Speaker 1 (00:04):
Back to the Craig Ways.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Connect with Craig through the text line by text Team
Texas to eight one five three zero followed by your message.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
Standard message and data rates may apply here on this
long WRNS Monday. As we roll on through this Monday afternoon,
somebody letting us know on the text line the Biship
taken more documentaries called BS High. That's good to know.
(00:35):
That's good to know. I will that's the appointment viewing.
I'll definitely make sure to take a look at that
and see that. And yes, they're not going to they're
Duncanville's not And Duncanville was supposed to play them last
year and he got canceled. That was one of the
(00:56):
games that got canceled. That was supposed to be one
of the ones or a year before. Whatever it was anyway,
didn't didn't happen. It it's a bad deal. It was
a bad deal for them. Like you said, you had
to feel sorry for the kids who kind of got
suckered into that whole thing.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Yes, such a sad story, especially when you're using seventeen, sixteen,
fifteen year old kids to make money and you have
the move across the country on just on a lie
does not sit right with me or probably anyone else
that watched that document, because they're chasing that dream. College
(01:29):
football teams, of course, are chasing the dream of winning
a national title. Texas moved to number one in the
Top twenty five the AP Top twenty five college rankings.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
There're still number two in the coaches poll, behind Georgia.
Georgia number two now in the AP. ESPN today had
its playoff predictor out for fans, but also right now
what their percentages are of each team's making the playoffs.
Have you seen this? I have not just guess at
(02:01):
what they say Texas to make the playoffs, to make
the playoffs eighty three percent, you'd have to go up
really okay, ninety percent, ninety one ninety one percent. Right
now they have Alabama second and eighty four percent. Ohio
(02:22):
State third at seventy eight percent, Tennessee fourth at seventy
three percent, Georgia seventy percent. Remember Georgia has to come
to Austin. That's probably why that's like it is, Ole
miss at seventy percent, Miami at fifty three percent, Oregon
at forty nine percent, Penn State forty eight percent, Missouri
forty six percent, Notre Dame thirty eight percent, UCF thirty
(02:43):
seven percent. After that one over tc won stateway nine.
I mean they were down by what twenty twenty eight
to seven, twenty eight to seven, they had what two
or three kicks blocked or punts free, something weird and
still came back. And kJ Jefferson, who did a number
on Texas years ago, did one on TCU and that
come back in the fourth quarter. USC at thirty six percent,
(03:06):
Case stayed at thirty four percent, Louisville at twenty seven percent,
Boise State at twenty four percent, Washington State. How about
them winning the Apple Cup over Washington twenty four percent, Indiana,
which throttled UCLA late that was a former PAC twelve
after dark game twenty three percent, Clemson twenty three percent,
(03:27):
Memphis after the winner for Florida State at twenty two percent,
of Oklahoma State twenty percent, UNLV eighteen percent, Utah fifteen percent,
Oklahoma fourteen percent. Now, the Sooners are hosting Tennessee this
week and a win would ratchet up those chances. College
(03:47):
Game Day is going to be a Norman this week,
so we'll see how that goes This is This is
their stand up and be counted moment in the SEC,
more so than the Red River game, because we know
the Red River rivalry stands on its own. But they're
gonna have to prove they can win some games against
big time opponents, especially at home, because they haven't played
that well at home the last two weeks against Houston
(04:09):
and two Lane. So this is a big moment for them.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Yeah, and we talked about how tax is getting some
flak for their schedule Tennessee as well in Chattanooga, Kent State,
NC State. But I tell you what their quarterback, I'm
gonna butcher. His name Iam Olivia.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Leva.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
How do you say? I think it's Leva Leva. Yeah,
he's been phenomenal. He's been a lot of fun to
watch so far this season. And they have a really
really good offensive line in defensive line, I think the
biggest knock against Old Miss might be the physicality in
the trenches. You know, Jackson Dart's good. You know they
have the playmakers. But I think Tennessee is a more
well built team then most people really understand. And sorry,
(04:50):
Sooner fans, I think we're gonna see that this week.
I don't know what the line is for this game.
I'll check on it real quick. But I tell you what,
I think Oklahoma is in for some trouble. Even point favorite,
I don't know. I think Tennessee is going to open
some eyes this week. He was a seven point favorite Tennessee. Okay,
start to say if Oklahoma is a seven point favor
(05:11):
and it's early, but I mean, you know, they beat Temple.
Oklahoma did, but Houston who came out to the final drive.
Houston had a chance to win that game in tu Lane.
I know it says thirty four to nineteen, but it
was what twenty twenty four? Twenty four to nineteen to
Lane had the football and a chance to go down
and take the lead with what four five minutes ago
in that game, and they pulled away late. I think
(05:31):
there was a an interception or fumble towards the end.
Actually there was an interception in a fumble and turnover
on downs in which Ou scored ten points off of
So I don't know. I think Tennessee is gonna put
the hurt on Ou this week.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
The ESPN Power Rankings also came out in addition to
the polls, and Texas is sitting on top of the
power rankings at number one. It went from two to
number one. Georgia went from number one to number two.
Alabama up four spots from seven to three after that
road win at Wisconsin. Tennessee up a spot from five
to four. These are the power rankings. Ohio State dropped
(06:09):
from two to five, so they didn't They didn't play
last night. They had Marshall coming into Columbus this week.
Miami held at number six, Ole miss fell from four
to seven. They won at wake Forest forty to six.
It was a little It was a game for a
little while usc held at eight. Missouri went up one
(06:32):
spot from ten to nine, and Missouri fell one spot
from nine to ten. This is These are the ESPN
power rankings. Oregon held at eleven, Kansas State went up
from fourteen to twelve. Oklahoma State held at thirteen. Utah
dropped from twelve to fourteen. Oklahoma went up a spot
from sixteen to fifteen. It was twenty four to nineteen.
That two lane game was seven minutes to go.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
You mentioned Kansas State. We didn't get a tence to
talk about it because they played Friday night. Yeah, thirty
one seven win over Arizona. They were able to cut
down on McMillan. I mean, he still had one hundred
and thirty eight eight yards, but looked pretty good. Kansasitate
defense did, and that Big twelve team to come out.
We were headed towards a Utah Kansas State Big Toal championship.
(07:16):
Perhaps they don't play to the this season in the
regular season, so it'd be fun to see k State
and Utah go at it.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
Michigan dropped from fifteen to sixteen. They'd been Davis Warren
Finally yeah for this week. Alex Horsey starting quarterback. He
had three passes picked off. He's got six picks, So
Alex Hordy taken over there. Clemson up from nineteen to seventeen.
Nebraska up from twenty two to eighteen. They're getting excited
out there in Lincoln. Louisville dropped from eighteen to nineteen,
(07:46):
notre dating up one spot from twenty one to twenty,
LSU Dallas spot from twenty to twenty one, Memphis from
up from twenty four to twenty two. I was stayed
held at twenty three. Illinois State Northern Illinois got in
and they weren't ranked last week, even though they the
power pole, right and the power yeah, the power rankings,
(08:06):
and then Illinois hold again twenty five.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
ELK Memphis is not ranked in the AP top twenty five,
which is weird because they're three.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
No, yeah, why are they not ranked? But Clemson is
at one to one? Do you break? Yeah? I don't
understand that. I don't understand. I thought for sure they
would get into that. Let's hear from Sark some more
conversation with the Longhorns head coach from the news conference
ort earlier today here on sports Radio AM thirteen under
the Zone. A couple other questions for Sark. One of
(08:34):
those was third down defense because it has been really
solid for Texas in the first three ball games, is
on third down, getting the defense off the field and
third down. And Sark was asked about that third down defense.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Well, I think I think one is the players knowing
what calls to expect, and then how we want to
play those calls. Whether they're pressure is, whether it's coverage,
whether it's based off the formation, whether it's the how
we're rushing the passer, do we have a game involved all.
I think it all adds up. But I also think
some of that is a credit to PK, you know.
(09:08):
And and part of the reason, you know, I wanted
to hire him early on was because you don't really
he doesn't give you the rhythm on third down like
some guys you can, you can get a sense and a
feel of Okay, this is what the next call is
going to be. He'll put calls out there, and he'll
call things, and he'll save a call for the second
half on a critical third down that will catch you
off guard. It's one of his one of his best
(09:30):
traits that he has. But then it's the players executing
that call. And so I think it goes hand in hand,
the front tied together with the back end. But we've
been a very good short yardist defense over the years
and that showed up again Saturday, and that those are
still third down wins too, but also getting off the
field on those obvious passing downs as critical as well.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
Yeah, and we've seen that early on in this season.
Sark was also about asked another arch banding question, and
this was about uh Arch's propensity to t earn one
way on the drop back, set his feet and then fire,
and he was asked about the unique look that presents, you.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
Know, anytime. You know, it's just kind of a subtle
pocket movement, meaning you know, sometimes you don't always want
your quarterback, you know, seven yards directly behind the center
because it's sooner or later the rushers right they're finding
their rhythm and their timing to get there. And so
sometimes when you run real like his first play, he's
out of the pocket, that changes the launch point. Sometimes
(10:27):
when you run the little half roll stuff, that's changing
the launch point, that's changing the rush angles for the rushers.
But also there's protection in there involved too, And on
that play, we actually pulled DJ Campbell out in front
of him. So you're changing protections, you're changing the launch point.
You're just trying to make your quarterback not a sitting
duck in one spot. And that more importantly in the
NFL is as much and more than anything, because those
(10:49):
pass wresters are so good. I think that's why you
see so much of that with the brock perties and
you know that style of offense that those guys type you,
especially in San Francisco.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
Okay, financially, then everybody's going to want to know a
little more about Quinn's situation. Sark has already mentioned he's questionable,
questionable for questionable for this week, questionable for next week,
regardless of his progress this week, at least right now questionable.
So he was asked with is there some sort of
(11:20):
a cutoff time? And this relates specifically to reps? And
I probably didn't do a really good job of explaining,
but you only have two hundred and forty characters on X. Anyway,
I'll explain more about what Sark's answer was, if you
get to a cutoff point with regard to the reps
(11:40):
going more toward Arch and less toward Quinn based on
his physical progress during the week.
Speaker 3 (11:48):
Yes, we'll definitely alter that. And again that's going to
be day to day and Quinn will be day to day.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
Okay, So I pretty much typed it in like that,
and immediately or shortly there after's somebody respond on the
X like that's weird. Why wouldn't they just go it
and and give arts the reps and then blah blah blah,
And I said, no, it's not weird. It's pretty much
what he said. They would. They would monitor and see
(12:14):
it if if Quinn is unable look the thing about
an oblique, they'll know pretty quickly if he can throw
or not. That's not like an ankle or a knee.
The oblique affects your ability even to throw the football.
Keith Morland, when he's worked baseball games would be is
talked about how painful and uncomfortable an oblique injury can
(12:36):
be on trying to swing a bat. That's onnce. He
just came off the injured list for the Dodgers. He
spent two months on it because of a strained oblique.
There's nothing you can do about an oblique except let
it rest until he is kind of like the old
high ankle sprain thing. Nothing you can do about it. Fortunately,
it's not as severe a strain as some others have
(13:00):
been and can be like the ones I just mentioned,
But it's something you have to guard against. But they'll know.
They'll know when they get on the field tomorrow whether
or not he can throw much at all and or Wednesday.
Those are the two big Hey in the barn days
are going to be Tomorrow and Wednesday with regard to
practice and whether or not Quinn will have some availability
(13:22):
on that. He was also asked about seeing the growth
and development of this football team.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
Yeah, well, I'm seeing growth in development for sure, you know,
I mean we talked about Colin that's an easy one.
But I'm seeing development. I'll use an example Colton Vasik,
you know from where he's a year ago injury plagued
all the stuff to working himself into he's playing very
good football and he's going to earn himself more playing time.
To geez, I'm trying to think of an example of
(13:49):
another guy that would that would really stand out. But
even on the offensive line, like watching some of those
guys get in there later in the game of what
that looks like for them. So I'm looking for development.
Can I look at the tape from Saturday, compare it
to the tape from week one when a lot of
those guys played in Week one? Did they improve and
did they get better at some of the things we
wanted them to improve upon? And I think, you know,
(14:11):
it's not one hundred percent, but I would say the
percentage is pretty high that the majority of those guys
have improved from week one to week three.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
We just got to keep pushing them. Our friend and Collie,
Roger Wallace asked Sark about the other Sark, Brady Sarkasian,
who got into the ball game and got credit for
half credit on a tackle with another Longhorn as well.
I asked Sark in the post game if it's okay
if we call him B Sark, and since he's Brady Sarkisian,
(14:38):
somebody said that we just should call him Baby Sark,
like baby Shark. Now we're not going there the B Sark.
He goes, oh, yeah, I love that, that'd be great.
But he was asked for his feelings as a dad
when he got to step outside the shell of the
coach for a moment. I love this answer and be
and be a dad while watching his son.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
That was really cool.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
You know.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
In uh in week one he went in that game too,
I was still like in coach mode, you know, and
I'm probably ripping somebody's ass on the headset while it
was all going on. But this Saturday, when I saw
him go in, I didn't They didn't tell me. I
just looked up and I saw thirty two in and
I literally I took my headset off. I didn't want
to hear the chatter. I didn't want to hear the call.
(15:23):
I just wanted to watch him play football, you know,
like like a dad. And after two plays then I
yelled down at the defensive staff. Can we blitz thirty two?
Can we get the guy or now? But I was
like a dad would be in the stands.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
Why isn't me blitzing?
Speaker 2 (15:37):
You know what?
Speaker 3 (15:38):
But you know what? What what?
Speaker 1 (15:39):
Don't throw it to that guy? Run that?
Speaker 3 (15:41):
So that was fun for me, I really did. I
had a lot of fun and I was I was
proud of him. You know, he got kind of got
registered in there for half a tackle. So, hey, it's
an honor to play football at University of Texas. And
it doesn't matter if you're a frontline, five star recruit
or for your walk on. These guys grind and they
work hard. And Brady's no different. He has to work
hard every day and we hold him accountable the same
(16:03):
standards as everybody else. And so when these guys do
get their opportunities, you know, as a parent, you appreciate
that and you just want them to do well because,
especially for me, I know how hard he has to
work every day.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
All right. And then finally one more quarterback question. Uh,
this is math at work. If quin yours can't play
and arch Manning becomes the starting quarterback, that means true freshman,
Trey Owens is now the backup. Trey did get into
(16:34):
the ball game and played some the other day, so
naturally it would follow because folks always liked to ask
questions about the backup quarterback. In fact, it was a
backup quarterback in the late eighties early nineties Donovan Forbes,
who once said the most popular guy on campus at
the University of Texas is the backup quarterback. And Sark
was asked, does that mean when he gets to that
(16:55):
cutoff point, if it is determined that quin viewers cannot
play and Arch Banning draws the preponderance of the snaps
with the first team, does that mean that Trey Owens
then wraps up in terms of his reps getting ready
to be the backup.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
Yeah, so Trey's gonna get more reps too, right that
it all kind of evolves or rolls downhill that way.
I thought Trade did a nice job. Man, I first
time ever playing college football in front of one hundred
thousand people. That there's some some nerves and some butterflies there,
But I thought he was really poised and composed. It
was unfortunate on what I think his first play, the
(17:31):
running back goes kind of the wrong way and he's
got to run it. But I thought he made a
nice completion there on a third down. He really made
a nice throw on fourth down to Silas and then
Silas ended up losing the first down. So I thought
he just showed good poise and composure. You know, I
think the guy has definitely improved and grown, and you know,
we're in pretty good hands there with him as the
(17:52):
backup and so but again he'll get more reps with
us now up with up with kind of the the
ones and twos field and and then Cole Lord will
operate kind of the scout teamwork on the other end
of the field.
Speaker 1 (18:03):
Okay, there you go. Yeah, and if you had any
other questions, Cole Lord now becomes the third quarterback. Then
all right. We have more coming up as we continue
on sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the
iHeartRadio app.
