Speaker 1 (00:00):
The final hour of the week here of the program
on Sports Radio A and thirteen under the Zone. Glad
to have you with us for hour number three here
on the Zone as we get you ready for the weekend,
a football weekend, a final weekend of the regular season
in Major League Baseball, Team USA dominating the President's Cup
in golf right now. So there's a lot going on,

(00:21):
and we're going to talk some baseball with Gene Watson
from the Chicago White Sox front office coming up in
a few minutes here, But more on the Loghorns. Each week,
of course, we bring you Long Horn weekly with coach Sark.
We record the program on Wednesday evenings at Pluckers the
West Campus location at twenty two to twenty two Reo Grand,

(00:43):
so we're always invited to come out and to hear
the program. You can enjoy some great winnings. You can
actually submit questions for Sark. We have question cards you
can do that. We record the program from six to
seven on Wednesdays. Then the program airs at seven o'clock
on Thursday nights, so it aired last night, and then
on Friday we bring you one segment of that program.

(01:06):
The in specific the segment where sar can I discuss
that week's opponent, in this case, of course, Mississippi State.
So here was the conversation aired last night, recorded Wednesday
night with coach Sark talking about the matchup tomorrow afternoon
against Mississippi State. Talking about this for three years, finally
going to play an SEC Conference game. I got your

(01:28):
thoughts on the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
We are, first of all, it's exciting, and I know
I talk about this in my press conference and on
the radio with you guys DKR. This season has been amazing.
Our fans have been awesome.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
You know.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
I think the other night we had the fifth largest
crowd in DKR history. Okay, in a game that I
think a lot of people thought maybe wasn't going to
be a great game. But for them to come, for
them to stay, for our students to be there, to
you know, to we sang the eyes with them. What
an awesome special time, Which tells me Saturday is going
to be really cool too. To kick off the SEC

(02:04):
at home against Mississippi State should be a great environment
Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs are They're like us in year one,
and I refer to them that way because they're a
dangerous team, just like we were dangerous in your run
and we were trying to figure it out. Coach Levy
is a fantastic offensive coach. They go up tempo, they
change tempos, they take big splits, They've got really good receivers.

(02:26):
They'll run the ball when you deployed people, So that's
the challenging part there. And then defensively as they're trying
to work their way through it, you know, you just
want to make sure you're not turning the ball over
to them and giving them short field because they're too
good offensively, they can attack you.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
You know, you brought this up the other day. When
folks tak coach Levy, they think of it being from
the Arp Briles coaching tree and the real up temping
a lot of passes, but you said, this group likes
to run the ball.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
He loves to run the ball, and you know it
is time at Oklahoma, at his time at Old Miss,
they were, you know, two of the better running teams
in the country when he was there with them. So
you have to to the run first, which is what
we pride ourselves on. But you sure better cover these
wideouts because they've got three four more than capable wide
receivers that can create explosive places.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Now you've been down this road before, just as coach
Levy is dealing with a true freshman starting quarterback and
Michael Van Buren, who's having to.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
Do it with Blake shape it out, Yeah, you know,
making his first career start.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
I'm hoping.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
I'm hoping Longhorn Nation and DKR can make it as
difficult as possible. You know, that's part of the growing
pains of making your first career start, and that's the
way it goes. But hopefully, you know, we can do
some things, like I said, to defend the run, make
them a little bit more one dimensional disguise. Some coverages
create a little bit of pressure, but also create an
environment with our fans that can be one that can

(03:43):
be difficult.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
How about what you see from them defensively, Well, I
think I think the key for us defensively is they've
they've kind of gone back and forth schematically from a
defensive structure standpoint, and who they were the first three
games to who they were last game was dramatically different.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
So for us going into the game and early in
the game is identifying how they're going to try to
defend us and then attack them accordingly. So you know,
it's put a little bit of a challenge on us
because you're preparing for two different defenses. But in the end,
I think it's been good for us because it's it's
forced our players to really dive in and focus on, hey,

(04:19):
the plan and then what direction the plan could go
predicated on the defense, we might get.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
All right there. It is a little bit of a
scouting report there on the Mississippi State Bulldogs coming in,
and clearly, you know what the Loghorns are looking to
do is maintain their vigilance against the run because Mississippi
State is going to try to run the football. You
just heard Sark talk about that they are banged up,

(04:48):
but they do of the ones they do have are healthy.
They've spread it pretty evenly. Devon Booth and Johnny Daniels
in specific, those two guys, and then you have the
true freshman quarterback, Michael van Buren junior. We'll start with there,
but as Sart pointed out, he's got three really good
wide out targets in Kevin Coleman junior, Mario Craver, and

(05:08):
Jordan Mosley. Those guys also they're not afraid to go
to the tight end to do Treiri is the tight end,
so they're not hesitating about going to that as well.
And then on the defensive side, Texas wanting to attack
what the Bulldogs do defensively, and they were respectable in
a couple of things, mainly against the past. They had

(05:30):
some struggles against the run. Basically in the long run, certainly,
we'll try to do that. Coleman Hutzler, formerly of the
Texas coaching staff, is on the is the defensive coordinator
of that Mississippi State team. So there's some thoughts on
the Texas Mississippi State matchup, all right. Coming up next
our weekly Baseball Conversation with Gene Watson from the Chicago

(05:51):
White Sox front office. We'll talk about the pennant races.
All the division races are decided now, but there could
be some wild wild finishes to the wild card races
in both the American League and the National League. And
additionally we'll talk about the you know, the playoffs to come.
The playoffs begin Tuesday of next week, and we're gonna

(06:13):
shift Gino at our weekly conversation do it to a
midweek conversation on that, and then we're gonna get his
thoughts and memories of Oakland, because yesterday was the final
game ever for Major League Baseball leagues as far as
we can tell, at the Oakland Coliseum, with the A's
beating the Rangers three to two. But we'll get Gino's

(06:34):
memories of the Oakland Coliseum. We'll continue here on this
Friday on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone at
