(00:00):
We welcome me back for our numbertwo of the program and we continue here
obviously a lot of football to discussbasketball. It's funny going to the text
line, I had mentioned that theUnited States, the US Olympic team narrowly
as narrow margin as you can haveand is to win one one defeated South

(00:21):
Sudan, a South Sudan team coachby roy Al Ivy, the lifetime longmoin,
and somebody on the text line said, our team needs to recruit some
of these players. Reach out toIvy for some insight. Most of those
guys are beyond college now and professionalsover there as well. But they were,
they were impressive. And there's acouple of NBA players on the team,
aren't there. Yeah, that Southsu Dane team, or at least

(00:42):
they were, you know, roleplayers in the NBA. If I remember
correctly, there's a couple of playerson that squad. There's been a few
guys, most of them now Ithink play internationally. Yeah, internationally,
I think a couple of guys.I think, like Carlick Jones, I
plaining cues with the Maps and theNuggets and then maybe the Bulls for a
little bit kind of bounced around you. I think you actually played with the

(01:03):
Texas Legends at one point as well. And a few other guys, but
most of them none of them arecurrently right on an NBA roster. There's
one college player, maluik ma Locke. I can't see his last name,
but he he currently plays for theDuke Blue Devils. Okay, all right,
uh so there you are. Soanyway, and even though we've been

(01:26):
telling you about our talkback feature towin a copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football
magazine, uh, you can dothat. We're giving away ten today.
We've given away four already to peoplehave used that feature. You can also
use the talkback feature to us anytime you want, just to yeah,
or you can just you know, text in the text line is there.

(01:47):
What you do is you text theword Texas follow by your questioner comment to
eight one five to three zero.So you text the word Texas followed by
your question or comment to eight oneto five three zero, standard messaging in
data hbam. Why However, ifyou want to win a copy of the
magazine, you have to use thetalk back feature, and we got to
hear your voice, so you haveto do that if you want to do

(02:07):
that. Okay, the figurative figurativesecond half of the Major League Baseball season
is under right now. I sayfigurative because all teams are right out about
one hundred games. I was watchingDodgers Red Sox back in the hotel room
last night and it was the onehundredth game of the season for LA and

(02:29):
the Dodgers ended up sweeping the RedSox, which was impressive considering they were
awful going into the break. Theygot swept by the Phillies, who have
the best record in all of baseball, and they're really really good right now,
and they dropped two or three atDetroit to the Zigers. They went
one in five on that road trip. But they started off the figurative second
half by sweeping the Red Sox athome, so they've kind of righted the

(02:53):
ship a little bit, and theyhave an eight game lead in the Nation
League West. However, I wantedto bring up Astros and Rangers because now
it looks like the Astros are verymuch alive and well in the American League
West. Remember when they were fourand twelve to start the season. Remember
that, and remember when they wereten games out of first place in May,

(03:19):
and I remember them saying that.I remember the conversation was about it
was the latest. I think itwas something like the latest in the season
that a defending world or a defendingdivision champion in the case of the Astros,

(03:45):
were ten games out of first intheir own division the very next season,
something like that. But now they'vecaught the Mariners, and in fact
they are even in the winning percentageand they're tied atop the standings in the
American League West. But the Astershave clearly turned it around. They've gotten

(04:09):
good hitting and they've gotten some clutchpitching. Yeah, it's not really a
surprise considering they've been to six seventhstraight ALCSS. They're fantastic ball club,
fantastic players. You kind of knewthey were going to turn it around.
I was more concerned with the Rangers'ability to turn it around and didn't get
off to a great start after gettingbashed by the Orioles in the first two

(04:31):
games one yesterday. But a toughlook so far. But you know,
here they are, Here comes thehere comes the Emperor, and what's the
dark side Star Wars called not theRebellion but the oh Return to the revenge
of the Sith Yeah, whatever therecomes to Sith Lord as the Astros as

(04:51):
the Empire. Yeah, is strikingback now. And I'm sure the Rangers
look, Ranger fans look at theAstro is the evil Empire. But we
are the Thinning champions. But itwould be nice to, you know,
maybe get back to the playoffs thisseason. Well, there's that stat about
Bruce Bochie. Teams the year afterthey've won a World Series, they have

(05:12):
never made the playoffs. Yeah, that's weird, considering they won World Series
in twenty ten, twenty twelve, and twenty fourteen. I know this all
too painfully well as a Dodger fan, but Bochie has done a tremendous job
as manager. But in those offseasons in between twenty eleven, twenty thirteen,
twenty fifteen, they did not dowell. And it's some of it's

(05:32):
just flat out free agent losses. This year Josh Young still rehab assignment maybe
and then this month August most likely. It seems like so when you when
you lose Josh Young until freaking Augustof a season, it's not great,
especially for an offense that has beenstruggling this season. The Rangers are actually

(05:56):
further back in the wild card racethan they are in the division race.
Yeah, they're only five back ofthe Astros and Mariners for the American League
West crown. But to try toget into wild call right now, there's
seven and a half out of thelast wildcard spot right now. If the
playoffs ended, if the regular seasonin the day of the playoff teams,
your division champions would be the Orioles, the Guardians of the Astros on the

(06:19):
tie break with the Mariners, andthe three wild card teams would be the
Yankees, Twins, and Royals. And because the Mariners are two and a
half back of Kansas City, hereare the Mariners are tied for the division
lead. But on a tie break, the Astros would get the division crown
and the Mariners would completely miss outon the playoffs simply because the other wildcard

(06:45):
teams are better than have better records. The Yankees, the Twins, the
Royals, and the Red Sox allhave better records. This even after the
Red Sox were swept by the Dodgersover the weekend. So it's tough flip
for them because they have really struggledof late, and the Rangers have been
okay of late, they won sixof their last ten. There was all

(07:08):
that natural high that came from hostingthe All Star Game. We got a
chance to go to that. Wehad a lot of fun watching that.
And there's a lot of folks whoare hoping and looking for the Rangers to
get healthy again and and be areal contender, at least for a postseason
spot. Yeah, in five gamesisn't insurmountable. It's actually considering how bad

(07:29):
they have looked at times the season, five games, I would take it.
And of course, remember how lastseason ended in the regular season with
the Astros and the Rangers flip flopping, Houston winning the AL West, Texas
having to play in the first round, and of course the Rangers ended up
winning the World Series. So butto your point, Rangers got a wild
card spot and this season doesn't lookas likely. It looks more likely to

(07:53):
win the AL West. But howsurprising if you were in the seasons Mariners,
Astros, Rangers that either outside ofthe division leader, no one else
would be in a wildcard spot headinginto August. So, as you how
great the central in the AL Easthas been, but also kind of how
poor and disappointing. The rest ofthe Ale West has been yeah, true,

(08:13):
true enough. And in the nationallythe Phillies have the best overall record
in baseball with sixty three wins. The Dodgers have the number two record,
the Brewers have the third record, third best record, so the three division
leaders do have the three best records, and then following that are the Braves
and then the Cardinals, who've beena surprise to some folks. The Diamondbacks

(08:37):
have kind of righted the ship alittle bit, as had the pod Race.
She asked. Both are trailing inLos Angeles by eight games in the
National League West standings, but they'rekind of getting their act together, both
the Diamondbacks, who are wildcard andreached the World Series before falling to the
Rangers, and the and the podRace the wildcard teams today. However,

(08:58):
if the regular season where too,it would be the Braves, the Cardinals,
and right now the Mets on atie break ahead of the Diamondbacks,
but their winning percentages are identical rightnow and San Diego same thing, just
right behind it as well. ThePirates a bit of a surprise as well,

(09:20):
just a half game out of awildcard spot. And then the Giants
are three back after that, Sothere's some surprises out of that. But
some teams like who were big lastyear, like the Diamondbacks and the Padres,
are starting to kind of get theiract together a little bit, even
as they try to catch up tothe Dodgers, who have been clobbered by
injuries. They had ten ten pitcherson the injured list last week. But

(09:46):
but Clayton Kershaw is going to makehis return on Thursday. He got a
rehab start as Simon and Roundrock lastFriday night. It was so so for
him there, but it was moreabout his technique and getting his rhythm back
and I'm back and all that sortof stuff. So they've gotten him back.
They're hoping to get a couple otherguys back, but that's another guy
to keep it on. Just aswe're talking about the Rangers trying to get

(10:07):
Josh Young back and getting and gethealthy, there's several teams and on top
of all of this camp, it'sa trade deadline coming up. Yeah,
buyers and sellers. So we'll findout and we'll visit with g Watson later
this week to talk about that. All Right, that's a look at major
League Baseball. Up next, we'llgo back to college football. We're going
to hear more from Logorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian from Texas High School Coaches
