Speaker 1 (00:00):
Longhorns will be on the field before tomorrow night. They've
got another scrimmage inside of DKR Texas Memorial Stadium, And
following the practice yesterday, a couple of long Horn players,
veteran safety Michael Taff and the preseason All American left
tackle Kelvin Banks, visited with the media. Is interesting in
(00:22):
talking about Michael Taff or Mookie as a lot of
his teammates to I remember Todd Dodge calling him Mookie
when he was playing for him at Westlake and the connection.
Teammates have connections through various and sindar things. Sometimes it's
just they arrived on campus at the same time. Sometimes
it's because they have a mutual friend or a mutual
(00:43):
position coach or something like that. And then there's the
local angle. Taff's a Westlake product, Lecuba is from LBJ.
That's Andrew mccubo transferred in from Clemson, and then Jade
Baron of course from Conley. So they've known each other
a bit. In fact, Taff was asked, how long has
he known these other two guys.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah, So we started training with our dB trainer in
the Austin area. Band performance should I want to say
sophomore year of high school. But I think John an
and uh Andrew trained with them, uh before I even
was there. So, but when it was when it was
with me, it was sophomore year of high school, and
then COVID hit and so we were there every single day.
(01:24):
There was really nothing to do besides work out, eat
and sleep and play Fortnite during COVID, so that was
what we were doing. So we were we were training
every single day, us three, a couple other guys that
are playing D one and it was just so fun.
Our bond kind of started there. But once we all
three got back together here this winter, we all we
(01:45):
knew what it was. We're so excited to be together.
It's just it's so fun. I can't wait for our
journey to start. When you were in college at Texas,
did you play Fortnite? Were you in the Fortnite Mm? Yeah,
I think it. It was really big freshman's sophomore year.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
Yeah, that's what he was kind of talking about, especially
for them freshman sophomore year which went into the pandemic.
He said, there wasn't much to do. You'd go and
train and then go back and play Fortnite because there
wasn't an awful lot, even pre pandemic times. A lot
of guys are remember vividly conversations with Hank Carter, the
head coach of Lake Travis, about how many of his
(02:25):
guys were in the Fortnite. He said, yeah, I had
to make sure they're you know, concentrating on what they're doing.
Start too right, Yeah, and Sark have a comment about it. Yeah,
last year been talking about Quinn yours and was like, hey,
are you studying film or are you playing Fortnite? That's true.
One guy who's been taking this football seriously, and we've
(02:46):
heard quite a few reports on him as Silas Bolden,
the Oregon State transfer, how he so dialed in and
so enthusiastic and so energetic, so taff and having to
go up against him on the field, but just watching
Bolden was asked what he has seen from the Oregon
State transfer.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
He's a monster, do it all, selfless guy. Whatever he
needs to to do, whatever the coaches need him to do,
he's gonna do it. And I'm sure y'all heard the speed,
the hands, the routes, but I want to mention that
how selfless of a player he is. I told him
that the other day, I was like, dude, never lose that.
(03:22):
I've never seen somebody that's, you know, got so much hype,
but but not let that hype get to him and
just put his head down and grind. He's a he's
a beast. All respect to Silas.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Yeah, it's really kind of echoing a lot of things
a lot of folks have said about Silas Boulden, about
what he has done and what he's meant since he
is coming in one of the areas where the defense
wanted to be better. We heard Pete Kwakowski talk about
it when when he did his media availability a couple
(03:56):
of weeks back, and that was tackling and how he
saw improvement in tackling in the spring. Spring Bowl is
one thing, training campus another, and then obviously the season
is a is something under itself. But uh, he said
he was pleased with that. And Taff was asked about
the secondary and how hard they've worked on tackling.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Yeah, well, we've we've had presentations about tackling with the coaches,
but also player led and just understanding that if we can,
if we can get to a point as a defense
as a whole, but most importantly as a back end
to where it's catch tackle. Sometimes it doesn't have to
be pick, it doesn't have to be PBu it can
be catch tackle. Then the amount of yards that we're
(04:38):
giving up is like less by drastic amount, and so
that's the most important thing is Yeah, the yards passing looks,
you know, crazy when when you look at the yards
sometimes when when quarterbacks have really good games. But if
you look at it really film, play by play and
you see the mistackles, you see those, that's where the
(04:59):
yards come from. And so if we can eliminate one
mistackle on a slant turning into a fifty yard touchdown,
then we're gonna be a really good defense. So we're
we're hammering. You know how important it is to make
those open field tackles. It's really hard to make open
field tackles. But if we can master that, we can
get one step better every day, then we're going to
be a pretty good back end.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Yeah, that's a good way to describe it for sure. Meanwhile,
on the offensive side of the football, you have Calvin
Banks who is a preseason All American. And Calvin also
we didn't go over this yesterday. I was going to
I was gonna kind of spotlight it a little bit
to David. Yesterday, ESPN came out with its top one
(05:40):
hundred college football players individual players. Calvin Banks is number
nine on the list, so he's a top ten college
football player number nine for him, and he was asked,
do you feel like you deserve to be ranked in
that ESPN Time ten players? If so, I'll come and
(06:03):
are there things that you can get better at?
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Honestly, just me just saying that, just me having a
focus on what I'm doing now, because obviously it's a
it's a great accomplishment. I'm very blessed that they think
of me that way as a how they player like that.
But honestly, I just look at that and I see
it and it kind of makes me want to work
harder because nothing is, nothing is given to say you everything.
(06:25):
You have to work for everything. You have to go
out every day and go to practice and work on
little things, work on different techniques you have to do.
So just just keeping my mind steady and just knowing
I have more work to do.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
Well, that's one thing. Now. The requisite Silas Bolden question.
Everybody's asked about silos Bolden, How silus, what's he doing
what's he entergy So obviously no exception the rule. Gallen
Banks was going to be asked about the organ State transfer.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
Solace is an awesome teammate obviously, like like any other
guy who comes in is gonna take a while and
open up. But once once he once he's opened up,
he's cool, guys, He's energetic, he's awesome, He's he's willing
to do anything for the team on the football field
and off the field. And from what I see, so
he's he's a great guy.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
Okay, all right, U. And then the other guy who's
looked at is being an anchor on that offense in
front of Jake Majors, And he was asked how he
would describe Jake Majors what he brings to the locker
room and what he takes to the field.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
Jake, Jake brings so much to the field and locker
room on the field aspect leadership, knowing where girls have
to be, helping him out when they mess up, trying
to help mistakes, and even in the locker room and
off the field, he's making sure guys is like together,
always make sure we talk. Even sometimes there'll be times
where we'll well we'll be just sitting around and not
(07:44):
talking to He'll just he'll just start up conversations and
trying to get guys just just talk to each other,
no matter if you barely talk to him or not.
And what was the second question?
Speaker 1 (07:52):
Again, We'll get to the other question afterwards, but that
one was mainly about Jake Man. What we're gonna get
to next is a Friday edition of Inconceivable. That's next
when we continue on sports Radio AM thirteen under the
Zone in the iHeartRadio app.
