Speaker 1 (00:00):
And I've been talking about this for a few weeks
because my dear wife really really wanted to see Barry
Manilo because she had never seen Barry Manieloe in concert before.
And you know I did back in my concert ending
days I worked to Barry Manilow show. Not a big

(00:20):
Barry Manila fan, I'm not, but don't have anything against
him either. I mean, he's one of the iconic musical
singer songwriters, certainly of this generation. And he wrote he
was a jingle writer before he got into the pop music.
You know, you remember the old McDonald's tune. It predated

(00:43):
your time on this planet. But you deserve a break
today for McDonald's, you deserve a break, he wrote that.
He wrote that he was a jingle writer for a while,
but anyway, obviously a mega star sing a songwriter and
is on his farewell tour. So Linda really wanted to

(01:06):
go and given that, and I told this story last week.
There are many many concerts since we got together in
twenty eighteen. There were many many shows I was really
interested in seeing, and she not only agreed to go
with me, she enthusiastically and then really liked the selections.

(01:29):
There were some that kind of surprised her. She didn't
know an awful lot of Bob Seeker stuff but really
liked it. Didn't know an awful lot of aer clapt
and stuff, but really love when listen. She didn't she wouldn't.
She wouldn't have heavy duty rocker like that, you know.
And then when I unveiled herb Albert, but she really
liked it. And then of course Steely Dan she knew,

(01:50):
and Eagles and was written Doobie Brothers. I mean, all
of these, but they were always my suggestions for shows
that I had wanted to see. So when she came
Fallard with a suggestion about wanting to go see barry Man,
she really wanted to go. And then I thought, I thought, okay,
all right, it'll be kind of a like a historical marker.

(02:10):
It's his last I'll do. So I got the tickets
for us. My poor wife now cannot go. She has
been under the weather. Went to doctor today. They believe
it's probably bronchitis or something like that, but she's been
running some fevers and so they gave her some medicine
and hopefully that'll knock it out.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
They're run some more tests, but she can't go.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
So I'm not going to see Barry Manilow by myself.
I'm telling you that right now. I'm not.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
And I don't think you have any interest in seeing
Berry man No, I didn't think so, I don't. He's
actually recovering COVID. Looks like he had the reschedule his
last three shows and he's resuming his normal true dates
today at the Moody Center. Seeing if this could have
been one of the ones, then one that might have
been okay, but then you would have had to probably

(03:03):
see him right on the re but it may be
able to conflict within Yeah, yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Or Linda could have gone with somebody else like she
did Billy Joel, and I couldn't do it because of basketball.
Had those tickets of Jerry World for Billy Joel and
Stevie Niggs. And she took a friend to hers who
was a big Billy Joel fan. That was another thing.
And and Linda had never seen Billy Joel. She gave
me tickets to Billy Joel Fenway Park. Obviously her we went. Uh,

(03:30):
so she's she's always been great about that sort of thing.
So what was the least I could do? And and Unfortunately,
that's not going to work out that. However, I did
surprise her with tickets. We're going to go see Joni
Mitchell at the Hollywood Bowl in October with Joni Mitchell
is one of her all time musical favorites. So there,
so there was something. Hopefully she's okay and Jonie's okay

(03:52):
and they'll be able to you know, we'll be able
to go to that show.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
He did reschedule his San Antonio show to the day
before Texas open their twenty twenty four football season. He
also has a residency in Las Vegas, and we'll be
there when Texas basketball opens their season. So there's two
more chances, right, there's two more chances if you and
Linda really really want to see him. For someone who's

(04:15):
retiring on his last toys at eighty pretty busy. He's
got eighty six concerts this year. Eighty six. That's a lot.
It's a lot, no doubt about it. Hey, I wanted
to get to a couple of baseball things. I mentioned
that the power rankings. We've talked about them all season long,
and normally I've referred to the ones from MLB dot Com,

(04:36):
but the ones from I read several and the ones
from CBS Sports really struck me this week because they
were talking about how wildcard races and division races are
starting to affect the power rankings. In fact, the title
of the article by Matt Snyder was MLB Power Rankings,
Bring on the division chaos. And so he runs down

(04:59):
the AI East the al Central cam. Here's what it
says about the AO West. And like I said, this
had a little wrinkle in it said the Astros started
twelve and twenty four. The World Series champion Rangers are
still nursing that hangover. Apparently, the Mariners had a ten
game lead at one point. Might this be the year
the Mariners take back the aos for the first time

(05:21):
since two thousand and one. Well, since June nineteenth, the
Astros have turned a ten game deficit into a four
game lead the second bet. Now here's the real wrinkle.
We read that line again. Since June nineteenth, the Astros
have turned a ten game deficit into a four game
the lead. Now, listen to this.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
In that time, the second best team in the division
has been the A's. In that time, the third best
team has been the troutless Angels. That doesn't bode well
for the Mariners. The Rangers are cooked, says Matt Snutder.
Think about that. In the time that the Astros flipped

(06:05):
it from a ten game deficit in the American League
West to a four game lead, the second best team
in the division during that time, since June nineteenth to
right now August nineteenth sixty days has been the Oakland
A's and the third best team in the division has
been the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. It hasn't been

(06:26):
the Mariners, and it certainly hadn't been the Rangers. That
was the thing that just leaped off the page at me.
There are three games left between the Mariners and Astros
in Houston. It's a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, September twenty third
through the twenty fifth. He said, I fear those games
won't matter. Level of fun he has a level of fun,
quoting he said, it isn't there yet, but my hunch

(06:48):
is this becomes a bore. The Mariners haven't been good
for two months, while the Astros have played at a
full season one hundred and two win pace since that
dreadful start.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
So I'm not telling you anything that you didn't know.
And others didn't know. But that's the thing that just
leaked off the page. Man and I knew the A's
had been better since the All Star Break. What I
didn't know was in the past two calendar months, from
June nineteenth to today August nineteenth, they've been the second
best team in the division, and the Angels the third best,

(07:22):
with the Mariners and the Rangers following up.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
And while the Mariners are still in the wildcard chase
and they're only four back in the West, they're leaking,
and the Rangers, of course have taken on a lot
of water, so it's not voting well for them.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
Sale West might be the worst division in baseball, just
might be. You got the three of the four worst
teams in the AL and then the Astros, who currently
lead the AL West, have the lowest amount of wins
out of any divisional leader in baseball. Of course, I
say that, and they'll go to their what twentieth straight ALCS.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
Yeah right, Well, you know, if not for the Brewers,
I'd say the worst would be the Nation League Central.
But the Brewers are the Bruis only a game back
or a half game back of the Dodgers, and Phillies,
who have the best record in all of baseball, and
the Yankees and Orioles, they're all right there within a
half game to one game to like. Yet the Padres

(08:24):
and Diamondbacks have been red red hot and they're keeping
the heat on, so it's gonna be a lot of
fun to watch these races down the stretch. We'll be
back to wrap up today's program here on sports Radio
AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
