Speaker 1 (00:00):
Here is our number three of this program here on
sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone and where you
can always listen to us for free on the iHeartRadio app.
Greg Way alongside the producer Cameron Parker.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Glad to have you with us.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
Coming up in a few minutes, we'll visit with Roger Wallace,
my broadcast partner in long worn football games and of
course sports director of kate x a N And they
have their Thursday night high school football telecast tonight on KBVO.
That comes your way at seven o'clock District twenty five
six eight matchup between Vandergrift and Stony Point. It is
(00:31):
only fair and right that I also point out that
Cameron Parker has quite the matchup laid before him. The
Wise Wolves at the Tigers of A and M consolidated
at the field in Flugerville. Well, you've just gotten real
comfy over there at the field these first three ball games,
(00:52):
because that's where you were the first two weeks, right.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Yeah, I think it's where I'm going to be for
most of the season. Actually, they have a press box
credential form there. I walk in and the everyone at
the stadium knows, so I am good to see you again.
You know we're asking about families and pets and all
of that, and you know, how is the family barber yea,
all that good stuff. So love the field, love the
staff there. It's it's you know, about twenty minutes away
(01:17):
from where I live in Round Rock, depending on the traffic,
because thirty five has been an absolute disaster. But with
that was standing. Love being at the field, and boy,
what a fun matchup this week. To top ten teams,
you got Weiss, who went from six A to five
A this season after winning their district last season. A
and M Consolidated, which has been a great program second
(01:39):
year under Brandon Schmid. They got Will Harget who's been
there I think for ten years. You know, his dad
played quarterback at A and M. His grandpa played quarterback
at A and M. Continuing that tradition at quarterback at
College Station. So it should be a really fun game.
And it's crazy to think, Craig, this is a district game,
and not only a district game, but also it's a
(02:01):
game in a week three and for Consolidated, they played
College Station next week.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
They are tribals.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
They've already played forty the week before. They played Lake
Delt in Week one, so a really tough schedule. But yeah,
they have Weiss and College Station who probably going to
be one of them is going to be a district champion.
That one's going to finish second or third. And they
consolid who's also going to be in that top three.
So what a really schedule that's front loaded for Consolidated
(02:30):
and a team that's replacing a lot offensive lineman. And
then Wise who has got a lot of talent. I
mean Adrian Wolson, the Arizona State commit, and the biggest story,
their quarterback goes down in scrimmage. Their senior quarterback brown
for the he's done for the entire year, bringing in
a freshman Jackson Shad, who had never played a snap
of quarterback in the farster level before. You have coach
Fernon Hughes who told Rick Kenttoo The Statesman that I
(02:52):
one hundred percent thought our season was over with And
Shad has played incredible. He played so good last week
in their win that Houston University Houston offered him a
scholarship a freshman after just two weeks of being a
farsity quarterback.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
I can't wait for this game.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
All five feet ten inches, one hundred and sixty pounds
of him something like that. So yeah, that'll be really good.
We'll get obviously, we'll get Roger Wallis's take on the matchup.
He has also a district opener tonight for Vandergriff and
Stony Point. And then, and you're gonna hear me say this.
(03:28):
I'm gonna say this to Roger that really and truly
the Greater Austin in Central Texas area is really a
hotbed this weekend. It's always good, but it truly is
a hotbed of headline matchups in high school football across
the state of Texas. This week we visited about it
with Greg Tepper, managing editor of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
(03:51):
A couple of days ago, when you consider the matchup
you have tonight cam between Weiss and am N consolidated.
When you consider that one, when you consider LBJ against Wimberley,
LBJ dropping remember from five A D two and going
back into the enrollment, that makes more sense for them.
(04:11):
But in the past what they had to do was
it was purely for district and economical purposes with the
AISD to remain a five A Division two team. Now
they're back where their enrollment numbers are much more in
line with their district opponents. But of course they're going
to be outstanding in their district and have a chance
to play well, but they're going to get pushed by Wimberley.
(04:35):
I'm really curious to see how this one comes out.
Wimberley has looked good early on, and it's it's kind
of made you wonder, you know what, you know, how
good might this matchup? But be between LBJ and Liberty Hill.
In fact, in case you're wondering, because I wonder about
(04:57):
such things and I do check it quite often. Wimberley
according to the computer and playing at LBJ, what would
you think the computer would say about that matchup?
Speaker 3 (05:15):
Hmmm, LBJ minus six.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
You're not far off. The computer does like LBJ.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
They like them by three, okay, and I could see
it being a three point game. It could be really
really good, that's what the computer says. Anyway, according to
Jerry Forrest and Pigskin Prep and there and the computer,
that could be a really entertaining matchup.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Mart. So you have those two.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
The game that Cameron's calling tonight weis against A and
M consolidated. Then you have LBJ and Wimberley tomorrow night
at Nelson Field. Also tomorrow, how about Westlake and a
Taska Sita meaning up and of course Westlake is two
and zero. Tony Salazar thought that they were a little
(06:02):
less than top notch their first week in pulling away
to win that Thursday night season opener over Prosper, a
pretty good football team. Then West League went out and
just wiped wiped out Sam Benita.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
They beat them sixty three to nothing.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
But take note of a task of Sita which hammered
Katie last week to hand them their first law. So
it's a pair of two. And I was computer, by
the way, likes West League by ten points in this game.
But it has the.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
Potential to be a good one. So anyway, those are
the matchups.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
That are all in the Greater Austin and Central Texas area,
which are drawing a lot of attention across the state,
not just in the Austin area but across the state
as well. All right, now, I want to jump to
college for a few moments here and talk about there
are two Thursday night games involving Division one FBS programs.
(07:04):
Both are out of the Sun Belt Conference. One of
those is in Mobile, Alabama, where it is expected that
Major Applewhite will earn his first.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
Victory as head coach.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
As South Alabama will host Northwestern State of Louisiana and
Northwestern State not a good FCS program, South Alabama should
be able to get.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
You know.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
In fact, the betting line isn't just computer. The betting
lines right now have South Alabama an zero to two
South Alabama team that lost to North Texas and lost
to Ohio. They have the betting line is South Alabama
by thirty eight points because Northwestern State is not good.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
They have.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
Struggled quite a bit and they're in the Southland Conference
and an FCS program, And in fact, the Demons.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
Lost last week to Prairie View.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
They lost, they got destroyed by Tulsa and then lost
by six to Prairie View. So that's why South Alabama
is expected.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
To get its first win. All right.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
So that's one of the games that's an ESPN Plus telecast.
The other game, which is on ESPN is Arizona State
on the road at Texas State. They're in San Marcus
tonight to take on the Bobcats, and the betting line
(08:35):
has Texas State favored by a.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
Point and a half. How about that?
Speaker 1 (08:40):
Now here's my question, and I don't know that we
could even dig up the answer to this, but the
question is, has Texas State ever been favored against a
Power four opponent or in the days of Power five
when the Pac twelve was whole, and as we talked
about in the two o'clock hour, they're trying to get
(09:03):
whole by the addition of those six programs are gonna
add But has Texas State ever been favored against a
Power four or Power five opponent before? I'm gonna guess no,
I could be wrong, but against a Power four or
Power five opponent, I don't think it's ever happened. And
(09:25):
the betting line is like a point and a half,
so it'd be interesting to see how that is. But
that is a nod to GJ. Kinney and what the
Bobcats did in summarily dispatching UTSA forty nine to ten
last Saturday in San Marcus, And of course UTSA will
(09:45):
be in Austin to play the Longhorns on Saturday evening,
so it's a nod to that and Arizona State. By
the way, it's not like they're a disaster. Sun Devils
are two and zero. They beat Wyomingham the league forty
eight to seven, and they beat Mississippi State. They beat
an SEC school. Both of those games were home games,
(10:07):
and they beat Mississippi State thirty to twenty three last week.
But I can't remember when Texas State has ever been
favored against a Power four Power five conference opponent before.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
I couldn't find anything in the last five years.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
So yeah, I don't think it's ever happened. I don't
think it's ever happened. And it was a SoundBite. I
heard it. Andrew Zimo played it during what he called
the Zimma Hour there when he was sitting in for
US in be four atlock hour yesterday. But he played
a sound bite from Kenny Dillingham, the head coach at
Arizona State, where he was talking about that somebody said
(10:46):
a trap game for Arizona State. He as a trap game.
We're not even favored. The trap is for Texas State,
it's not for us. He said, We're not favored in
the game, So how could be a trap game? So
it's gonna be a fascinating game and I'm going to
hustle down there when we get off the air. And
my good friend Tim Healy, who is the play by
(11:07):
play voice of the Arizona State Sun Devils, was unable
to bring his spotter on this trip. A spoder couldn't
make it, so I said, hey. He asked me if
I knew somebody who could do it, and I said,
I'll do it. I want to see a good college
football game, you know, one other outside of me actually
(11:27):
talking on the air and working college football game, don't
get me wrong, and enjoy all of those, love them
with all my heart, but it's also good to kind
of have a little bustman's holiday, so to speak, and
get a look at the game. Plus I always like
going down to Texas State down there for games as well,
so I'm going to be down there for that.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
All right.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
Up next, we'll talk some college football, Longhorn football, also
high school football with Roger Wallace, my broadcast partner on
Longhorn Football broadcast, and of course sports director of KXAN.
They have a high school game tonight on KBVO. So
we'll do all of that and more when we continue
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone in the iHeartRadio app.
