Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello again, everybody, and welcome to a Monday edition of

(00:04):
the Craigway Show here on sports RADIOAM thirteen hundred The Zone.
My name is Craig Wait. Thanks so much for joining us.
We appreciate I hope your weekend went well. Hope you
stayed cool, dry and comfortable unless you were trying to
be you know, hot and sweaty and all that other
kind of stuff. It happened on the football field for sure.
Long words had a scrimmage inside of DKR Texas Memorial Stadium.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Back to the practice field this afternoon.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
There's the first weekend of preseason football is in the books.
And the question, the burning question everyone wants to know
is did Cameron d park or watch any of the
Cowboys Rams preseason opener yesterday. The D, after all, on

(00:51):
the birth certificates, stands for Dallas as in the Cowboys,
as in his dad's favorite football team, and Cameron will
still say is his favorite, even though he vowed not
to watch them, at least in the regular season. Anyway,
he was kind of equivocating on whether he might watch
some of the preseason opener at SOFI Stadium yesterday against

(01:13):
the Los Angeles Rams.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Good afternoon, And did you watch any of that game afternoon,
Craig and I did.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
I did watch some Cowboys Rams action yesterday and by
the second half, I was purely watching it for Jordan Whittington.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Yeah. Yeah, it had a fantastic game. He did. He did.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
That's the number one thing even as a RAMS fans.
That's one of the few redeeming things that came out
of that game for me as a Rams fan was
the performance of Jordan Whittington and the rookie place kicker
as well, because they've had some issues with kick in
the basso. At least it was a decent kicking. My goodness,

(01:54):
that game was just in terms of offense. But it
was a preseason opener.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
I expect that.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
So we'll talk obviously about the first weekend of NFL preseason,
and however, how several former Longhorns fared over the weekend.
Like I said, the current Longhorns on the practice field
this afternoon.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
And then.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
There was in addition to the NFL, there's Major League
Baseball to discuss. Uh, there's a there was a PGA
tour stop that may have just ended just a few minutes.
I mean, it's crazy, absolutely really kind of belongs and inconceivable,
but well, we'll.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Keep it within the sporting realm as well.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
And then there was the Olympics, the wrap up of
the Olympics, and the drama may still not yet be
done with regard to Jordan Chiles and the bronze medal.
We'll get to we'll get to that, we'll talk about that.
We do have also inconceivable this afternoon. But in terms
of the Olympics, I know you said you watched some

(02:54):
of the Cowboys Rams game yesterday, but about Saturday, Ed,
I take it you watch both gold medal basketball games
Saturday and Sunday.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
I watched the men's did not get a chance to
watch the women's game live, but man, the men's gold
medal game against France up there in one of the
best basketball time basketball games of all time in the
Olympic sports. I mean, what a fantastic performance in what
a way for the US to win gold with Steph

(03:26):
Curry just going out of his mind in that fourth
quarter with four consecutive three pointers that put the US
cut them in front and then slowly put away France,
who had had a really frisky team, a really good team,
and a team that's going to challenge the US for
years to come. With Webin Yama, who played excellent. You

(03:49):
already forget how young he is, by the way, he
is so already basketball basketball, mature, but fantastic game.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Katie.

Speaker 3 (03:59):
I think he's up there as the greatest basketball player
in Team USA history, both men's and women's. I think
he's You can't argue that after winning another gold medal,
after passing five hundred points, after passing Lisa Leslie for
most points on the Team USA side.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
So congrats to Katie. I know he's excited for that.
And I think he's got four gold medals.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Now, he has four more than any men's Olympic basketball player.
The women's game, I would submit to you, was every
bit as dramatic, maybe even more so than the men's
finish again against France, and I kind of had the feeling.
I don't know about you, but when I watched the
men's game on Saturday, I kind of a feeling it

(04:39):
was going to be difficult because France would get that
boost from me on the home four. The fans were
going crazy. Did you notice they do something? And I
don't know if this is regularly done in European games
over there. But they did this during the Olympic games there,
certainly whenever France was playing, and they did it in

(04:59):
the gold that game against the US.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
And I don't know if you noticed this.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
This is something that would never be allowed in the
NBA or in college basketball during timeouts or even some
dead ball situations. And I saw it several times. There
would be kind of like you know, if you go
to a Maverick game or a Spurs game, you'll see
a high people that were the microphone during a time
out and they're.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
Trying to go. They had guys with.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
Bullhorns, bullhrns out there reverberating, try to just rock in
that place. So I had a feeling it was going
to be a difficult go for them because of that
home court environment, and a lot and a lot of
the US athletes spoke to that. I heard Kevin Durant
speak to it. I heard Lebron speak to it. There

(05:45):
were several that who talked about they knew it was gonna.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Be a tough go on that and it was. It was.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
It was all of that and all credit. So much
credit goes to France for how well they played and
how tough. They played the US, but they got they
got staffed at the end. I'm Steph Curry did to
them what we've seen Steph Curry do throughout the course.
One thing I thought was pretty interesting that NBC did
and ESPN did it as well.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
In highlight recaps.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
They showed all those gigantic moments that Steph Curry has
had as a professional for the Warriors against the Thunder
and against the Celtics and against the Kings and all
of these these massive shots that he's made over the years.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
So this one just kind of slotted in.

Speaker 1 (06:27):
With the difference was this was Olympics where he had
never participated in the Olympics before, So there was that,
and you thought it might be like that. And I
said to Linda, I said, you know, the women's game
is probably gonna be just like this, maybe even more difficult.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
Even though the women had been.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
Cruising and it had an easier time all the way
to the gold medal game. They win their semifinal game
by twenty one points. It was like, Okay, that was
a grind. They had to lead in the first half.
Then it kind of slipped away with some mistakes and
they missed a ton of layups and the high percentage shots,
and then France hit some threes and opened up a
ten point lead in the third quarter, and then they

(07:07):
rallied back, and then they got the lead again, and
then it was going back and forth.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
I don't think it was more than a four point.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
Lead from about seven minutes remaining in the ball game
all the way to the end.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
And at the end you.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
Saw a big three point plan thought okay, that'll be enough,
and then France comes down and Gabby Williams hits a
three and so now it's down to one. And then
had come down and they get fouled and Leiah Copper
has to hit a couple of or no, no, it
was Kelsey Plumb who hit a couple of free throws
to put them up by three with three point eight
to go. So the second one goes in and the
first thing, I'm thinking, what is it? We always talk

(07:42):
about do you foul? Don't you found that sort of thing?
And I thought, absolutely, you foul. Later in I think
Brian Windhorst of ESPN was interviewing Cheryl Reeve, the head coach.
She said, yeah, we messed that up. We didn't guard
their best three point shooter, and we didn't foul when
that was the play was the foul, and they didn't.

(08:02):
They just happened to get a break. And that Gabby
Williams's foot, the foot wasn't just touching the three point line.
It was a cross that the toes were across the
three point line, which he hit the shot to bank
it in and cut the final margin down to one point.
But it was it would have been. And I heard
Brian Windhorst do this on Sports Center, and I agree

(08:23):
with him. He said, you remember the miracle on ice
in eighty He said, it was close to being kind
of a miracle along the sind if it had happened
that way. Now, it is also important to point out
that if Williams shot had been a three and the
gun it, it would have just meant overtime. They would
have gone overtime. The US was up three. They wouldn't
have lost on the shot, but they would have had

(08:44):
to win it in overtime to do it. So it
was two thrilling I for one, as an American and
as a US basketball fan. I mean not only really
happy that they won, but I for one am also
happy they really got pushed.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
In the last game. I mean, yeah, it's nice to
win by blowouts.

Speaker 1 (09:03):
And I'm the first to tell you, you know, if
I'm calling a Texas game, and obviously I want the
Long Runes to win, I'd like them to win it
as easily as possible. That said, that said, what are
the more memorable games? Obviously the National championship game that
young and yep, that happens, you know, with it with
nineteen seconds to go in the game. I think of
Matt Coleman banking in the three to beat Oklahoma. I

(09:25):
think of those those last second shots. Those are the
ones that stay with us. But in the moment you're
kind of hoping and wishing maybe that it comes a
little easier. But in retrospect, it's cool that they got
pushed and yet answered the challenge. So it's five consecutive
goals for US men's basketball, and it's an unprecedented eight

(09:48):
for women's basketball, the most in any team sport competition
consecutive gold medals in Olympic history. So it was that
I agree with you that Evan Durant's probably the greatest
single Olympic basketball performer, given the fact not only does
he have the four gold medals, but also his top

(10:09):
five hundred points and has more points than any men's
or women's player. That said, congratulation, Diana Troussi's got her
sixth gold medal, and Sue Byrd with whom they visited
the post game, has five, you know, so they had more.
But still in all, it was a great Olympic experience.
The US wound up with its most medals since the

(10:32):
eighty four Summer Games in LA and of course where
are the next Olympics in La? In twenty twenty eight,
they wound up tied with China for the most gold
with forty. And I think about how they barely lost
the high jump, barely lost the high jump on Saturday,
settled for a silver. Had he won that, or if

(10:54):
volleyball just hadn't gotten smoked by Italy in the last game,
the gold medal game, US would have actually wound up
with more gold medals than China. As it turned out,
they wound up with forty, just like the Chinese, and
they wound up with one hundred and twenty six, which
was way more than any other nation.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Then that's really cool.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
And then there's, like I said, this other drama with
regard to Jordan Childs, which still as we speak right
now at two twelve pm Central time Central daylight time,
has not been resolved. We'll get into that, but we're
gonna talk college football. The brand new preseason hot off
the Press, freshly minted AP Top twenty five College Football

(11:34):
