Welcome back to the Craig Way Showand the Voice of the Longhorns. Craig
What follow Craig on social media atHorn Voice Onward. We move here on
a Thursday afternoon. Hey, programmingnote for you. I'm gonna be out
(00:25):
tomorrow and Cam will be joined byandrews Immo for the program tomorrow. Here's
the reason why I'm out tomorrow.I can honestly say this is the first
time this has ever happened in mylife, and I'm kind of excited about
it. I have an eight yearold grandson, THEO. THEO Theodore James
(00:55):
Carrol was by THEO. He wasnamed by the Way for a a veteran
who was killed in Afghanistan. Myson in law was in the army and
was serving in Afghanistan as a medicand when a rocket attack landed in their
(01:18):
compound into their area and it explodedup one a house or whatever or a
shed, and my son in lawwas trying to save the life of his
good friend THEO when a second shellstruck a storage shed and it broke my
(01:44):
son's collar bone and put a lotof shrapping on his back and things like
that, and so he had tobe airlifted out of there, underwent surgery
and recovered recovered from it, buthe lost a close friend, THEO,
and he he has kept in touchwith Theo's family. His mom has been
(02:07):
up to visit up there. Ibelieve they are in Rochester, New York,
something like that. But he namedhis first child after his close friend
who he lost there in Afghanistan. And so Theodore James Carol is my first
grandchild, my oldest one. Ihave four grandkids. THEO is eight,
(02:28):
Gideon, who is developing into quitethe baseball player, is six. Then
two girls, Norah Gideon Charles hissix years on. Norah Beth as four,
and Ruthie May. Ruthie is theyoungest, she's three. So two
grandsons, two granddaughters. The oldest, THEO is like most or like a
(02:54):
lot of little boys his age, interested in things like dinosaurs and al I
took a nalligator adventure at Myrtle Beachon vacation. He's interested in action adventure
things. But one other thing hegot interested in was swimming. I thought,
okay, oh, that's funny. He did all all four of my
grandkids, even the three year oldcan all swim now. And I grew
(03:16):
up on a lake in North Carolina. I grew up even before that was
little. We get a neighborhood swimmingpool. Uh, and so we were.
We were all swimmers. We alllearned that swim. But THEO has
passed all of us. And he'seight. He started swimming competitively and about
(03:36):
three weeks ago qualified under the TexasAmateur Athletic Federation the t a a F.
He qualified for their state championships infreestyle and in freestyle relay. How
about that? Yeah, shots thoughtit was great. In fact, my
daughter Hayley, my son little Tylersaid they were probably the most shocked because
(04:00):
he shaved four seconds off his timein winning the regional meet. And what
was the motivation? Well before themeet, my son in law asked him,
you're ready to go? You're readyto go? He said. He
said, I like the smell ofthat popcorn. I'd really like some popcorns.
He was like your typical eight yearold, of course, and my
son in law said, well, swim, Well, you know, do
(04:20):
you go in to have a goodgo in there and Jim, we'll get
some popcorn afterwards. Motivated by that, he swims the best time in his
region, wins his individual freestyle event, and then his freestyle team also qualified,
so he is involved in the statechampionships. He got his back of
popcorn by the way afterwards. Goodyeah too. Yeah. So THEO has
(04:44):
qualified for the TAAF State swimming Championshipsat age eight in his age group.
I should point out it's not likehe's beyond that. He's he's in his
age group, but he's uh.He swims early Saturday morning at the state
(05:05):
meet in Brownsville, go all theway down to the valley. So anyway,
I'm going to be traveling down tothe valley. Lyndon and I will
be traveling now, but we wantto watch see my grandson swim at the
state meet, so that'll be there, and so I'll I'll be out traveling
(05:26):
down to the valley to see THEOswim in the t AAF statewide swim meet.
So good luck that THEO will seeall that goes. But I'll be
out tomorrow. But Cameron and andand Andrews Himma will be here for the
program. Will Dak Prescott be withthe Cowboys for more than one more season?
Will Michael Parsons be with the DallasCowboys for one more season. Jerry
(05:53):
Jones was asked these and many otherquestions over which he was quite ambiguous,
especially when he continued to use theword ambiguity a lot during the press conference.
We heard him say a little bitabout when he said he did not
believe that Dak would only be withthe Cowboys just one more season, But
he did have some other things totalk about with regard to that sort of
(06:15):
situation here. I'm all in.I'm all in. Sometimes being all in
means you narrow you remove the monthsout here that are in the future,
(06:36):
and you narrow it down to whereall we're talking about is right now in
the next playoff season. And that'sit for everybody. We're all in.
We're all in. It's all rightthere. That's okay. We all got
some things out here in the future, another two of three years on contracts,
(06:59):
all that stuff. Let's all getin here zero right now in this.
Dak's got his year contract. Let'sfocus right here. We all got
a lot on the line for thatplayoff gain a lot of it. So
you've got to understand a weird wayof looking at it a little bit.
(07:19):
With that time Okay, I listen. It's not often I say this,
but I'm going to say it rightnow. I understand Jerry in that particular
piece of sound. I understand whathe's saying, you know. I understand
also how it's become frustrating for longsuffering and long time Cowboy fans like yourself,
(07:46):
Cameron, to hear him say,and he said it a lot last
year, and he has said itin the off season. We just started
to say it again. I'm allin. I'm on in. Well,
the the the all in thing meansdifferent things. For a Cowboy fan like
(08:07):
yourself and like many others, allin means are you truly all in in
terms of using all your resources toput together a team that has a real,
real shot to contend for an NFCchampionship, go to Super Bowl?
Would that? Would I be correct? And Saints? Okay? I think
(08:30):
what Jerry is telling us is hewants all in from his coaches and his
players to be fully focused and committedon twenty twenty four and being the best
thing can be and possibly getting toSuper Bowl and all that other kind of
stuff, and that he and maybethis is having blinders on it. He's
not looking beyond it. He's lookingat twenty twenty four. That's what I
(08:54):
mean about all in. I wanteverybody dialed in and focused and things like
that. Here's the problem with that, And I understand what he's saying,
and on some levels I agree withit. You got to know where you
are in the moment. Live inthe moment. I'll get greater. Used
to always talk about that, don'tworry about the future. But in the
world of pro sports, you arealways dealing with the future. You are
(09:16):
always, sometimes some way somewhat leveragingthe past and the future on what you
have. And by past, i'mtalking about draft picks that may or may
not be working out, and youhave to figure out whether or not to
get rid of them. And inthe future, obviously, if we want
to keep certain people on your roster. But more's the point, if you
(09:39):
want sometimes and this is just theway it is in pro sports, more
so, certainly, I think, than in collegiate sports. If you want
your highly paid players to perform wellin the present, you have to make
sure that they're not so preoccupied withthe future. Uh. And the future
(10:01):
for Dak Prescott is beyond the DallasCowboys if it's one more year. We
heard Jerry earlier talk about, youknow, sometimes you don't get everything that
you want. What was it youread a quote what through social media where
Dak Prescott was talking about sometimes quarterbacksor quarterbacks wind up paying for more than
one team, something like that. Some great quarterbacks have played for other teams
(10:22):
in their career, Tom Brady,Joe Montana, Aaron Rodgers, Yeah,
Peyton Manning, Peyton Manning. Imean you can go back Joe Nama,
Johnnyannidas, a lot of those, but most of those were on the tail
end of their career. Uanidas wasNamath was Montana was even Brady was on
the back side of the career.Who know, we won another Super Bowl.
(10:45):
Well, Dak is supposedly, ifnot completely in his prime, maybe
just a little bit, just crestingthe top of the hill. Am I
right? Yeah, I would saythis would be an unprecedented move to see
a quarterback like this of his caliberhit the free agency market without a major
(11:07):
without coming off a major injury.I think about Drew Brees, but remember
he had all his injury concerns andat that point the Chargers their their medical
staff. I mean, of course, they have a very notorious medical staff
there in San Diego. They wereout on Drew Brees because of his medical
history. Nor Land takes a chanceon him, ends up winning a super
Bowl. So that's the only kindof similar situation. I can see this
(11:28):
too, because it's not like he'sthirty eight thirty nine years old like Tom
Brady or Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgerswhen they switched teams. He's only going
to be thirty one, thirty twoyears old. And so far another one.
Yeah, and Brett Farv I meanat that point, I think Green
Bay, you know, they knewthey had Rogers behind him and waiting,
they knew what they had. Ithink they were tired of Brett Farr behind
the scenes. It does not seemlike the Cowboys are tired of Dak Prescott
(11:52):
behind the scenes, because he's agreat guy. This is all about money,
all right. Did we have anotherpiece of sound from Jerry about all
this? I have one from StephenJones in regards to the CD lamb in
Michael Parsons contracts. Let's hear thatone. This is Stephen Jones who really
probably is doing a lot of theheavy lifting on all of this as we
know, even though Jerry ultimately hasto sign off on everything, but this
(12:13):
is Stephen Jones, Jerry so thevice president of the team, about where
things are with CD Lamb and MichaelParsons, among others. We have a
very unique situation. We have aquarterback who played at the top of his
game last year's second MVP voting whocan leave, and then we've got two
players who can't leave here for threeyears. Theoretically, if we didn't sign
(12:37):
either one, I guess we couldn'tfranchise one three years from now, but
we could sign one of them, and both of them rightfully so believe they
should be the highest paid nine quarterbackin the league and totally respect that.
So very difficult situations that we're tryingto work through with them. They want
(12:58):
to win, they want to puta ring on their finger, and they
understand the difficult situation we have withthe high priced quarterback going into his second
high priced contract. He was thehighest paid when we paid him three years
ago. And then we got twoother guys that we're trying to work through.
It just takes time, and we'rehaving great conversations with the representatives in
(13:22):
terms of CD in back, andobviously Mike is a year removed from where
CD is today. You know CD, you know in his career and where
he is contractually. So I thinkhe wants to go out and show that
he is the best nine quarterback inthe league, and I hope he does
it. But these things just taketime, and we're having great conversations with
(13:46):
him. It's certainly not easy.I welcome the opportunity that we've drafted well
enough to have one of the bestquarterbacks in the league, one of the
best pass rushers in the league,if not the best, and one of
the best receivers, if not thebest, in the league. Welcome the
opportunity. It's great that we draftlike that, but it does take time
(14:07):
and it's certainly not easy. Youknow, you look at a guy like
Jefferson. They're not paying a quarterback, They're not paying anybody on their roster
at this point, so it's alot easier for them to stretch a little
more. And we're just trying towork through reasonably with CD, reasonably with
Dak what we can do to makeit work from an economic standpoint, and
(14:30):
certainly when you're trying to pay threeguys like that. It certainly does limit
your opportunities to maybe improve the rosterdown the line. All right, So
there's Stephen Jones about and he makesa point. I mean, the Vikings
can give Justin Jefferson that kind ofcontract because they're not paying that kind of
(14:50):
money right now to their quarterback position. But still in all those guys are
going to demand a lot of money. So that's the delicate situation they're dealing
with, all right. Coming upnext, we shift back to baseball.
Jean Watson, the Chicago White Soxfront office, joins us live from Globe
Lightfield in Arlington, where the Rangersjust finish off their sweep of the White
