Speaker 1 (00:00):
We brought you a couple of conversations with long worn
football players. Let's get another one with our Will Matthews
as he had a chance to sit down with guy
said the Sark said of Jake Majors, Well, first of all.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
He's thirty eight, He's he's not that old, but he is.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
A veteran, a senior and the anchor along Calvin Banks
along that offensive front the center.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Jake Majors with our Will Matthews.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
Jake, it's always a pleasure to talk to you, bro.
You've been here for a minute, and the thing that
I'm interested about is as the games you play the
game more, has it slowed down and have you been
able to share that with like here.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Homies on the on the on the line.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
Yeah, no doubt it's slowed down. And you know, my
big I've always I've mentioned this a couple times in
the past, not directly to you, just to the media
that my biggest goal this year wasn't to you know,
like my personal goal wasn't, you know, go out and
give a this is limited pressure is limited sacks. It
was to mentor and feed into these young guys because

(01:06):
I've played a lot of ball and I know what
mentorship means to someone who's young. So I've had the
ability to mentor guys like Daniel Cruz, Brandon Baker, Nate Kibble,
even those second year guys Kojo, stuff like that, and
it's I take pride in that because I know what
it meant to me being mentored by Sam Cosmy, Derek

(01:29):
kurz Setter, guys like that. So yeah, it has definitely
slowed down to me, and I just really like to
feed into these young guys.

Speaker 5 (01:38):
It's one of my favorite things to do.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
When you were in that position taking advice from Cosme
and you know all the other linemen that you've been around,
how did you position yourself to really be a sponge
to that.

Speaker 5 (01:52):
I just approached it.

Speaker 4 (01:54):
Whether I would literally take down any notes that I
can't so you were writing, Yeah, I mean I would,
if I had my notepad on me or not, I
would some way write it down just remember what they said.
And it wasn't so much to learn. It was just
to see how they mentally processed things. Because I knew

(02:15):
Sam Coused Me and Derek Kursheeda were great football players,
and I wanted to learn how they mentally processed the game,
and that's what was important to me.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
When you are looking at the game as a whole,
is it seems like this coaching aspect is really special?

Speaker 5 (02:30):
Is that something that is exciting for you?

Speaker 3 (02:31):
I mean it's not about taking it after the game,
but like giving it to the next generation.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
So special?

Speaker 5 (02:36):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Are you saying like, yeah, is that something that is
called like that coaching thing kind of pulling you?

Speaker 5 (02:45):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (02:46):
I see there's a lot of positives at coaching, and
I also see the negatives being so close to or
just being here for so long. I do want to
stay close around the game. My biggest goal is to
be a GM in the NFL. Like I've I got
a BBA from Macombs. I want to make good use
of that, eventually getting master's in sports management.

Speaker 5 (03:09):
But if that doesn't work out, I do believe coaching
could be calling my name.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
But you know, right now, my goals to make it
to the NFL and then use that as ability to
network with people. And you know, I know I'm not
going to play forever and once I you know, call
it quits. I would like to journey into the GM side,
whether that's to the front office for scouting, but you know,
I truly believe I can make a difference in the

(03:36):
league being a football player and a GM eventually, so
excited for that.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
So even going off on that thing about being and
making a difference on a team, like you guys are
walking into really what we've been talking about for years.
Like there was the notion that we may go to
the SEC. But it's here, and I know you guys
aren't preparing. It's the same kind of thing, but there's
got to be something that makes it a little bit
more exciting.

Speaker 4 (03:57):
Yeah, I think it's just the just the hype of
it all, Like being announced in twenty twenty one, we
thought it was so far away, and now it's here.
It's like all right, Like now is our chance to
show everybody that, you know, whether you believe or.

Speaker 5 (04:11):
Not, Texas is back and we're here to stay.

Speaker 4 (04:13):
So we're really excited for this opportunity to play in
the SEC. And we just we just got to trust
our coaches, trust the schemes, and trust ourselves and trust
one another and then I think everything will work out.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
That's that's very special. One last thing this week. I
know there's a lot of preparation, but Is there a
guilty pleasure? Is there an ice cream?

Speaker 5 (04:36):
Chocolate?

Speaker 3 (04:36):
Is there something that you're looking forward to, either pregame
or post game?

Speaker 5 (04:42):
This is like a personal question, like you asking like.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
Jesse you, I'm asking you because everybody likes to know.
Are you holding that on to the cuff?

Speaker 5 (04:54):
No? Are you saying like like pregame meal or something
like what are you talking about? Well?

Speaker 3 (05:00):
I know, I know for me, I wasn't really like
a like a like a like a chocolate guy.

Speaker 5 (05:06):
Like ice cream dudes.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
After the game, there was this place I go to
players and I would eat the biggest burger I could pop.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
I gotcha.

Speaker 5 (05:12):
Yeah, So Friday night, everybody digs into the ice cream.
You can't.

Speaker 4 (05:18):
Ice cream kind of has a good amount of carbs
in it, so you're technically carbloading.

Speaker 5 (05:22):
You're just enjoying that sweet treat after the game.

Speaker 4 (05:27):
I always hit up Amy's Man, Amy's too good.

Speaker 5 (05:30):
Mexican vanilla is too good with some cookie dough man.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
It's uh.

Speaker 4 (05:33):
I just feel like I deserve it after a game,
you know, after a football game for sure. Yeah, I
gotta go with ice cream man. My ice cream guy
always have been. Yeah, just want to look.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
Forward to.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
So UH give credit to uh to Will Matthews for
drawing that out of Jake Major's we learned that he really,
really and truly loves ice cream.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
I think Will Matthews loves ice cream. He does ice
stream questions.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
He acted like, he acted like he did what he said.
I didn't really get into it, but he would go
over to Players. Now, was Players still around when you
were in school?

Speaker 2 (06:08):
No? I don't think that was gone. What a great place.
We talked about it before Jeff Howe, because didn't Jeff
Hall love it?

Speaker 5 (06:14):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (06:15):
I love it and so did I and and Players
sat pretty much where the AT and T Hotel and
Conference Center is now. Okay, yeah, right there on them okay,
right before you get to the drag, and it kind
of sat.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
On that little bit of a rise there.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
And really good burger place, really good, real thick French fries.
That is one of the few places where I actually
have eaten and enjoyed a veggie burg a garden burger.
I had one there one time and it was and
it was actually really good. Yeah I did. I think
I had one back a year or so ago at

(06:52):
some place and it was okay, but it wasn't like
what I had at Players. Players was was really cool.
It was just a good place.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
Guy.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
I understand Will Matt, he's going there, and for Jake
majors him going out and finding some ice cream, that
makes sense as well. All Right, we'll be back to
wrap up our number two of the program here on
sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone in the iHeartRadio app.
