Speaker 1 (00:00):
We continue here on this Wednesday afternoon on sports Radio
AM thirteen hunder the Zone.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Glad to have you with us here on a yacht
rock Wednesday.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
It's football practice Wednesday and for the Longhorns, and we've
been hearing from two of the unquestioned, without a doubt
leaders of this team, Jade Baron and Quinn Ewers, who
spoke last night after the workout. Baron, the six year senior,

(00:31):
addressed a variety of issues I mentioned. I mentioned the
first hour of the program. I mentioned the last hour
of the program as well. That Jo Day has played
all over the field in the secondary, came in as
a safety, actually came in as a corner, played corner,
one side, strong side, corner, boundary corner, free corner, played safety,

(00:58):
boundary safety, free safety, played the starback that fifth that
nickel defensive back personally, just me my own opinion, that's
where I think he's been at his best is at
the star because he helps direct a lot of the
other guys back there, and it does carry those challenges

(01:19):
to play the star, to play the nickel, you know,
when they're in the sixty back set playing the star
when they have another nickel in there, as well. So
Jade was asked about the challenges of playing that starback
or in that nickel position.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
The challenge it is, it's kind of reading like red
light and green light and those things. Just knowing when
it's running and when it's passed. It's a bit of
I wouldn't say it's a bit of a challenge, but
it's just kind of be on high alert and always
ready for something. Like I said, like Nichols, that position
where you can be in the play like every single play,
So just kind of being on high alert and what's coming.

(01:55):
Read option line screens and things like that. But a
nickel is kind of give it away. You can give
it away by just looking at the line. They'll tell
you if they're trying to break the glass to be
a run and things like that. So just kind of
paying attention to your keys and stuff like that. Sharp
dude and understands the positioning. I think that's part of
the reason why he's so good back in those particular positions.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
And played hurt a lot last year.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
I will never forget, and I think a long long
run fans will never forget what he did in the
second half of the game at Houston last year, they
were already down. They were already guys that were already hurt,
and we were told before the game and it was
the plan, and Sark told me as well, he said,
we are not going to play Shade unless we absolutely
have to. So he didn't play the first half, but

(02:46):
there were injuries right.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Before the half or early third quarter.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
And here he came and played well despite being banged up.
He's he's really a unique guy. And you know all
of those injuries that have happened both to him and
the injuries around. He was asked, how does he make
sure not to let all of that from the injury
file affect his play?

Speaker 3 (03:10):
Uh, just knowing, just knowing the guys that we have,
uh se four going down with the injury. He's a leader.
Whether he was going to play or not, he's a leader,
and I know he's gonna lead those guys.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
I know Coach Choice is still going to lead those guys.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
And I know Blue he's came along the way and
he's gonna lead those guys maturity level to to be
better on and off the field.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
So I just know, I just.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
Know the guys that we have to to be able
to lead to lead one another is going to be
tremendous and that's the key piece. And we have a
lot of guys on the team that's just going to
help those young guys get molded in into the into
the system and just trusting the processing and trusting coach
choices planning.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
Yeah, you know, talking about Coach Choice's plan that that
that's of course on the offensive side with regard to
the running backs as well. Uh, this year, they have
extra guys or some new faces on the staff, both
as coaches and also as analysts and special assistants.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
One of those would be Scotty.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
He's ultenant and he was asked about how that change
might help the way that Texas mixes its coverages this season.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
He's amazing.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
Actually I'm building a great bond with him right now,
but he's amazing, and he's teaching us. He's teaching us
a lot of different tools to use. You know, coaches
here and they never want us to play like robots.
So he's just giving us more tools that I've learned
from over the years, some coach Joseph, and he's just
helping us put in our toolbox and teaching us and
how to be more efficient and things like that, and

(04:37):
efficient and our drops and our zone drops and efficient
on how to get off blocks and things like that
and efficient and just seeing the runs and the run
games and watching it. I can check my gap can
change and stuff like that. So just just kind of
just make make sure and we're more technical and the
things that we do.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
Yeah, the official title for Scotty Haesulton is a special
Assistant to the head coach on defense. Remember Gary Patterson
have that title when he was there at Texas as well.
Uh Okay, A defensive backs job, as we know, is
to limit what the offense can do, and in specific

(05:15):
the wide receivers as well. And so Johnny Baron was
asked which wide receivers run the cleanest routes and who
is the best really at being able to still make
the catch or have a shot to it when there
is contested coverage.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
I would say, just to speak on the whole core
of the group, it's like any of those cats that
can move, they're off.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
They all improved.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
But I would to hit on somebody Silas he makes
strong catches. He's a heck of a ball player. And
yeah he may be little, but he has some heart. Yeah,
he has a lot of heart to him. I love
Silace and and routes.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
They all have.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
They all they all run routes differently, and they all
have different speeds and quickness and when to turn it
on and when to turn it off. But I've been
loving Demos Demo's performance and how he's been running his
routes and things like that. And now he's picked it
up and he's behind j Witz, So he learned a
lot on being that player if you need a block,
He's he's been stepping up into blocking and run game
and things like that and on the perimeters. So I'll

(06:14):
say those two guys as of right now.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
Demo BEINGI meaning DeAndre Moore. But you heard him talk
about how the you know, the different guys can run
some really good routes.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
John Tay Cook is another one of those guys.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
Matthew Golden obviously, you know guys who can make a
difference as wide receivers Isaiah Bond clearly, and so it's
it's gonna be fun to continue to watch those guys.
Now when you're in the secondary, you're looking forward to
seeing what the guys in the down lineman position can

(06:52):
do to make your job a little easier if they
are harassing the quarterback. Obviously, sacks are fabulous if you
get him, but we've heard and we've heard Pete quick
Kowski say, it's not always just about getting sacks. Yeah,
you'd like to have them, but in today's day and
age of quicker release, quicker snap counts, and quick offensive

(07:15):
the getting quarterback sacks might not be as if not
as high a priority. It's more realistic priority that what
you want to do is be disruptive, put them under pressure, harry.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
Them, harassed them a little bit.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
Well, that starts with the dal lineman clearly, and guys
in the linebacking corps and the secondary can see that.
So Johnny Barron was asked what has he seen from
the pass rush this season as they continue to develop
here in training camp.

Speaker 3 (07:44):
Most definitely, always having a good pass for us helps
as in the back end, it helps up the timing
of everything. You know, routes now nowadays is based off
landmarks and timing of the receiver's routes. So they're the
pressure they've been bringing in. And then the leadership for
Currell and Vernon ac of the leadership of the group,
they've been having control in that room.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Is benjaminous Horse. Yeah, last quick one, go ahead, Kirk.
Today is one of the Thorpe Award A goal for you.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
Hey, we'll get to that. We'll get to Kirk Bowles
question in a moment. What I was saying is you
heard him say Ac obviously offered Collins, Baron Surrell. He
talked about the other defensive lineman, Vernon Broughton. He mentioned
those interior defensive linemen and what they can do to
try to make it as well. Okay, that final question
you heard John Bianco Handles the media relations there for

(08:31):
football was.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
Opening door.

Speaker 1 (08:34):
It was a zoom audio and we mentioned this that
they had zoom audio because it was finishing kind of
late last night, and we've talked about the you know,
the also making sure that they didn't cause any problems
or let's just say, more difficult situations for medi you're
trying to come in if there's a concert or something

(08:54):
going on at Moody Center.

Speaker 2 (08:56):
So they did it as a zoom last night.

Speaker 1 (08:59):
And so the question that Kirk Bowles was about to
ask Joddy Baron was about the Thorpe Award. You've heard
about several of these guys being on preseason award watch list,
and it makes sense. Both c. J. Baxter and Jane
Blue were on the Doak Walker Award watch list. Obviously
Baxter will come off of that list now that he's

(09:20):
out for the season, but Blue is on that.

Speaker 2 (09:24):
Also.

Speaker 1 (09:26):
Amari Nyblack was on the John mcke Award watch list
if guys for the Outland the Buttkus Award where Anthony
Hill was mentioned, and Johnny Barron is on the watch
list for the Thorpe Award. So is winning the Thorpe Award,
which has been won by long ones in the past.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
You think about the National Championship team.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
Michael Hoff won that and he's now a special assistant,
he's on staff.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
The next year Aaron Ross won it. So the Thorpe
Award is a goal for for a lot of guys.
Is it a goal for Jade Baron?

Speaker 3 (10:03):
It'd be amazing to win any award, But the main
goal is we're trying to worry about Colorado State right now,
and I take care.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
So he didn't even say worry about winning a conference
championship or a national championship. Colorado State so they'll be
the first up obviously when they play them coming up
seveneen days. Seventeen days from today is when Texas will
open up the season on the thirty first Saturday afternoon

(10:31):
too thirty kickoff.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
Yep, it'll be hot, we know it. It's gonna be hot.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
Even if it was five or six or even seven
o'clock he had cool off loads. It'll be hot if
it's eleven AM, and it'll build toward the heat of
the day. But that is television wanting them on that,
so they'll be on a two thirty in the afternoon.
Our coverage here on sports Radio AM thirteen under the
Zone will begin with our long Orange Game Day coverage

(10:57):
from Bevo Boulevard over in the Winship Circle area at
eleven thirty Saturday morning. Cameron Parker along with my Cardball
Harge and Mark Henry teaming up the Triumvirate to bring
you the pregame coverage from down on Beavo Boulevard, and
that'll start at eleven thirty in the morning. Our network

(11:18):
coverage begins at one thirty in the afternoon, and the
kickoff is at two thirty. So it's seventeen days away
and we're getting closer and closer to that. All right,
Up next we're gonna hear from Quinn you or some
more comments from the Longhorne quarterback when we continue on
sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
