Speaker 1 (00:02):
It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcaster Craig Way.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
It's a Monday here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred zone.
Glad you could join us. Appreciate that. Craig Wig joined
by the producer Cameron Parker. We'll get to the Cowboys
at the moment. You mentioned the fact that the thing
that you enjoyed most about the Cowboys Rams game yesterday
was the debut of Jordan Whittington. Is that correct?
Speaker 3 (00:40):
I would say that it was great to see the
Marvin overshowing back out there after suffering a season ending
injury of the year before, and it was you know,
it was good to see Taylor Guiton play. First round draft,
they got a Oklahoma left tackle and also Trey Land,
so they traded for a fourth round draft picked to
see him in action. So those say three four things.
(01:02):
But seeing how great Whittington played. Yes, at the.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Time, Whittington, in case you didn't here, had six catches
for seventy four yards. He also had I believe a
twenty five or thirty five yard catch that got wiped
out due to penalty as well, and his quote after
the game was I've dreamed of being here, so just
seeing my name on the back of an NFL jersey,
it was a lot. And I remember for the game
and I was praying. I was like, God, if this
(01:26):
life only exists in my dreams, don't wake me up. Great,
he said. The whole time, I was just enjoying it, man,
That's what it was about. So, yeah, it was. It
was very cool to see that. And it was a
corner route by the way, that we're gone for eighteen
(01:46):
yards to call back due to a penalty against the Rams.
Stets and minutes that he thought he thought that Whittington
played really well. Well. Wasn't that nice of Stetson to
say that, because Stetson Bennett did not play well. Four
interceptions and really could very realistically have been a fifth,
but it was wiped out due to a penalty that
(02:07):
kept the Rams drive alive. And then ultimately they get
down and he does lead the final drive and he
does throw the touchdown pass on fourth and six with
four seconds to go in the game. He did do that,
and so the Rams won the game for whatever that means,
thirteen to twelve in the game, but waitning to at
least from the Rams side, I think it was the
(02:28):
best story there. And then from the Cowboys side, what
do you think of Trey Lance?
Speaker 3 (02:33):
That's a very good question. So I mean going into
this season, you know Trey Lance, obviously it's the last
year of his contracts. So this preseason, I think Jerry Jones,
Steven Jones, Will McLay and Cowboy fans too want to
see Trey Lance show them something. Right, Okay, if you're
gonna move on from Dak Prescott and you're gonna move
on from possibly Cooper Rush, and you're gonna look for
(02:55):
another quarterback, could Trey Lance maybe filled that Foyd? And
so from yesterday he kind of looked at the same
quarterback that he was when when he was drafted. He's
super athletics, super quick, had some great runs last night,
but holds under the ball a little bit too long,
his throws sometimes are behind, and he only attempted to
(03:16):
pass his twenty yards down the field. So he's a
quarterback that, you know, maybe a little bit more conservative,
likes to dink and duncan. You know, there's nothing wrong
with that, But for the Cowboys offense and for their playmakers,
you know, you want to be able to take chances.
So I mean he threw I think forty four times
forty one times and only had one hundred and eighty
eight passing yards, which is a little bit scary. If
(03:38):
you're throwing the ball forty times a game, you want
to see that number above three hundred, maybe even four hundred.
That was not the case. So for Cowboy fans, and
I've had a lot of Cowboy fans who say, hey,
maybe it'll be Trey Lands next season, I would pump
the brakes because there was nothing that he did yesterday that,
you know, really super impressed me outside of you know,
his ability to make play running the ball. And you know,
(04:03):
if Kyle Shanahan decided that we want to move on
from him, then I think that kind of tells you
a lot.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
That One other thing about Winnington, Remember Jordan was a
sixth round draft choice, and when you're in the sixth round,
the final round, the odds are not good of you
making the football team. This was the quote from Sean McVay,
(04:31):
the Rams coach, after the game yesterday. He called him
a mature rookie. He said it was a good start.
And then listen to this quote. He's a grown man,
and he played like a grown man with a ball
in his hands. He did a great job without it.
I just really like him. He's going to be a
factor for us, and I thought today was a good
start for him, and he's the type of guy that's
only going to continue to grow from that. So that
(04:53):
sounds like a guy's got a good shot to make
the team. And the Rams offensive, I can tell you
is a Rams fan is going to change a little
bit this year. They're not gonna be nearly as relyingt
on the tight end as they've been in the past.
Tyler Higbee just can't stay healthy, and they've had other
other guys in and out, so they're gonna they're gonna
probably keep an extra wide receiver or two as a
(05:14):
result of that. Also, by the way, I know people
probably don't know this much. They might have said someone
in the Telecastpuoka Nakua not only wasn't gonna play yesterday,
might not play the entire preseason. He's had a knee problem.
Now they hope to have him back and ready for
the for the opener, but there's a chance he may
not be. Obviously, Cooper Cup's not going to play in
any other preseason Uh, and I don't know that we'll
(05:35):
see that much from two two at well or a
couple of the other Ram receivers. So my point is
is that Jordan Winnington has a solid shot to make
the team, especially after yesterday's performance. Okay, you said you
watched some of the game.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Well, also, real quick, yep, what round was Poka drafted in? Fifth?
There you go?
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Yeah, Yeah, the Rams have been able to find some
really good talent in the lower rounds on both offensive defense.
It's made it difference for them. Okay, Uh, you said
you watched some of the game. Did you watch any
of the pre game?
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Actually I did, and it was Isaiah Standbeck and cal Humans.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Yeah. Yeah, and Isaiah, by the way, I did a
state championship game with him. He worked one of the
state championship games with me last year and I really
enjoyed it. We did the I think the three A
Division two game when Gunner just steamrolled h their opponent
to win the state championship. But Kyle Yeomans is another
one of the North Texas broadcasts. Yeah it came came
(06:34):
out of there, but yes, he was on the pregame
show with him.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
And you know they're talking about Ceedee Lamb and Jerry
Jones walking back his comments. And did you.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
See Jerry's comment? For those who didn't see, he was
sitting there with Mickey Spagnola and he said, now I
understand completely the angst that's happening when you're anxious about
and someone says anything about whether you're missed or not. Well, ceed,
you're missed, okay, Yeah, but you're not missed out here
competing and it doesn't put any pressure pressure, putting any
(07:05):
pressure any place. Allness was his quote. Yeah, you're missed,
but you only missed to a point. Now were you
asking if I watched the broadcast for that?
Speaker 3 (07:16):
Yeah? Did you see Jerry say that? Because I thought
you were going to talk about Tom Brady kind of
in the background. Because did did they air it on
Fox yesterday? Because I saw stuff like he's ready for
his broadcast debut with him and Kevin Burkhart were there?
Speaker 2 (07:28):
No, the game was on NFL network, but in these
parts he had to watch it on CW. I'm fifty four,
but it was an NFL he and on the NFL
network they carried I think the RAMS telecast that had
Andrew Ceciliano and some of the other.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
Okay, so I was just curious. I guess Brady and
Burkhart were there, just yes, soaking it in.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
They might and they might have been doing a rehearsal,
because Fox does there you go, I do rehearsal.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Rehearsal. Yeah, okay, I saw that, but yeah I did.
I did hear the comments. And uh, because was that
on on Friday or Saturday when Jerry had that quote?
It was Thursday.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
I know some folks might have been a little thrown
off by what I said. Thursday, no boo, no boo,
And he said no boo. That was Thursday when he
said that. So he did kind of walk it back.
But but then he didn't. I mean he did in
that he said you're missed, but then he said, but
you're not missed in terms of when we're out here
competing me. Okay, because you're moving on and you're thinking
(08:26):
about what you got to do on the practice. But
I get that. But yeah, and and it's funny if
you listen to or read the comments of the NFL reporters,
they're kind of mystified about where this is and where
this isn't they said, they just keep saying they're working
on it, They're working on it, they're working on it,
and they think they'll get it done. But they're working
on it. And that's about it. That's about all you're
(08:47):
hearing about it.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
I think Clarence still put out a tweet a week
or two ago that said things with CD weren't close
at all, and people were were coming at Clarence saying
why are you being so negative? This and that, and
then Arents kind of show them on Thursday like, hey,
you know saying there talking but you know it's not
going anywhere.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Yeah, So we'll see where it further goes after that.
Where we go next will be inconceivable. And then also
we'll get into the AP Top twenty five pole that
is out. Like we said, no real big surprise is
out of it, but it is official. It is out.
So we'll get to that.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
But we got.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
Inconceivable, which includes this crazy Olympic thing going on with
Jordan Chiles and the Brin's metal in the in the
women's floor exercise, the links and the layers that have
developed from that. So we'll get to all that and more.
We'll continue here on this Monday Afternoon from Here and
