Speaker 1 (00:04):
It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
Texas Longhorns in Hall of Fame Broadcasting, Craig Way.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
A Longhorns Monday here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
do the Zone, and as always, we're glad to have
you alongside as well, and as always we offer up
the opportunity for you to text the program. You can
text the program by texting the word Texas followed by

(00:43):
your question or comment to eight one.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Five three zero.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
So you text the word Texas followed by your question
or comment to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging
and data rates may apply. I will have to tell
you that I'm not surprised by this one bit because
it's our good friend, our Twitter savant CB, who wished
me a happy birthday today. He's always on top of
everybody's birthdays.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
He always is.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
He's always he always is. And Cameron wished me a
happy birthday when we got fired up today over there
on campus getting ready to go. So yeah, so it
was cool, So thank you, CB. I do appreciate that.
Here so we said the Cowboys reminded me of when
Denver came to Dallas a couple of years ago with
Teddy Bridgewater and demolished the Cowboys. Remember that said, I

(01:31):
think they scored thirty straight points to start the game. Also,
oh yeah, Tom Brady seemed way more comfortable in the
booth yesterday. And I will agree with you on that.
You haven't a chance. I had a chance to see
him because he's done two Cowboys games.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
But he did.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
He looked a lot more and you know what, I
think relaxed him a little bit. They had him on
do a live hit in Fox's pregame show, kind of
like when Roger and I pop on with you guys
on Long Orange Game Day and they had Gronk asked
him a question because he was in studio, and then
they did a little quiz about how well do you
know Tom Brady and Gronk failed miserably, probably up a

(02:08):
little bit. Yeah, I think so they use more relaxed.
I totally agree. I totally agree with you on that. Yeah,
And it did kind of look reminiscent of that Teddy
Bridgewater lead Denver blowout of Dallas a few years ago.
It's a good point off of that. And CB, thank
you for the birthday greetings. To appreciate that. All right now,
let's get to the sark press conference. We brought it

(02:31):
to you live this morning in its entirety to hear
some highlights from it. Started off is you know, of
course this is in case you didn't hear. Texas is
now the number one team in the country according to
the AP pole and getting thirty five of the first
place votes. I think Georgia got twenty three first place votes.
But Texas is number one in the latest AP Top

(02:52):
twenty five College football poll. There's still number two in
the coaches poll. Georgia is still number one. Texas to
Texas is number one, however, in the A people. So
here's long Worn's head coach Steve Sarkisian from the weekly
news conference, starting off with those opening thoughts.

Speaker 4 (03:07):
You know, I think just to reiterate a couple of
things from Saturday night, was just thinking Longhorn Nation. It
was a great atmosphere, and you know the fact that
they came early, they were everybody who's in their seats
for kickoff.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
You know that that stuff matters to us.

Speaker 4 (03:22):
And the fact that everybody stayed till the end, I
just think sends a great message for the type of
atmosphere we have at dk R. Now it's a great night.
We get another opportunity this Saturday night at seven o'clock,
looking forward to seeing everybody there. It's it's been a
it's been a great event. You know, our home games
from year one to year two, year three now into
year four have become a real event.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
And you know, it helps.

Speaker 4 (03:42):
When you play good football, but but the atmosphere has
been awesome, so thank everybody for that.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
Also this week, you know.

Speaker 4 (03:48):
We've got our Hall of Honor, and congratulations to all
those getting getting inducted as a member of y'all now
getting inducted alex okafor.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
Over there, it's getting inducted. It's congrats, buddy. It's awesome.

Speaker 4 (04:00):
So it should be a it should be a great
day for that, great weekend for that, and then also
a historic week, you know for women's soccer. Angie Kelly,
he's had a terrific season so far.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
They're undefeated.

Speaker 4 (04:10):
They kick off SEC at the University of Texas Thursday
versus Alabama at seven o'clock. I hope everybody can get
out there and support them with their mission and what
they're doing. You know, I think a couple of things
for us coming out of the ball game last week,
played seventy seven players again of our of our one
hundred and twenty six different guys score touchdowns, nine different

(04:31):
guys carried the football, eleven different guys you know, caught
a pass, and I think we had twenty eight different
players credit themselves with with a with a defensive stat.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Or or a tackle.

Speaker 4 (04:42):
So it's a lot of guys playing, a lot of
guys contributing that.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
That is big for us.

Speaker 4 (04:47):
It's critical for us that we continue to develop our
players and continue to to work on our depth because
our depth is getting tested at some very specific positions,
most notably at quarterback with quick that Quinn first of all,
prior to the injury is having a really good football game.
I think he was like fourteen to sixteen, was very efficient,

(05:07):
was playing at a high level. There was a non
contact deal which which we touched on, you know, the
oblique strain there. Next week, when you guys get your
injury report on next Wednesday, that officially begins. He would
be listed as questionable. Okay, so it's really uh, you know,
we're gonna monitor him day to day and see what
this looks like. But he would be questionable for Saturday

(05:28):
on the report for next week, so we'll see.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
How that goes. And on the flip side of that,
it was.

Speaker 4 (05:32):
A great opportunity for Arch to to have to come
in off the bench. When you're not hey, next series,
you're in some as a backup, you have to be
ready to go. I thought Arch performed really really well
for so that you know, he ran our offense, he looked,
he looks poised and composed. You know, there was some
learning curves in there, a couple of things to learn from,

(05:52):
but at the end of the day, thought he played
at a high level and he was getting some of
the honors for that. So congratulations to him on that.
And I think just as a team, that was really
a round of a game of complimentary football. You know, offensively,
we created explosive plays. I think we averaged a little
over nine yards of play, and then defensively, you know,
I think we held in the three point eight yards
per play, and that's with a fifty three yard touchdown

(06:15):
run that was really just kind of a misfit and
a bust on our part. I love the fact that
when we did have the sudden change on the interception,
our defense comes out and gets a stop on third
and one, and then on fourth and one to get
the ball right back. It was a heck of a
play on third down by Alfred Collins and then a
really nice play on the fourth down with John ay Barn.
They were trying to pitch that ball of the edge,

(06:35):
set in the edge, and then us rally into the football.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
So there was a lot of really good things.

Speaker 4 (06:41):
But like today, I noticed with our coaches and in
our meetings, our coaches are coaching hard. You know, they're
they're they're they're being really demanding of our guys right now.
And the appreciation I have for our players is that
they're accepting the tough coaching and they they're they're being
really coachable. We know we're not a finished product. We
know we've got to do. We know we're gonna have

(07:01):
to play better, and that's that's what we say it
every every time. You know, better never rests, and we've
got to continue to strive to improve.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
And I think our football team is doing that right now.

Speaker 4 (07:10):
Obviously, we got Ulm coming in two and oh football team.
I think coach Vince has done a terrific job. You know,
those guys were two and ten a year ago he
took over. They're two and oh right now. They they
believe in hard, nos tough football. They're gonna run the ball,
they're gonna utilize the play action pass to take their
shots at you. They play good defense, and so that
they're just playing sound, good football with a lot of

(07:31):
new faces and transfers. So we've got to prepare accordingly
to put our best foot for Saturday night.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
All right, those are the opening comments from Shark nowtle
the questions, and one of the first one out of
game was about the young freshman from Duncanville off the
defensive line, Colin Simmons, wreaking havoc and making an impact early.

Speaker 4 (07:50):
No, I think Colin has steadily improved, you know, from
where he was in spring ball to where he was
in training camp, to where he was in week one
to where he is now going into week four. Or
he has steadily improved his craft, and a lot of
that comes with knowing what to do and having confidence
in what to do. Clearly, he's an impactful player when
he gets to rush the passer.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
You know, our goal for him is.

Speaker 4 (08:13):
To obviously make him the most complete player that we
can make him. And so having the ability to play
the run and what that looks like, so that he
can be a real every down player that way and
impact the game because he has the skill set to
do that. It's kind of a little reminiscent of where
Anthony Hill was maybe a year ago, of what Anthony
was doing his ability to.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
Rush the passer.

Speaker 4 (08:34):
But then as he's grown and now we see what
Anthony is for us. You know, he's getting eleven and
twelve tackles a game, and you know, sideline the sideline
and those types of things.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
So Colin's got a bright future. He's off to a
good start.

Speaker 4 (08:44):
But more importantly, I just like the work ethic and
the focus that he has of trying to improve and
get better.

Speaker 3 (08:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
So now there's that the elephant in the room, the
number one ranking thing, and how his guys handle and
how his team handles it, how the coaches handled all
of that stuff about being number one.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
Now more than ever.

Speaker 4 (09:03):
And I don't I don't want to take anything away
from the polls because of the twelve team playoff. It
really doesn't matter, you know, and we say it all
the time as a team, it's not really what other
people think of us. It's about what we do and
we've got to perform and and we've got to we've
got to prepare to perform because the way this is
set up. Back in the day, the polls were huge

(09:25):
because the polls dictated who got to play for a
national championship and ultimately who won the national championship. Nowadays,
you got to go earn it. And and so I
think it's it's it's it's good to show that, hey,
what we're capable of, but at the end of the day,
we're gonna have to go earn this thing. And uh,
the mission is far far from over. We we've got
we've got a long way to go. So again, I

(09:48):
our guys, I don't even think they're they talk about it. You'll,
you'll bring it up to them when they get up here.
But I don't think like they're not sitting in the
locker room talking about it. They're they're focused on what
they need to do to improve and and you know,
giving each other a hard time about stuff in the game,
because that's what you do in the locker room. You know,
they're probably making fun of Ethan Burk's dive into the
end zone and so on, and so forth. That's what
teams do. I just don't think they're consumed with it.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
Yeah, you had a feeling probably the three main topics
or questions that we're going to be asked were the
number one ranking, Arch Banning, and Quinn Ewers. You know,
even though he addressed that stuff in the opening statement,
and then of course the question right there about the
number one ranking, and then of course as it circles
back around Arch and his preparedness and being ready to go,

(10:32):
I don't do anything.

Speaker 3 (10:34):
Arch is just another guy on our team.

Speaker 4 (10:37):
And the reason I'm able to do that is because
that's who Arch is.

Speaker 3 (10:40):
Every day Arch does. He's a selfless teammate.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
You know.

Speaker 4 (10:45):
He cares about the guys on the team. He cares
about Quinn. They've got a great relationship. He works his
tail off. He wants to play good football for them
because he knows how hard everybody's working. So I literally
don't address it with him. I don't address it with
the team. He's just part of the team, you know.
And I think that's been the approach. If you even
go back to the recruiting process, it was never about

(11:05):
the name. It was about the player and the ability
and the parents and so on and so forth, and
so that's made it actually pretty easy that we don't
have to address it. And I think from Quinn's perspective,
I think Quinn he just wants to keep playing, you know,
I mean he didn't. Nobody wants to have to come
out of a game because you get injured. But I

(11:26):
think if you ask Quinn today, he's fired up for
Arch because he knows how hard Arch has been working.
I mean, I go back to this all the time
you all were there for that first Spring game. He
didn't play very good, and so the growth that he's
shown and the ability to work at his craft, there's
a real level of appreciation I think from Quinn to Arch,
but also Arch to Quinn because I know Arch has

(11:47):
been their supporting Quinn through his journey as well. So
that's the sign of a great room and a sign
of a good team.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
Yeah, the question was about what does he have to
say to Arch? What does he have to say to Quinn?
He said, I don't have to do anything. They know
what the deal is, and that includes also win staying,
you know, committed to the moment and understanding the process.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
I think the one thing about Quinn.

Speaker 4 (12:07):
He's always staying dialed in, you know, and he's always
he's a.

Speaker 3 (12:11):
Really observant guy.

Speaker 4 (12:12):
Uh, even when he's healthy and the twos go in.
I mean, he's always watching the twos. He's always taken,
you know, taking the metal reps. And so I think
that's that's the natural trait that he has, you know,
when he's out and you know, he's definitely getting all
the mental reps. He prepares as if he's you know,
playing each week. But he's also diligent with his recovery.
And I think that's why when he comes back, he

(12:34):
comes back and performs at a high level.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
All Right, we'll hear more from Sar coming up in
the three o'clock hour and the four o'clock hour up next.
Inconceivable for a Monday that included something that happened yesterday
in the National Football League. We'll continue on sports Radio
