Speaker 1 (00:14):
Standard message and data rates may apply. The final score
Team USA the women's basketball team, winning its Olympic opener
handily over Japan one oh two to seventy six. Asia
Wilson and as I mentioned a Brianna Stewart were the

(00:36):
one to two punch. Really. Wilson twenty four points, thirteen
rebounds and four block shots, Stewie twenty two points, eight boards,
three assists and three blocks in the game. So it
was the size really coming in in the US never
really challenged. They were up seven at the end of
the first quarter eleven and a half, doubled that in

(00:58):
the third quarter. Third quarter when they really put their
foot on the gas and outscored Japan by eleven in
the quarter to lead by twenty two going in the
final frame, and then outscored by four in the final period.
So they win one two to seventy six, winning their
Olympic opener. So no problem at all for Team USA
and they will go on and get ready for their

(01:21):
next matchup and in group play before and another win
would get them into the quarterfinals. And again they're you know,
planning to their their their favored, heavily favorite to win
an eighth consecutive gold medal. We come off a baseball weekend,

(01:46):
rough weekend for the Rangers, got swept by the Blue Jays,
and it begs the question, now, Cameron Parker, are they
sellers now? They went ahead and and and made a
deal over the weekend with the Royals or yesterday I
guess it was. So are the Rangers giving up on

(02:11):
it even though they're still in the wild card race?
And what I mentioned is that, uh, you know a
lot of these are going to go right down to
the wire for teams to get into the playoffs as
a wild card, even because of the races. But the

(02:31):
Rangers did trade right handed pitcher Michael Lorenzen to the Royals.
They received left handed waller Pennington in exchange for the
Wrens and he's five and six the three So Lorenzen
is going to be an unrestricted free agent the end
of the year. So the question is is this waving
the white flag or do they think it can help
him and just wanting to get something for him before

(02:52):
he leaves in free agency at the end of the year.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
Well, they traded for Carson Keilly, the Tigers catchers, so
that's that's a buying move there to the shore up
the cutri spot because Joonaheim is not having a great
season at all. And then Lorenzo, you know, he was
kind of signed to kind of fill in as a
starting pitcher while the Rangers were waiting to get back
Scherzer in the Gram and Molly, and it seems like
with those guys coming back, this is more of a

(03:18):
move that, hey, we don't really have a spot for
you in a rotation. He hasn't pitched well in his
last couple of games. Let's go ahead and move him.
Give for something. And they got back a triple A
bullpen prospect to who might be able to help them
down the line. But I think there's still buyers here.
You know, the series against Toronto, I know they swipped

(03:39):
the White Sox, but let's let's be real, it's the
White Sox or White Sox. We're fifty two below five hundred.
You can't really learn a whole lot about your team
from that. And just a really disappointing series in Toronto
and it just seems like it's gonna take an act
of God for Texas to kind of get their get
their butt together and make a a run for the playoffs.

(04:01):
But I wouldn't be sellers either. I think it's just
one of those years where a lot of things have
just gone wrong with injuries and the hitting has not
been there. I would caution away from trading away your
entire farm for Yandy Diaz or someone like that just
so you can maybe make a run at the playoffs.
But I mean, the core is there. It's just been

(04:22):
a very tough year injury wise, but bad.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
Series drawn off from the starting pitching.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
So you know, maybe there's some hope there with the
Gram and Molly coming back, and of course Josh Young
who made a rehab appearance for Frisco this past week.
So things are looking optimistic in terms of players returning.
But it might just be too little, too late. But
I don't think they're going to be a seller's at
this deadline.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
I think they're going to be in the race for
why And by the way, just this afternoon they activated
Josh Young good, so they're ready to bring him back.
Yesterday Lynn and I went to the Astros Dodgers nice
at Minute May Park. Yeah, we went. We had gone
down to the valley to see my eight year old grandson.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Did know Tiny Ghitt that seven hundred foot home run?

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Was that yesterday or the day before? That was? It
was Saturday? That was the four hundred and seventy three footer.
That was Saturday, right, I was thinking he did that
before they went. Well, he did hit a long one
on Saturday. He did hit one into the upper deck
on Saturday. We were watching that in a sports bar

(05:32):
because we had gone down to Brownsville to see my grandson.
It was Saturday. Yeah, in the the TAAF the Texas
State Games where they have so many different categories, and
he was a swimmer and participated both in the freestyle
and freestyle relay. Didn't win, didn't medal, but had a
good time and actually performed, gave a good account of

(05:52):
himself there. So we went down there for that. That
was Saturday morning. Then we drove up the coast to
Houston and got up there Saturday night in time to
see the Dodger bullpen blow a five to nothing lead
and they wound up losing on a walk off home
run by Alex Bregman seven to six on Saturday. They
dropped the first two games. Did it say how long

(06:14):
that o Toani home run was? We were watching it
in four to seventy three? Was that one was four
seventy three? He hit a four to seventy three at
Dodger Stadium against the Giants the other night, So I
don't know how long that one was. But he hit
one into the upper right four hundred and forty three. Yeah,
it was only forty feet less thunder than eighteen miles
per hour off the Yeah, he has thirty two home

(06:36):
runs now this year. He didn't have a big day
offensively yesterday. I think he drew a walk, scored a run,
but I don't think he got a hit. However, two
of Linda's favorite players did. James Outman, who has struggled
to stay back at the big league level, got a
home run that was the first hit of the game
by either side. It was in the fifth inning. They
both had young pitchers going earrag Getty was going for

(06:59):
the Astros and this kid, River Ryan, who was making
only a second major league start, went for the Dodgers.
He went five and two thirds innings and the bullpen
was able to hold on and they got other home runs.
Tay Oscar Hernandez, the Homer Derby champion, hit one and
Gavin Lux hit one, so they won the game. The
Dodgers won one out of the three against Houston. But

(07:21):
the Astros have kind of rejuvenated themselves now. They did
drop two of three to Oakland, but they took two
or three from the Mariners, and they took two or
three from the Dodgers. They have the Pirates coming in
the night. Paul Skins is going to pitch tonight for Pittsburgh,
coming off his first loss I think on the mound
at the Bigs. So that's going to be admit at
May Park tonight. And today, the Dodgers, the White Sox

(07:45):
and the Cardinals finished a three team, seven player trade. Unfortunately,
for those of us who are Dodger fans, this deal
did not involve Garrett Crochet, who the Dodgers, who Dodger
fans are hoping maybe they because they need help with
their starting pitching right now because the bullpen's getting worned down.
But here's the deal. The Cardinals landed Eric Fetti and

(08:12):
outfielder Tommy fam from the White Sox. The Dodgers got
Tommy Edmund who's a utility guy, and they kind of
need that because they've had uh, Miguel Rojas has been
banged up, uh and uh, and of course Bookie Bets
is still out, so they have and they also got
reliever Michael Kopek, which is good because they need some

(08:34):
help in the bullpen. The Dodgers gave up Miguel Vargas,
former infield prospect who'd been up there at the Bigs,
Alexander Albertas and geral Perez and they're all going to
the White Sox along with the player to be named
later or cash. We'll visit with Gene Watson coming up
later this week to get a review of the entire

(08:58):
trade deadline work. The Dodgers, by the way, all who
picked up a seventeen year old right hander from the
Cardinals name Oliver Gonzalez. Cardinals to get some cash from
the White Sox and either cash or a player to
be named later from the Dodgers. The Cardinals have been
kind of a surprise this year. They began the week
just one game out of the wild card spot, so

(09:19):
they've been they've been better. So there's deals still going on.
And obviously the biggest deal of the whole week was
Jazz Chisholm going from the Marlins to the Yankees, and
we'll see how that plays out as well. We'll be
back to wrap up our number two on sports Radio
AM thirteen under the Zone.
