it was out last night
driving around Actually, when I wasdriving back later and heard Rick Monday,
who's the analyst on the radio broadcast, after it was brought up by Tim
Nefert, who's on the play byplay for the Dodgers on radio, about
(07:09):
him, you know, being pulledafter seven innings having turned ninety nine pitches,
and he said, I guess that'sjust the way it is right now,
you get to the hundred pitch buried, no matter how well you're doing,
you're going to be lifted from thegame. Uh. He said,
he seemed pretty fresh, although thePirates manager said no, no, he
was pretty tire. And Rick Mendygoes, oh, yeah, six pitches,
(07:30):
he was exhausted. Get him astretcher, saying that, well,
Paul Schemes today was named as thestarter for the National League for the All
Star Game next Tuesday in Arlington.Makes sense, yep. Tory Lavallo is
the of course, the manager ofthe Nation League Arizona Diamondbacks manager, and
(07:50):
he said he called into Skeens interviewon the Dan Patrick Show this morn so
he called me, so, Paul, First of all, how you doing.
They just want to congratulate you.I've chosen you to be the starter
for the National League in the twentytwenty four All Star Game. I'm really
really excited for you. Unbelievable honor, so well deserved, super excited to
(08:11):
make this announcement. And Patrick gasLavello said, is Paul on a pitch
count? And he laughed. Afterwards, he goes, We'll see what's going
on there. We've got eleven guysto get there. Paul's gonna throw up
a big zero in the first inningfor us and we'll take it from there.
That's that's how it is in theAll Star Game. These guys are
not going to work more than aninning this All Star Game. And if
(08:39):
I get a chance to go,and I don't know, I mean,
we're going to be busy in Dallas, but it would be the fourth one
for me to tend if I ifI got a chance to go, Lend
and I went as part of ourhoneymoon two years ago to see the one
at Dodgers Stadium. I went tothe first one in Arlington back in nineteen
ninety five, and prior to that, I went to the All Star Game.
(09:01):
I covered it for the radio stationin the Astrodome in nineteen eighty six,
and in those games you had RogerClemens and Fernando Valenzuela pitching, and
they were pitching more than just oneinning in those games. But it's changed
a lot, obviously with the AllStar Game. But Paul Skins is the
(09:22):
is the starter for the National Leaguefor the All Star Game, and I'd
say that's that's deserving. With whathe's done so far this year. Let
me give you a trivia question,Craig. Yeah, how many rookies have
won the cy Young Award? Wow? I do not know the answer.
Well, valan Zuela's won it.He won it, he won Rookie of
(09:46):
the Year and the cy Young hisrookie season. But I don't know of
how many others have. That's agreat question. As you pull up the
answer and the answer is I'm stilllooking. Oh okay, it looks like
(10:07):
the last one may have been Valonezuelain nineteen eighty one, might be the
only one, might be the onlyone. I know. I remember the
big Hulla Blue made about when hewon it in eighty one, I think,
and for folks who don't remember whathe did that year, and some
of it kind of got wiped awaybecause of what happened with the baseball strike,
(10:31):
the fifty day strike and they hadto split the seasons all that.
But Fernando's first five games were shutouts. He was incredible what he did.
I think it's just Valonzuela. Yeah, yeah, because the only other ones
they see Kershaw was not a rookie, not a Lemons, was not a
rookie, right, and I believeKershaw is the youngest by age to win
(10:54):
okay, the cy Young Award.Okay, well, that makes sense and
I could see Schemes winning it thisyear very easily. Yeah, Balonzuela is
the only one Okay to have everwin the Cy Young as a rookie.
Yeah, he won Rookie of theYear and Cy Young that year nineteen eighty
one, and me as a Dodgerfan, I celebrated because they won the
(11:16):
World Series that year. That wasthe strike year, and so they went
to division Series like we see todayin baseball. They had a first half
champion and the second half champion, and the Dodgers won the first half and
the Astros won the second half. And one of those weird things, the
(11:37):
best combined record of both halves inthe West belonged to neither the Dodgers nor
the Astros. It belonged to theReds, but they didn't get in because
they didn't win. They weren't infirst place when the season stopped for the
strike in June, and then theAstros were better in the second half.
(11:58):
And in the American in the NationalLeague East, it was very similar to
the Cardinals, I think had thebest record overall, but they didn't win.
It was the Expos in the Phillies. Keith Morland was playing on the
Phillies team in nineteen eighty one. They were the defending World champions, our
friend in broadcast Colleague. And thenthen the Phillies lost to the Expos in
(12:20):
the Division Series and the Dodgers weredown two games to none in the best
of five. Well dropped the firsttwo games in Houston, went back to
La won. Friday said, andI think beat Nolan Ryan on Sunday to
win to win that Division series. And then the Dodgers beat the Expos in
the NLCS the aforementioned Monday, whowas playing for the Dodgers, in a
ninth inning home run. And thenthe Dodgers beat the Yankees in the World
(12:43):
Series. That's the last time theDodgers played the Yankees in the World Series
all the time they played, alot of folks thought this might be the
year. But the Yankees had beenin a free fall, and the Dodgers,
by the way, and looked toogood of late. Either. They
got swept by the Phillies. Nowthe Phillies had the best record in all
of baseball. But LA didn't looktoo good in that series against Philadelphia.
Right now, the teams that lookthe best in baseball, the Guardians in
(13:05):
the American League and the Phillies inthe National League. They look like the
two best teams at least at thispoint. All right, we got a
lot to get to. We gotsome football notes. We'll get to some
basketball as well. We do haveinconceivable on Friday, and we know what
inconceivable on Friday means. Oh yes, we traveled the more flaccid of the
lower forty eight states. And thisis monumental quick because we have not done
(13:28):
a Florida man Friday together in amutmosta month. Yeah, well, we're
gonna make up for it today.Let me tell you, we're gonna make
up for it today. I'm justsaying you eight, we've got that coming
up and a lot more here ona Friday afternoon. Glad to have you
with us here on Sports Radio AMthirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
