Speaker 1 (00:00):
We can canvass that of our next guest. Senior Associate
athletic Director at the University of Texas, Drew Martin joins us. Now,
do you have a favorite Elvis song? Do you spend
some time in Mississippi? Do you have a do you
have a favorite Elvis song?
Speaker 2 (00:16):
I mean, I thought it was because I was coming
on being a native Memphian, where Elvis, you know, lived
a majority of his life, and so you know, I
just I just thought that was a nice tribute to
me being a Memphian. And my answer to that question
is all of them. I mean, blue suede shoes is
always up there. I'll tell you something fun. We used
(00:36):
to put blue lights on our house at Christmas for
Elvis's Blue Christmas, which is another one of my favorite.
Oh yeah, big, big Elvis in Oh that's great.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
That's great.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Well, I wanted to have you on for a few
minutes here to talk about an extremely busy time. It's
a busy time for you, it's a busy time for
UT athletics overall, and because I know folks get their
focus on football with good reason. And it's a huge
game and first ever SEC contest for the football program,
(01:07):
But there's a lot more going on, and it starts
tonight over in College Station with Volleyball Texas A and M.
And you and I were both over there at the
big announcement of the Lone Star Showdown series, the resumption
of it, or what would they call it?
Speaker 3 (01:26):
I guess the.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Restoration I think was the term they use for that.
So I mean, it's just kicking off part of it.
We could start with volleyball tonight, and there's a lot
going on this weekend, isn't there?
Speaker 2 (01:37):
It is? How exciting is that? I mean, we're so
appreciatve and restoration is the right word. We're so appreciab
that Cotton Holdings for coming on board with both Texas
and Texas A and M to sponsor the Cotton Holdings
Long Star Showdown. And it's so exciting to put these
two teams back together in conference play and know that
we're going to have these annual matchups across the board.
(01:58):
And like you said, kicking off tonight, I guess serving tonight,
I should say in College Station with volleyball, and then
we turn right around on Saturday and we get to
host our first Cotton Holdings Lone Star showdown with soccer.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Oh yeah, okay, yeah, so that's said, that'll be that'll
be going on as Okay, so now, first of all,
to let folks know about soccer that's going on. Now
explain this. It's the first two hundred and fifty fans
are going to receive soccer scarves and move Azala's. Is
that all one? And they get both or they get
(02:31):
a choice. How does that work?
Speaker 2 (02:33):
They get both? We're throwing a party out there. You
get a scarf, you get a vezuela. I feel like Oprah,
you get a car, and you get a car. So
it's gonna be a lot of It's gonna be a
lot of fun on Sunday for sure when we host
A and M. But yeah, come out, come out early,
grab a vevezuela, grab a scarf, get down close to
the field and help us, help us win one of
(02:53):
those points in the lone star showdown.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
And and this may be the best part of all
the mission. Prices, how do we say it? Free ninety nine?
Is that out of the way?
Speaker 2 (03:03):
It is? It is Crystal County's favorite price point. Frwe
free ninety nine?
Speaker 1 (03:08):
Okay, all right, and now again that'll be Sundy at
six o'clock at the Mi K Meers Track at Soccer Stadium. Okay,
now let's get into this. Given we can roll this out,
everything that's going to be happening tomorrow. And this is
why I wanted to have you on the day so
we could talk about this, to give folks enough notice
about everything that's going on. Now, our pregame show, our
(03:33):
long Orange Game Day show will be going on at
the Hook Them Hangout there Beivo Boulevard there at the
wind Chip Circle, and that's just part of everything that's
going on with Smokey's Midway. But explain this new Big
Bertha's Bizarre at Moody Center and how that works for sure.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Now, I am so excited about this new activation. And
we talk a lot and Charles Branch on our staff here,
who's is my ring master for all of these different
activations we do outside. You know, we've talked about really
celebrating Texas, celebrating our traditions. It started with Bevo Boulevard.
It started with paying tribute to live music capital the
world here in Austin with Lawrence City Limits, and it
(04:12):
expanded to Smokey's Midway with Smoking the Cannon out there hoo,
come hang out where you guys are with that, with
that awesome pregame radio show, with our food truck park
and beer hall, with Big Bertha out there. But one
of our traditions that we've been searching for a way
to celebrate her is the world's largest based from Big Bertha.
And with Big Bertha two, she'll be out there on
(04:34):
the Moody Center Plaza, which is the southeast corner of
the stadium outside of Gate thirty two. That gorgeous Dell
Technologies plaza out there. We have turned that into an
amazing shopping experience and I think South Congress shopping meets
the domain. And we're going to have fifteen activations out
there tomorrow. Everything opens five hours prior to the game,
(04:57):
so come on out there. We've got brands that have
rop product out there, like Aviator Nation launched their first
ever collegiate line with the University of Texas and they
launched it at Big Bertha's Bazaar at that UTSA game tomorrow.
We're going to have amazing licensees like Cricket for example,
Cricket is incredibly popular. You know, a men's polo line,
(05:18):
Mizzen and Maine is going to be out there. Our
staples like Champion is going to be out there. For
the ladies, we have Chickadee and L two, which are
incredible high end along with Albion Fit great opportunity to
come out and shop some unique products and product you
don't really see anywhere else. And it's it's going to
be awesome out there, and it's all anchored by our
(05:40):
you know, team shop, our Texas Team Shop with fanatics
where fans can buy that beautiful Mississippi State first ever
SEC matchup graphic. And the best part about it all, Craig,
is not just the shopping. We've got the we've got
games on the giant big screen that's out there, but
we also have it's a it's an awesome little cocktail
lounges where where they're serving frozen drinks out there to
(06:00):
enjoy on a warm Saturday afternoon while you browse all
the products and get your picture with Big Bertha.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
Now I know you didn't know this, so I have
to tell you Big Birth is near and dear to
my heart. When I was a little kid, and my
first vision of seeing Texas when I was little was
the shootout game against Arkansas and seeing Big Bertha, and
I was excited about it back then, and I made
the comment on the air. This goes back to two
thousand and seven, Drew. I made the comment on the air.
(06:27):
I said, of one of my all time wishes or
bucket list things was to get a chance to bang
the bass drump to hit Big Bertha.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
Well, we just lost the late great Robert.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
Carnahan, who had been, of course the head of the
Long Worn Band, the show band in Southwest, and he
sent me an invitation said, come on down, come on
down and do this.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
So I ran down.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
At halftime I think it was against Rice in seven
and they gave me that thing and I hit it.
I was excited, and I thought, man, that's great.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
That's a bucket.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
They're like, go ahead, hit it again. So I'm sing
again three and four times. Okay, that's enough.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
So it was. It was enough, Yeah, it was. It
was awesome.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
So I anytime there's any reference to Big Birth, I'm
pretty excited about that.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
Okay. The other thing.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
Totally understand Yeah, okay, So the other thing, I got
to ask you about Long Worn City limits, because you
guys started really amped all of this up and began
it the inception back in twenty eighteen, and you've got
another big, stacked artist lineup going on this weekend.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
It is It is going to be awesome. It starts
with the Bros Fresh as Our as our warm up act,
and then Fits in the Tantrums is going to take
the stage. And what a fun band to have as
our first ever Southeastern Conference football game on campus at
dk R Texas Memorial Stadium. But they're going to put
on a heck of a show and they should hit
(07:55):
the stage about one o'clock Saturday afternoon, and it's just
it's such a fun vibe out there. And then we're
going to conclude the night with y'all Out Boy, which
is a great cover band and a great opportunity hopefully
knock on wood. Coach Sark and the boys have put
up another w in the win column there for us
and we can celebrate postgame with a great cover band
(08:15):
concert with y'all out Boy. But I'm super excited for
Fits in the Tantrums and the other thing I'm excited
about it and people have asked about this, that giant
tower that's out there with the UT Club, It is
such a great vantage point. I don't think a lot
of people know this, but that first level of it
is reserved for University of Texas Club Dining club members
(08:36):
and it's a wonderful air condition space with F and
B if you're a UT Club member. But floors two
and three those are open to public. So if you
want a great vantage point to see the brose fresh,
to see fits in the tantrums, to see y'all out
boy postgame, those are amazing views up there under the
cover of shade. They've got bars in their setup, so
(08:57):
I highly encourage people to get out there early. That
they are capacity control for sure, but I would say
get out there early and stake out a spot that
in that UT Club tower at Longhorn City Limits presented
by Still Often Whiskey, and we still do have the
Still Often Whiskey Music Lounge. We've got the Tito's tailgate
out there as well, and we've got plenty of long space.
(09:17):
It's it's going to be awesome.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
Well yeah, and and you know, it kind of reminds me,
is it a similar type of thing, except it sounds
like it's got more space than what you created with
the Yetti yard at UFCU Diushwalk Field.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
It is, it is, and I love the Yetti yard
at Dishall Field. What a what a great atmosphere enhancer.
That is where our fans can come in free of
charge and be right up on that chain link fence
and you know, maybe get in the ear of the
opposing left and center fielders for for a little bit
there and cheer on our guys when we're in the outfield.
But it is, it is similar to that. It's larger
(09:53):
than that, and it's covered with shade.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
Ah, that's nice. That's nice, okay.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
And then and then just to let folks know, because
you know, we have people occasionally text the program or
ask us and say, man, I'd love to go to
the game, but I don't have tickets. I know they're
sold that and we give away some tickets on the
air from time to time. But just you know, if
they are interested, right, there is still the fan of
fan marketplace. They could go to seat geek for verified
(10:21):
tickets if they need to.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
Right, they absolutely could, and I highly encourage this. I
can't underscore this enough. By going through seat geek, that's
our official sponsor and our official fan to fan marketplace
for ticket resale. By doing that, you're safeguarded when you
buy on that site. We're living in a day and
age where people are, you know, continue to find ways
(10:42):
to try to list false tickets or counterfeit tickets on
different you know, marketplaces that are out there. You really
will do yourself a big favor and peace of mind
when you transact through seat geek. Those transactions are actually
directly tied into our ticket system here and we're able
to resolve any potential issue that you have there. We're
able to track it. Seegee is able to ensure it,
(11:05):
and so I highly encourage fans, especially since we're in
a sold out situation for the remainder of the year.
We've been sold out all season long. Our fan base
are the best fan base in the country, and they've
come out and drove for this first SEC season. Certainly
helps that we've got the number one team in the
country for sure, But that ability to safeguard that transaction
(11:25):
on the secondary marketplace through sea geek, that's the way
to go.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
Yeah, it makes all the sense.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
So we're A final thing I want to ask you about,
Drew is basketball tickets because we are just around the
corner for basketball and bless his heart, Bick Schaeffer, I
know has had he said, his biggest challenge ever getting
his representative non conference schedule together. Vic and I are
going to visit on the field tomorrow before I record
the pregame interview with Coach Sark and he's going to
(11:53):
talk a little bit about getting ready. And of course
the men's basketball schedule is out and I know that
there you can get a sneak peak of the teams
tomorrow right with the autograph sessions.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
Absolutely, Coach Terry, Coach Schaeffer, our men's team, our women's team,
They're going to be signing autographs out on Bevo Boulevard,
So get there, grab a poster, get your autographs because
basketball season is right around the corner. You know, we're
again blessed that men's basketball season is sold out, So
see geek is your best option for single game tickets
there for men. We do have some availability in women's
(12:26):
basketball season tickets. And if you're not on board right now,
you better get on board because that team is experiencing
meteoric rise under coach Schaefer, and we're going to have
an exciting season. They play competitive, they play hard, they
play tough. It is an exciting, exciting time to be
a Texas Longhorns women's basketball fan as well. So you
know ticket start season tickets started one hundred dollars. I
(12:48):
would say that's an amazing investment for incredible entertainment. Coach
Schaeffer in his style of basketball, it is something exciting.
Speaker 3 (12:56):
To watch, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
Listen, folks need only know who these two things if
nothing else, If nothing else, the return of Rory Harmon
and the sophomore encore for Madison Booker that at the
micro right, Hey, did you, by the way, did you
personally set up since it is Mississippi State coming in
the the F fifteen flyover the one hundred and twenty
(13:21):
second fighter squadron by you militia, did you set that
up yourself?
Speaker 2 (13:25):
It's it's going to be fantastic. And no, we've got
our incredible marketing staff. They've they've set all that up
and they work closely with our veteran of the Fairs
Committee and the military to be able to set that up.
And I believe that they're coming in out of San Antonio,
So you know, we're we're always excited for that. How
about how about those those Choppers that came over last weekend.
(13:46):
That was pretty fantastic.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
Well, that was awesome. We were all looking up in
awe and amazement.
Speaker 1 (13:52):
He's Drew Martin and is as busy of guys you'll
ever run across. And this is going to be a
fabulous weekend set up as all and Drew, I appreciate
you carving out a little bit of time for us
on this best of luck this weekend.
Speaker 3 (14:05):
We'll see you around campus, around the stadium.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
Absolutely, Craig Cameron, keep those Elvis hits coming and guys hook.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
Them, look them indeed.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
All right, that's Drew Martin, Senior Associate a d for
University of Texas Athletics.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
Coming up.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
We'll have Inconceivable here on a Friday afternoon on sports
