Speaker 1 (00:00):
Here on this Wednesday afternoon on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred of the Zone. Cameron Parker is, by his nature
and his birthplace a NASCAR fan, right am I? Right?

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Of course?

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Yeah I am as well. I grew up fifteen miles
from the Petty Enterprises, garage and Level Cross. We were
all big Petty kid Me and my brothers were big
Richard Petty fans when we were kids. A couple of
my brothers added, like later kle Yarboro and David Pearson
to the group. A lot of respect for all those
drivers and all that sort of stuff. But you know,

(00:41):
there's all kinds of those phrases about Rubbin's racing and
all that other kind of stuff. But I take it
you at least all the highlights if you didn't see
it live about what happened in Richmond last week? Oh yeah,
Well for folks who didn't see what happened, first of all,
how did you hitch him?

Speaker 2 (01:00):
I loved it?

Speaker 1 (01:02):
Really? Are you an RCR guy? Is that why Richard
Children's Racing?

Speaker 2 (01:05):
No? No, I don't have a rooting interest in Austin
Dylan or Joey Logano. Both are both are fine. Take
him or leave him, Uh, that's not racing.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
You know.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
I always think back to what Dela Renhardt said, which
is rubbing is racing, right, go back to that, which,
by the way, is Richard Childer's racing. Earnheart Well, I
mean the way they set up for the playoffs, right,
Austin Dillon needs to win to get in Stufody, that's
going to happen. You know. If you if you don't
want that to happen, then change the format. But NASCAR

(01:36):
loves that. I mean, it brings a lot of attention
to sport. He gets a lot of social media clicks
and stuff. But if you're a driver like Joey Logano
or even Denny Hamlin who also got taken out, you
don't like it.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Well, and I'll say this NASCAR, if it is true
as you're saying, and and there may be the truth
in what you're saying, that NASCAR quote unquote likes it,
they have to say the proper things about how it's
not good for the sport and they have to set
down rulings, and so they did today they ruled that

(02:08):
Austin Dillon's win. For folks that didn't hear it, Dylan
hit Bo Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano sent them both
into the wall in rapid succession on the final lap,
and it cleared his path to get the win. He
had not won a race in two years, and they

(02:29):
were pretty desperate almost two years, and they were pretty
desperate to win in terms of the NASCAR points standings
and the playoffs teams and to get a win. So
playing simple, he wrecked him. He ran him into the wall,
hit him from behind, and just ran him in.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
The two other drivers were not happy about that. In fact, Legano,
after the race goes he got fined for this, smoking
his tires on Pitt Road when he drove past Dylan
and his team. But the main punishment that came down
is a NASCAR rule that Austin Villain's win at Richmond

(03:08):
Raceway will stand. He gets credit for the win, his
first win of the season. However, it will not count
toward eligibility for the playoffs. His playoff eligibility was revoked
because of quote actions detrimental to stock car auto racing
or NASCAR as determined in the Soul Discretion of NASCAR

(03:33):
end Quote. Dylan and the RCR team were also docked
twenty five points in both the drivers and the owners standings.
He dropped from twenty six to thirty first in the
driver standings. His spot her, Brandon Finish, was also suspended
for three races. He said, what does the spotter do?
And tells you where you can where you can hit

(03:56):
the guys if you need to. And like I said,
Logana was fifty thousand dollars for smoking his tires on
Pitt Road as he drove past Dylan and the team.
No immediate word of RCR Richard Chulder's racing would appeal
the decision there. That's what do you think about that?

Speaker 2 (04:12):
I mean, it's it's a it's setting presidents right for
the future for drivers that you know, hey, if I
want to get in, I can just wreck this guy
and there's no consequence. So does seem might the right
thing to do for NASCAR. It's still again, if you're
an average fan, it's not a NASCAR fan. You see
that and you probably you find that interesting, right, So
it's kind it's a tough place to pick from, but

(04:35):
it's the right thing to do.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Here's here's my only thought on this. And I understand
the aggression of drivers on the track and they've got
to do what they've got to do to try to win.
But when you intentionally and it was intentional if you
look at the rebike, he drives right into him and
even said in the post racing, I hated to do it,
so basically was admitting it. I hated do it, but

(05:00):
you know I had to do we had to get
our win. I hated to do it. And then he
talked about how blessed he was and he had his
baby daughter with him there and and that really made
Legano mad. He was staying up there with his kid
and he's thanking God for this, you know, he was.
He was pretty hot about it.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Yeah, I mean for him to get in. He's a
driver you mentioned, has not had a lot of success
five wins in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
And he was one of the guys that was looked
as one of the hot young drivers coming in that
could be really really good.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Yeah, and he just hasn't worked out. Has not had
a lot of playoffs success either. You know, they've definitely
had missed the playoffs the last couple of years as well.
So desperate, desperate a getting because not only needs to
get into the playoffs, have a chance to win the championship,
but also to.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
Keep his seade.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
Yeah, to keep his seat because I think there's been
a lot of speculation about him whether or not he
would return to RCR or not, so kind of you know,
had to do what he had to do, but ultimately
doesn't work out.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
Here's the one thing I was gonna say about this.
I get it, the sense of desperation. He's got to
make a move to try to do something because on
a short track like Richmond, he's not going to He
was not going to pass Logano.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
And enough lead going to the final two turns.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
Yeah, he might have been able to get past Hamlum,
he was not getting past Logano to win the race,
and he needed to win the race, which is what
he did by wrecking both of those guys. My thought
on this is, I understand all of that, but what
if one of those guys get seriously hurt because of
him intentionally wrecking them. That's where NASCAR had to step

(06:34):
in and say, look, we can't have this because somebody
could get hurt or worse, maybe even killed in a
deal like that if you hit him going they hit
that walls. Even with the Hans device and all the
extra safety measures they've taken since the death of Dale
Earnhardt back in two thousand and one. Since then they're
being you know, more careful about it. And by the way,

(06:56):
people are gonna have how all the opinions they want
about restrict or play racing.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
I get it.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
I went to Talladega back in eighty four before it
was restrictor plate. It was amazing stuff. But you do
with restrictor plate racing. You're on those big super speedways,
You're going to have a big rack. It's just you know,
everybody waits for the big one, that sort of thing.
And so they've taken all these safety measures, but the
biggest safety measure that they cannot control is the driving.

(07:25):
If someone makes a bad move, you know, either earlier
in the race or down the stretch of the race,
it's just certainly on the last lap it's going to
be more magnified. All right, we'll be back to wrap
up hour number two here in sports Radio AM thirteen
under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
