Speaker 1 (00:06):
It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame Broadcasting Craig Way.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
It's a long Horns Monday. So we're glad to have
you with us on this Longhorns Monday. And you get
an opportunity to win a pair of tickets to Saturday's
season opener against the Colorado State Rams. And I'm going
(00:38):
to tell you how you can do it, and and
then after I tell you how you do it, you
do your part of it, and then by the end
of the show we'll tell you who is a winner.
We'll tell you about that. That's how that works. So
so that's that's how we'll That's how we'll do it.
So this is the way it works. We have, as
(01:02):
you know, a system called talkback. It's really cool. We
used it when we gave away all of the magazines
for Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. We gave away a
lot of tickets by doing it, or excuse me, gave
away a lot of magazines by doing the talkback system.
(01:23):
So that's how we're going to do it again. And
the way this works is if you don't already have
the iHeartRadio app downloaded on your phone. It's really easy
to do. It's free, doesn't cost anything. You just take
your iPhone or Android, whatever you've got your smartphone, and
you download the iHeartRadio app. Once you have it downloaded,
(01:45):
and for those of you already have it downloaded, you
go to AM thirteen hundred the zone. You just pop
that in. It comes up. There's two buttons there. There's
a white button and a red button. The white button
you push if you just want to listen to the program.
To participate in any contesting we do, you have to
use the talkback feature and that's the red button. It has
a little white microphone inside of it. So you push
that red button and then you leave us a message,
(02:06):
and you can't go over thirty seconds.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
It'll cut you off.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
So here's how this contest is going to work this
week for these tickets, a pair of tickets for the
Colorado State game. This is how this works today, today only.
This is how it's going to work. You leave us
a message on the talk back and remember it has
to be less than thirty seconds. But in that just
(02:29):
under thirty seconds, I want you to tell me about
the first long worn football game you ever attended and
what you remember about it. And that's pretty simple, really,
it's your own personal experience. You tell me about your
first long Worn football game that you attended at DKR
(02:50):
Texas Memorial Stadium and what you remember about it. And
the best story out of that is going to win
a pair of tickets. But don't go over thirty seconds.
If you go for thirty seconds, to cut you off
and you're disqualified, it's like going over on the showcase
on the price is right, can go over, So don't
go over thirty. Keep it inside at thirty. But tell
(03:12):
me everything you can tell me about the first Long
Worn football game you attended at home at dk R
Texas Memorial Stadium.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
So there you go. That's that's how you do it.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Use the talk back feature to reach It's all right,
let's get right to Long Worn's head coach Steve Sarkeesian,
and this is from the news conference. Start off with
his opening comments there to open up the news conference.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Cool things happen in Saturday.
Speaker 4 (03:35):
What an exciting time anytime you're kicking off a football season.
You can kind of feel the excitement in the air.
You know, we had the gone to Texas event last
night with President Hartzel right there at the tower and
over nine thousand incoming freshmen there and I think the
you know, the largest incoming freshman class or something.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
So it's really cool, you know, the fact.
Speaker 4 (03:56):
That season tickets are sold out again, Like I said,
the buzz on campus. I always I love game days,
even when we even first start at the hotel.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
But I love the fact of like walking down.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
Beevi Boulevard and seeing everybody there and seeing the parents
of our players and the excitement they have in their
eyes all the way through pregame. That that that stuff
is super cool, you know. I know, there's a lot
of really cool things that are happening this season. Obviously
the one hundredth year anniversary of d k R, which
is a tremendous honor to be the head coach to
play in the hundred season here when you think about
(04:31):
all the great teams and the great players and the
great coaches and the moments that have occurred in the stadium.
We have an opportunity Saturday to honor our entire athletic
department for the Director's Cup. We have an opportunity to
honor all the national championship champions this season, and then
we also have an opportunity to honor all the Olympians
from Paris this past summer. So a lot of cool
(04:53):
things happen in Saturday. But the coolest thing is we
get to play football again, and we're excited for it.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
We've got a very tough opponent.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
Coach Norvel has done a really good job of building
that program back up at Colorado State. They were they
were you know, I know that five and seven last year,
but there was a lot of close games that could
have went either way. They've got a very explosive offense
that likes to throw the ball around, a dynamic receiver
uh in in Tory Horton as well as him being
a kick returner, a veteran offensive line with a couple
(05:23):
of grad transfers, a very veteran UH defense with two
really good safeties you know, all conference safeties that have
played a lot of football, and a very intricate special
teams unit, very well coached team.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
They tax you mentally as well as tax you physically.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
UH.
Speaker 4 (05:39):
And this is going to take a great week of
preparation from our players, not only physically but mentally because
they're going to get challenged in all three phases.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
Which leads us into the first question for sarka after that,
what specific things, uh does a coach look for in
the first week of a season? Obviously other than the
obvious the win, but what a sark want to see
out of his team in week one?
Speaker 4 (06:06):
Yeah, you know, I think one of the one of
the keys is, you know, you try to minimize the
self inflicted wounds in week one and what are those
false starts, illegal formations defensive you know, lining up in
the neutral zone, jumping off sides. You try to minimize
the penalties and the special teams game right, the blocks
in the backs, the holds, you try to minimize the
(06:29):
substitution errors. You know, you want to have eleven guys
on the field. You don't want to get stuck with
twelve or ten and having to waste timeouts. Naturally, you
want to tackle as best you can. You know, we
try to tackle to get our guys ready, but you
can never do it enough. But to take care of
both sides, this is what you have to do. So
you're you're always looking for how are we tackling or
(06:50):
we bringing our feet And then for me, The biggest
thing that I'm looking for now more than ever is
our ability to play a lot of players, especially in
the first half of the game. And you know, I know,
you know, like we have a two deep, when in
reality our ones are our twos and our twos are
our ones. And so getting all those guys involved in
(07:10):
the game and seeing the comfort level, maybe if some
of our younger players, then getting them more comfortable as
the game goes on, I think is important for us
as well.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
All right, Next, there's always the questions about the depth chart,
the two deep, all that sort of thing, and really
and truly is Sart except for his depth chart at
every position.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
No, we always week one.
Speaker 4 (07:37):
For us, we always leave it open again because I
think a lot of guys there's still growth to be had.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
And and I.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
Think this week and as always early in the season,
because we play so many players early in the season
and now more than ever, Like if you're in the
two deep, you're playing in the first half, you know,
and then if you're three, there's a good chance that
you could play, especially at specific positions. And so it's
more about who's going to go on the field first.
(08:05):
But they're all gonna play, and so I try to
keep that open in week one so that guys can
continue to show their development, their improvement from week to
week to week. And this is an important week for
a lot of our younger players who continue to develop.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
You heard him when he was talking about Colorado State,
mentioning Tory Horton what a danger he is both as
a receiver and as a kick return and he was
asked about the keys to being able to tackle that
young man.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
Yeah, I think it's I think it's you know, with him,
first of all, where is he lining up? You know
the guy they move him around a fair amount and
then have the ability to win at the top of
routes against him. He's got good length. And then you
got to get him on the ground. And as much
as getting him on the ground when we're on defense,
we've got to get him on the ground when he's
returning kicks too, We've got to get him on the
(08:51):
ground because when he can open his stride up and
get in the open field, he can run away from you.
And so I think it's going to be important that
we get multiple hats to the ball, not just with him,
but with everybody. We've got to play with amazing effort defense,
and we've got to swarm the football with the understanding
that we might miss some tackles in week one, and
well it's okay sometimes to miss as long as two,
(09:12):
three and four tacklers are showing up, you know, right
after that.
Speaker 3 (09:15):
And so that just goes back to effort.
Speaker 4 (09:17):
And so that's why we always try to critique effort first, uh,
to make sure that our guys are playing playing with
that fanatical effort that's needed for US defense.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
Now, this long one football team has a lot of
young guys on it, as we mentioned, and some newer
faces are but they also have some veterans as well, leaders,
guys who really make a difference for that and Sark
was asked about is there a trickle down effect and
how does that work in terms of the veteran guys
the leaders passing that along to some of those younger
guys to learn about what this is all about.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
Yeah, this is a this is a bit of a
more of a unique year for us that way. And
I know we lost some we lost some great players
off of last year's team, and we lost some some
tremendous leadership off of last year's team. And that was
something coming into this year, what was it going to
look like for us? And then you just named off
a few, but I could, I literally, I could listen
(10:09):
between twenty to thirty guys who have been with us
now that are in year four in our program that
really our culture is their culture. You know, it's not
something that we're trying to instill in them. That's just
who they are. And I think more than ever when
you just listen to them talk, uh, they don't they
speak our language. Yet sometimes I feel like they're saying
(10:31):
exactly what I've been saying now for three and four years.
And that's the beauty of having you know, continuity as
a staff and players on your team as well as
you know the coaches that at the coordinator position, they're
hearing a very consistent messaging which which ultimately then it
(10:51):
starts to exude out of them and it's easier for
them to work with the younger players that are trying
to figure it out because they sometimes can see the
roadblocks for the younger players before we do, and where
could those roadblocks come up?
Speaker 3 (11:05):
And when they start getting in front of.
Speaker 4 (11:06):
It, the sooner those younger players really start getting on
board and contributing to the success of the team.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
And all of that helps them when they start to
have to deal with adversity, and adversity will happen. It
always does with every football team, no matter how good
they are, And Sark was asked about that.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
Yeah, no, I really do.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
And you know, our players, I think one when they
grow up with us, you know, we we do throw
a lot at them, and we put them in some
uncomfortable situations and we try to, you know, get them
out of their comfort zone to expand their comfort zone.
And so for a lot of the older players, they
can almost sense when I'm doing something like that and
(11:47):
they almost rally more now. And you can feel that leadership.
You can feel that energy from the Michael Tafts or
the Baron Surrels, or the Alphad Collins, the Jade Barons
on defense. I mean, I mean I can name a
ton you know, the Jake Majors, the Kelvins, the Hayden Connors,
those guys, the Jayden Blues that you can feel them like, oh,
here's one of those moments. This is when we really
(12:07):
got to go forward as from the leadership standpoint, And
so that's encouraging for me right, that that gives me.
That gives me a lot of confidence to know that, hey,
we're going to get put in some tough situations. You know,
I touched on this with them at the start of
training camp. You know, we won We won twelve games
last season. Eight of those twelve wins were one score
games in the fourth quarter, and so it wasn't like
(12:30):
we just walked our way to victories. We had to
find ways to win late in games and some adverse situations.
And I think that part, in part was our culture
and our leadership, and we're going to need that again
this fall.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
And that also goes to the running back situation, because
they had running backs get banged up as we know
and lost for the year.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
No CJ.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
Baxter, you know, no Christian Clark. So is he happy
with what he has there? And of course the addition
through the portal that they did as well to add
Velton Gardner from SMU, a grad transfer there. But does
he have a good feel for his guys in the
(13:12):
backfield and that they can run between the tackles and
run hard.
Speaker 4 (13:16):
We're gonna run between the tackles. They learn how to
run when they keep when the day they show up
here three years ago. I couldn't have said that about
Jayden Blue, but he's been an understudy to b Jon Robinson,
Roshawn Johnson, Jonathan Brooks, and he's more than capable. Trey Wisner,
Jered Gibson. I mean, all these guys. You know, when
we go to team run, we're a physical football team,
(13:38):
and we believe in running the ball. We believe in
stopping the run, and inevitably you learn how to run
our style, and then we accentuate that with the perimeter
plays and different things with the running back. So they're
gonna run between the tackles and then they'll do great.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (13:51):
All right, So there's some thoughts from logrn's head coach,
Steve Sarkisian. We'll hear more from sark coming up next
hour and all also in the four o'clock hour, And again,
want to remind you we're going to give away a
pair of tickets to the best talk back response we
get today to this question, what was the first long
(14:15):
worn football game you attended and what do you remember
about it? And the best response using our talkback feature
will win. We always invite you to text the program
and you're welcome to text the program. You text the
word texts followed by your question or comment to eight
one five three zero. Again, that's the word texas. You
(14:36):
text that first, follow by your question or comment to
eight one five three zero eight one five three zero.
Standard messaging and data rates may apply. But that's not
how you win the tickets. If you want to win
a pair of tickets to the game, we're going to
select the best submission on our talk back feature. And again,
you go to your iHeartRadio app on your phone. If
(14:59):
you don't have, you can download it. It's free. It's
easy to download. And then you pull up a thirteen
under the zone and there's a red button there with
a white microphone on it. That's the talkback. You push
that and then you can leave us a message of
up to thirty seconds. Do not go over thirty. If
you go over thirty, you disqualify yourself. It's like going
over on the showcase on the prices right, So keep
(15:21):
it inside of thirty seconds, but in thirty seconds or less,
tell us your memories of your first long run football
game that you attended at home home game and what
you remember about it. Best response will win a pair
of tickets to the crowd Colorado State game. All right,
Up next, we have Inconceivable for Monday afternoon, and we'll
get to that coming up when we continue on Sports
(15:42):
Radio AM thirteen under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app
