Speaker 1 (00:00):
T New Year on this Tuesday afternoon, updating the baseball
playoff team Kansas City and Baltimore are underway and are scoreless.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Orioles had
the leadoff man aboard with a double. But that's where
it stands right now. And meanwhile in Houston, where this
afternoon it has just been dominance from Trek's scoubell on
(00:24):
the mound through the first six innings, shut out, six
shutout innings against the Houston Astros, and he had to
work himself out of a couple of tight situations, and
they had to check on his health a couple of times,
and he somehow was able to work his way around it.
(00:45):
But he's out of the ball game now. We gave
them six shutout innings on three hits, and so it's
still three nothing. Tigers and the Asters are batting in
the bottom of the seventh inning. All three runs scored
in the top of the second inning for Detroit off
of frommer Valdez, and the Astros have long since gone
to the bullpen a couple of times since then, but
(01:06):
it is three to nothing, Detroit leading Houston's. The Astros
bat now with two outs in the bottom half of
the seventh And remember these are best of three series,
and the winner of this series will get the number
two seed the Cleveland Guardians in the division series. The
(01:28):
Kansas City Baltimore winner will get the Yankees in the
other division series. Then the National League Wildcard Series both
can underway. One will start about forty five minutes from
now in Milwaukee, the Mets against the Brewers. Winter that
series will meet the Phillies and then tonight it'll actually
start about six thirty. Padres and Diamondback not Diamondbacks, Padres
(01:52):
and Braves, and the winner of that series will play
the Dodgers in the divisional series. So anyway, that's where
it is right now, and it's three nothing Tigers the
Astros two out, bottom of the seventh inning at minute
May Park.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
You remember your World Series picks at the beginning of
the year. Uh, yeah, who did you have? Dodgers and Yankees.
I did, and it worked out where they're both the
one seeds.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
I guess it didn't happen quite the way I thought
it would though, because both teams had some injuries. No,
two teams I think had more injuries than the Braves
than the Dodgers this year, and and other than the
Rangers maybe, but of the playoff teams, no two teams
had more injuries than Atlanta and Los Angeles.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
I think they had had the most.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
A brave somehow with win number eighty nine yesterday in
game number one sixty two, were able to slide into
the playoffs. But Chris Sale is not on the playoff roster.
He didn't pitch yesterday in the decisive game against the Mets,
and he is not on the roster at least for
the wild card round.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
So we'll see if it if it happens, the.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
Astros are down in the seventh inning, one two, three,
set down by the Tiger bullpen, so they go to
the eighth.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
They're in Houston.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
It's a three to nothing lead for Detroit on Houston
in Game one. All right, Let's I mentioned that today
was an opportunity for us to visit with Long Worns
basketball head coach Ronny Terry and a chance to watch
the team go through their final forty five minutes of
the workout.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
It's funny.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
Rodney was asked for his impressions of the team, and
he was like, impressions, I've been around these guys first impressions.
He's like, I've been around these guys for months. You
guys are the ones are getting the first impressions. But
he did offer impressions of what he's seen so far.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Yeah, I don't have first impressions.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
I've had him for three months already, so past first
impressions already, as you guys first impression a little bit, right, No,
this is a good group of guys, man. I think
we have a group of guys that virtality group. I
think they really like each other in terms of chemistry
right now.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
You know, we can play a lot of different ways.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
We have older guys, we have a blend of some
young guys that will contrivete and help us this year
as well. So I think all the ingredients of having
a really good team this year.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
And then he was asked about that sea word, the
chemistry thing, because he mentioned it. So somebody said, how's
the chemistry for this year's group compared to the chemistry
of last year's group? And that's not always going to
give you the best response from a head coach.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
Well, again, you know, always say live where your feed are,
so I don't really get caught up from what we
did last year.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
Last year's done right now, it's a whole new year.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
Force you know started this summer with this, with this
group right here, and you know, you really a lot
of times you want chemistry to happen organically with those
guys and us not having really force feed that. This
group's done a great job that all summer. They really
like each other, They like spending time around each other.
They live around each other in terms of the same hallway,
(04:56):
and they see each other every day.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
They don't really have any cliques right now with this group.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
This group is pretty pretty committed to celebrating gas and
says and being great teammates.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
And then he was asking is that something that happens
organically or when he recruits to construct his team, does
he look for that type of chemistry to be able
to naturally come together.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
I think that's a great question.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
You know, how do you how do you go about
selecting the guys or putting together a team. I think
I staffihed it, you know, a really good job this
year identifying guys that we felt fit our culture, guys
that we felt could compliment one another, and uh and
also guys that we thought would be great teammates.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
You have to start with character first. Character for us
is always the most important thing.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
You know. We always say, you know, everybody can't play
here in Texas. Everybody can't coach at Texas, right, you know,
and everything, So you know, the standards are the standards.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
The expectations are there in terms.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
Of what we do and how we go about and
so we're very select in terms of who we bring
into our culture, and I think I staffed does a
great job of ida to find the right guys that
we feel will be great fits.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
All Right, there's some thoughts from Rodney Taylor. We'll hear
some more from RT coming up next hour, and some
more from him tomorrow. We'll also here from Longhorn's head coach,
Steve Sarkisian coming up next hour. We will be back
to wrap up our number two here on Sports Radio
AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
