Speaker 1 (00:00):
Couple of NFL notes. It came down this afternoon. JJ McCarthy.
Was he number eight overall pick? Was he he was
eight or nine?

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Right?

Speaker 1 (00:13):
Yeah, he was drafted pretty high and ten. Okay, knee
injury could cost him part or all of his rookie season.
He actually looked pretty decent in his debut. He threw
an early interception against the Raiders and then kind of
turned it around and did pretty well. But he's going

(00:36):
to have to undergo surgery this week, according to coach
Kevin O'Connell, at which point doctors will determine how to
address the injury. It's torn meniscus, is what it is.
So depending on the severity of that, it might be
a few weeks where it might be the entire season,
so that they will determine just how serious it is

(00:56):
and what the recovery timetable will be and whether he
can really come back off of that.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
It's gonna be a lot of Sam Darnold the Vikings. Yeah,
it looks like and it.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
Looked like he was probably going to win the starting job, although,
like I said, they were encouraged by what McCarthy showed
last week that over the weekend, so.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
As a result of that, McCarthy out and I have
surgery and it could be out for some time depending
they'll they'll know more when they got really going, all right.
A couple other things, Speaking of offense, you see the
Commander signed Martevas Bryant.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Ooh, did day Martavas? In case you're wondering.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
The last time Martavis Bryant caught a pass in the
National Football League And I guess yeah, was it twenty nineteen?
Further back twenty eighteen, further twenty seven? Well, let's see,
he did play. He did play in twenty seventeen. He

(02:06):
signed with the Raiders in twenty eighteen, he did and
then was indefinitely.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Suspended by the NFL.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
He was later signed by If you want to keep
track of this, two Canadian Football League teams never played
in the game with them.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Also spent time in the.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
Indoor Football League, the Fan Controlled Football League.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
I don't leave them who never even heard of the
Fan Controlled Football League?

Speaker 1 (02:33):
And the XFL said he didn't know if hed get
another chance in the NFL, said he needed to be
prepared physically and mentally.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
But Washington has signed.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
They only have one other receiver taller than six '
two in camp. That's Bryce and Tremaine who is six
four and just trying to make the roster.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
So he the Cowboys did sign him this past season, Yeah,
in twenty twenty three to the practice squad. I don't
think he never appeared in the game. Dallas eventually capped
him or cut him in May and area is now
in August.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
So he was on the roster for almost exactly two
months of the Cowboys from November sixth to January fourth,
and we'll see dan Quinn, the new head coach, says
he's pretty anxious to prove he can still play. So
it's it's probably a low risk situation for the Commanders

(03:30):
to take with him to see what they can do.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
And it's also another Cowboy player that has followed dan Quinn.
That's true Washington. I mean yeah, I already have Doris
Armstrong who's headed over there, handful of others.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
Ance Fowler, speaking of the Cowboys, Cheumey doga toe injury.
He's going to miss time going well into the regular season.
So Tyler Geydon is getting their having to ramp up
his development pretty quickly. Idoga hurt his toe in the
first quarter of the game against the Rams on Sunday.
He was in a boot afterwards. MRI yesterday, no determination

(04:08):
reguarding whether he has to have surgery. Tyler Goton played
twenty one snaps against the Rams. Looked good, Yeah, said,
he looked pretty good. So they're hoping he can replace
Tyron Smith. Of course, signed with the Jets, and then
Ydoga took most of the first team snaps early in
training camp, got it, worked with the number one unit

(04:29):
at a few times. Hedoga started six games last season
at guard and tackle in his first season with the Cowboys.
He just re signed in April a one year deal,
so now they don't know because of the toe injury.
So you could see Tyler Guidon really accelerated in his development.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
The tough part is is that in Week one he'll
be right across from Miles Garrett, so it'll be a
quick welcome to the league moment for Tyler Guiton. He
looked good in the first game. Obviously rookie left tackle,
there's gonna be some growing pains with him in Tyler
Smith on the left side. But it looks like it's
been one preseason game. It looks like the Cowboys staffed

(05:10):
ad a great job of locating another great offensive lineman
in the first round, which is one thing. No matter
what I said about Jerry Jones, you cannot argue with
the way they have draft offensive lineman in the draft
since twenty fourteen, twenty thirteen, they have they have a high,
high success rate of drafting. I can't believe I just
heard you. Hey, credit credit works, credit is due.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
I can't believe. Compliment Cowboys ownership and management.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
Of the football. Now when it comes to resigning these guys,
different story. Yeah, yeah, I miss you, Tyron Smith, you
miss you. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
So anyway, there's just a couple of notes there, and
and the Cowboys get ready for the Raiders in preseason
game number two.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
If you made a decision, I don't know if you
plan the we what nine is that is that Saturday?
I don't think so. I think I see another Trey Lance.
I'm good there, so good about Guiden So I don't know.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
I think I'm okay, you're not interested in any of
the other position battles, and.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Now what might happen with them? No, because I mean
now we can just read about it the next day.
I know it sounds kind of lame, But that's the way.
It's nine o'clock at night on Saturday. What are we
doing here, Well, it's in Vegas. That's so late. Though
it's in Vegas.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
It's seven o'clock Pacific bedtime, not on a Saturday night.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Are you kidding?

Speaker 1 (06:42):
Come on, yeah, So it's yeah, nine o'clock, nine o'clock
Saturday night. And then they play their only home preseason
game the following Saturday.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Against the Chargers. I did not realize that they still
charge full price for preseason games.

Speaker 1 (07:03):
That's why, that's why the owners have wanted to keep
as many preseason games as possible, even if they add
regular season games. This is all part of that debate
about eighteen games in the regular season, which I think
they should have gone to back some time ago and
trim the preseason game total to two. Now it's and

(07:27):
if you're playing two preseason games, one of them's on
the road, one of them is at home, so you're
really only getting stuck. And this is if you're a
season ticket older or somebody who's used to buying tickets
to go to the games, you're only stuck with paying
full price for one game, one preseason game. Because the
element's on the road, so you know, that's a way

(07:49):
to look at it, I think, but this whole weird
unbalanced of seventeen games is strange.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
We're at three precision games right now, yep for three.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
Yeah, they went to three when they went to seventeen,
So you know, I think two is fine. Yeah two. Listen,
who are we kidding? The starters aren't playing in it anyway.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
So for the most part, these coaches have a pretty
good idea of who's going to make the team. You're
seeing that in camp, Yeah, in practice. On the you
don't need four games. To the side, I think two
is probably good number, and I bet some of them
are just saying, hey, one's good enough.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
I mean two, two would be fine because you could
have one at home and one on the road and
that would be okay. But I certainly don't think they
need more than two, and eighteen would be fine with
a nice round regular season number. All right, We'll be
back to wrap up our number two here on sports
