Speaker 1 (00:05):
It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcast Craig Way.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Here on a Thursday afternoon. Glad to have you with
us here on the program, Crag and Cam with you.
Headed into a football weekend. There is a college football
game tonight. I don't know if you noticed it, Cam,
that there is a college football game that night. It
probably would have a little bit of interest on your part.
I'm thinking, uh, South Alabama coach by major appelite at
(00:40):
Appalachian State. Oh well, sun belt, work for you, Fun
belt for you night on fun Thursday nights. That's going Then,
of course there's a NFL to night Jet's Patriots. Here's
your fun fact of the day. Give credit to ESPN
for this, because that's where I saw it was a
might have been good Morning Football over time. I'm trying
(01:02):
to remember. Anyway, I was watching both of them this morning.
Tonight's game between the Jets and Patriots will be the
first time the Jets that neither the Jets nor the Patriots,
or that one of them at least did not have
Bill Belichick on the sideline since nineteen ninety five. Think
(01:28):
about that because memories with the Jets the Patriots. This
is the first time since nineteen ninety five that Belichick
will be will not be on at least one of
the sidelines, you know, either the Jets or the mean
he wouldn't be on both, but I mean not on
neither the Jets nor the Patriots sideline for the first
(01:51):
time since nineteen ninety five. So it's been a while.
So those two teams doing battle time, all right, let's
hear from Lowborn's head coach Steve Sarkisian. This is from
the Thursday media zoom availability, the final time of the
week that he visits with the local media. Of course,
we have an on field chat with him two hours
prior to kick on Saturday, and you can hear that
(02:12):
as part of our pregame. It's the last thing we
bring you prior to kick offs are on the field
visit with sark right before kick on game day. But
here's what he had to say to the local media day.
Starting with some opening thoughts.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
Say, first of all, really really nice week of work
for our for our team and our players. You know,
I went through it and felt like, you know, candidly,
we were a little off to a little bit of
a slow start this week, just because we had some
moving parts and some guys you know that were injured
last week that didn't play, some guys that got nicked
up in the game, and so you know, some guys
(02:46):
were limited early in the week. But I thought really
Wednesday and Thursday's practices were tremendous. Love that loved the energy,
love the way the guys operated and understanding of the
plan and what we're doing. So we're looking forward to
to watching our guys go out and compete. You know,
I'll do this now. Arch is going to start at
quarterback Saturday. You know, I feel like Quinn has made
(03:07):
great strides ever since Saturday night into where he's gotten to.
But but you know, with my decision is, you know,
I'm looking forward to the you know, his future as
a player, but also the future of the season for
us and the longevity and getting him you know, possibly
one more week healthier for the long term, I think
as good for us as we're getting ready for SEC play.
(03:29):
So Arch is more than capable, as I think we
all know, he's got you know, a lot of you know,
confidence from his teammates and trust from his teammates to
go out and play, had a really good week of work,
understands the plan. And but it's different, you know, it's
different when you're the starting quarterback as opposed to coming
in cold off the bench as a backup. So different
challenge for him. But I know that he'll be he'll
(03:49):
be more than ready to uh to go out and
operate and play footballt high level for us.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
All right, So Sark made that announcement that they're still,
you know, going to try to get Quinn you weres healthy,
and so Arch Banning will get the start at quarterback.
No big surprised there not to be satisfied with just
that injury update. When the Q and A started, the
media want to know about other guys like Jayden Blue
(04:14):
and Jelani McDonald and Drey Wisner, and where did those
guys sit? The question put the Sark.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
In their own ways varying They're all, I guess limited
to some degree. You know, I think all those guys
will kind of be game time decisions, you know, at
varying degrees. I feel I feel better about maybe a
couple of them than another one. But you know, again,
we've got we've got two full days and really two
and a half days until kickoff, So see how healthy
(04:41):
we can get those guys and then and then potentially
what we can get out of them.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Okay, so there's your injury update. Now what about emphasis
for the game? Yes, the emphasis has always to win
the game. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I
can just hear herm Edwards, Hello, you play to win
the game? You got that in there, yes, of course.
Obviously other than that. In addition to that, Sark was
(05:08):
asked what he has been emphasizing for this week's contest.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
Well, I think for us as I'm always striving to
play as clean of football as we can, you know, Kirk,
and and and I also think that you know, there's
a there's a style of football that I want to
make sure that we play, you know, week in and
week out and and not and do it with a
consistent kind of approach, and and the approach matters throughout
the week, because I think that that's what allows us
(05:33):
to play that way in game. And so, you know,
I want to make sure that we're really fast Saturday night.
I want to make sure that we're really physical Saturday night.
I want to make sure that we play really smart football,
and that we own the situations as they present themselves,
whether it's third down or fourth down, or short yardage
or red area, you know, backed up situations. I really
(05:54):
want us to take care of the ball better than
we did last week. You know, we had two turnovers
and we fund the third time. And then I want
to I want to create more turnovers, you know, and
that might be a little greedy of me. The one
turnover we got resulted in a touchdown, but but I
sure would like us to get more hands on the ball,
uh you know, you know, knock the ball off the
(06:14):
runners a little bit more, and those types of things.
And then naturally, I think for us, you know, when
we're really cooking our return game and in our in
our block game is really good on special teams. And
so we've made a huge point of emphasis this week,
and Coach Banks has done a great job with our
special teams you know, over four years and most notably
(06:34):
this week. So I'd love to see that aspect of
our game really start to go to another level because
I think we're more than capable of doing that.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
All right now, rolling it back to arch Band and
getting the start on Saturday night, he was asked a
couple more questions about Arch. First of all, remember during
the summer, during the training camp workouts and the fall
camp workouts, how many questions there were, not only for Sark,
(07:03):
but for Quinn you were, but for the rest of
the offense, the defense about that l world leadership and
the leadership, about being a leader and exerting his influence
as a leader, and all that leadership stuff. Well, you
can take it to the bank that obviously. Now with
Arch as a red shirt freshman stepping into the position,
(07:24):
here come the leadership questions again. And somebody asked, how
important is it for Arch to be a leader as
the quarterback on the field Saturday night?
Speaker 3 (07:32):
Yeah, I don't think he has to focus on leading
right now. I think he needs to focus on knowing
what he's supposed to do playing at a high level.
You know, we've got a veteran offensive line in front
of him. Those guys they know what they know what's about.
He's got a great leader in tight end in Gunner Hilm.
He's got a couple veteran wide receivers you know that
have played a lot of football on the outside. And
(07:54):
then he's got a corps of guys that really he
came in with, or a freshman that he's got really
good rapport with. So I think the best way he's
going to lead is by doing what he's done all week,
which is prepare really well, you know, do his job
at a high level, and then his natural leadership will
come out when it's supposed to do. But you know,
our focus has been on him playing good football and
(08:15):
the leadership stuff will will come as it comes.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
All right, and then one more a little bit of
thought with regard to ourch Sark. And this has come
out over his three prior seasons, and we've talked about
it on Long Worn Weekly, which, by the way, you
can hear it tonight at seven o'clock. Long Worn Weekly.
We recorded the show last night at Pluckers at the
(08:39):
West Campus location. We recorded every Wednesday from six to seven,
and you're always invited out. If you want to come
on out, you can their question card you submit questions
for Sark. Enjoy great wings and get ready for a
football weekend with Long Worn Weekly with coach Sark. We
record the program Wednesday nights at six. It airs Thursday
(09:01):
nights at seven, so it'll be on tonight our special
guest Adrian Phillips, lifetime loghorn who suited up for Texas
and played from twenty ten to twenty thirteen, spent ten
years in the National Football League. You see him locally
on with Bob Aloo and get an opportunity to see him,
like when they break down the opponent or break down
(09:22):
film that sort of thing when he's on with him
on Sunday evenings on Bob's Sunday Night Shop. So Adrian Phillips, ap,
as we know, and we'll join us and you'll hear
that conversation tonight Loggorn weekly at seven o'clock. But the
point that I was going to make is, over the years,
Sark really does get into the psychological side of things
(09:47):
with regard to football teams overall and in specific the
quarterback position. After all, Sark was an outstanding quarterback in
his own right in college, and he is kind of
a quarterback whisper and a quarterback confine and all that
other sort of stuff. So he was asked how important
is the psychological part, the psyche part of the quarterback
(10:08):
position and does he still feel the need especially with
the red chart freshman getting his first collegiate start. The
need to manage some of that or how much of
a percentage is managed for a guy like RS Banning.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
We do a lot of it. I would say we
coach our quarterbacks really hard. You can ask those guys,
you know, but that's intentional. We try to put as
much stress and as much pressure on them on a
daily basis on the field so that when they do
get in the environment of playing in front of one
hundred thousand people, that they're comfortable. And because it's hard
(10:42):
to create one hundred thousand people, but they can. I
can create it with myself and coach Milly, coaching them
hard and hold them accountable to every single detail that
they're responsible for. And then in turn, as we start
getting closer to games, then we start building them up
and making sure that they feel really good about what
they're doing. But the psyche is important. But again, I
(11:03):
think what takes care of a lot of the psyche
is when you know what to do, and then when
you know what to do and then you execute it,
that should build your confidence, you know. I think psyche
becomes fragile when you make mistakes, when you force interceptions
and you when you fumble the ball. When you forget
to motion people, that's when the psyche can start to
get a little bit shaky. So we try to coach
(11:25):
them hard. We try to get them to do things
the right way, and then we try to build them
up the closer to game days as we get there.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
So there's the secret sauce, if you will, with regard
to getting quarterbacks ready to play, and Sarka has been
working that with Arch Manning. Arch taking the preponderance of
the snaps with the first team this week and he
will be the starting quarterback on Saturday night. And again
you can hear that on ninety eight point one FMKVET,
(11:52):
the home of Austin's all time country favorites as well
as one of the three point one FM Austin's eighty station.
But a pregame coverage here on the Z we'll get
at four o'clock Saturday afternoon from the hook them hangout
at Bevo Boulevard down with the Windship Circle with Cam
and also with Hardball Hearted and Mark Henry. So that
(12:15):
comes your way beginning at four o'clock. All right, coming
up next we pivot to Inconceivable for at Thursday. Get
some food oriented things and some other topics to get
to when we continue on sports Radio AM thirteen under
the Zone, in the iHeartRadio app
