Speaker 1 (00:03):
It's the craig Way Show with the voice of the
Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame Broadcasting Craig Way.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Last chance to get in your talkback submissions in if
you want to try to win a pair of tickets
to Saturday season opener against Colorado. That We're going to
announce the winner and play the winning entry coming up
in the next segment before we wrap up the show.
All right, More from Steve Sarkishan from the press conference
we brought to Yes we will every money in our

(00:38):
long run. Mondays live here on AM thirteen hunderd the Zone.
So ask how confident he is about what he knows
this team is capable of achieving.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
Well, I think the one thing about this team, and
I've said this a few people here in the last
three or four days that have asked me about just
the season, You're excited for the season. And I'm excited
for the season because this is a very close knit team.
These guys are tight and I think because a lot
of it is they grew up all together. You know
that they've all just kind of grown up in the

(01:12):
same household, in the same culture. And then the guys
that we have integrated into the program. Transfers or new players.
They've just kind of taken them in with open arms.
And that part is something that I've learned, and you
never know what that really looks like. You know, I'm
around all summer, but when you get to training camp
and I really am around those guys, you know, majority

(01:33):
of the day, and you can see the rapport they
have with one another. That part's exciting for me because
I really believe our culture is gonna win us games.
I felt that it did last year. I think it's
going to again this year, more so than ever because
of the connectivity that these guys have with one another.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
He was also asked what specific things is he looking
forward to seeing in week number one.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
Everything was funny. Saturday we had our mock game, and
I know you guys wonder what the heck is a
mock game. But last week we took our players through
as if it was game week. You know, Monday was
our normal Monday, and season Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
was game day. We did all of pregame warm ups,
We did all those things, and it was interesting. Coach

(02:20):
Jackson came up to me during during pregame during the
mock game Saturday, and he said, you know, a year
ago you told me how much you love Saturdays in
college football. It's the greatest day. And he goes, I
know what you mean now, and like I love Saturdays
from the moment we get up we have breakfast together,

(02:41):
to the walkthrough, to putting on our suits, to coming
down Bevo Boulevard, to taking the field for pregame, to
watching the fans kind of sprinkle in the stands, the
smell of the popcorn, the band coming in, the music's playing,
the other teams on the other sideline, coming out of
the tunnel, like all of that, you know, singing the
eye at the end, the smoke, the cannon, Bevo, like everything,

(03:04):
like that's all part of this game that's going on
on the field that that we're so fortunate to be
part of. And so I look forward to everything and
and I and I and I believe this in like
I think teams take on the personality head coach, especially
over time. And I really think our team enjoys game
days too. Like all of that it entails, and we

(03:25):
work way too hard not to take a minute just
to take it in and to and to and to
breathe in the smell of the popcorn, to to to
see the student section and the orange smoke going off
or the drones at the night games. Like we we
try to embrace all that because all that's going on
because we play football here at the University of Texas,
and so we don't take that stuff lightly. And I

(03:46):
think for our team, I think if you ask them
all they're excited for all of it. You know, Saturdays
are the greatest days, you know, in the fall, it's
the greatest days of the year. They're incredible.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
It's a great way to describe it as well. What
about the personality of Texas football in general on this team, Well.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
I think again, I think it's the connectivity because I
don't think that we just have like these one, two
or three just dominant leaders that are the absolute voice
of our team. You know, a couple of years ago
was Roshan Johnson, and Roshan spoke, everybody listened. You know,
last year it might have been Jordan Winnington and Birah

(04:23):
Murphy when they spoke, everybody listened. Now I feel like
we have so many voices and their great voices and
they're speaking really good wisdom and great words that that's
what makes this team special, that they've they're all in
it together and it's not kind of any sort of hierarchy.
They're really in it together and they know they need

(04:45):
one another to make it happen. And so that's probably
the special ingredient for this team, which is different maybe
than the past couple of years.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
So in discussing all of these different things, which are
you know, personal driven, the question then followed about how
he feels about this particular team. Remember this is sarch
for season, and each of the first three seasons there
were still a healthy influx of players who were here

(05:15):
when he got here, players that came in and played
for coach Herman, and they're still one or two still around.
David Benda is one who comes to mind. There's some
guys that are still around, but by and large these
are all guys that these recruited. But Sark doesn't think
that necessarily makes the difference between whether he felt like
last year was his team or this year's a team.

(05:36):
They're all his teams.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
I don't know, they've all kind of they all become
your team, you know, you know, I've never felt like,
oh I didn't recruit that guy. I mean, I've always
just coached them all the best of my ability and
try to put them in the best position to be
successful and developed great relationships with them. You know, I
think probably the uniqueness to this team. I think we
have like five guys that were here before I got

(06:00):
here that are that are still here, but the rest
of them we recruited, and so you have a little
bit of a better relationship early on with them because
you recruited them. But in the end, you know, I
think my connectivity with them is as are more important
than their own connectivity with one another, because I'm kind
of the straw that stirs the drink, right and I've

(06:20):
got to be engaged with those guys that way, and
so you know, I just I just want to make
sure that I'm at my best for them because they
deserve that, because I know how hard they've worked, and
if they can see me exuding the time, effort, energy,
the expertise of of what I'm good at for them,
I think then that's the whay the reciprocal starts to

(06:42):
you start to get that, and so we've got a
mature team that way. I think they understand that and
they and they come to work every day with that mentality.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
A couple of final things. One that whole thing about
the expectation of winning and how he wants that instillments
team as opposed to being whatever, too cocky about it
too and not being serious about it. There's always a
balance involved there.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
Yeah, you know, I think the first thing with both
those guys, with Pete and Nick, there was a real
belief in competition, and there was a real belief in
you know you We do a lot of you know,
ones on ones, you know, good on good team, run
team period, scrimmages, and that's what those guys instilled to me.
You know, it's not just about the scout team and
feel good. Oh, all the players work and all the

(07:28):
blitzes work. It's going against one another and failing and winning.
And so that's the first part. I think there's a
healthy dose of competition in our program on a daily basis.
I think the second part both those guys did a
great job of and and coach Saban says it the best,
you know, the worst thing that can happen to you
is play bad and win because most people are results

(07:51):
oriented and they see we will won and so it
was good enough. And I think the mark of a
really good coach is able to identify areas where we
need to improve as we continue to grow as a program.
And that's on a daily basis on the practice field,
but that's also throughout the season. We have to continue
to get better over the next five six months. We

(08:12):
just didn't practice up until this point, and then okay,
this is as good as we can be. We have
to continually find areas to improve. And I thought both
those guys did a great job in my time with
them at doing.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
That all right. And one final thing there is it
was brought up today the word came out this morning
that miss Edith Royal, the widow of Daryl K. Royal himself,
passed away. Of course, Coach Royle passed away back in
twenty twelve. Miss Royle passed away this morning at the
age of ninety eight, a couple months Shiver ninety ninth birthday,

(08:46):
and Sark was asked did he have a chance to
meet her, meet Coach Royle and what are his thoughts
about that.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
I did not get to meet Coach Royle, but I
got a wonderful video message from Edith when I first
got the job here that I still have, and the
impact that they've had here, not only at the University
of Texas but in Austin. The impact that coach Royal
had on the game of football itself, and the fact
that you know, I get to sit in the same

(09:17):
chair he did is pretty humbling. You know, it's definitely
an honor and so hopefully, you know, we can we
can go out and play a brand of football that
in a style of football that he'd be proud of
as well.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
All Right, there it is, and when we come back,
we'll tell you who the winner is of our ticket
giveaway today through a talkback feature. We'll do that here
on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
