Speaker 1 (00:00):
Roger Wallace joins us. Now does it even rank in
your top ten? I mean, does your deep dive of
Buffett even include some of his more popular hits? Uh?
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Oh, do we not have Roger?
Speaker 1 (00:15):
I had that big introm not hearing? Okay, Well, we'll
try to to get Roger reconnected here.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
We had connected move Ago, might have lost connection there
with him.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
But what we are going to hear, as I mentioned,
weleater on, we'll hear more from Loghorn's head coach, Deve
Sarkisian and and we do have long worn weekly tonight
with him recorded from last night, so.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
We'll hear him.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Also talk about his injury situation, which we'll get to
in a moment.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Now, right, is Roger with us right now? Well? Are
you there with us? Roger? Okay? Old school? All right?
Speaker 1 (01:06):
So my question was when we bumped in with changes
in latitude changes that asset. I realize I'm being a
rank amateur just going the hit parade route with him,
but that is my all time favorite Buffet's song. My
question to you was, does it even does it even
register any of his more popular tunes on your in
(01:27):
your top ten? Or are you such a fan that
it goes much deeper in the in the dive, much deeper.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
No, I don't.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
I don't want to be that guy, but it's kind
of a mood thing and you know it changes.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
I love the line, and.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
You can appreciate being a traveler of you know, reading
departure signs in some big airports reminds me of the
place as I've been. I mean, yeah, that's kind of cool.
It goes along what we talked about last week, if
you know, just kind of that escapism.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
But it's up there.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
But it's you know, it's funny. He used to say
that he had, you know, so many must plays at concert,
and certainly that one Marguerite Deville, Come Monday, Volcano, Cheezburg,
and then the list became so long that the whole
concert was must play. And he's what he was one
of those artists that I'm.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
Playing for you.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
I'm not going to be that guy that you know,
this is what I want to play because you know
this song. You know, he goes, I'm I play what
you want. And he was very transparent about realizing his
place on tour was to give them what they wanted
to hear, not necessarily you know, some of the stuff
that that wasn't as well known, or you know, he
(02:35):
had an album during COVID songs you don't know by heart,
because he had that box set songs you know by heart.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
But anyway, yeah, and you know what, I think that's
a thing with advancing age.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
I really do. And here in h it's easy for
saying now because we've lost him.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Well, the right guys are talking about that, aren't they.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely absolutely because and I do get
asked a lot of times people say, oh, their favorite
game to call, or uh, what about the mascot out?
Speaker 2 (03:01):
And you know that kind of thing.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
And and maybe ten years ago I might have rolled
my eyes about it.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
And I was like, no, no, it's okay.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
Uh and and uh, you know he's he's at the
top of your list, Billy Joel is adder near the
top of mind.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
And he said a very similar thing.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
He said, when we go in concert, we kind of
give fans a choice on some things we could play.
You know, we could play She's Always a Woman, or
we could play uh this and this and and and
he would ask them which would you rather hear? They
do it by a cheer thing and then and then
he said later on, you know they he thought, how
many times did they want to hear you know, uh
(03:40):
scenes from an Italian restaurant? And the answer is every
single time. And he's like, so we accepted that. We're like, okay,
do you want us play the hits? All?
Speaker 2 (03:48):
They want us to play the hits?
Speaker 3 (03:49):
All right, we'll play the hits, you know, the exactly
and it might be the only time you see him,
so you know, you you want to be at that
one concert he decided to go, you know, B side
of the forty five.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
So here's the here's the here's the sports connection to that.
Somebody asked Joe DiMaggio decades ago why he went so
hard all the time, even when the game is well
in hand, and his answer was because there might be
somebody in the stands who has never seen me play before. Yeah,
so it kind of makes sense with regard to that. Okay,
(04:20):
that said you were on the media zoom as I
was this morning listening to Sark talk about this sec opener,
and I did like what he said about business as usual,
But then you know he he at the Monday press conference,
he talked about all the intricate tie breakers that go
(04:41):
into effect if you're not sitting in the top two
in sole possession of first or second place. So it's
it's kind of a mixed bag, isn't it on how
they're approaching this thing this week?
Speaker 3 (04:51):
Yeah, that's right, that's right, And I think, you know,
kind of his point Monday was, we don't want to
mess around and lose a ball game that puts us
in in the tie breaker. Now, obviously everybody wants to
win every game, but I think his point was there
aren't two divisions, it's not clearcut, so you know, everything matters.
And he knows that they're huge favorites on Saturday against
(05:11):
Mississippi State, but probably you know, the perfect opener, especially
with the situation at quarterback that you know they're home
there against another team that's got some quarterback issues, way
worse than Texas. So yeah, I think I think his
point on Monday was, Hey, we don't want to have
to do the math that only people like Craig Way
can figure out.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Or that even care to figure out.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
Right.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Yeah, with regard to you.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
Yeah, but talking to you in November about high school football,
and my head starts spending when you when you readtal.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
Off, Yeah, all of that kind of stuff. Roger rolis
with us here on the injury. The first ever SEC
injury report for for the long WRNS has four guys
listened as questionable Trey Wisner, Julia McDonald, quin yours and
DeAndre more Eyes is doubtful, Colin Page, who got banged
(06:03):
up with some tough running yards late in that win,
and and Derek Williams and.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Then three out c J. Bax from Christian Clark.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
We knew Velton Gardner out as well, So I mean
it makes a somewhat thinned out running back room even
thinner for this week.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
Well, how about that three of the three outs are
all running backs.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
A doubtful is.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
Is a running back, and uh you know, then you
got you know, Jayden Blue back from missing a ballgame.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Uh so, and a questionable running back in Trey Wister.
A questionable running.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Back, Yeah exactly. That was Jack Gibson's the only one.
We saw him kind of limp out for a play
last week and then he seemed fine. But yeah, it
just seems like, you know, the kind of snake bitting
at that position yet still getting a lot of production.
And Jade Blue had a career game Saturday.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
Quinn continues to be questionable and and uh Sarks said that,
you know, he wanted to see how he would do
uh on the practice, feel any many even going through
the walk through stuff, and you know, and I know
because we've both been there, that they really do light
things on Friday, and Sarka said he would decide tomorrow
(07:12):
if he would play on that.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
So I think this is.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
More about seeing how the body responded to today's practice
and yesterday's right as to when he makes his decision
tomorrow about Quinn.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
Yeah, and it didn't sound you know, Monday he talked about, well,
what do you have to see? Well, he has to
be able to operate the game plan. So it doesn't
sound like it's totally Quinn.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
You good?
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Can you handle the pain? It seems like there's a
little bit more than that. So I still think they'll
air on the side of caution, knowing they're going into
an open week and if there's any chance that this
thing could get worse because of playing, if it's not,
if it's just a matter of okay, he's good to go,
then play him. But you know, I expect I think
(07:54):
they have another one tonight. Another but they have an
injury update every day every day, and then ninety minutes
before kick off the final one. I think he'll I
think they'll stay at that questionable spot.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Yeah, I think so too. I think you're probably right
about that.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
That's that's going to be that the I wanted to
ask about something else too, And I don't know how
much attention as busy as you are like me, I
don't know how much attention you pay to this, but
sometimes my own squirreliness of looking at the minutia will
(08:27):
dive into this deal. I did not think that I
would have as much interest in viewing power rankings for
group of five schools as I am, and maybe the.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
James Madison whenever North Carolina had something to do with it.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
I think initially it was looking at possibly that that
Texas State could could get there. And in their power rankings,
this was CBS's They have un LB number one, and
we know what's happened there with the quarterback leaving, and
then you've got Liberty, James Madison, Boise State, Army and
Tech stayed is sixth those in those group of five
(09:04):
power rankings. I guess my point is, and I asked
Sark a little bit about this last night along one
weekly is we're paying more attention to the Group of
five simply because since they're no more Power five, since
it's Power four, we know what G five's going to
get into the playoff in this expanded playoff, and it
does make for some more interesting discussion one hundred percent.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
I mean, think about the Texas State game last Thursday
against Arizona State and or two thursdays ago, and all
that was talked about there. So it's funny because oh,
Alabama Georgia doesn't mean anything Saturday because they're going to
see each other again maybe in Atlanta, you know, maybe
in the playoffs, or they're both going to get in
the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Okay, so maybe.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
That's been watered down a bit. But then you've got
other things that suddenly become talking points. So I don't
think the twelve team playoff. I think you're getting just
news storylines as opposed to well, you know, these teams
can lose a couple of games and get in, and
so what's the big deal about these matchups that a
few years ago would be so monumental. Well, it's just different.
(10:06):
It's not necessarily uh, you know, a worse situation. And
there's a lot to be said for you know, getting
that first round by or you know, you know, being
a top seed outside of the first round by so
that you host. And I've always contended there's probably some ads,
Craig that are sitting back going, hey, we'll take a
five seed, we'll take the home field, we'll take a
(10:27):
home game, and we get the four team in the playoffs,
you know, so shoot, imagine the gate on that, you know,
the payoffs have a home playoff game.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
Well, our former colleague Brian Jones was home with me
yesterday and he kind of hinted at that. He says,
can you imagine how cool it be to have a
playoff game at dk R? And I'm thinking, yeah, but
it'd be even, to quote Matthew McConaughey, be a lot
cooler if they didn't. It'd be a lot cooler if
they were playing, if they got a buy and are
and are playing, you know, in either the Peach Bowl
(10:59):
or the Sugar Bowl or something like that.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
Okay, So along those lines of.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
MINUSI, this is going to get us into the high
school realm and into your game tonight that I would
just say this to people with regard to Yeah, it's
my own affliction of dealing with the MINUSI and the
deep dive. But it does have an endgame on this.
And here's what I'm talking about. Of the games in
the area, probably one of the games that isn't drawing
(11:27):
much attention at all, if any, would be the game
at house Park between Austin High and Del Valley. And
you're going, Okay, come on, I mean, you got Westlake,
he got Lake Travis, you got Bowie, he got Dripp
What do you mean what are you talking about? Well,
if Austin High gets a win Del Valley, which is
the third largest enrollment in the district, it take a hit.
But if they win, and you see where I'm going
(11:49):
with this, if they you know, find a way to
beat Booie like they did a few years ago or whatever,
and knock them out all of a sudden. Now you're
talking about you know, Westlake bumping up or bumping from
Division one or Division two. So this is the first
week where we're starting to see those little things in play, Roger.
And it also goes into play into the district where
where you're telecast is centered Tonight and twenty five six
(12:12):
a with the game you've got between west Wood and
Maynor this evening.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
Well, yeah, and and for you know, Mayne's coming off
that wild win last week and that that's a team
with a lot of talent that may be starting to
figure it out. Westwood, you know, they've had two close losses,
but they're sitting there looking for for a win. But
you're right, especially Westwood if they win tonight. You know
Anthony Wood, you know, he said, hey, I think I
think this district is jumbled up, maybe outside of Vandergriff
(12:40):
and round Rock and so you know spots three and four. Obviously,
if they lose, then they're you know, in some trouble
at O and two. But uh yeah, I think I
think the winner of this one has to feel like,
yeah we can we can still contend for for one
of those playoff spots. And and then to your point,
then all of a sudden you start looking at the
other stuff. Obviously, you know round Rock set they go
(13:01):
to the playoffs, they're going to be Division one, so
you know.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
That's always a given.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
But other than that, then you start trying to figure
things out. But I was impressed with Stony when we
had them a couple of weeks ago, I thought they
played really well. They got to you know, Visa Ridge
has got a tough one at Vandergriff tomorrow and Stony
Point and McNeil. That's that's obviously a keyp ball game.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
And by the way, just to let you know how
tightly bunched this district can be, other than perhaps those
two you mentioned round Rock and Vandergriff. And we know,
assuming they're in round Rock's definitely Division one, Vandergriff's definitely
Division two. We know that for a fact. However, however,
and this is kind of interesting. The computer that I
often refer to Jerry Forest Pigskin Prep, and they feed
(13:44):
everything into this computer in it and it spits out
what are prediction lines. They're not gambling lines, although our
old friend Jeff Howell said there's a couple of guys
sitting up with de Boons in Florence in a back
room looking at these kinds of But the computer looks
at an one four Westwood and a one in two
(14:08):
Manor and says, we like wes Wood, buy three points tonight.
But my point is that it shows how close everything is.
Speaker 3 (14:18):
Yeah, and I'm looking forward to this game Westwood. You know,
as I mentioned, they've had some close ballgames. They lost
an overtime game. They run two quarterbacks, and Anthony Wood
told us something very interesting. He said, we do it
on make it take it at the old you know
the basketball. You know, you make you score, you keep playing.
Usually that's you know, half court, and he goes, we
(14:39):
get a hot hand, we keep going, a couple of
mistakes and we'll change quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
So we know stuny point.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
For a long time under Craig Chesher would run a
two quarterback offense and sometimes in the same series he'd
run him in and out. But but Anthony said, well,
we'll make it take it. Another funny thing he told
me about was what they've got coming down the pike, Craig.
And that's a young name man named Alex Smith, whose
dad was a pretty good quarterback at Missouri, who lives
in Central Texas. That's Brad Smith's son. So looking towards
(15:10):
the future, uh, Anthony's pretty excited about, you know, the
future under under Alex Smith. And then there's another human
Meellen uh in the pipeline at UH at mayn Or Princeton,
human Miellen who's still a JV player right now. But
you know he's got the physical makeup of his brothers.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
Wow, that now that is something else to add to there.
And then finally before we get done, I know, I
know you would, you would definitely uh uh clock in
on this as well, and that is you have to
I would say, uh tip your hat to and give
(15:49):
some congratulations to east Side managing to break that losing
streak and and break through and get a win last
night of the private school in San Antonio, and it
was it was great to see Eastside be able to
do that, have that long losing streak to get their
first win since two thousand and seventeen. Now that includes
(16:09):
some years when they didn't field a varsity program when
they went through the school change from Johnston to the east
Side the east Side Memorial and then they dropped varsity
football for a while and then brought it back in. Nevertheless,
Luis PISERA, they've got to be very very happy they
have a positive week coming off a win.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
Yeah, you love it, and you love it to me
because you love the fact that those kids go out
there every week, every day without anything in the win
column to show for yet they keep doing it when
they could you know, just say, you know what, it's
not worth it.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
This is a lot of.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
Work, it's hard work, and they stick it out, and
you know, it kind of brings me to our game
last week. You know, the Crockett bashtrop team obviously got
out of hand, and you know, Cracket's coming off a
couple of playoff seasons, but now their roster is so
small and they're having a tough time and competing, and
you know, you talk to these coaches and their job
turns a little different than a you know, Hank Carter
(17:07):
or a Tony Salazar Drew Sanders. You know they're they're
in it for a much different reason when they know
winning is going to be so difficult. And then the
extreme example of East Side. So you love it for
the kids because they keep doing it, and you love
it for the head coach because obviously he's doing it
for all the right reasons. Going out there every week.
It's not like going out and playing a basketball game
(17:27):
where you know it's an hour and twenty minute game.
Rarely are you getting beat up, and then you you know,
you get to do it again in three.
Speaker 2 (17:33):
Or four nights.
Speaker 3 (17:34):
So yeah, my hat's off.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
To those guys.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
They wanted to give you a chance to remind folks
of the stuff on KBVO and the Longhorn related as
well as high school football related programming.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
Yeah, well starts tonight. We've got the as you mentioned,
Maynard Westwood out at Kelly Reeves at seven o'clock Tomorrow
night at nine o'clock your show on KBVO with Coach Sark,
Longhorn Weekly, and then two o'clock on Saturday will be
Texas Game Day leading up to Mississippi State. Cool moment
last week, Craig, they surprised Alex okafor his wife came
(18:08):
on and they surprised him with a cake for his
induction into the Hall of Honor, and you could tell
he was excited and surprised and emotional about that. So
that was really cool to have that moment on Texas
game Day and be after it again. And we'll have
Coach Sark Monday, even though there's no game next week,
as you guys will with his first of two off
(18:30):
week news conferences. So that's our line up here for
the next several days.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
All right, and you catch it all, and then of
course Roger joining for the game call on Saturday up
in the booth.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
Appreciate the time, Roger, have a good.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
Call tonight, Thanks Craig. Take care, guys.
Speaker 1 (18:42):
All right, that's Roger Wallace kbv O, k x A N.
He's the sports director on kbv O. Tonight they have
west Wood against Manor and of course he's the KXA
and sports director and then joins me on the long
Corn football broadcast. Up next, we have Inconceivable here on
a Thursday afternoon on sports Radio AAM third teen under
the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
