Speaker 1 (00:00):
So it is our number two of the program, Craig Wade,
joined by the producer Cameron Parker. I touched on this
very very briefly at the at the top of the
show and I said we would get into it later.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Well here's later. So here we are ready to get
into this.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
And it gets into a larger conversation. And when I'm
talking about is concussion protocol. Now we all we did
was mentioned in the first hour about the Bills getting
the win over the Miami Dolphins last night, but the
larger issue, it's almost like the game was like an afterthought,

(00:40):
especially once to a tongue of Iloa went out with
the concussion in the third quarter last night. And you know,
I was watching Good Morning Football over time and it
was almost like it was almost like like a funeral
procession they you know, And and I understand the serious

(01:01):
nature of this deal, no question about it. We've talked
about it a lot, but it's it's it's it's a
serious discussion. And and Mike McDaniel told reporters this morning
he's not going to put a timeline onto his recovery.
He said he has to use the quote zero idea.

(01:23):
What any timetable might be and doesn't want to put
that sort of pressure on.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Tongue of Aloa. The quote was, first.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
And foremost, I'm not assessing the injury through the lens
of all right, so what does this mean for him playing?

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Really? For me, I know the.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Facts are that it's important that he gets healthy day
by day, and in that the best thing I can
do is not try to assess what this even means
from a football standpoint, because reporters they have a job
to do. And when they went into that media availability
this morning, they asked McDaniels. They asked McDaniel, do you

(02:05):
have an update on Tua And at the time he
said no, he might still be sleeping. And then they
were like, do you have a timetable on what this
might mean? And that's when he launched into that and said,
I don't have a timetable for this, and I'm not
going to do it from a football perspective. He said,
I'm concerned about two of the man and really and truly, Cam,

(02:29):
that's what we heard. The guys in the locker room
on both sides for both Buffalo and Miami say they
were more concern about him as a man and less
and not so much the football player on this, because
it does it does put that real note of concern

(02:50):
on the It was thirty one ten in the third
quarter and Tongue of Aloha took off on a fourth
down run. He scrambled six yards and then he had
this collision with Damar Hamlin. We all know about Hamlin's background,
everything that happened with him. But he went down and
he walked off under his own power swiftly ruled out
to the concussion. But the scary thing is, and everybody

(03:15):
said this too, football you know whatever experts, but doctors
in health safety experts and things like that said that
collision should not have caused a concussion, and probably would
not have caused a concussion for someone who had one
or fewer concussions in their life. But given that two

(03:39):
us had some serious ones, that raises the more serious concern.
And then therefore, from the conversation turns to not just
timetable and when he might be back. The timetable is
more if he might be back or if he should
even return, And then it gets into things like, well,
who has to have the uncomfortable conversation with him about

(04:01):
maybe you should hang it up. Whether it's doctors and
or front office and or McDaniel and or family, does
the league have to get involved in all of this?
These sorts of tentacles come out of this because of
this collision last night.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
And remember, Craig, the NFL altered its concussion protocol because
of Tua and what happened in twenty twenty two when
he had those two or three concussions. So, as you mentioned,
once you have that first concussion, you're prone to get
more concussions. I have a close friend of mine who
played college soccer. He had five concussions during his time

(04:36):
playing soccer and had to retire his junior season because
doctors and coaches told him, we don't know what's going
to happen to you if you sustain another hit to
your head. And for Tua, we're all concerned about it.
I mean, Antonio Pierce, the Raiders head coach, is calling
for him to retire.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Now.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
It's to his decision if he wants to keep playing
or not keep playing. So I can't sit here and
say he needs to retire, because if he really wants
to keep playing football put himself through this, that's on him.
But you worry about his safety, and you worry just
just get down to it. I mean, if you slide down,
you can avoid that hit. He's putting them himself in
some really tough spots the way he runs. You look

(05:13):
at guys like Lamar Jackson and Jade Daniels and you wonder, man,
how have they not had so many concussions with the
way they like to run. But it's scary. I mean,
it turns into a point now where it's beyond football.
Cricket's about Tua's health in safety, and obviously the awareness
we have had with CTE and concussions over the last
few years has gotten to this point where you know,
we're emphasizing more players safety with head trauma and quarterback

(05:37):
hits and hits to the head. And you have a
player like Tua who it keeps happening to, and you
just you just worry about what could happen next to him.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
Yeah, And you mentioned the league, and I don't know
what they are legally capable of doing. I don't know
that they can force slash compell someone to retire if
but here's the big if. If he gets clean bill
of health. Now that's a relative term with the guy

(06:10):
who's had multiple concussions. He may pass all concussion protocols
and the cognizant test and all of that kind of
stuff may all be fine, but we also know that
once you have had one, you are more susceptible to

(06:32):
having another, and then another another.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
You mentioned your friend.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
I have an older brother who had on a bike
crack souf for a concussion. Then he just fell off
a snowboard and got a concussion at one point. In
other words, it would becoming more susceptible. Now, it doesn't
apply to every single person, and I'm not saying that,
and as you pointed out, Cam, it's ultimately to his

(06:55):
decision unless he's just flat out not cleared going forward.
But it does raise the question, and you're right, Antonio
Pierce raised the question. There's a lot of other people
who are speaking up and urging him to consider retiring.
Here's the other thing, and the NFL network folks of

(07:18):
the Good Morning Football folks came up with brought up
this conversation and they were reluctant to do it, and
I completely understand, but they said, even if we don't
bring this up, it is going to be brought up,
and discussed at length, at length, at length, and I'm
talking about his contract because he just signed a new deal.

(07:43):
So you know, it's like, okay, well the Dolphins have
paid a lot of money.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
What do they do?

Speaker 1 (07:48):
And there's this in that if he's just on injured list,
you got to pay him while he's on the injured
list if he's not retiring, So that gets brought up.
That is the more imper arsenal side of this, whereas
right now, right now, everyone is taking the proper I
think approach to this and talking to just about his

(08:11):
health and his well being and the options he has
to consider.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
Nobody's talking about that.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
But as the NFL network folks said, you know, you
know in the Dolphins front office, they're talking about that.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
They're talking about the future.

Speaker 1 (08:28):
I mean, right now, the future is Skyler Thompson. He's
going to have to be the quarterback for the next game.
Almost to state, yep.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
So it's it's a difficult conversation for anyone to have,
and it'sespecially going to be a difficult conversation for anybody
to have with Tua given you know, given what he
has undergone and the options that they have to consider.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
So anyway, there's that.

Speaker 1 (08:54):
I just wanted to lead off with that because, like
I said last hour, we touched on the Bills looking
good enough and.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
Solid enough to win.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
By the way, from the fantasy football perspective, big mistake
on my part did not start the Bills defense.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
Or Tyler Bass last night.

Speaker 1 (09:09):
I sat them to go with a Chiefs defense again
Cincinnati and digger the kicker this week, and it may
turn out to be okay but.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
Tough.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
But anyway, so Tua is out. We know for how long?
Who knows? The Bills are two and zero, So we'll
talk more about that going forward. Up next, we'll look
at some of the matchups for this thing, for this
Texas UTSA game. We'll do that and more when we
