Speaker 1 (00:03):
Back to the Craig Way Show.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Connect with Craig through the text line by text Team
Texas to Age one five three zero, followed by your message,
standard message and data rates may Applot got a couple
other things to get to. First of all, there were
a couple more cuts from Long Worn's head coach Steve
Sarkisian that wanted to bring to you from today's press conference.
One asked him to describe the synergism, the chemistry that

(00:32):
is working apparently quite well between the newest edition of
to the Long Worn coaching staff, Johnny Nansen, the co
defensive coordinator along with defensive coordinator Pete Kakowski, and how
they've been able to use three man fronts and then
go with six d b's and just really mix a
variety of coverages and looks.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
It's been a great collaboration.

Speaker 4 (00:53):
Like I said, I thought coach Nansen was going to
be a great addition for us.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
I think that that has been really helpful.

Speaker 4 (00:59):
I think now more than ever because of the depth
we have at varying positions that we're able to do
some of that. And we've got some really versatile dbs.
You know, I've talked about John Day at Length Jalen
Gilbo that way. I think, like I said, the versatility
of Derek Williams and Jolani McDonald, the things that they
can do, has allowed.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Us to do more of those things.

Speaker 4 (01:22):
And then depth across the board, you know, because from
week to week, you know, what we.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
Were getting ready to play last week in.

Speaker 5 (01:28):
An aread offense is different than what we're getting ready
to play this week in a Michigan style offense. And
so having that depth, having that versatility is big. I
try to dive in with those guys enough to say, hey,
here's who I think they are.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
If I was them, this is how I would try
to attack, and maybe this is what I would try
to do, and then I let them go do their thing,
and then I try to evaluate later in the week
as we go to say, hey, this is what I
would really start to expect now that I've had a
little bit more time, And here's where I think as
the week's gone on, maybe we're vulnerable and this is
when I would be ready for them to try to

(02:03):
attack once they see what our plan looks like.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
Okay, there's that.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
And then finally he was asked if he had any
real recollection of the Rose Bawl channing Way first two
thousand five, following the two thousand and four season, that's
when Sark was actually in the NFL on the Oakland
Raiders staff when the Long Rues had that epic game
against the Michigan Wolverines, winning on the Dustin Magnum field goal.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (02:30):
If I watched the game live, but I've definitely seen
the highlights of it. Was twenty years ago, Roger, you know,
so I was like, write my brain around, but I
do know I remember that the impact of that because
that kind of was the springboard into the next season
that ultimately that I was back at USC. You gotta

(02:52):
remember I was at the Oakland Raiders the year before,
so I do remember that, especially in the next season
looking back at that game from a perspective of that
was kind of the springboard into that next National championship
year in Vince in that whole crew, and they had
an amazing football team obviously, so iconic game though, Like

(03:13):
every time I see these two uniforms on the field together,
it just looks right like Texas and Michigan on the field,
the helmets, the whole thing looks like college football to me.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Yeah, it's pretty exciting stuff to think about there, about
that great game.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
And it was the springboard, oh five.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
And as I often said, and I said so when
a lunch in last week, the springboard of that game
really was Texas surviving fourth and eighteen at Kansas a
few weeks prior to that, had they not converted that
and Vin Chung did it in what looked to be
three strides when he ran for the first down, stepped
out of a tackle of k State or Kansas Big

(03:50):
twelve defensive Player of the Year linebacker Nick Reid stepped
out of his grasp. If he does not pick up
that first down, Texas loses that game, they don't go
to the Rose Bowl, wind up a thinking the alimoble,
and they almost certainly don't start the next season number
two where they would have been in position to make
that run. And you know all none of that would

(04:12):
have happened had they not converted the fourth and eighteen.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
But they did, and they won the game against Kansas.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
They went on and won that epic game in the
Rose Bowl against Michigan on them all right, Well, one
more a little bit of conversation. This came off the
whim on Saturday, Will Matthews in our long ward locker
room and visiting with center Jake Majors and with the
six year senior John A.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
Baron, who had an interception in the game as well.

Speaker 6 (04:38):
Our special guest right now is none other than Jake Majors.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
Jake's how you doing? What did you see today?

Speaker 6 (04:45):
Congratulations by the way, let's let's start there.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
Yeah, of course, but what did you see today? Tell
us what was going on out there?

Speaker 7 (04:51):
You know, we we saw a really good team in
Colorado State. They played a lot of Nickel two what
we had. But you know, we trusted each other out there.
We trusted our culture and we relied on each other
whenever times got tough. But you know, it wasn't perfect.
It wasn't perfect for everybody, and we know that, and
we're gonna go into next week fixing those problems. And
like coach Flood says all the time, you know, the

(05:13):
great teams improved from week one to week two, and
you know, if we want to be great, we got
to improve.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Hey, Jake, it's Craig Craig and Roger Upsters.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
I wanted to ask you about that.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
You know, as many snaps as you take it throughout
your college career, it's still when you get into that
first game of the season, a little bit of an
adjustment phase, isn't it Just getting back into the rhythm
going up against another another group, into being able to
execute the way you guys are used to doing.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
Yeah, of course.

Speaker 7 (05:38):
And you know, at the end of the day, you know,
we just got to rely on each other, you know,
whenever times get tough. Like I said before, we go
fall camp for a straight month going against our defense
and we finally get to hit someone new. So just
not letting those emotions get the best of us, and
at the same time, just trust in our training and
you know, not making stuff up like coach Sark always says.

Speaker 8 (05:57):
And Jake, you guys have a lot of veteran guys
that came in, but they haven't played a lot together.
How important is it to get that first one under
your belt?

Speaker 1 (06:06):
Quinn?

Speaker 8 (06:06):
The receivers, uh, the running backs, just to have some
you know, some experience now in a ball game.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
Yeah, of course.

Speaker 7 (06:13):
Like you said, they haven't really played that much together,
but you know they've they've practiced, uh the past month
and fall camp and before that, during the summer going over,
you know, the routes, formation, stuff like that. So whenever
you do it finally in a game, you can finally
continue to build on that chemistry that you've built the past,
you know, eight or so months, and then from there
on you just keep stacking days, stacking days, stacking days.

(06:35):
And by the time you know, we get to week five,
week six, you know, they're they're gonna be moving. So
I'm really proud of them. They uh, they stuck to
each other. You know, they trust each other out there,
and that's what's important about the uh, you know, game days.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
You trust each other.

Speaker 7 (06:48):
You trust that the person next year's gonna do what they're, uh,
they're assigned to do. And you know, we we came
up with a good.

Speaker 6 (06:54):
Win, Jake, when you said stacking days, Can you explain
that to everybody?

Speaker 7 (06:59):
What what does that mean? When you're talking about Yeah,
you know, it's all about you know, just can you stack?
You know everybody can do it once, you know everybody
can have one good game. Can you stack another game?
Can you stack another game after that? Can you continue
to get better? You know, been here five years? Can
I continue to get better? Can I continue to improve,
you know I have. You know there was stuff out

(07:19):
there that I need to fix, clearly, But at the
end of the day, you know, I'm not a finished product,
and I'm gonna keep working on it. And I know
like Quinn and the receivers are gonna keep working on
the running backs, tight ends. We all have a lot
to fix. But stack in the day is after you
have a good day, can you go the next day
and have it even better day and then just keep
stacking and stacking.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
Especially gays, the challenge has become more interesting, right Jake,
with that trip up to finish your good next week?

Speaker 7 (07:43):
Yeah, you know, really excited for that game. I know
everybody else is. You know, you know when it's hard,
win on the roads harder, but you know it's gonna
it's gonna be a really fun one. I'm so excited to,
you know, go up there with with this team. I
love this team so much and just to be able
to very insist with them, it's.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
Gonna be fun.

Speaker 6 (08:02):
So right now, we had an extra special guest who
is joining Jake Majors right now.

Speaker 1 (08:07):
Johday, how you doing, brother, I'm doing amazing. I'm doing
amazing and I'm blessed.

Speaker 6 (08:11):
Every time I see you, tell me you're gonna talk
to me later, and so it's later. It's been a
little bit later than usual. Usually every week we're talking. Yeah,
but today, tell me how you felt. We'll talk about
the interception and all that, But how did you feel
coming on on the field as a senior, first last game?

Speaker 1 (08:28):
Getting it done today? It was amazing, Just a blessing.

Speaker 9 (08:31):
I try to tell myself and try to tell the
guys in the DV room the corners, just don't take
you for granted, like it's gonna go by quick, and
I seen it last year. It just goes out quick
in a blink of eye, and just the decisions on
you have to make in the real world and things
like that. So just just kind of be president being
the moment and don't take anything for granted.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Hey, Johnny Craig and Roger upstairs, take us through the interception.
We played the highlight coming out of what you saw
and how you tracked into it and got yourself a
nice return as well.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
It was a trick play.

Speaker 9 (08:58):
I stayed home for a little bit to make sure
the receiver on my side didn't do a will or anything.
But at the end of the day, I'm wearing seven,
so I got to make plays like Huff.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
So I got a hard task. I got a hard task.

Speaker 9 (09:08):
So I'm I'm just trying to be the best version
of myself on and off the field and represent Huff
just in a tremendous way.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
Does he give you grief about that about since you
went to seven, about how you've got to represent like
he did.

Speaker 9 (09:19):
I mean, he tell me that was a terrible job.
I should have scored. He said he would have scored.
So I didn't do.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
A good good enough job.

Speaker 8 (09:26):
Hey, John ed, this is a Colorado State quarterback that
threw up for over thirty four hundred yards last last season.
You guys hold him to fifty nine, them to seventy
four yards passing in a game where they were going
to have to do something through the year.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
How big of an effort was that from you and
your guys.

Speaker 9 (09:43):
I mean, that was just a tremendous job. I mean,
like Gas, I know they tried to shot on Gavin
Holmes on a go ball. I mean that was a
tremendous defense by Gas. So that's an exposive play that
we stopped right there. Man, He had another exposive play
on a PBu on a third down, So just kind
of stacking those, stacking those exposed plays, exposive plays and
making sure they don't get those through and keeping them

(10:05):
and keeping them to do checkdowns and things like that.
And we had an accessful day on the perimeter with
aunt Jalen Gibbo saying the perimeter and things like that,
and the whole D line just just playing ball and
everybody flying around and having good eyes and playing as
a team and as a family.

Speaker 3 (10:20):
Jaday.

Speaker 6 (10:21):
In the off season, there was a lot of talk
about the secondary. Everybody was asking the questions, what about this,
what about that?

Speaker 1 (10:27):
What did you see today? And what do you think
your performance today?

Speaker 9 (10:31):
Said about that, I mean I've seen first it starts
off with the line and the D line and Surrel
and those guys. Sorell's leading those guys, and it was
a tremendous job on how they set the perimeter, and
then it kind of gets to the second level with
aunt Hill just flying everywhere, even more Blackwell come in
and making plays and David Benda making plays. So everybody's
just playing at a consistency level of effort. And when
you can't coach effort, and we talk effort first, so

(10:53):
it's effort before anything, before you get to play call
and those things like that. So I've seen everybody playing
with tremendous effort today and that's what we need throughout
the entire sea.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
Hey, jo A, Jake just told us how excited he
is and how much he's looking forward to going up
to ann Arbor for that matchup with Michigan. Say the same,
safe to say the same for you most definitely.

Speaker 9 (11:09):
I mean, I'm died in I'm died in a night
with It's how I'll be watching those guys tonight and
just kind of understanding the respect level. I mean, I mean,
they just they're the defendant champs, so they're gonna come
with and we got to make sure that we bring
our best. And it starts now. It doesn't start it
doesn't start on Monday. It starts now. And what you
do right now in today's preparation just take care of
your body and hydrating and things like that to get
ready for Monday.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
So all right, so there it is, Yeah, starting now,
as he says, the preparation, We'll be back to wrap
up today's edition of the program.
