Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is a Texan Tuesday here on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred Zone. So Gameron Parker producer rolls Out always
started out with the legendary, iconic, the immortal Stevie ray Vaughn.
Later we'll hear something from Willie Nelson, and then later
after that, still later we'll hear from the King George Strake.
So got that to look forward too as well. All right,
(00:23):
as I mentioned, we wanted to hear from Longhorn football
assistant coaches because this being reporting day and practices start tomorrow.
So Longhorn's co offensive coordinator, associate head coach, offensive line
coach Kyle Flood one of the three there. And if
you assistant coaches over there, if you are talking about
(00:44):
this particular Texas long worn team and you're talking about
the strings, right up at or near the very top
of the list is the offensive line. In fact, I
was on a couple of Nashville radio shows this morning
as a guest, and I was starting it off with
the offensive line, because the offensive line is expected to
be really, really good. Kelvin Banks obviously left tackle, and
(01:07):
you know Jake Major's at center the anchors, but they
have other guys that are back, They're a big part
of it as well. So it was a pretty simple
question to start off the presser for Kyle Flood the
media availability. How confident is he in his offensive line?
Quite is the answer.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
So we've got a lot of guys back. Olie Christian
obviously has moved on to the NFL. So this is
a rare year. I've had this situation a couple of times,
and as a coach it's always like a really enjoyable
situation to be in. When now going into my fourth
year here working with these players, the number of starts returning,
(01:46):
I think all those things raise the bar and raise expectations,
you know, to play at a really high level. And
I think like those kind of expectations are privileged. You
have to earn those expectations. I think these guys have
and I think they've got high expectations in themselves as well.
So we've got high standards in that room, you know,
(02:07):
as a position group, and you know, we're looking forward
to the next month of trying to make sure that
we do everything we need to do to get ready
for the season, not just with I think five, but
you know, I think you're really looking at more like six, seven, eight,
you know lineman contributing, you know, on a regular basis.
I know Sark has talked about this, the potential length
(02:28):
of the season and the need to build depth, and
the best way to build depth is to play. So
you know, we've got you know, seven eight offensive linemen
coming back that have have played in games, real time,
in competitive situations. And I think we do the more
we can build on that, the stronger football team and
stronger unit will be.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
Yeah, that certainly makes sense. Doesn't mean this line can't
be better and do a lot of things to be better.
So that includes red zone and short yarded situations and
coach flubbs about the improvement areas he's looking for there, I.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
Think, but practice, you know, I don't think there's any
substitute for actually doing it. As coaches, you know, we
spend the off season critiquing ourselves and being really really
critical of the situations we think we need to get
better at. Certainly, when you're when you're trying to win
football games, there's a big block of the game that
is first and second down football in the field football,
(03:24):
and that's important because that's how you advanced the ball.
But Ultimately, the really good offenses, the elite offenses are
elite situationally, and at times we're a really good situations
and other times we weren't, you know, So you know
those are things we're always looking to improvement.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
Yeah, and you know we were talking about that offensive
line with guys like Banks and Majors as the anchors.
But Peyton Connor at left guard, he's been working at center,
and DJ Campbell at right garden and Cam Williams has
come a long long way. But you know, when asked I,
does he really seem to be like a starter to him?
(04:03):
Coach Fluff was a little bit reluctant to go that far,
since Cam Williams hasn't been a starter throughout the course
of game in game out for him and for his
offensive line, I.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Don't think so. I don't look at it that way.
You know, camp comes into training camp certainly is our
starting right tackle, and we expect that he's going to.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Play really well.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
And he had the opportunity to start the Kansas State game.
But I don't think you can you can compare, you know,
one start with seasons of start the guy like Jake
Majors who's now going into his fourth year as a
full time starter. I think there's a difference that there's
a week or reason why. Experience is an advantage, and
we have a lot of confidence in camp. He's had
(04:45):
a really good offseason. He's changed his body significantly. I
think that's going to allow him really to maximize his potential.
But I think as he plays through the season and
starts to gain his own experiences, he's only going to
get better.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
Yeah, no doubt about that. And then this this whole
thing about being sixty seventy eight deep, in other words,
not just having the five up front offensive lineman, the
depth of what you have behind them, the importance of
that and what it can do for an offensive front.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Well, I think ultimately how it plays out will be earned.
I think that's important, and the players know that you
have to earn the trust of the coaching staff, you
have to earn the trust of your teammates to ultimately
get the opportunity to play before maybe a potentially a
fourth quarter where you know, maybe you have a lead
and you're able to do those things. But again, we
(05:37):
don't ever assume we're going to have those opportunities. We're
going to go into the game, expecting it to be
competitive the whole way through. But I think there's a
lot of those guys. You know, from a guy like
Malik Ago who's played force at the tight end position
a lot. You know, a guy like Connor Robertson who
had to play the Oklahoma game when Jacob hurt last year,
to Cole Hudson who started as a freshman that had
(05:59):
all season social surgery and then played last year but
wasn't a full time starter, and a guy like Nato
who's certainly coming along. And then you know where we've
really got I think a lot of competition as well
as well as at the tackle position, you know, behind
Cam and Kelvin. Ultimately, how is that going to shake out?
You know, we've been playing Molik Gogbilla tackled this offseason,
(06:19):
Trevor Goosby has made a lot of improvements. Guys like
Jayden Chapman and Andre Kojo, Brandon Baker, you know, all
those guys have improved through the offseason and now ultimately
his training camp becomes the real challenge when you're playing
just about every day against a really high level of
player on defense as well.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Yeah, so developing that depth is going to be important,
especially when you're replacing key parts. Speaking of which, if
you go to the defensive side, and here from Pete Kakowski,
the long runs defensive coordinator Peak will tell you that
if you're asking him, how do you replace guys like
Tovandre Sweat Byron Murphy on the defensive front, it's not
(07:02):
so much about replacing the players. It is about what
they brought to the party. With a number of different guys,
how do you do it?
Speaker 3 (07:11):
The coach couch your tail off and you know, the
guys who's opportunity. You know, Horises got gotta keep working
to get better. You know, the two guys are coming back.
Vernon and a C play a lot of football, and
they've gotten better, very encouraged, you know, the think from.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
A leadership standpoint and work ethic and all that.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
You know, they've done a really nice job from man
last season through spring ball and then this summer working
out and the PRPs and made the strength staff with
do a really good job with a lot of the
because you're giving me a lot of you guys new
faces from these transfers and then the young guys helping
(08:04):
those guys come along behind behind so yeah, we got
we've got good depth. You know, we got Aaron Bryant
and uh, you know Dres coming along.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
Those are guys that have been here.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
But then then if you brought in Jermaine, Lola, Tia,
Bill Norton's big bodies that are played a lot of football.
So I think our death is gonna be good. How
how productive you know they're gonna be compared to what
those two guys brought last year. We'll we'll find out.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
Yeah, well we'll find out. We'll find out more. We'll
hear more from Peak Quick Cawski, and we'll hear from
Jeff Banks coming up a little bit later on this hour.
A little bit later on this hour, but up next,
we have inconceivable I mean your way here on a
Tuesday afternoon, when we continue on sports Radio AM thirteen
under the zone of the iHeartRadio app
