Speaker 1 (00:00):
A Wednesday afternoon. Glad to have you with us.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
As I always say, on Wednesday, you know, quite often,
quite often it represents the hump day. So if it's
helping you get over the hump today, that's great. Glad
that's the case. If Wednesday, which is the traditional Wednesday
for many folks, if it's your Monday or your Friday, I.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
Hope you navigated all pretty well.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
So glad to have you with us here on a
Wednesday afternoon. Here on the program, there was a question
I did not get to yesterday and apologize, meant to
do this. This is on the text line because we
do endeavor to try to answer all the questions that
we can. And the question was how many colleges have
a tower or building they illuminate after a win. I

(00:51):
would just say this, more than you probably realize, maybe
even more than you can count. There are many who
do that. They'll lie eight things on campus. I remember
the one brief time I spent as a student all
of one semester at Texas Tech University, when they would

(01:11):
win a home football game, there would be a light
that was lit up red there in the tower on campus.
And then, of course, students depending on how the big,
how big the win was, might go and then roll
in a toilet paper the Will Rogers statue and that
just like remember you had the tree at Tumor's Corner
before Harvey up and I killed it before he poisoned

(01:34):
it there in Auburn, he had that, but there were
buildings that were lit. Texas State has a star on
I think it's called Jackson Square because somebody somebody pointed
out to me once when it's not it's not the
guys who are doing Texas State radio now, but it's

(01:56):
somebody in the past once And it was like the
very year after I had said light the tower orange
about Texas, there was a big Texas State victory and
the broadcaster was heard to have said something light the
star on Jackson Square.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
Somebody said, you get a problem.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Do you have a problem, Like, no, it's okay.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Go light it.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
You know it works out absolutely, you know I completely understand,
you know, get excited about it. So yeah, So there's
the bell tower in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is illuminates
very pretty the Carolina.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
They didn't light it last they did not after the
James mess they did.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Can you imagine how big that would be if they
beat Duke this week after losing at home to James Madison,
and they played Duke up in Durham, they crossed the
county line the eight miles that separates the two campuses
during in Durham Chapel Hill. If they find a way

(02:57):
to win that game with Malik Murphy plain quarterback now
for Duke and the Blue Devil's unbeaten, and if they
find a way to go in there when it and
they went the victory bell, they played for a bell,
a victory bells car. So yeah, that that tower would
be lit if that were the case. So we're always
glad to have your input, your questions, your thoughts, your

(03:20):
comments on on things, and uh, you know, as.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
Long as they're.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Respectfully worded, then uh then we're more than happy to
h to partake of that all right before we get
to the break, and then we're gonna hear from long
Orange Head coach Steve Sarkisian from the SEC teleconference, uh
again to update what's gone on with the Major League

(03:48):
Baseball pennant races. The teams that have clinched division titles are.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
In the America League.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
The let's see the Guardians and the Astros, who did
it last night. The Yankees have not yet clinched the East.
They're up five with five to play on Baltimore and
they're playing the Orioles. It was kind of like what
the Astros are dealing with with the Mariners, but they
beat the Mariners last night, so they wrapped up the
American League West. They're up five with four to play.

(04:22):
The Asters have four left to play. The Yankees and
Orioles each have five games, so they have two left
against each other. They're both have clinched playoff spots. The
Oriols have clinched a playoff spot, and there are two
playoff spots still available. So when you look at the

(04:43):
race for the wildcard, Baltimore is almost certainly going to
be the top wild card, and then it's either going
to be Kansas City Detroit, each of whom are tied
for the two wildcard spot, which would be positions to
But then you have Minnesota two games back, Seattle still

(05:03):
mathematically alive at two and a half, and even the
Red Sox, who were down to the Blue Jays three nothing,
came back and won. They're still mathematically alive at three
and a half, but not likely to jump all those
teams into the final wildcard spot. We have seen crazier
things happen, but not likely happen. In the Nationally, the
Phillies have wrapped up the division and the National League East.

(05:30):
They are one half game behind the Dodgers for the
best record overall in baseball, But again, the Dodgers are
only two games up on San Diego in the West.
After the Patters turned the triple play to win the
ball game in the nineth ending last night, so LA
hasn't even clinched the division yet, but they still do
have the best record right now. San Diego, by virtue

(05:51):
of that win, clinched at the very least a playoff
spot and could wind up winning the division if they
win the next two games against LA, and then they
went out or finished time with the Dodge, they have
the top spot in the wildcard.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
Then you have the Mets and Diamondbacks. The Mets have
a half game edge on the Diamondbacks. Mets lost.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
The best possible scenario happened last night for the Atlanta Braves.
Mets got beat by the Braves Diamondbacks for the second
straight night, lost to the Giants, Diamondbacks play the Podres
this weekend.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
Could be cataclysmic there for wonder both teams.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
So the Mets have a half game edge on Arizona,
but then Atlanta is just a half game back of Arizona.
So it's three teams fighting for two spots because San Diego,
either San Diego or the.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
Dodgers will have a wildcard spot. One on one in
the West. One we'll get a wildcard, and then the.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
Mets, Diamondbacks, and Braids are all still fighting about it,
and the Mets are playing the Braids right now. The
Diamondbacks are wrapping up in San Francisco, and then Arizona
goes home, and then they've got San Diego this weekend.
So it's headed down the home stretch. It's getting really
really interesting now, Cam did you happen to see the
end of the rangers A's game last night?

Speaker 3 (07:03):
Of course, not, Craig. The season's over with for the Rangers.
There's just no point in even watching them, following them
for the most part.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
Okay, you got enough native text, and then you know
that you have just disassociated yourself with baseball, and you know,
swimming only in the river that is football right.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
Now, if if, maybe, if the Astros did not win
the Aos, maybe I'd be more inclined to watch. But
I just god, I mean, I know they're gonna make
it's the Alcs again, and it's gonna be what eight
straight years, they've won four.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Straight division titles. Well, see, remember they have to play
an extra round of the playoffs. They're gonna be the
three seed and so they play the lowest seeded wild
card team. That could be the Royals, could be the
Mariners again, could be the Twins. So there's there's still
a lot of stuff to be you know, sorted out there.

(07:58):
With that, The reason why I bring up is the
A's are playing their final ever series in Oakland and
it's against the Rangers. And they had a rally in
the ninth inning and they beat the Rangers last night.
They had a walk off. They beat the Rangers last night.
They have two games remaining in the Oco Coliseum, so

(08:19):
play the night and then tomorrow afternoon while we're on
the air, they'll be playing. So it'll be the last
ever game. And and you and I were talking a
little bit about this that you know, the owner John
Fisher kind of tried to do an op ed apology
to as fans, and then he kind of flipped and said, Hey,
we're doing a giveaway and it's like a replica of

(08:42):
the ballpark.

Speaker 1 (08:43):
Nobody wants that.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
Well, what they don't want is the way the A's
are doing. If you heard how the A's are structuring
this giveaway, it won't be available until after the seventh inning,
and it's a veil while they last on your way
out of the ballpark. So A's fans have taken that

(09:06):
to meaning he doesn't want to sticking around to the
end of the game. So that's pretty low rent. So
the hell with his giveaway. We're staying all the way
to the end of the game. If they've got any
left on their way out five.

Speaker 1 (09:19):
We'll grab one. Otherwise, don't care. And so it looks
kind of cheap looking at it. Yeah from John Fisher.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
Yeah, So they're off to West Sacramento for the next
year or two or maybe even three before finally getting
things worked down the mood to Vegas. But anyway, the
Rangers and A's played two more games. They're in Oakland
and the Athletes and then one other baseball topic is
the Chicago White Sox, and we'll visit with Gene Watson
again on Friday.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
They did.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
Manage to avoid having the fewest losses ever in a
full season by winning last night over the Angels. They
are now thirty seven and one twenty one twenty is
the record for most losses in the season, set by
the expansion Mets in nineteen sixty two. They went forty
to one twenty with two reinouts, forty wins one hundred

(10:11):
twenty losses two reinouts. The fewest wins in a full
season had been posted by the Cleveland Spiders of eighteen
ninety nine, who then later became the Indians and then
now known as the Guardians. The Spiders that year went
thirty six and one seventeen. That was in the days
of the one hundred and fifty four game schedule. They
had one rainouts, so they played one hundred fifty three games.

(10:33):
They only won thirty six. They went thirty six and
one seventeen. The White Sox won their thirty seventh game last.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
Night, beating the Angels, so.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
They won't have the fewest losses, but unless they win
out they'll they'll have the most losses in Major League
Baseball history. They're sitting on one twenty right now. One
more loss and they have the most losses in baseball history.
So in this year of Otani fifty to fifty, you know,
and some of these other things and Aaron Judge with

(11:05):
big numbers, the White Sox are well on their way
to setting the record for futility. All right, Up next,
we'll hear from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisio when we
continue on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
