(00:00):
We did have some folks already replyon the talk back feature to try to
get a copy of Dave Campbell's Texas. But here's a couple of them.
Anyway, to sample a couple ofthese folks who if call in, listen,
listen. This is what we're askingyou to do. If you want
to win a copy of the magazine, all you have to do is downloaded
on the app on your phone ifyou haven't already, the iHeartRadio app.
(00:20):
You pull up AM thirteen under thezone and then you hit the red button
to record something like this. Everyyear of following high school football, particularly
local football, also who's on thecover and what's going to be the results
of those people on the cover forthe upcoming season, also for college football,
particularly following him locally with Texas andparticularly I'm interested to see how they
(00:43):
can to be covering as far asTexas SEC what they're gonna have to say.
But anyway, it's just a greattime looking forward to the magazine and
this looks like it's going to besomething new since Texas is going to SEC.
But once again, thank you forgiving me an option. Yeah,
see that is really good. Heyguys, this is beat of events.
The best thing I love about DaveCampbell's Texas Football is everything and anything you
(01:07):
need to know about Texas Football isin there, great magazine every year.
Hokum, all right, thank you, Bens. That's twice from you to
FNS. He's trying to get acopy events get one, you get one,
you get one. But you didwell done. But that's what we're
talking about. Then, and thenyou heard like the prior person I didn't
(01:27):
I didn't catch his name, butit kind of the message ran out,
So it's going to cut you offat thirty seconds, so probably fifteen twenty
seconds, twenty five something like thatis enough to let us know. But
he did. He let us know. He said, like the cover stories,
the features Texas going into the SEC. What does that mean? There
(01:48):
are some new things we pointed outwhen we had Greg tepper on. One
of the things we thought was reallycool because we're kind of nerdy like this,
is that in say, for example, there's six a preview of their
top and for those of you watchingon YouTube, you see what I'm pointing
to here, they have like theirtop fifty and they have the logos of
all the schools. Because we're goofythat way, you know, But that's
(02:12):
pretty cool, and they do itin they do that in the other category,
the other classifications as well. Butremember from five A all the way
down through one A, they alreadyhave it broken down into divisions, division
one, division two. They dothat in advance. So if you're the
top twenty five in five AD onein A, top twenty five and five
AD two, and they do thesame thing for four A, three A,
(02:35):
two A, and one A whichis the six man classification as well.
So that's that's an example what we'retalking about. But anyway, while
we have some available, and wedo have a few more copies available,
go ahead and do that. Availyourself of the iHeartRadio app and the talkback
feature. And if you do thatand tell us what it is you like
(02:57):
or look forward to reading in theannual edition at Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine,
then you get a copy. That'sthat's how it works. So we'll
do that. Okay, yesterday,Kim, you had pulled up a story.
We really didn't get into it much, but I was kind of curious
to get your thoughts. And thiswas the story because it had been much
(03:21):
balllyhoed. For some time, itlooked for all the world, and it
may still be the case, butit looked for all the world as though
TNT's time with the NBA was done, the contract was expiring, and the
NBA was going in a different direction, and that they were not going to
be reupping in all this stuff. And then the NBA had opened up for
(03:44):
bids and it looked like Amazon wasprobably going to be the key player involved
there, And all of that maystill be the case. However, the
story you pulled up yesterday said thatWarner Brothers, the parent company there,
had had agreed to match because theyhave right of first refusal on the match
to match the offer that was putup there, and that they had indeed
(04:10):
matched. Now, I'll let Camgo down the road on that. But
the reason why I bring this up, I don't know if you saw this
story today. Karon Ernie Johnson, who is such a lynch pin you know
in their coverage on you know,on TNT's NBA coverage. Also, as
(04:30):
we know about Ernie, he's alynch pin with their Major League Baseball coverage
during the year, and he callsplay by play of one of those wild
Card Series. Well, Ernie Johnsonis going to step away from MLB on
TBS hosting duties for the rest ofthis season and it and he's going to
be replaced by Greg m Singer orarm Singer from MLB is going to replace
(04:59):
him. Arnie, as we know, you may be familiar with the story
has had about with cancer in thepast, but this apparently has nothing to
do with that, says it's allowinghim to take time off to tend to
a family matter. Whether that isor not, I don't know. Anyway,
his quote was, I'd like tothank the leadership of TNT Sports for
allowing me the time away to takecare of a family matter during the baseball
(05:25):
season. Now listen to this quote. I look forward to returning to the
studio for the start of the NBAseason end quote. Of course, you
know we've been hosting Inside the NBA, working with Kenny Spitt, Charles Barkley,
Shaquille O'Neill, Emmy Award winning show. But in the last four years
(05:46):
he's been the host of all ofTBS studio coverage for their weekly national broadcast
as well as the TBS postseason coverage. And so there it is So it's
a twofold thing here, the factthat he's stepping away from their baseball coverage.
And I will say this TBS fordoing a game of the Week and
(06:08):
one of the divisions or a coupleof divisions. Heeries, they do a
good job. You know, theybring in Bob Costas for a while,
have him step in and do that. You know, Brian Anderson, I
think does a fabulous job. Ourold friend from Georgetown. I think he
does a great job. But he'sdoing it. So there's that. But
then there's that other quote, Ilook forward to returning to the studio for
(06:30):
the start of the NBA season. So what does that mean that between that
and what Warner said yesterday? SoI mean you have the story right about
them agreeing to match. I guesswhatever offers out there. Yeah, So
the NBA's TV media deal rights wereup, and ESPN and Warner Brothers,
(06:51):
who owns TNT, obviously that thispass media deal where the two big ones,
with the NBA Finals airing on ESPNa lot alongside of conference finals,
TNT getting a Conference finals along withtwo games per week, and obviously the
Inside the NBA Show, which featuresErnie Johnson and Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith's
(07:12):
to kill O'Neil and at sometimes forsome reason, Draymond Green And that's a
whole different conversation. But with thenew media deal, NBA had agreed to
a deal with the ESPN, andit's basically split up into three tiers.
You have the Tier A packagehich isthe ESPN which is paying for the conference
finals, the NBA Finals, themost games. Tier B, which is
what NBC agreed to NBC back backinto the basketball business, which will have
(07:39):
exclusive regular season games including on Peacockas well broadcasts on Tuesday nights and Sundays.
They're going to have the All StarGame for the NBA and also playoff
games. The third tier was AmazonPrime, same thing with certain regular season
games in certain nights. Basically, the NBA is going to have a primetime
(08:01):
game every single night of the weekon ESPN, Amazon or NBC. So
TNT worned by brother Warner Brothers, had not agreed to a deal, but
they did have back in right,so they decided to match the deal of
Amazon. So not the ESPN orthe NBA NBC deal, but Amazon's deal
which is eleven years and I believeone point eight billion dollars per years to
(08:24):
contract. Now they match this, but the NBA gets to decide which contract
they want to go to. Andit seems like a big reason why the
NBA is trying to move with Amazonis because, well, Amazon, you
know, there's a lot of moneyand they are guaranteeing a certain amount of
that contract upfront, whereas Warner Brothershas to go to creditors to get a
(08:46):
credit line to help pay for guaranteedmoney up front. And it seems like
if the NBA decides to favor Amazon'scontract, it's going to lead into a
lot of lawsuits, countersuitments, Andwhat likely I think could happen is they
might agree that some sort of dealwhere Amazon still gets their contract, but
(09:07):
TNT might get maybe a game ortwo a week perhaps, or they get
access to being able to bring backthe Inside the NBA show with Ernie Johnson
in Jack. I mean, intheir official statement from Warner Brothers, they
said, we look forward. Welook forward to having the NBA back on
our network. Ernie Johnson statement too. So it sounds like, you know,
(09:28):
this could just be all the fronting, but it sounds like they are
very confident in getting in getting NBAbasketball back on their network. But we'll
see. I mean, it seemskind of just like the lawsuits between the
ACC and Clemson and Florida State. It seems like I could go in this
type of direction. It's funny youbring that up because they're gonna say,
I'm gonna roll it back to ourconversation of an hour ago about the ACC
(09:54):
and Jim Phillips, the Atlantic CoastConference Commissioner, saying, what good is
a contract if you don't of thecontract. Well, in that contract,
according to what you read there,TNT Warner would have the right to match
and therefore retain their portion of thatat least that tier, that third tier
(10:18):
of it. It doesn't sound likeWarner tn T is matching ESPN's No,
they're not. So there's they're they'renot matching that. They're not mentioning,
not matching NBC. They're only matchingAmazon's deal. Okay, so let's let's
examine that for a moment. Let'sjust say that the NBA says, okay,
yep, okay, you matched. You get to hold on to it,
because apparently that's how the a lotof the contracts work. You have
(10:41):
a right to match, a rightof first refusal, a right to match
it and therefore retained. Otherwise, what's the point putting it in there?
And the funny thing is, Craig, is that the next contracts with ESPN,
NBC in Amazon, they don't includeback in right. So the NBA
is switching up on that and probablylearning from their stake with Warner Brothers.
Okay, So it also sounds likethe NBA was taken by surprise that they
(11:05):
did not expect Warner Brothers to matchbecause they've been dragging their feet on this
for a long time. Yeah,so it sounds like that. But I
think you're exactly right if if Warnerindeed says we're matching, and it doesn't
matter whether you've got to get aline of credit or whatever. If they
(11:26):
say they're matching and the upfront moneyis there, whether you have to borrow
it or whether you write the checkyourself or you break into your piggy bank
or however you do it, ifyou're matching on the money, it would
seem to me that the contract wouldsay you get to hold on all the
rights. Nothing against Amazon. I'man Amazon subscriber, I have Amazon,
but I also have TNT. I'vegot Peacock by the way too, So
(11:50):
you know, it's that sounds strangethat the NBA's responses is what's kind of
sounding strange, TN T. Warner. It sounds there, like you said,
they sound very convinced and confident thatthey'll be retaining what they have,
or at least the third tier ofit. Anyway, of course, if
(12:11):
you got the third tier and yououtline the third tier, the third tier
does not include any of the realsexy items, right, I mean,
it does have some playoffs, ithas no conference finals, does obviously doesn't
have the NBA Finals, and itdoesn't have the All Star Game, which
tn t's had for a long longtime. So for the next eleven years,
(12:35):
the NBA's agreement with Amazon, inwhich Warner Brothers matched, calls for
six conference finals, So six conferencefinals, conference finals out of the eleven
years full playoffs late don't know thenumber of games, but also the n
Season tournament, and then Thursday NightBasketball after Amazon concludes its Thursday Night Football
(12:56):
responsibilities. Now, if they matchedthis, can T and T be able
to do all of them? That'sthe question. The NBA wanted to announce
this new deal. From what Iunderstand, before the Olympics begins on Friday.
This was matched yesterday, which kindof seems like it's not quin thintle
that Warner Brothers is doing this rightnow on purpose, and I'm sure it's
(13:18):
pissing off a lot of people, including Adam Silver in the NBA, because
again, they do have the rightto match. And if the NBA decides
to go with Amazon, because Imean, who knows with Warner Brothers,
and we've seen this kind of withDisney and all the money these companies,
these media companies are losing, right, and they have to get bailed out
(13:39):
and they go bankrupt or turn theprivate equity. I think the NBA looks
at Amazon's business model and I thinkwe all agree Amazon's not going anywhere,
right, and they trust a lotmore trust Amazon a lot more than Warner
Brothers, because Warner Brothers in orderto be able to provide some of this
guaranteed money upfront reportedly that Amazon isdoing, They're going, they're getting they're
(14:01):
getting help, they're getting helped.Amazon already has it, so we'll see.
You know, I don't know allthe answers here obviously, but it
does look like that if they doturn the Amazon, it's going to turn
into a nasty lawsuit one way oranother. But if you are a huge
fan of Inside the NBA, andI think it's probably one of the best,
one of the best sports shows thatyou can find anywhere at any time
(14:22):
on any sport right there with collegegame, that it is a good sign
that maybe maybe some way, somehowthey'll still stay alive and it might just
be separate. They might have anybasketball games, but they still might be
able to air this show. Allright. I just want to make sure
I heard you right. Did yousay the Tier three that would go to
Amazon would include conference finals, notjust playoffs? Conference finals in six of
(14:43):
eleven years. M hm, that'sgoing to go over. You saw the
blowback just for that one playoff gamebetween the Chiefs and the Dolphins on Amazon,
you know, actually fence finals. So Amazon's package is Tier B.
Nb CE is Tier three, Tierthree with regular season games exclusively on Peacock
(15:05):
on Monday nights, uh NBC Primetimebroadcast on Tuesday and Sundays, the All
Star Game, a full slate ofplayoff games. Well actually, and they're
also going to have six conference finals. Who is so NBC, so they're
they're paying two point five billion perseason. Amazon is paying one point eight
billion. So actually, maybe Iwas wrong. Maybe I was right and
(15:26):
then was wrong the second time. This might be considered tier by ESPN.
Has he's seeing the most reg gamesand they're getting the NBA Finals, so
that that constitute as a tier Apackage and they're paying if I can find
it, they're paying. ESPN ispaying two point seven billion dollars and they're
going to get they're going to getone of the conference finals every year,
Yes, every single year, Sothey're getting the the Western Conference finals every
(15:52):
every season. Then it seems likeNBC and Amazon would theoretically be switching off
every single year. Okay, allright, T and T may not like
that, Yeah, exactly. Okay. And by the way, which what
did she ever? Tier has then Season Tournament? You mentioned the worst
tear. I'm sure some folks wouldagree with me. Maybe someone I could
care the south end of a ratabout the n Season Tournament. It's it's
(16:18):
just almost worthless too, right therewith you? Yeah? All right?
