(00:06):
It's the Craig Way Shop with thevoice of the Texas Longhorns and Hall of
Fame broadcast there, Craig Way,are you starting us out with something unusual
today or just running the mill fromthe music files today? Just run of
the mill. Let's goles, nottrying to get any more lawsuits. Yeah

(00:26):
right, it's a Monday, sowe'll we'll just do that. That's probably
a good thing. Hey, Onething we did want to do is mentioned
if you didn't see it, theseason of professional golf's major championships is now
over. It's done because Xander Schoffleywon it the Open Championship at Royal Troon

(00:56):
yesterday. He had a final roundsixty five to win this. And by
the way, it's the seventh consecutivemajor one by the American golfer and that's
the longest such streak since they capturedthirteen straight from seventy four to seventy seven
as well. But Shotley did itas well. In fact, let's hear

(01:19):
from him. We shot that sixtyfive in the final round at Royal Train.
How special is it to get yourhands on this famous trophy, the
Clara jet. I just can't waitto drink out of it. What's going
to be the temple of choice. My dad's here with me, so I'm
gonna let him do the honor whateverhe wants. What does this championship mean

(01:40):
to you? Then? It's itmeans a lot. It's something all of
us play for, and it reallyis a dream come true to be holding
this. And it definitely hasn't sunkin yet. You know, my brain
is still grinding on this amazing propertyhere, just trying to get through the
hole. So I can't wait tosit back and have a moment with this.

(02:02):
Claire Johnny, you obviously just wonyour first major championships so recently.
What inner confidence did that give youcoming down the stretch here today? I
thought it would help me, andit actually did. I had this sense
of calm, a calm I didn'thave when I played earlier at the PGA,

(02:23):
And for some reason, I wascalm and I felt collected. And
I was telling Austin on my caddyon the eighteenth hole that I felt pretty
calm coming down this stretch and hesaid he was about to puke on the
eighteenth t Hopefully you would. No. I just told myself just to hit
it. Down there like you haveall day and really just kept kept moving

(02:46):
along. Listen, it's been ajoy to watch you this week. Many
many congratulations, Champion Golfer of theYear, Thank you so much. So
there it is Xander Shoffley won it, and and cam and looking how this
thing he just kind of seized controlof it on a day, the final

(03:07):
day, when it looked like itwas up there for anybody to take,
or at least several anyway, Yeah, major props Axenter for winning his first
ever major championship. Stop that. No, no, you don't get to
do this anymore. You don't getto slag on him anymore. You know
why you don't get to slag onhim anymore. Only sixteen golfers have won
two majors in the same year, and he's one of those. Only sixteen

(03:32):
have done that, names like WalterHagen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicholas,
Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, LeeTrevino. He's in that company now.
He's won more majors than most guyson tour. Now he's won two in
one year. So you don't getto give him partial credit anymore. You

(03:53):
don't get to give him half creditanymore. He's for real, He's won
two now. Also Speth won twoand fifteen should have won four, and
then Brooks Kafka won yep two.Mara did it, believe it or not.
In ninety eight he won the OpenChampionship of the Masters in ninety eight,
so which rare, very rare, and huge credit to him because he

(04:14):
he did validate that win at Valhalla. Some call it the Greater Louisville Open,
which is which is why you knowI said before I don't count as
a major, but you know thismight have been, may have been one
and a half majors because of howtough the conditions were this weekend. What
he did on Saturday, shot atsixty nine in the worst of the weather,
while while Shane Lowry, who atone point was eight under par on

(04:39):
Saturday he was five shots clear ofeverybody ended up finishing up one under on
the day after just a really reallytough back nine may double at the eighth
the postage stamp. And then onSunday when it looked like for for a
moment, oh, it's gonna beh Billy Horschel. No, it's gonna
be Tristan Lawardce. No, it'sgonna be Shane la alrighty, maybe no

(05:00):
here comes here comes justin Rose Andin the back nine when everybody made the
turn, and of course, aswe always have heard, the majors don't
start until the back nine. OnSunday, Hey on the eleventh hole,
one of the toughest holes on thegolf course, center softly from the rough,
stuck it from the fescue, stuckit to two feet, made birdie,

(05:21):
made birdie again. I think gonwas the thirteenth hole, made birdie
on the fourteenth hole, and thatwas it. After he made bertie on
that par par three fourteenth, thatwas it for Xander Softley. And you
heard in that interview how the PJwin helped him calm him down. And
the stick against Xander fair or unfair. You know he's been he's been so

(05:43):
consistent since coming on the golf scenefrom San Diego State twenty seventeen that it
felt like, oh, he's alwaysin the majors, but he can't get
it done. The same thing withPhil Michelson right where it took him forty
four to forty five majors before hefinally won his first one. And it
can be unfair because He's been soconsistent, while other guys who might get
more praise aren't as consistent. Inthe majors, like Patrick Cantley, they

(06:05):
get ruled that ow they just can'tget it done on the big station.
For a while, that was Sandersrep until the PGA, But then a
lot of people, including myself, lay let's see it. Let me see
you do it at a course likeAugusta or US Open or an Open Championship.
Right where this tournament really separated.I think the more creative, the

(06:26):
crafty or golfers from those who arejust track ben golfers like Bryson. I
like Bryson, I think his winat Pinehurst was incredible, but you put
him out in the elements of whathappens. He almost shoots eighty each day.
Same thing with Rory. I don'tknow what happened with Roy Mncroy this
tournament. But a lot of theseguys the top of the leaderboard, Justin
Rose, Billy Horschell, Russell,Henley, Shane Lowry, rom Scotty sun
Jay, Adam Scott and Zendersoftley aregolfers who can get it done on the

(06:51):
regular PGA tour courses. But thenalso on links golf courses with the win
in tough conditions, so huge ratCenter softly, he went out and he
deserved to win this major championship. And after this season, after all the
PJA Tour wins that Scotti Scheffler hashad, it's Center Shoftley who will finish
the season with more major championships. How about that? Yeah, that is

(07:14):
it's interesting, all right, Soyou've restore my faith in you now that
you're willing to look at the bigpicture overall and say the guy is deserving.
Yes, after all that. Okay, as we mentioned, long Oorn's
head coach, Chief Circasian will likesome of the other coaches, if you
ever go down to Texas high schoolcoaching school, it's it's amazing. I
used to joke about it being theworld's largest convocation of bike shorts and heat

(07:38):
bomb, but it's so much morethan that. Now. First one,
they don't wear bike shorts anymore, those polyester snaps on those. Most coaches
dressed pretty well at coaching school, even when they're wearing shorts, and they're
comfortable in there. And if youwalk around the exhibit hall and you see
all the things that are there, where you see everything from sports drenks to

(07:59):
blocking sleds, to digital digital recordingthings, all that kind of stuff.
And then there's the lectures. Soa lot of them give lectures different coaches
of the collegiate and sometimes a professionalvariety. Yesterday, longrn's head coach Steve
Sarkisan and his entire staff did achalk talk with coaches that wanted to come.

(08:22):
This was after we did the annualpanel discussion. We're all thirteen Division
one FBS football coaches in the stateof Texas all on one stage, along
with Craig bole, the new executivedirector of the American Football Coach Association.
So there were fourteen on the stageand I've really been pleased and thrilled and
had the honor being able to moderatethis panel discussion for the past twenty years

(08:43):
and you get some really interesting takeson a lot of things. Aside from
that, the coaches also did separatenews conferences, especially for those who weren't
able to be up at SEC MediaDay. The case of Texes, so
Long WARN's head coach Steve Sarkeesian wastalking. Here's here's what he had to

(09:05):
say. His first opening comments,Uh, they're at Coaching School. They're
in the press conference yesterday. Thiskind of always piggybacks Media Days and it's
just kind of lets you know, football is really right around the corner,
and so Coaches School is always greatto be part of the impact that the
high school coaches have not only infootball, but but in every sport.

(09:31):
The impact that they have in ouryoung people to help prepare them for life
is vitally important. So the factthat we get to be here to support
that offer encouragement and support to themis I think big and so but but
for me, it's always that kindof kind of marker about about a week
from now, we're we're getting readyto go, and so I always kind

(09:54):
of kind of count back from MediaDays to Coaches School and then we got
we start training camp and so thisis this is that time of year.
So looking forward to it. Yeah, it's Longard, said coach Steve Sark,
and I We're gonna hear much morefrom Sark throughout the course of the
