Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's hear some more from Quinn Ewers, the long orange
quarterback shifting to the backfield. You may have heard the
receiver Ryan Nibblett since Long Warns have been kind of
short changed a little bit and running back and Velton
Gardener's had to transfer in a grad transfer is added
into the mix as well. But Ryan Nibblett has started
(00:22):
to take some snaps at running back as well as
being the receiver that he is.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
And Youwers was asked about that dynamic.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
I mean, he's a smart kid.
Speaker 4 (00:31):
I think he's always understood each position. But you know,
I think he's done a good job over the past
couple of weeks, you know, changing it up and getting
into running back and you.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Know he's got to get or he's.
Speaker 4 (00:43):
Gotten used to, I guess running in between the tackles.
I think that's the biggest, biggest changeup is running around
all those guys whenever he's used to being around the
smaller dbs.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Yeah, that's that's one thing.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Now with regard to the running back position itself, how
important is it for the running to get that first
game under their belt, especially the experienced ones like Jared Gibson.
Of course, Trey Wisner has had some experience, but largely
he played on special teams. So you know, Jame Blue
is the experience back back there. But with the newer crop,
(01:17):
how important is it for some of those lesser experienced
guys to get in those reps in a real game situation.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:23):
I think Blue's got.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
A lot of confidence in himself.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
You know, he's played in games and he's in He's
made big plays in big moments, and you know, we're
all we all know what he's capable of doing. And
you know, and the other guys, you know, they got
to get some games under their belts and some experience.
But I think it's super important for those other guys
for sure.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
Yeah, absolutely, that's you know, nothing beats experience when you
get into a game.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
All right, Now back to yours himself. A lot of.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Questions asked about Quinn and how his offseason win and
the leadership thing and all that stuff. But in short,
where has he improved the most this offseason?
Speaker 4 (02:03):
I think the biggest thing for me is being more
comfortable in the pocket, not having such you know.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Not having such like a wanting to roll out or
wanting to look down.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
At the line of scrimmage, keeping eyes downfield and overall
just comfortable within the offense and comfortable within defensive schemes
pre snap and posting that.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Yeah, man certainly helps as well. Now, if you haven't noticed,
Quinn Owers has done a bit of acting lately. He's
been in television commercials representing law firms, representing NCAA Football
(02:49):
twenty five and we hear that he's going to be
in those new Doctor Pepper Fansville commercials playing a deputy
to the share of the sheriff. Of course is Brian Bosworth,
the former oaklhom was sooner and all that sort of sense.
So Quinn was asked, how's that acting career going for him?
Speaker 4 (03:08):
I think it's gotten gotten a lot better in the
past year or so, for sure.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
And of the old Doctor Pepper thing, who knows? Who knows?
Speaker 4 (03:16):
That the guys liked it though, so you know, I've
actually heard that a couple of times. I think I
think it's funny.
Speaker 5 (03:25):
L deal has gotten the most reaction out of their
locker bab video.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
Yes, that was one for the law firm.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
There talking about that, and he's uh, and he took
it all and stried good naturedly as well, okay, we
mentioned Belton Gardner, uh transferring in from s m U,
the grad transfer man.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
It was pretty late.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
Remember they had to make sure that he graduated and
can roll as a grad student. All that finally worked
out and now trying to pick up football as well.
How divid gold is it for a guy like Gardner
to step in, as asked of viewers, Yeah, I.
Speaker 4 (04:05):
Definitely think that everyone is drown to to fully buy
in and fully trust with coach Sarkasan. And you know,
he's he's one national, he's one national championships, and he's
he's put.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Guys in the draft and in the NFL. So I mean,
trust him and he'll he'll take care of the rest,
for sure. We all trust him.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
That's good to know that he continues to work and
improve on that. All right, So as they continue to
go forward, does this team embody its head coach? Does
it take on the personality of the head coach?
Speaker 2 (04:39):
You know?
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Is in short, is this team embodying what sark is
all about?
Speaker 3 (04:44):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (04:45):
I definitely think that everyone is grown to to fully
buy in and fully trust with coach Sarkasan. And you know,
he's he's one national, he's one National championships, and he's
He's put guys.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
In the draft and in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (04:57):
So I mean, trust him and he'll they'll take care
of the rest for sure.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
We all trust him.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
A couple more things from quinn viewers. Does he have
a favorite part of game day? The whole experience and
getting ready? You know, start kind of waxed eloquently on
it yesterday. Does Quinn have a favorite part of game day?
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Man?
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Just fans.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
I like being around the fans and and feeling the
excitement that they have.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
And then finally, this will certainly be the first game
for Quinn since last year ended in New Orleans on
the passes that went in complete in the end zone.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
So does he still.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Carry the memory of that Washington loss in the College
Football Playoffs semifinal with him?
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Definitely thought about it.
Speaker 4 (05:46):
I mean, I'm a human being, and I understand, you know,
what happened, But you know, it's tough to it's tough
to look back on on games like that, and you know,
I think it's I think it adds a little bit
motivation and added motivation over the over the off season,
for sure.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
But no, I tried I tried not to focus on
it too much.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
Okay, all right, so there's some things from Quinn yours.
Now a little more from Michael Tapp. We heard him
talking about tackling and improvement of the defense and so
which brings us now to one of the newcomers there
in the secondary, and that's Joelanie McDonald. And where has
McDonald made the most progress.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
Johnny's a stud.
Speaker 5 (06:26):
He's athletic, he's physical, he's a ballhawk, he's smart, and
I think, you know, just he didn't have you know,
he was moving around last year in the defense. He
was playing a little bit of linebacker, a little bit
of star, a little bit of safety.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
He was just moving around. But the coaches knew that
he was going to be a.
Speaker 5 (06:44):
Player because he was always running to the ball, no
matter if he was that linebacker, if he's that star safety.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
He was always getting to the ball. He was finding
his way to the ball, he was breaking when the
ball is thrown.
Speaker 5 (06:54):
And so he's just always been a guy since he
got on got to campus. And then now that he's
settle down on more than just kind of focusing on
one position, that's helped him a lot and.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
Growing his game Okay, that always helps with regard to
the team mindset. I talked about this the game last
Saturday in Dublin, Ireland. Florida State's upset loss to Georgia Tech.
You would think that would probably garner the attention of
(07:27):
college football teams, especially favored ones and the better ones all.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Across the country.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
So Michael Taff was asked about that loss for Florida
State to Georgia Tech.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Did it helped get the long words attention?
Speaker 5 (07:41):
You know, I think comparison is always the thief of joy.
But we were definitely Washington. We were paying attention. You know,
you try to be more situational masters by seeing what
other teams do across the country and see what you know,
an underdog type of story tries to attack a team
like Florida State and what they do on offense, what
(08:02):
they do on special teams, what do they do when
it gets to logo, what do they do when you know,
the quarterback just throws a turnover a pick and the
defense now.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
It gets on the field. So just little things like that.
Speaker 5 (08:13):
But I'm really just focused on Colorado State and we
got a really good opponent coming up.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
All right, There was that quote. Again, I always like,
you know, what is it? Comparison is a thief of joy?
Do you think someone's like, hey, Dar, you say it
the second time. Is that kind of like beetle juice?
They say beetle juice, beetle juice, that kind of thing.
Comparison is a thief of joy? He said it last week.
I was like, Wow, I like that. I like it again.
(08:39):
I did like hearing it. Okay, How is growing up
around Jade Baron and Andrew mccooba. Remember Jade from Connolly,
Lecooba from LBJ chat from west Lake. They did a
lot of off season work together. They've known each other.
Mccouba and Baron have known each other since middle school.
(09:01):
How does growing up around those guys help on the field.
Speaker 5 (09:04):
Yeah, for sure. Well, adversity is always going to strike.
You know, I think it comes up in many many ways.
It's never the same based on each team. You know,
I think j Ford, j Witt, Quinn, Jay Majors. The
leaders that were on the team last year, they probably
got different adversity pieces than what we've got as leaders
(09:26):
this year. And so, you know, the the best thing
that we've done as leaders is we're.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
On the same page.
Speaker 5 (09:32):
There's not one leader speaking out of this side of
his mouth and I'm coming at somebody else at this
side of my mouth. We're all on the same page,
and everybody on the team understands the mission and what
we're trying to get as leaders, and and then you know,
down the ladder to the to the team.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
Yeah, that's all about handling university. Now, as I mentioned
the deal about being around Johnny Baron and Andrew mccuba
and how it has that helped them on the field, man.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
That's hard.
Speaker 5 (10:00):
You know, our quarterback that's gonna trot out on Saturday
is pretty good.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
He's experienced.
Speaker 5 (10:07):
When you trust guys as as defensive backs with one another,
it makes it real easy. You know, I can trust Jodday,
I can trust Macouba even before they they got here,
and and Jody the same way before I got here.
And so just knowing that you can speak to them
in a different language. You know, mccoubah can get on me,
(10:29):
Jodday can get on me, and I'm not gonna come
at him sideways because we're all family. And so that's
that's just the main point about it is, is like
I'm just really excited to play with those guys. It's
it's so much fun to see how much we've worked together,
that come together as as one team, one defensive back room.
It's just it's so cool, and it's cool for you know,
(10:49):
our defensive back trainder that has trained us all our
you know, all our career growing up and even to
this day. It's probably cool for him to see that
three of his guys are in the back end. So
I'm excited to play those guys.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
Okay, And then finally, finally, they're the same question that
we put to Quinn youwers his favorite part of game day.
Speaker 5 (11:07):
I listened to a Cole McCoy documentary my sophomore year,
and he talked about when he runs out of the tunnel,
he takes three breaths, and so I go on the
thirty six yard line for Jake Ellinger, he wore thirty
six in high school wear.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Sixteen for Jackson Cocher.
Speaker 5 (11:23):
So try to, you know, uphold both of those guys
that left the legacy for me, and I got the
thirty six star line. I take three breasts, look at
the visitors side, look at the end zone side, and
then look at our side and just soak it all
in because there's not a lot of people that can
say they've played for the burn Orange. This is the
only this is the only school that gets to wear
this color. And I'm so blessed to be on the
(11:45):
field playing representing my school, representing my state.
Speaker 3 (11:48):
So that's my favorite thing, taking it all in and
then going out there and playing.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
Here it is from Mookie Tad Michael tap all right,
we'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
program on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
