Speaker 1 (00:00):
We welcome you back for our number two here on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone Craig Way joined by
the producer Cameron Parker. Glad to have you with us
up until five o'clock this afternoon. Brand new week long
worn football team back on the field practicing and Sark
will have a media availability following practice today. They did
(00:23):
have a scrimmage over the weekend. I can tell you
everybody pretty much came out largely unscathed out of that
in terms of the injury front, and things went pretty
well in the scrimmage. We'll you're more from Sark about that.
In recapping it. The AP preseason Top twenty five college
(00:49):
Football poll is out. There is very little difference between
this preseason poll and the preseason poll from the coaches.
There are sixty two AP media members who vote on
(01:12):
this poll, and I think out of the coaches poll,
and it was something like I think there's sixty three
of them. And in both cases, I think Georgia got
forty six of the first place votes and they were
the overwhelming number one choice. Ohio State got fifteen first
place ballots, they were number two. Oregon picked up one
(01:35):
first place vote. They were third. Texas is fourth. Unlike
with the coaches polled, the long Words did not get
a first place vote in the eight people, Alabama starts
off at number five, and believe it or not, so
(01:57):
here's the Crimson side preseason number five. This is the
lowest Alabama has been ranked in the preseason pull since
two thousand and nine, fifteen years, and of course that
year two thousand and nine was the year they won
their first national championship under Nick Saban was onin I'm
Gonna be Texas in the National Championship Game. So this
(02:19):
is the lowest that they have been ranked since two
thousand and nine and their number five. The rest of
the top ten ole misses number six, Notre Dame was seven,
penn State is eight. Michigan defending national champion number nine,
which by the way, is the lowest preseason ranking for
(02:40):
a defending national champion in thirteen years when Auburn was
number twenty three following the departure of Cam Newton. Florida
State runs out the top ten at number ten, followed
by Missouri at eleven, Utah is twelve, LSU thirteen, Clemson
is fourteen, Tennessee fifteen, Oklahoma is sixteen, Oklahoma State seventeen,
(03:04):
Kansas State eighteen, Miami is nineteen, Texas A and m
at number twenty. Then you have Arizona number twenty one.
Kansas is in the top twenty five for the first
time in fifteen years in the preseason Bowl since two
thousand and nine. USC is twenty third, n C State
number twenty four, and Iowa finishes in the preseason ranking
(03:29):
they commit at number twenty five, So there's not there
wasn't really a big shock there. Georgia with those forty
six first place votes fifteen hundred and thirty two total
points in the poll finished comfortably ahead of Ohio State
at fourteen hundred ninety points total and i mentioned fifteen
(03:50):
first place votes. Oregon got one first place votes and
Texas fourth. The Big ten in the SEC each have
four teams in the top ten, and so after that,
of course, with the way conference free alignment has gone,
it's now a Power four and out of Power five,
(04:11):
the PAC twelve down to just the two schools. The
Big ten now has eighteen schools, the ACC is seventeen,
and the SEC and the Big twelve each have sixteen.
So this was an unprecedented preseason poll with just four
conferences represented, SEC with nine ranked teams, Big ten is six,
(04:34):
Big twelve has five, ACC has four.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
That's it.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
That's all of them out of those powerful and then
Notre Dame of course at number seven. So there's some
other interesting notes. Washington was lost to Michigan obviously in
the National Championship game. Took an even bigger fall than
(05:04):
Michigan did after losing their head coach, with Kaitlyn de
Bor replacing the excabit in Alabama. They also lost Michael
Pennix quarterback alst a whole bunch of talent. They are
the first team in college football play since the college
football playoffs started a decade ago, to the first team
(05:25):
to reach the playoff and then be unranked in the
preseason poland next year. So some strange things with regard
to that preseason top twenty five pole.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
The biggest thing I get from this, bull Craig is
I think I see four teams on the Longhorn schedule
that are ranked in the top twenty five. But they
don't have to worry about number one Georgia or Sorry,
they don't worry about number five Alabama or number six
Ole Miss. So I think for the first year in
the SEC, have a pretty good schedule, a good advantage. Now,
of course, that could change throughout the year, and some
(06:03):
of the teams who aren't ranked may end up being ranked.
Like you kind of think Kentucky will somehow find a
way inside the top twenty five by that game. You know,
Florida could very well end up being ranked. But I
think we see that Texas has a pretty favorable schedule
for the first year in the SEC. Three teams from
the SEC ranked, and of course Michigan at number nine.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Yeah, the ranked schools who will be on the schedule
for the Loghorns Number one Georgia, then number nine Michigan,
then number sixteen Oklahoma, then number twenty Texas, A and M.
So there's the four schools that Cameron mitchig if they
(06:45):
were still in the Big twelve, let's just say for
the moment, if Texas were still in the Big twelve.
You can wake up from the nightmare in the moment.
But if they were still in the Big twelve, Texas
would be facing according to this bowl anyway, number twelve
Utah if they were coming in like they are now,
(07:06):
Number sixteen Oklahoma, number seventeen, Oklahoma State number eighteen, Kansas
State number twenty two. Kansas now that's five, but you
don't know that they would play all of those teams.
The only one you know for sure that they would
be playing would be Oklahoma because based on the rotation
of the schedule, remember they didn't even play Oklahoma State
until the Big Twelve championship game last year, So no
(07:27):
way to tell about that because the schedule would have
been working would have been different than it was a
year ago had they remained in the Big Twelve conference.
In other words, that there's a good chance he would
have played three or four perhaps ranked teams had they
stayed in the Big Twelve. So that doesn't change in
(07:47):
this regard in that they are facing four ranked teams
in this one and as far as the Big Twelve goes,
if you're wondering about you know who who the best
chance to win the Big Twelve. Utahs the highest ranked
Big twelve school at number twelve, but then you have
(08:08):
Oklahoma State at seventeen, Kansas State is eighteen, Arizona twenty one,
and Kansas twenty two. There are five Big twelve schools
ranked in the preseason top twenty five, but none higher
than number twelve. There's a bunch down lower and then
in the ACC. Notre Dame plays that partnership schedule with
(08:28):
the ACC, but they're still classified as an independence that
they don't count in that respect. So Florida State is
their highest ranked school at number ten. Clemson is fourteen,
Miami is nineteen, NC State is twenty four. So there's
(08:49):
your other ACC schools that are ranked in the top
twenty five. So the log worms are going to be tested,
no doubt, with both the non conference in the schedule,
and kickoff is nineteen days away, nineteen days until Texas
will be taking on the Colorado State Rams here in
(09:10):
a two thirty kickoff on Saturday, August thirty. First, of course,
we'll have it for you right here on sports Radio
AM thirteen under the Zone. Our coverage will begin from
Vo Boulevard down in the Winship Circle area, new location
for our long worn game day coverage to begin, and
it'll begin three hours prior to kick so it'll start
(09:31):
eleven thirty in the morning. That is correct as a
non Cameron because you're the host of the thing, right
eleven thirty in the morning.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Yes, three hours before kickoff, in two hours before the
network pregame yeph begins and I believe you may have
a part on our Longhorn game day show, you and
Roger Wallace hopefully yep, yep.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
We'll be checking in obviously from the stadium. And so
eleven thirty AM is the pregame start time for our
long WRN game day coverage from the Winship Circle area
down there along beav of Boulevard as Cameron will be
joined by Mike Hardball, Harge and Mark Henry. They are
(10:10):
your co host for the morning kickoff, so they'll join
Cam for the show and that'll be our long run
game day show for eleven thirty in the morning. That'll
go to one thirty and then the network pre games
at one thirty in the kickoff is at two thirty.
We are close enough to the start of the season
where we can you know, speak to that where you
(10:32):
know we can we can speak to that that that
we're getting that close to kickoff. We're just around the
corner from its starting and the Long Worn's got one schedule,
one scrimmage in over the weekend. They'll have another one
coming this week and then they'll have one more ramp
up week of practice prior to game week practicing and
(10:56):
when they really turn their attention to the season opening
opponent of Colorado State.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
I mean in two weeks, greg will be talking about
the week zero games Florida State, Georgia Tech Saturday. That's
exactly there any games in Ireland.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
That's the that's the Florida State, Georgia Tech. A.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
It's in doubleblin Dublin, Okay.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
Yeah, and that ain't Dublin, Texas, folks, that would be
that would be uh Dublin, Ireland. So that yeah, that's
where that'll be. And that would that's twelve days away.
So next week we'll be talking about it being a
game week for Florida State, for Georgia Tech. Also for
SMU they're they're playing their season opener on Saturday, the
(11:38):
twenty fourth. There's a handful of games on that zero
week of college football and high school football teams are
all practicing now, including the ones who had spring practice
and started a week later than the ones who did not.
So high school football teams are on the fields now
(11:59):
going full blacks. The first scrimmages Cameron Parker will take
place this Thursday and Friday. That's how close we are
that the first scrimmages, those schools that will be having
two scrimmages, first ones will start this Thursday and some
on Friday. All right, coming up, we'll get back into
(12:21):
this Olympic thing and try to sort through some of
the details of the mess around that, and just to
recap over all the Olympics. We'll continue here on sports
