Speaker 1 (00:00):
Walgworts get ready to take the field. Michael taff Uh,
(00:04):
the long worn safety, was visiting with the media yesterday
and then, you know, you know how it is in
this town. That was gonna be hard hitting media questions,
real hard, you know, like whose idea was it for
Taft to get a haircut?
Speaker 2 (00:18):
We were in the weight room and Quinn it was me,
Quinn and Trey Owen's and Quinn was kind of just like,
you know, if I get a buzz.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Cut, well we all and I was like, yes, screw
went on senior senior year, so we all decided to
get a little buzz cut, you know, taper fade, Uh,
just a limit of distractions.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
It's season time and senior year time to go in
and Nattie so just whatever. I think it was good,
but you know, my girlfriend says otherwise.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
So yeah, and that's kind of what counts after all,
isn't it.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
There?
Speaker 1 (00:55):
Taffles asked what, really and truly what is he most
excited about during game week?
Speaker 2 (01:01):
We don't have to play each other anymore for the
last going back from summer spring and now fall Campbellust
six months, we get to play somebody else. So it's
fun to get ready to face another opponent and not
just go against our really good receivers are really good
running backs, because you know that just gets tiring. I'm
(01:23):
excited to play new, new competition and just get the
season started.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
They get the season starting against Colorado State. Earlier in
the program, we visited with Brian Rothter play by playvoice,
and I asked him about their dangerous wide receiver and
punt returner, Tory Horton. Tory Horton, and of course you'll
want to ask a safety about an outstanding receiver, which
is what Taff was asked about Tory Horton.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
Number fourteen.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
He's long, he's fast, he's got really good routes, and
then he goes up and.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
Gets the ball.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
The quarterback places it, you know, where he needs to
place it on where the receivers and can make a
play on the ball. So it's a really good challenge
for us as a secondary. You know, they were top
fifteen and passing in the whole country last year, so
we got a really good challenge. Week one, we're focusing
on Coloro State, and so I'm excited to go compete.
(02:18):
You know, I'm excited for this quarterback and this set
of receivers.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
So among the challenges is one of I'm getting the
guy to the ground tackling him.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Yeah, well, main focus, you know, eliminate, eliminate.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
The miss tackles.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
I think week one, you know, just across the country
of the main focus for defensive guys is tackling because
you haven't gone live really in fall camp, and so
this is the first type of live, real, live challenge
for defense, and so tackling is always the main emphasis,
and that starts with myself. I can't preach tackling to
(02:51):
my guys if I'm not doing it myself. So I
gotta first take tackling to heart, make every single tackle
that is presented to myself.
Speaker 4 (02:59):
But then I'll so appreciate to the guys.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
And like I said, uh, number fourteen, he's long, physical,
you know, goes up and gets the ball. He's fast,
he's got good routes, so he's gonna try to make
us miss. And when he gets the ball out in
the perimeter, all of us.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
Yeah, he moves around.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
He's usually at number one, but he goes into slot
and and empty sets and third down he moves around,
so all of us are gonna get our fair share
of covering him. But you know, no disrespect to the
other receivers. They got a receiver that transfer from Baylor
that you know is a really good receiver. They got
a receiver that's coming back in the slot. They got
(03:40):
a tight end from junior college that is tall and
physical that can catch the ball. And then they use
their running backs as receiving threats too, So you know,
they got a bunch of threats there.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
A raid offense.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
You know that guy that runs that offense, his dad,
I think invented the air raid offense. So you know,
they they they utilize their threats on the on the perimeter.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
He's referring to Matt Mummy, who was the son of
Hal Mummy, they kind of the father of of that
air raid attack. So since we're talking about tackling, have
they done a better job of tackling in Fall Camp?
Speaker 2 (04:13):
Yeah, I think the live aspects of Fall Camp we
tackled a lot better.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
We were a good tackling team.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
We think we made eighty percent of tackles last year
and that's really good and comparison to to.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
Across the country.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Now, if we looked at it, if you you know,
just cut it down to five percent. If you make
eighty five percent of those tackles, then you eliminate like
nine hundred yards. So a lot of times people look
at just how many yards they get on the air. Well,
it wasn't really just on the dbs, it's on the
whole team. If they run a dual screen, then it's
it's considered a passing game. Well, if everybody on the
team misses a tackle, then it goes for ninety nine yards.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
That's ninety nine yards in the air.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
So if we eliminate those tackle those mistackles, then we're
gonna be a good team.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
He's an a good football player and hetty and really
read reminds me a lot the way he plays, the
way he quarterbacks in the secondary, so to speak, reminds
me a lot of when his position coach Blake Gideon
was playing at Texas. A very similar type of player
in the way that he ran around back in the
secondary and kind of managed some things. Earl Thomas will
(05:22):
tell you that he never would have attained the All
American status in college and then got to play as
many years as he did in the NFL if not
for Blake Gideon helping him out. A lot putting him
in the right spot, pointing him out, and Taff I
think does some of that as well. All Right, we'll
hear more from Mookie Taff coming up next hour, as
well as from Quinn youwers, and we'll be back to
wrap up Hour number two on sports Radio AM thirteen
(05:43):
under the Zone in the iHeartRadio app.
