Speaker 1 (00:00):
We continue here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred. The
Zone Long Corn football team back on the practice field
to continue their work. They have scrimmage number two coming
up this Saturday. Now, it's in between the times of
the scrimmages that the coaches say they learn a lot
about their guys and see, you're making strides on the
practice field, not just on the inside a DKR for
(00:23):
the scrimmage. Sure, you want to show your wares and
what you've learned and all that, but the development that
takes place during these weeks of training camp leading up
to the start of the season so important. And that's
true as well for veterans like Jaddey Barron, who you know,
not only for his own development and like we said Jodday,
(00:44):
he's worked at both corners, both safeties, the star back
and all that sort of thing, but also looking around
him to see what defensive backs have made in the
biggest strides in the off season.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Myself, not much without Without myself, I mean, I would
say all the guys, Honestly, all the guys showed a
lot of improvement. We've we've moved everybody, They've moved everybody around,
so we have we have a lot like six guys
playing two three different positions. So just the versatility that
we have in the back end is good and it
is good to have them, good depth to have, you know,
(01:16):
it's gonna be a long season. We have a lot
of games ahead of us, so just having that depth,
and I'll say everybody has came a long way, but
I'm loving everybody in the back end honestly.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
Well, the depth always gets tested on both sides of
the ball when you do have training camp injuries, and
the ones that are most notable obviously have happened in
the offensive backfield, with two running backs c J. Baxter
and Christian Clark done for the year after a knee
and an achilles injury respectively for those two guys, so
(01:45):
Jade was asked, what's the team's reaction to all of
this seeing a couple of guys drop around them in
these injuries start to add up?
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Yeah, We've we suffered a lot of injuries. I've spoken.
I've spoken to one of the cats that got injured.
I just told him kind of and within life, like you, you
go through things and I tell them just to lean
on lean on God and not your own understanding. Every
everything's gonna be okay. It's his plan. We kind of
don't you know, we don't see it as humans. We
don't see it at that moment when something happens. We
we kind of see it for what is like dang,
(02:14):
like it's bad. But at the end, at the end
goal you'll see you'll see the maturity level of the
cats that got hurt, and you'll see on the on
the flip side that it was it was supposed to happen.
It was God's playing.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
So uh, the long Worne of course, should continue to
add people in the offseason to the roster, and that
includes two transfers to the defense, Bill Norton and t
Savea coming in from Arizona. And what has Barons seen
from those guys.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Uh, they just they bring a lot of good debt
to us. They're they're players that already have experience. So
that's something that we needed with with having guys that
left that had experience. So just just having that experience
and then and then getting coach from a great coach,
Coach Baker, so that that's something that's improvement for everybody
and it's gonna help them help those two guys.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
Yeah, h adding Kenny Baker to that coaching staff certainly
helps out as well. And then going back to this,
it's not just the injury thing, it's it's also the
developmental thing for the younger players uh in the secondary,
in the linebacking corps and also UH on h on
(03:20):
the defensive front line. So the question for Jade is,
you know what, how do you instill that next man
up mentality for those guys to be ready not only
in case of injury but also their own development. How
do you instill that next man up mentality in the
younger guys?
Speaker 2 (03:37):
I mean, it's a it's a program that that we
have strongly, so Coach Sarking those guys, the staff they recruit,
heck of a ball players we got. We got a
lot of depth on every position, and when we meet
next guy up, we're expecting everybody on the team to
be ready. If I go down, for instance, I know
somebody who's going to be ready. And that's how it
is across the board, just having everybody ready. We'll have
the eleven on eleven on both offense and defense and
(04:00):
then special team, so no matter no matter who goes
down and who's not having it, where I was gonna
have somebody to pick us up and we're gonna be
ready to go.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
There's some thoughts from Shoddy Barron now Quinn ewers last
time we heard him talking about, uh, the injuries. Quinn
also likes complimenting the guys on the other side of
the football what he sees from the defensive side, and
he was asked about Baron Surrell and where he's taking
the biggest strides as a leader.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
I think the biggest thing for Baron is just his
ability to pull anyone along, no matter what position it is.
I think that just his positive outlook on the game,
but also with how how much he cares about the game.
And you can just tell that it means a lot
to him. And you know, he saw he saw two
guys go get get get paid a good amount of money.
(04:48):
So I mean he I know he's he's looking forward
to this year and I'm excited to see where that
takes him.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Yeah, it's funny and the other guys see other guys
move on to the league and be able to us
aren't earning a paycheck for it. Talking about the wide receivers, Yes,
a lot has been said obviously about Isaiah bond and
we know about you know, some of the other guys,
the ones that have come in, but DeAndre Moore and
John J. Cook are guys who have continued to grow
(05:16):
and developed, and it's been a lot of fun for
a Quinn to work with those two guys, those returneys,
as well as the new ones coming in.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
Well. I mean, first off, I think the biggest thing
for them is just being more comfortable within the offense
and knowing what to do in certain situations. And I
think another big thing is they're starting to understand, you
know why coach sark is calling this play instead of
calling another play. And I think just their understanding of
the game has has improved a lot. And you know again,
(05:47):
I think they both got to sit behind guys like
Jay Whitten, Ad and you know Xavier, so they get
they got to see what it looks like. And no,
I think they're in a good position right now.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
There are those who continue to be amazed or at
least curious about Quinn's leadership quotient, and he was asked
how much has he changed or grown as a leader
since when he first arrived on campus a couple of
years ago.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
It's definitely a lot easier. You know, I know everybody
in the locker room. I guess I'm kind of considered
an older guy now, feels like I was just I
was just the new guy, you know, eighteen nineteen years old.
I was just talking to Colin Smith, actually he's the
locker right across from me, and I was asking him
how old he was, and you know, he said eighteen.
And you know, me saying twenty one back just doesn't
(06:38):
feel right. But no, I mean, it definitely just makes
things a whole lot easier for sure. You know, I've
feel like I've got a lot of playing time under
my belt and you know, a lot of experience, so
I get to share that with some of the younger guys,
and you know, it just makes everything a lot easier.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
Quinn is certainly more than willing to give his thoughts
on his offensive line in front of him and how
hard they've worked and how they developed. And that includes
Cam Williams, who is who had that great off season
and great spring, and Sark has talked about his development
at that right tackle. So what kind of fall camp
has Cam Williams had so far at right tackle?
Speaker 3 (07:14):
I think he's done a great job over there. You know,
me and KM have a really good relationship. He's he's
my locker mad He's right next to me. So you know,
I've I've got to know him over the past three
years and more than I even did a little. I
n him a little bit high school, but obviously we've
grown and became pretty good buddies over the past three years. So,
I mean, I think he's done a great job of
filling that role of ce Jones, and you know, I
(07:37):
think he's more than capable of of, you know, getting
picked wherever he wants to get picked at the end
of the day when it's all said and done. You know,
a guy with his size and his strength, I mean,
he's he's going to be able to do it all.
And I'm excited to see how that plays out this year.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Big shoes to vill literally and figuratively for Cam Williams,
for Christian Jones stepping in at that right tackle spot.
We'll hear more from Jahdey Baron and obviously from the
long warn quarterback Quinn you Wers next hour speaking to quarterbacks,
