Speaker 1 (00:00):
To the text line where someone pointed out and then
we were talking about the Longhorn injuries and someone said,
you know, there's a running back hiding in a safety
or a linebacker body on this roster. Rochean turned out
pretty darn good. Rochean, remember, was a quarterback when he
came in from PNG. He was actually from porton Ah's cards.
(00:25):
He was actually a quarterback, although I remember when he
arrived on campus the expectation was that he would probably
not remain at quarterback, that he could have wound up
as a linebacker or some other thing, wound up obviously
in the backfield.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
And he did.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
He did as the Texas had turned out pretty darn good.
What about what the Longhorns have to do now? Two
running backs down because of injury. CJ. Baxter lost for
the year with the knee injury, and the word coming
down yesterday that the freshman Christian Clark would have torn
achilles is gone. And most people understand this. Most people
(01:04):
understand it. But for those who don't, and I've seen
some things on social media or what what.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Are they doing with these guys? Why are all these injuries?
Speaker 1 (01:14):
It's non contact. It just happened It's one of those
things sometimes that just happens with a knee injury or
an achilles or something like that. It happens on a
cut in a run. Sometimes running in a straight line,
it happens. It's unfortunate, but it's an unfortunate you might say,
(01:36):
you know, occupational hazard. It does happen even with no
contact involved. Doesn't mean they don't stay intense. And Jaday
Baron was asked, when so all these guys have talked
about the intensity that they've taken to the practice field,
And then Jatty was asked, what does intensity mean in practice?
Speaker 2 (01:54):
I mean, it's just everything he speaks about. He always
is an effort first. You know, you can't coach effort,
so he always hits. He harps on effort and just
playing physical and if it's the third periods, the third
periods of a live periods of live periers and just
playing within the rules, but playing fas and make sure
that we're being physical at practice throughout the day.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Remember Andrew mccooba, former LBJ Jaguar Outstanding Player when to Clemson,
started in the secondary for three years, transferred through the
portal back to the team, and Baron who knows mccooba
very well. The two played high school football against one another.
When Conley went up against LBJ and he asked he
was asked, what mccooba brings and has brought to this team.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
Amazing. He's a smart player, well experienced. You know, I'm
gonna speak highly of him, not just because you know
that's been my guy for ten years, but he's a
smart player. He knows the ins and outs of the football.
If he's beat somewhere, he knows how to recover and
win on the back end. But that's a very smart player.
He's good to have him in the back end. By
the way, he's not exaggerating me. He's his ten years.
(02:54):
He's known Andrew mccooba since middle school. They were playing
middle school older than their years in high school.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
In all the years in college. Now, what about the
variety of positions that John a has played. He's played corner,
he's played safety. You know, I think he really excels
at the star position. It requires so much of the
scanning of the offense. He's done all of it. And
he's also likes playing on that outside corner as well
(03:22):
as the other positions.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Honestly, it's been good. They've they've moved me around. You know,
safety it is. It's all safety, Nickel to a corner,
And I think it's good because, you know, if if
something happens there at a position, I kind of know
the feeling if if that person, if like if I
was at Nickel and I didn't get a deep enough
drop for the safety, I kind of know the feeling.
I know what it feels like. So just knowing all
the ins and outs, so each position, this kind of
(03:45):
helps me to be in a better position, and it
makes me a smarter player, knowing what's happening over there
and what's happening over here on a on a more
of a better standpoint.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
And you know another thing, I always like his hearing
veterans talk about veterans. The veterans are always going to
be asked about the young players. The young players are
always going to be asked about the veterans. But it's
fun to hear the veterans talk about the guys that
they've lined up with and played with for the past
few years. That has happened with say Ja Day and
with a guy like Baron Surrell, and he says the
maturity level is what has changed more than anything with
(04:15):
Sorel and how he it has led him to become
a team leader.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
It's been amazing. He's went through a lot of things,
adversity and things like that and challenges and and he
just seems to keep climbing as a as a man
on and off the field. And he's always handled his business.
He's always picking people up even if even if you
think he's having a bad day, he's gonna pick you
up and he's gonna make sure that you're on board
and and everything. I love Currell and I love how
he's how he's matured over the years and how he's
(04:39):
changed physically, like his body has changed and everything and mentally.
So that's that's the hell of a player right there,
and it's gonna be good for us. Now.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
About this injury thing and the running back thing, uh,
probably a good idea to ask somebody on the offense.
Probably a good idea to ask the quarterback. And quinn
Ewers was asked what his message has been to the
offense with all of the injuries, and you know what
does that mean to him? Does that mean there's got
to be more run plays coming from the quarterback spot whatever.
(05:10):
Quinn says that the rest of the offense is prepared
for whatever eventuality it needs to produce.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
I mean, yeah, first off, definitely first to see you
know that go down and you know injuries.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Injuries do happen.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
It's just a part of the game that we play,
and it's it sucks to see that for sure. But
at the end of the day, I think coach Choice
and Coach Stark do a great job of recruiting, you know,
good running backs that can ultimately fill in the position
if needed. And ultimately, I'm just trying to do whatever
I can to help this team win football game. So
(05:43):
if that means I need to run more than so
be it.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
It's a natural progression in fall camp, workouts and training
camp for reporters to ask, especially since they're not there
to see the practices about who was showing out, who
is made stride and one of the guys that it
is filtered down both through what the coaches have said
(06:10):
and other things that Silas Bolton, the Oregon State transfer
for a guy who was not here in the spring,
he seems to have caught on quickly and quin Ewers
was asked what silas Bolden has shown so far.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
When he first got here, I could just tell how
much he cared about the game of football and how
much he really wants to succeed. And you know, seeing
that from a guy like him, and him being able
to go into the receiver room and you know, show
show you know how he can play whenever you care
that much about the game. And Johday is correct on
all those things. He's been balling out and it's cool
(06:44):
to see see a guy like him do the things
that he does.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
We're halfway between scrimmages. There was one Saturday, there'll be
one this Saturday. So as they turned the corner and
get ready for scrimmage number two, quinn Ewers was asked
what he thought of his own performance from scrimage numb one.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
Yeah, I mean, I think it wasn't as good as
I wanted it to be. But at the end of
the day, that's why we're out here and that's why
we're practicing, and I'm going to continue to keep trying
to improve my game and improve areas around me and
just continue to try to win football games and get
to a position where we're at our best.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
And one more thing, about this injury deal. Quinn's already
talked about him and asked about and evaluated as a leader,
and how he has to be a leader of this
football team, and how he's more of a leader as
time goes on. So that doesn't change with the injuries,
but it might accent it a little more, I think,
so for sure.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
I mean the team definitely, you know, needs that just
positivity every now and then, for sure, whenever a couple
of guys like that go down in that room, for sure.
But you know, at the end of the day, like
I said earlier, I think we have guys that are
going to be more than capable of stepping in filling
up those roles.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
All Right, we're gonna hear more from Shaddy, Baron and Quinn.
You were throughout the course of the program this afternoon.
