Speaker 1 (00:00):
The long worn football team where tickets have been more
scares getting ready for this matchup with Ugh al Monroe.
One thing that's been impressive to see in the wake
of all the injuries that have happened to the running
back corps. It happened really early in fall camp. Maybe that
was a blessing in the skies from where I'm going
(00:22):
with this, but it happened very early in fall camp
to CJ. Baxter knee injury, out for the year, Christian
Clark freshman Achilles out for the year, and then in
the Michigan game, Jane Blue hurt his ankle. Sat out
(00:45):
last week's came against UTSA, was listed as questionable this
week and working toward getting back and getting ready. Trey
Wiser did play some last week, but he's been banged
up a lot, so he's been kind of in and out.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
His status was listed as que getable.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Then there's the true freshman Jered Gibson, one guy knock
on Formica that has not been hurt yet, the true freshman,
and you know Sark in the earlier news conference I
believe that it was on Monday, described his running style
as kind of straight ahead, just plow for that kind
of thing. And now to Shard choices, trying to get
(01:22):
a little more wiggle into his game. But he's just
been plowing over people. The young man from Gainesville, Florida,
went to IMG Academy. He's the long worne leading rusher
so far, He's carried it thirty three times for one
hundred and seventy eight yards two touchdowns. He's averaging nearly
five and a half yards per carry. So it's been
impressive to see what this true freshman has done. And
(01:43):
Sark was asked in yesterday's media availability, his final visit
with the media during the week, about the growth and
development of Jerreck Gibson, only a freshman in that running
back spot.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Yeah, Jeric's a really tough kid, hard knows, you know,
he loves football. He likes to be coached hard. You know,
Coach Choice coaches him hard. I've never seen the guy
shy away from contact, shy away from anything, shy away
from another carry.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
He's just kind of.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Got that blue collar mentality in him. And so even
when he you know, as as Cedric got hurt, then
Christian got hurt, and then you know Jaden got hurt,
it's kind of he kept moving himself up the depth chart,
and the carries started to come, and the responsibility started
to rise, pass protection, things of that nature. It never
really feels too big for Jeric, you know, because I
(02:34):
think he loves the game. He works extremely hard. He's
hard on himself. I would say sometimes maybe a little
too hard on himself, but that's just because he wants
to play really well and wants to do right. So,
like I said, you know, we've kind of nicknamed him
Baby the baby Rhino because he will find contact. We're
hoping maybe he can make a couple of guys miss
here Saturday night.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Yeah, that's part of that whole deal about him just
kind of going right at Pete and you know, it's
like finding the red dot as Sarks and just going
right at it, that sort of thing. But he has
not shied away from contact, and they're trying to even
diversify his game a little more and get some more wiggling.
But he has emerged as the tough, hard nose in
(03:20):
between the tackles running guy. And this is a true freshman.
So that's impressive to see and I think we'll probably
also see some more from Velton Gardner as well. The
SMU transfer because he gets a little more and a
little more and a little more every week, just gets
you know, gets a little more comfortable with things. Remember
he graduated SMU and entered the Texas program as a
(03:46):
grad transfer literally two weeks before the start of the season. So,
you know, coaches like to talk about that phrase drinking
from a fire hose.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
He was one.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
First time I ever heard that phrase drinking from a fire.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Hose was.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
Twenty thirteen. Actually it turned out to be mac Brown's
last season. We all remember what happened when he went out.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
To BYU, and BYU.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
I think ran for over five hundred yards. Taysom Hill
just trampled the long worn defenders and Manny Diaz was fired.
When they got back, Mack relieved him of his duties
and that was it. And they brought back Greg Robinson,
who had been the defensive coordinator of the two thousand
and four Rose Bowl team that beat Michigan. Robinson, of
(04:34):
course had been with the Kansas City Chiefs. He'd been
a head coach at Syracuse by then, and they brought
him back.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
And Greg, in addition.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
To giving me great steakhouse recommendations in Kansas City, Missouri
from his time being with the Chiefs when Texas went
to play Kansas or Kansas State were in there. In
addition to giving me great recommendations, also did a heck
of a job turning around that long horn defense there
in twenty thirteen. And I remember talking to him, going
to visit with him afterwards, and Roger Wallace and I
(05:04):
walked in there and he said, Fellas, I'm drinking from
a fire hose right now, but I'll do the best
I can all that kind of suff and that I
was like, Okay, I get the imagery. I think that's
the first time I ever heard that.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Now I've heard.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
It a gazillion times since, and we know what it
means obviously, the drinking from a fire hose thing, trying
to you know, absorb a lot of things. And I
think Velton Gardner has been in that position there, but
the more the season goes forward and more reps he's
getting now, especially with the guys who have been banged
up in practice, I think it helps him a little bit.
(05:36):
But Jared Gibson right now has emerges the guy while
Jaden Blew and Trey Wisner are nursing through some injuries.
So hopefully those guys will be back and healthy and
full board. But I think we're going to see more
of Jared Gibson tomorrow night. I think it's it's it's
for sure. We'll see that and some more of Velton
Gardner and Ryan Niblett, you know, a cross training receiver
running back as well. He's seen action at both positions,
(05:57):
and I think we'll see that as well tomorrow. All right,
we'll come back and wrap up our number two here
on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone and the
iHeartRadio app
