Speaker 1 (00:00):
Final hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred Zone Craig Way and the producer Cameron Parker
alongside as well. Do you have another update for us
on the FedEx Cup in Castle Pines, Colorado, second of
the three final weekends of the PGA season.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Still Adam Scott in front, thirteen under, Keegan Bradley now
just three shots back. He's still continuing his back nine
ten under Oberg and eight hundred Alex Noran Scotty Scheffler
still just at one under. He's got two holes left
to play on the day. But as we said, he's
in He's in good He's in a good spot right now,
(00:41):
will most likely be in first place entering next week's
Tour Championship. As Scottie s, Sheffley's one just about anything
worth meaningful, anything that's meaningful on the PGA Tour in.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
His career except for the Fetx Cup Championship.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
So a good week now week and he can, uh,
you know, cross that off the list and now focus on,
uh maybe getting another major outside of Augusta.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
Okay, yeah, we'll see, uh how how well that that
goes forward? The uh I know that that even for
a guy who follows this particular game, in this particular
league and this particular sport as closely as you do.
Even with all that in mind, your mind probably is
(01:30):
not much on the NBA these days, right.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
I mean, you know, right now, we're kind of in
a bit of a of a dead period after the Olympics,
not a lot of not a lot of news coming out.
I mean, they did release the NBA schedules I think
last week, but there's not really much to follow, I
would say.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
I mean preseason will start.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
October, so we're about two months away from the season
starting to ramp up here.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
Uh. The reason why I brought that up, So did
you did you take a look at the ESPN plus
summer projects for the coming NBA season? At number one,
who will win the Eastern Conference Finals? Who do you
think that they picked? When the East Boston Celtics overwhelmingly
ninety seven points, Philadelphia second thirty nine, the Knicks thirty eight,
(02:16):
the Bucks thirteen in Cleveland two Western Conference, let me
sink my pick is OKAYC I'm guessing they're going to
go either okay See or Minnesota.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
My friend, They're going with your team. Love it.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
They've got Oklahoma City and under up and it's pretty overwhelming.
Eighty three points to Minnesota at forty eight, the Mavericks
start at twenty nine, the Nuggets at eighteen, the Sons
at eight points, and the Lakers got two points out
of that winter in the final, they do have the
Celtics overwhelmingly, they got the thunder second. Philadelphia picked up
(02:57):
eighteen points to win the whole thing. They year Denver thirteen,
the Bucks, Nicks nine each, and the Maverick six points.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
A lot of faith in Philadelphia. Who has joelan beat
and Paul George. But Paul George hasn't played in the
conference finals since twenty twenty was that COVID year and
once before that, and what like with the Pacers against
the Lebron's heat MB we all know about his playoffs struggles.
(03:27):
So a lot of faith in Philadelphia, a lot of
people sleeping on Milwaukee. People forget at one point Attatakupa
was the best player in the world. Now he hasn't
been healthy in the playoffs, but they still have Damian Lillard.
They made some good moves this season in the offseason.
That's a sleeping team. Then also in the West Denver Nuggets.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
I mean, I.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Know they had their troubles in the playoffs last season,
but they still had the best player in the world.
So Bucks Nuggets get getting some disrespect.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
Here's a pro football note. This just came down a
little while ago. The Pro Football All of Fame has
announced a series of changes to its annual selection process.
It also, I think this is pretty significant. They are
reducing the number of years on the waiting period for coaches.
(04:18):
Now players, you know, it's five years like it is
Major League Baseball, but for coaches it's gone from five
years to one year. So with the with the waiting
period reduced from five years to one year, is there
any doubt in your mind who's going to go in
in twenty twenty six?
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Twenty twenty six, So if McCarthy's fired this year, well
he'll be Belichick.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
Yeah, yeah, he could go in there. He could go
in as soon as twenty twenty six. Yep, yep, absolutely,
especially Belichick winds up coaching still, you know, if he
winds up.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
Back in it, so could he be inducted in twenty
twenty five.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
No, the selection process is already underway, presumably indicating that
Belichick won't be eligible for next summer's induction, according to
Pro Football Talk and other reports.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
So need be part?
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Can it be part of the discussions for twenty twenty
six and then end up getting hired by a team,
and you can be in a discussion and then also
get inducted while also being the head coach? Could that
actually happen or would they postponent because he got another job?
Speaker 1 (05:29):
Well, here's what they say. Other revisions to the bylaws
announced today included the separation of the coach and contributor categories,
and created two new screening committees, one for modern era
players and one for seniors to help trim the list
of nominees down to fifty candidates each before they go
to the official selection committee, because you know, they really
(05:49):
kind of the ballots got choked with names the last
several years, which kind of makes sense because they have
so many different positions in football, so it's different than
baseball or basketball, or any other Hall of Fame for
that matter. So they said that. The President and CEO
Jim Porter, said, the first pillar of the mission statement.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
Will be to honor the greatest of the game.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
One important way to do that is through an annual
review of the selection process and the people involved in it.
So I would say this, if his name is in
the mix for being a candidate and then he gets
hired before the voting process is completed, then his name
(06:36):
he will automatically be disqualified from being eligible.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
Now what would be interesting to your point is if.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
He's an ount, say, you know, next year at the
Pro Bowl or whatever, that he's in and he does
the whole thing and he's there with everybody else, and
then in the off season he gets hired. At that point,
I think they have to let him in if he's
already been voted in.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
Sara McCarthy this year, Jerry puts simmere as the head
coach for a year, and then Belichick.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
Okay, yeah, right, right, and then McCarthy goes into the Hall.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Of Fame, right, I mean one super Bowl? What's his
what's his overall? Yeah, but that's an interesting, interesting argument.
I mean, yep, not every coach who has won a
Super Bowl is in the Hall of Fame, right, I'm guessing.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
Uh, not not every that is correct. Not every coach
who has won a Super Bowl is in the Hall
of Fame. I'm pretty sure. Thinking back through it. The
coaches of Super Bowl winners one, two, three, and four.
(07:43):
I don't think Don McCafferty, the coach the Colts in
Super Bowl five there, he's not in there, obviously. Pete
Carroll is not in yet. Belichick's not in yet. Sean
mcvay's not in yet. Dig for meals in right, he's in.
He coached the Rams when they won that other Super Bowl.
(08:05):
I don't see him on the Hall of Fame website list.
I thought he was in. Okay, all right, one other
football not before we get to the break. Zay Jones
of Austin Hot suspended.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
He is not sh Yeah, I thought I thought he
was in there. Frustrating.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
Zay Jones suspended without pay for the first five games
of the season, the Cardinals wide receiver violating the NFL's
personal conduct policy. This stems from the arrest back on
November thirteenth, when he was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery
after an argument with the mother of his child allegedly
resulted in an injury to her neck. So he is
(08:41):
out for the first five games of the season.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
You said, when you're talking about Ray Flaherty was the
one that.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
Ray Flaherty is an old coach, coached the Giants, I
think in Washington, I think when they won back in
the thirties. But you know, I mean super Bowl one
and two is Lombardi three. As we viewed Bank four's
Hank Stram, Like I said, McCafferty's not in. Landry for six,
Shula for seven and eight, Nole for nine and ten,
(09:09):
Madden for eleven, Nole for or Landry for twelve, Noel
for thirteen and fourteen. Tom Flores is in, isn't he
the coach of the Raiders. Coach of the Raiders. He
won two Super Bowls, super Bowl fifteen and Super Bowl eighteen.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Let's see him on this list. He was. He also
a player, but yeah, see him. Okay, he's down there. Yeah, yep, Okay,
he's on there.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
Obviously, so Don Coriel with the Cardinals and Chargers, who
he don't won the Super Bowl, never won. He's on
there for Meal, Tom Flores in twenty twenty one, Jimmy Johnson,
of course, Bill Cower twenty, Dongee, Parcells, Madden, Fritz Pollard,
Hank's player, all right, George Allen, Marv Levy, Don Shula,
(09:54):
Joe Gibbs, Bud Grant, Bill Wash, Chuck Nole, Al Davis,
Tom Landry, Sid Gilman, Fawn's, Toffy Lehman's, web, U Bank,
Ray Flaherty, Lombardi, Greasy, Neil, Wayne Millner, Joe Stidahar Stidahar,
Carsela rams In fifty one, Rhaul Brown, Steve Owen, Walt Keasley,
(10:15):
Guy Chamberlain, Jimmy Conzelman, Jim Thorpe, Ernie Nevers, Early Lambeau,
George Tallis, Burt Bell.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
Those are the coaches.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
There's a lot of coaches you named out of that
group that never won a Super Bowl. Now, many of
them predated the Super Bowl, okay, and there are several
in there that never even won an.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
NFL championship before the Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
But guys like Curly Lambeau from lambeau Field his name
obviously he's he's in their Webut Brent Bank, you mentioned
he was the coach of the Jets when Joe Namath quarterback.
Then I mean there's there's there's several coaches who hit
their high watermark. All right, we need to break when
we come back, Well, visit Greg Tepper, Dave Campbells. Texas
Football Magazine will continue on Sports radio AM thirteen under
the zone.
