Speaker 1 (00:00):
We continue on sports Medio AM thirteen hundred the zone
on the tax line. You know, we always hear whenever
we talk with Teper, we always hear from our Permian Panthers.
And my props to my Permian Panthers for the first
ever victory of the Plane of Wildcats. They lost twice
in the state semifinals, once in the finals. I love
you to death. That is a an incorrection. They never
played Plane in the state championship game. Think about it.
(00:21):
It had to be Region one against Region two, remember,
so it'd be semi five. I think they played him
in the quarterfinal and it was back several years ago.
Maybe it was Gerald Brents's final year as the head
coach at Planel. I can't remember, but that and might
but anyway it was. It was in like a quarterfinal.
(00:42):
And then of course they had the two semifinals you mentioned.
They were epic, epic games. Nineteen seventy seven, it played
in the state semifinals. Permian won the neutral home flip
and elected to play Jones Stadium in Lubbock where Texas
Tech play and Plano won three to nothing. Then they
(01:04):
met the next year and because of the aisles rule
that you know, if you lose a flip, you have
to go to the other guy's place or in this
case neutral home the next year if it happens within
a five year time window. And it happened the next year.
So the next year was at Texas Stadium and the
final was six to three Plano in that one. So
(01:26):
it was incredible in that game, by the way, And
I had the old coach who Kim Purcell, who is
part of our Friday night crew for television, but he
was an assistant coach on Tom Kimbro's staff in nineteen
seventy seven and seventy eight, and he told the storybell
(01:47):
they had one very speedy defensive back who blocked one
field goal attempt and then they moved him around the
other side and blocked a second one later in the game.
So Plano won both of those semi final games. In
seventy seven, they won the state championship. They went on
the next week and they beat portin hs Groves, which
to this day is still the highest attendance for a
(02:08):
single game session for a state championship for nine hundred
fifty three at Texas Stdium. I know they had back
several years ago, when I think when Yulos Trinity was
in there and Allen was in there and they had
all these other ones, they had to combined the tenants
where it was like sixty one thousand or something. But
that's when they had three games. You know, they're at
Jerry World, so it's hard to singularly set it apart.
(02:32):
The next year when plain O beat Permian and got
to the finals, they lost to Houston Strafford, who had
a running back by the name of Craig James. They
won twenty nine to thirteen in the Astrodome. On that one.
A couple other high school football I mean a couple
other Texas football notes. He was pretty good high school
football player at Detton. Ryan was Anthony Hill, but now,
of course in his sophomore season at the University of Texas,
(02:55):
and he was asked how it felt to move inside.
I didn't get his first game under his belt as
middle linebacker. Feel good.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
I've been doing it a light and practice, so it
kind of just felt like just a normal day and
practice is communicating, getting better, getting the lunch, so it
it felt pretty good.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
He had a big tackle for loss early in the game.
Did you feel like it's set the tone for the
rest of the content.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
That felt like you did kind of set the tone.
As one of the leaders, and one of the few
leaders on the team, I feel like we kind of
have to set the tone for the defense. And we've
been watching that play on film for like since since
the first starting, So birth did come to first play
the game. It kind of was just like, oh wow,
they actually ran it, So it feel kind of good
for that happening.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
And then somebody asked him, you looked fast out there,
maybe even faster. Did you feel faster?
Speaker 2 (03:37):
I feel like I'm playing faster because I kind of
understand what's what's going on, understanding concepts, understand Rensking, So
I feel like I'm playing faster and moving at a
better pace.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Okay, all right, that's that's pretty cool. All right, Well,
we'll hear some more from him, and obviously we'll we'll
hear some more from Matthew Golden coming up next hour
as well. But we'll be back to wrap up hour
number two here on sports Radio AAM thirteen under the
Zone of the Guy. Her radio app
