the morning on Monday live from campus at Derek K. Royal,
(00:24):
Texas Memorial Stadium, where we bring you the program Monday
mornings at eleven am.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
The producer Cameron Parker joins me over there as well
as my cardball Harj.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
From the morning kickoff that you hear seven and nine
am here on the Zone, and also Lifetime Longhorn Will Matthews,
our sideline reporter on our Long Worn Radio Network broadcast,
and he will be with us as well.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
We'll bring you the.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
First half hour there, and then also the second half
hour is Sarks Weekly's press conference. We bring that to
you live from Stem to Stern as we did this morning,
and then of course come back here for the program
this afternoon from two to five. And today since it's
the season open and we're giving away a pair of
tickets to the Texas Colorado State game where I'm told
(01:17):
I'm just double checking this cam even as we speak.
But I'm told that it's not supposed to be as
brutally hot as more. In fact, how about this, I
don't know if you say, have you seen the forecast
for Saturday, I have surprised, right, there's a forty percent
chance of rain in the area with a high forecast.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Of eighty eight. That's it, eighty eight.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
The football gods have lest us credit.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
Hey, and even the day before if we don't get
any rain, like, it's not forecast to rain the day
before Friday. This is ninety three, just ninety three. In fact,
we're supposed to stay in the up for eighties to
nineties all week long. So that's that's really good. So
there's rained around the Greater Austin. They're in Hey. That's
(02:07):
a hopeful thing. So we'll hope for that. So that's
why we're taking your memories of your first long worn
football game you attended at DKR Texas Memorial Stadium. We
just said a gentleman talk about going in nineteen sixties.
So I don't remember who the opponent was, he said,
but I remember Texas won the game, So that would
(02:29):
have a nineteen sixty narrative to these teams, it could
have been. They opened it a home against Nebraska and
lost on September seventeenth. Then they went to Maryland in
one thirty four nothing. So their next home game was
against Texas Tech. They shut them out seventeen to nothing.
Then they had the game in Dallas against Oklahoma and
(02:51):
they shut out the Sooners twenty four to nothing. They
came back the following week against Arkansas and lost twenty
four twenty three. Then went to Rice to Houston play
eighteenth r Rice and lost seven to nothing. Came back
the next week beat SMU at home seventeen seven one,
(03:13):
at Baylor twelve to seven, one, at Tech at TCU
three to two. Wow, it was a three run homer
in the bottom.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
Of the eighth No. Three to two.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
They beat TCU and then on Thanksgiving beat Texas A
and M at home twenty one to fourteen. Went to
the Blue Bonnet Bowl that year and tied Bear Bryant
Alabama three to three. They wound up seven three and
one that season. So their home games for that gentleman
who said he didn't remember, I'm gonna guess it was
(03:45):
Texas Tech. Their second own game on October first, because
he said he remembered it being a long run win.
Because the next time they won a home game was
October twenty ninth against SMU, So it probably was that.
But just looking at some of the other.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Some of the other games. Last time they played Colorado.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
State at home nineteen seventy five, they opened and they
beat him forty six to nothing, coming off that nineteen
seventy four season when they went eight and four in
that one. But yeah, they had those were some of
the season opening games. And then of course we had
the one gentleman talk about Jerry Gray running down Bo Jackson.
(04:28):
Great story there. They won that one. He remembered the date.
September fifteenth, nineteen eighty four. They beat Auburn thirty five
twenty seven. Then they played Penn State at the Meadowlands
and beat them twenty eight to three. They got off
to a great start beat Rise. The next week they
tied Oklahoma fifteen to fifteen in the rain and the
Cotton Bowl. It was number one and number two in
the country in that one. Our friend Todd Dodge was
(04:50):
a quarterback of Texas in that game. Todd, by the way,
making his return to coaching this Friday, night in the
season oh opener for Lovejoy High School up in Lucas
just east of Plano, Lovejoy against Lubbock Cooper. That's a
game we're doing on Ballet Sports Southwest televising that one
live on Bally Sports Southwest plus. That'll be on Friday
(05:14):
night on that one. But some of the other season
openers at home include Let's see my first game in
the Boot nineteen ninety two, a loss to Mississippi State
was John Mackovic's first game as head coach, lost that one.
Jackie Cherrill was coaching Mississippi State and lost that one
(05:35):
twenty eight to ten.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
In nineteen ninety five, Well ninety five was the game
in Hawaii that I was asked about.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
Ninety six their first game ever in the Big Twelve
Conference played Missouri where they had a monsoon of a
thunderstorm come down late in the first half and stop
the game. We had a delays halftime and the water
was just running down the bleachers like a waterfall giant.
(06:06):
They came out in the second half. The Missouri had
the ball inside their own ten yard line and they
had a pump block and Texas just kicked it in
high gear and ended up beating Missou that night forty
to ten. Ricky Williams had a big game that night.
Those were some of the ones that I remember over
the years, and there were some other other games as
(06:30):
as well, and of course, more recently, with Steve Sarkisian
as head coach, his first game in twenty twenty one,
it was a winter for Louisiana home thirty eight eighteen.
In twenty twenty two, it was over Louisiana Monroe, who
will play this year.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
They beat them fifty two to ten.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
And last year, of course, of Rice thirty seven attens
so started three to zero in home opener season opening
games at DKR Texas more Real Stadium. So that's you know,
some of those now. In terms of pro football notes,
the Dallas Cowboys did get Ceed Lamb under contract. Lamb
(07:16):
one hundred million dollars, guaranteed, a thirty eight million dollars
signing bonus a four year package worth one hundred and
thirty six million dollars. So he's in the fold now
and now we'll see. And you said, Jerry Jones was
kind of feeling himself a little bit today. He was
pretty pumped up about them, as some of the quotes
(07:36):
you saw.
Speaker 4 (07:37):
Well first before that crag it is a long horn Monday?
Correct that it is? Is it wrong to watch Ceede
Lamb highlights and a long worn Monday? Considering you know
he did play for those people at school up north
the Red River?
Speaker 3 (07:53):
Is that is that okay?
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Do you know that he really wanted to come to Texas?
Speaker 1 (07:57):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, but that's okay.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
That's sorry.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
Ceedee Lamb is is in the fold for the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
But to your point about Jerry Jones, so this is
actually a story from yesterday or our good friend, uh
Clarence Hill, who now writes for the All City Network,
I believe get it correctly. But he did an interview
with Jerry Jones yesterday, Craig, and this is a very
(08:27):
Jerry Jones type quote. And this was an exclusive one
on one interview, so they were probably they were in
the confines of Jerry's office. And he's known Clarence for
twenty something the years, so more of a personal relationship.
He would never probably say this at a regular press conference,
but he told Clarence Hill. I think Clarence kind of
asked him the question about if he would ever step
down as GM or relinquish the GM position and stay
(08:51):
on his owner either the Stephen Jones or hires somebody.
And this is Jerry Jones direct quote quote. I've done
it all, so I have an ordinate amount of confidence
that bleep and starts with this bleep starts with the
fl I'll go.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
Ahead and give you give you the hint there, and
it's not fun.
Speaker 4 (09:11):
If anyone can figure out how to get this blank done,
I can figure out how to get it done. I've
been there every which way from Sunday. I have busted
my blank a bunch a bunch and there's nobody living
that's out cutting and shooting that can't give you a
bunch of times they busted their blank. So blank, No,
(09:31):
there's nobody that could blanking come in here and do
all the contracts. And the best part of this quote, Craig,
he says an I quote and be a GM better
than I can.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
End quote. Jerry Jones, the owner in GM.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
Dallas Cowboys, telling Clarence hil yesterday that nobody could be
a better GM than Jerry Jones. And let's see the
last time Dallas Cowboys won a Super Bowl. Craig and
reached the NFC Championship game was what twenty he's seven years.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
Twenty eight.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
Okay, man, Well, if if no other GM could get
a team back to the NFC title game in twenty
eight years, I find that hard to believe. But hey,
that's a Jerry Jones quill.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
That's a classic. It's just that is just great stuff.
And that's our friend Chill Clarence Hill. He's he's with
a new company now.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
Of course, for years and years, like thirty years, I
think it.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
Was, he was with the Fort Worth Star Telegram and
now he has changed. And in fact, his new landing
spot is called All City Network.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
That's what it is.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
So he's, uh, he's covering the Cowboys for All City Network.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
His name, We'll get Chill on the show.
Speaker 1 (11:06):
He's a Texas grad and he's got a lot of
interests long where he's a long time friend. I've known
Clarence long time since both of us on the high
school football beat.
Speaker 4 (11:14):
And if anyone was wondering, did Jerry talk about maybe
stepping down anytime soon or what the deal is?
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Here is his quote on that.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
Now, when I can't effing think, when I'm old and
I can't even do that dot to dot, but I'm
a long way, a long way from not being able
to do it.
Speaker 3 (11:34):
How well is he?
Speaker 1 (11:35):
He's eighty one? Eighty one, Okay, he and Barry Manneler
are the same age. That's right, they're both eighty one.
Two of your favorite people saying that because we were
supposed to go to the concert last night, because Linda
really wanted to go, but she was sick. Here Bron Guidas,
she couldn't go. I won't admit to not being broken
(11:56):
hearted about it. I'm just saying we couldn't go. It's
just the way it went.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
So do you think Barry mallow could be the gym
the Dallas Cowboys?
Speaker 2 (12:06):
There would be those who would think he might do
a better job. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
I'm one of those.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
Hey, he got claring. He managed to get CD done.
You know he's been doing this stuff and he got
it done. What a way to get it done. To
the highest what highest paid non quarterback second high second
eyes paid on quarterback in the.
Speaker 4 (12:25):
NFL behind your starting fancy receiver, Justin Jefferson.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
That's true, that's true.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
I would have drafted CD coming back through the Snake
Draft my next pick, but he was gone before I
could get him, so I couldn't get him.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Thought about him? Who did I draft? I drafted late
in the draft, Zeke, Is it all w Yeah?
Speaker 4 (12:45):
It was late. It was late, like round fifteen out
of seventeen. And when you try to draft him, are
you an ESPN or Yahoo?
Speaker 2 (12:52):
CBS?
Speaker 3 (12:52):
The CBS say, are you sure about this pic?
Speaker 2 (12:57):
So I also drafted Dick of the Kicker. There you go.
But anyway, all right.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
Up next more from Loghorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian. We'll
continue on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of
the iHeartRadio app.
