Hour 2 continues with audio from Jerry Jones at the Dallas Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, CA. Jerry was asked if it's more likely than a deal does not get done with the star quarterback and his response is telling, especially when compared to what Kyle Shanahan said about Brock Purdy earlier this week...

(00:00):
Doctor Little Texas Football. In thefirst hour, Let's talk some Dallas Cowboys
NFL training camp beginning this week, and no doubt Cowboys fans understand how big
of a year it is for MikeMcCarthy, entering his final season of a
contract with the Cowboys, coming offa very disappointing first round exit in last

(00:23):
year's playoff, getting humiliated by JordanLove in the Green Bay Packers, another
disappointing end to the season for Dallas. So they enter this year a lot
of question marks, including Dak Prescottentering the last year of his deal after
Dallas gave him a franchise tag beforeand now looking into this next season,

(00:49):
will Dak Prescott be a Dallas Cowboy? And it seems more and more likely
that he won't be. Jerry wasasked about this in his press conference.
Yeahsterday, we played it for youon the show. I'm gonna play play
it for you again because I thinkhis answer here is very telling on his

(01:11):
thoughts on whether or not this couldbe Dak Prescott's the final season with the
Dallas Cowboys. I don't think so. Just to be very specific, I
do not think that this will behis last year with the Cowboys at all
the the is there? Am Ibeing psychi psychotic relative to Mamera? No,

(01:40):
No, it's pretty clear. Ithink I want to say it if
it hadn't been clear of how muchwe appreciate what Dak Prescott has meant to
this team in a positive way,and the players do play better when he's
out there. He does make histeammates play at a higher level. There's
no question about it. So I'mright there in line with his best fan.

(02:05):
But believe it or not, inmy life, I've had a lot
of things I wanted that I couldn'tget because I couldn't afford it. Now
have I learned to live with that? In eighty something years. You better
have And life does go on.And sometimes when you get a bump like

(02:28):
that, you turn around and dobetter than you would have had you got
what you wanted, if you'd havenever known it, had you not had
to go get there. There's beensome of my life with the Dollars Cowboys
that that's reflected that had I gottenwhat I was sick about and ready to
jump that I didn't get, hadI gotten it, it wouldn't have turned

(02:50):
out as positive as it's turned outso much of this thing we do,
specifically with putting rosters together, whenyou're dealing with availability injury, when you're
dealing with talent fluctuations, when you'redealing with the competitiveness, so much of

(03:14):
it creates a level where you justgot to go and see what happens.
Now, that's not unique. Millionsof your readers and your fans that you
communicate with, millions of them livethat every day. There's nothing new about
a human being having to live withambiguity. Nothing new about that. We

(03:36):
all doing well. It's alive andwell and what we deal with and what
I'm dealing with every day. Again, it's privileged to be here dealing with
it. Now. This is thesmallest violent But what the point I'm trying
to make is there is nothing newabout not having these questions answered that you
reflect, and we've reflected in thisoff season, and yet have gone in

(04:00):
with not my wish list for acompleted and I've been apart with the Cowboys
and been a part of it inthe other parts of my life ended up
being the best I ever did.Okay, So he starts off the quote
saying I don't think it's going tobe Dak Prescott's last year. That's the
headline. But if you go intofurther it's interesting. He says, there's

(04:26):
a lot of things I haven't gottenin my life because I couldn't afford it.
Direct quote from Jerry Jones to me, it sounds like this front office
has already embraced a possibility that DakPrescott is not going to be a quarterback
beyond this next season. They justcannot afford it. Now, we just

(04:47):
saw what Tua got fifty three pointone million dollars per year, the second
highest per our, second highest annualamount for quarterback behind Joe Burr and Trevor
Lawrence at fifty five million dollars. So if Dak does get that sixty to
sixty five, well, how muchreally is that in terms of the salary

(05:12):
cap here? Because when you justhear the number sixty to sixty five Andrew,
you think that's ridiculous. Why wouldyou ever give Dak Prescott that amount
of money? But what people forgetis a salary cap is increasing every single
year. Twenty five two hundred andfifty five million dollars the salary cap this
season this season, but every year, it's been going up incrementally by about

(05:34):
twelve percent, So that means nextseason salary cap could be about two hundred
and eighty six million dollars total. Now, all of a sudden, sixty
to sixty five million dollars is notthat big when you factor in how much
the cap is going up every singleyear, Andrew, So my point here

(05:54):
is, because you have no quarterbackplan, don't even bring up Trey Lance.
You have no quarterback plan right now, why not just go ahead and
pay him because at least you knowyou have a quarterback. And to say
you can't afford it, that isjust pure bologny from Jerry Jones. I
went through it CAM, and Ilooked at the most annoying owners in my

(06:14):
life. George Steibbrenner Yankees owner elevenchampionships, right or seven championships? I
should say, Jerry Buss won tenwith the Lakers. Jerry Jones three Super
Bowls, and he's by far themost annoying owner in professional sports. I
don't know if you could smell inthe studio CAM in Austin, I could
smell it down here in San Antonio, because that's garbage. He is full

(06:38):
of garbage that's stunk. It's fourpercent of the cap. I understand,
you know, sixty million dollars notnothing to turn your nose up at.
But I agree with you. Ifyou want to compete, you have to
pay your quarterback. And to me, Cam what this tells me is that
Jerry Jones does not believe in MikeMcCarthy. He doesn't believe in Dak Prescott,

(06:58):
doesn't believe in Ceedee Lamb, doesn'tbelieve in Michael Parsons. At that
point, just get rid of everybody. Just get rid of it. Trade
everybody or better yet, I thinkCowboys fans would feel better sell the team.
If you don't think that they're gonnawin, and you don't think you
were the right guy to own theteam, sell the team, because that's
really what it comes down to,I think, and not extending Mike McCarthy

(07:20):
shows you. It's it's weird, the dichotomy of it, because everyone thought
that McCarthy was done after that GreenBay loss, not only because of the
expectations of how well the Cowboys hadplayed that entire season, but to give
the gut, they have a homeplayoff game against your old team and they're
just getting embarrassed like that on anational stage by by Jordan Love who thought

(07:44):
McCarthy was coming back. I certainlydidn't, And and Jerry decided to stay
with him. He didn't give himan extension, thank goodness, didn't give
an extension. But how can yousay you're all in by these moves?
And I know we keep repeating thesame thing over and over again, but
why even keep him as your head? And what are you doing here with

(08:05):
Dak and c D and Micah ifyou're saying you all in and you're not
paying them and you're you have ahead coach who is basically a lame duck
this season. And to me,Cam too, you're playing chicken with the
other thirty one owners because the bestcoach of all time is on the market,
like Bill Belichick is right there. And I know people maybe don't feel
the same way they feel about Belichicknow than they did like in twenty sixteen,

(08:28):
but he's still by far the bestavailable coach, and in fact,
the Cowboys haven't even like I understand, Mike Zimmer is a good defensive portinator.
I liked him as the head coachof the Vikings, but come on,
you didn't even give him like aphone call to be a part of
the staff. Right. You didn'teven bring Bill Belichick in as like a
special assistant. No call. KyleShanahan had said, Hey, I offered

(08:48):
him any job you wanted on thestaff. Turned it down. Okay,
I understand that. Did you thinkJerry Jones pick up the phone cam?
I don't think so. This isthe worst. This is worse than not
putting a team on the field. This is putting a mediocre team on the
field. This is putting a whataid and seven, eight to nine team
on the field, camp a teamthat's gonna middle a best Dak's gonna leave

(09:11):
for nothing, and then what youbetter, Holpe, the Cowboys trade up
for Quinn Yeers. That's all Igotta say. So, we're seeing with
the Cowboys how they feel about thecapituation and shying away from not paying Dak,
and you know, who knows, maybe next week a deal gets done
and Dak does get the fifty fiveor sixty million dollars. But obviously,
the way they think about the quarterbackpositions a lot different than what these other

(09:33):
teams think about Miami, Detroit,Jacksonville. I mean Trevor Lawrence s has
not. He's you can argue he'sone of the same amount of things that
Dak Prescott has, and yet Lawren'sgetting a huge contract now. Kyle Shanahan
went on the Tim Cawacomie podcast thispast week and he was asked about the
cap in brock Perriy's contract. There'sa chance that brock Perry is gonna get

(09:58):
paid sixty five million dollars in thisnext extension, and so you know,
Shanahan was asked about dealing with thatcontract as a head coach and all that
comes with it, and Shanahan's responsewas interesting. Here he says, I
think because of where the market's gonewith a quarterback position, it's just the
dollars. I guess that's kind ofcrazy, those numbers. It's kind of

(10:20):
like when we look at real estateout here in California and how much cost
houses count, how much houses cost. I don't believe it at first.
It's just there's so much. Andthen when you got there and as long
as you can resell and stuff,it's all relative, so it's whatever.
But the numbers overwhelm you. SoI get that. But as a coaching
standpoint. I think, obviously howyou fit into a salary cap where it

(10:41):
is going, But I don't getcaught up and how much money that is.
I get caught up on. Well, that's how much a starting quarterback
costs. Within the rum of it. I mean, it is what it
is. But this is the markon how much a starting quarterback cost.
Are you happy with someone as yourstarting quarterback? If you are? Are
you happy with the as a rookie? Are you happy with them on a
rookie contract? Great? Are youhappy with them when you got to pay

(11:05):
them? Well? How do youcompare them to everyone else? Rock Party
is a starting quarterback in this league? What does that cost? And you
look at it? And that's kindof where I keep it. So if
you're the Cowboys and Jerry Jones, what do you see Dak Prescott as And
I think Shanahan's smart and just realizing, hey, this is how much a
quarterback is going to cost you. Now, it doesn't matter if you have

(11:28):
three Super Bowl rings or if youhave zero. It's just how much the
starting quarterback cost. And that's probablywhy Party is going to get paid here
for San Francisco. It shows mejust how much Dallas is not prepared for
this because they do not realize thatone. Jenahan's right, that's just how
much the quarterback costs. I don'tcare if it's Romo, if it's Zach
Prescott or whoever. That's just howmuch the quarterback cost. Now, fifty

(11:50):
to sixty million dollars is how muchis going to cost. Dallas is not
prepared for that, and that's veryscary as a fan that realized that they're
still caught up. And I thinkin this old thinking and not realizing that
the salary cap is going to goup every single year. In sixty million
dollars is not that much when youcompare it to how much percentage it is

(12:11):
of the cap. That's my thoughtson this Dak Prescott situation, and it
sounds like he will not be astarting quarterback for Dallas next season. Of
course, a lot of things canchange, but the way that this front
office is operating, they are behindin the times they are going to get
played. They're going to let DakPrescott become a free agent on the open
market, which is unprecedented in thisNFL era, and they are going to

(12:31):
lose Dak Prescott because a team outthere will be willing to pay Dak Prescott
what he commands on the open market. We'll get the more cowboy stuff here
up next year as the Craig WaveShow continues on this fire me Up Friday,
