Speaker 1 (00:00):
Auto yacht Rock Wednesday here on sports Radio AM thirteen
under the zone. My name is Craig Way. Glad to
have you with us, Cameron Parker alongside. As well, as
I mentioned, we have the the text line open as
well as certainly the talk back feature if you want
(00:20):
to do that, and you access that via the iHeartRadio
app that's free, and then go to AM thirteen under
the zone. Press little red button there and you can
leave his message or you can text the program. You
text the word Texas, follow out your question or comment
a he won five to three zero Standard messaging and
data rates may apply. Here's a couple of questions on
the text line. Someone asked your thoughts about Bill Land retiring.
(00:42):
I'll miss him as the Spurs play by play guy,
but also excited for Dan Weiss's full time opportunity, assuming
he's the one who replaces Bill.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
That that Dan's the guy yet, but I don't not
know that either. I don't know that. All the announcement
did come down today, our good friend Bill Land, and
we'll get him on the program here going into his
final season. He's announced that this will be his final
season coming up the twenty twenty four twenty five season,
(01:14):
so this.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Will be his last one.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
I know Bill a long time, even before he was
doing the Spurs when Bill Bill's originally from Tulsa, and
he had done television up there and radio up there
and was living in the Dallas Fort Worth here when
I got to know him, was doing the High School
show and he was doing Bill was also doing Big
(01:39):
twelve Showcase, the TV show and one funny story. Bill
would laugh at this today. It was one of those years,
one of those UIL realignment years, just like this year,
where we would do the UIL Realignment show live because
(02:00):
use the word the release would not go out until
the morning of like you know, February first, at nine
o'clock in the morning. However, in order to prepare the
folks at Fox Southwest for to have all the graphics
ready because you think about it, when you're talking about,
(02:20):
you know, twelve hundred schools and you've got to get
them all loaded and those names loaded in. So it
had to be done in advance, which meant that the crew,
the stack crew, the graphics crew had to be kept
in complete secrecy to do this. Word could not get
out and they've always done a really really good job
(02:43):
of that. Everybody understands it. That word cannot get out.
The reason why is because it can compromise scheduling. If say,
a coach or coaches or school or schools or to
find out the realignment they had a time and they
might already start scheduling things and it could set upset
(03:03):
the balance of all of that. So it's always been
kept under wraps. Now it's a little bit more revealing
earlier nowadays because of the number cutoff, So folks can
do the math on that and kind of figure that out,
but the exact district alignments they don't know until the
realignment itself is announced.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Well, the night.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
Before the realignment was going out, Bill happened to go
buy the Fox Sports Southwest studios. I think they were
doing an edit session or something for Big twelve showcase,
and in the other production room they were inputting all
of the schools in for the UIO realignment. Now, at
the time, Bill had two sons playing basketball at Flower
(03:46):
Mount Marcus and he just happened to notice the alignment
that came up with Marcus, and Bill didn't know, he
didn't know what a secret deal it was. He called
the coach and told, hey, d did you notice that
you guys are in the same district? But yeat his
word starts to spread like wildfire. And then and then
it was one of those deals where the cat was
(04:06):
partially let out of the bag on that. We we've
had a good laugh about that over the years. But
I certainly wish Bill well and hope that Bill Land
enjoys he says, as he says, the fourth quarter of
his life, his retirement years coming up. So yeah, and
we'll see, we'll see who becomes the new television play
by play voice Spurs Basketball. We know, of course who
(04:28):
the radio play by play voice is. That's Bill Shoning,
who will be back for his season. Then we get
a question from our man CB, who said, are you
ready for the return of Kim Maulkey to Austin In February,
The women's SEC schedule was just released. Joe Schwartz, former
walk on basketball player of Texas comes back to Austin
(04:49):
as he's on Mulkey staff. Yes, I knew that, CB,
and I'll have some details on that. The women's conference
schedule was released. A non conference schedule has not been
released yet because they were still trying to finalize a
couple of dates on that, but the conference schedule was
released and we'll go over that a little bit later on.
All right to log one football and as I mentioned,
(05:12):
Manny Mohammad getting ready for a sophomore year. Learned a
lot as a freshman, contributed a lot as a freshman,
and now expected to contribute more and to compete morey
He'll obviously be in the cornerback rotation, but fighting for
that starting job at corner as well. As he met
with the media yesterday.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Talk about the defense and as the issues. If you
could point in.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
One single reason why would do better this year would be.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
I'll say we focused on more in on the details
and uh, I mean we got our D line straight man.
I feel like we got a great I feel like
we got a great defense this year. But uh, mainly
honing in on the details. One of those details tackling
we hope for PK could Uh he's falling to talk
about want better secondary, Yes, definitely, definitely, Uh that that
(06:05):
was one of the That was one of the.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Details that we focused in on.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
Definitely tackling getting our drops right, Uh, just knowing our
opponents and uh, just playing, playing together and communicating many y'all.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
Jammy on cole anathlete. He's trying to get activated. He's
trying to get ready to Jay call Loaf here. That
just can't start.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
Uh. He's he's he's been doing good. Uh, especially to
coming in in the summer. He's caught on real fast
and he's doing well.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
That's trick to even like from the goods outside because
you know he was in the slot a lot last
year because.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
He moved around. Does he take any notes from you?
You take any notes from him? Pot something outside?
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (06:46):
Yeah, you know, we got a great coach Terry. Justph
uh me and John there are like two savvy players.
So like we just know like how to play with
each other, how to how to piggyback off of each
other each other, how to play with the safeties, how
to community with the linebackers, and just uh play play
together at the whole defense.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
So you're a student like y'all to watch your whole film.
Definitely just watching together, Yes, as a as a whole group. Oh,
we all come together and watch. What's been the hardest
part about the training camp?
Speaker 1 (07:17):
To keep the Ryan.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
I mean just like coach Shark said the standards the center,
like we've been. We know were in Texas. We know
we're gonna have to deal with the heat. We just
go out there and do it every day and compete
at the highest level.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
What's been your taking series for defensive player, you know,
compared to the last time for the last week's.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
Time, just being a great teammate.
Speaker 4 (07:43):
Uh Uh, chatting with the whole team, communicating with the
whole defense, communicating with the coaches.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
Do you find yourself more vocal this year? Kind of
being you know you're not a freshman anymore established starter. Definitely, definitely,
definitely Uh.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
And then just try to bring uh the other guys along,
like the younger guys, the freshman, try to bring them
along showing what I know and just be a bit
and a spot a few sassage before without Giobo, talk
about what we can see that in the secondary and
work today to do so far y'all season, Gilbo, heck
of a player. Heck of a player. He played a
(08:23):
big role in his defense along with everybody else. Uh,
but yeah, give up.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
He had a great training group. You mentioned the defensive line.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
You felt like their improvement is going to help you
all in the secondary as well. Could y'all as a
defense fact, can you feel that in scrimmages when the
game's live that maybe you're not covering as long as
you were a year ago?
Speaker 2 (08:43):
Uh, you could say that, you can say that I was.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Gonna what's kind of the complimentary aspect of having a
pass rush that could get to the quarterback, you know,
make your life a little bit easier there.
Speaker 4 (08:56):
I mean, yeah, with the guys you brought it in,
like Trade More and Colin Simmons, we got burying.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
We got to eat the bury Thinkley.
Speaker 4 (09:04):
Oh, those guys have been doing a great job of
getting to the football and I actually have felt that
in these past uh scrimmage.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
What you see him from?
Speaker 2 (09:12):
Gavin Holmes?
Speaker 4 (09:13):
Gavin Holmes, Man, that's my dog. Uh, gab been doing great.
Gavin been doing great and I'm ready. I'm ready to
see what he do come August thirty.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
First, what are you so much about the Solace School?
And can you just give us a break down on
how gruty is? What do you see about that? You
better not missed? He got checks. You will go to
the house. You bet not missed. Have you seen it,
as example, when someone has us to what's happening. I
(09:46):
don't really want to speak on it, but I've seen it.
I've seen it with my own eyes. You used to
word that Bernie used earlier about the standard you're that work.
Why the standard is the standard? Can you describe what's
the standard that looks like?
Speaker 4 (10:00):
I would say, play out, discipline, toughness, commitment all the time,
all the time.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
What who's a player who could surprise.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
Maybe one I defense, one offense. I don't really know.
I really don't know.
Speaker 4 (10:27):
That's a tough one. It's it's a lot of guys
that can that can be breaking out guys.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
But I really don't know. I can't even tell you
what's Kobe Blackman. That's a player? Uh, Kobe big, long, strong, physical,
can move.
Speaker 4 (10:49):
For his size and cover. Well, yeah, he had a
great Uh he had a great spring game fall cap.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
Yeah, have advice you did that, especially him being the
first year guy you went through last year.
Speaker 4 (11:03):
I just tell him to be as consistent as possible
and uh, trying to make a new mistake.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
When had the player's only meeting and the day after practice,
what did you kind of touch on and how does
it make you feel that have a QB that kind
of takes the reins like that since it was a player.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
The only media I can I can't really speak one.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
S Satanna Wilson got here in the in the summers.
Sounds like he's been a guy that's turned some heads
a little bit. What did you know about him coming
in And how's he been through fault camp?
Speaker 4 (11:41):
Uh, super athletic, has a great mind. Uh, he been
playing pretty physical too. About Warren Warren Roverson, you see
a heck of an athlete has improved tremendously. He had
(12:01):
a great bough here in great great spring.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
Also, well, yeah, it's interesting hearing the guy. He's just
a sophomore, you know, being Pepper with the questions, how
about so and so?
Speaker 2 (12:11):
How does he look? How does this guy? How does
he look?
Speaker 1 (12:14):
And Manny Muhammad just just a sophomore but a good
football player, and I believe he'll be a factor this year.
By the way, I did want to correct one thing.
Bill Land's retirement is effective as of now, so there
will be a new Spurs television play by play voice
this coming season this fall. So I just want to
make sure that said that properly and not incorrectly. There
(12:38):
and again We're wishing Bill all the best as he
steps away from the mic. All right, coming up next,
we will bring you Inconceivable for a Wednesday afternoon right
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone and
the iHeart Radio app.
