Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, let's hear some more from log Worn's basketball

(00:02):
head coach Rodney Terry. We heard him talking about the
construction of his team. This was a question that Brian Davis,
our friend Brian Davis, asked him about sod Do you
have to have a senior or grad transfer point guard
in today's age of college basketball?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Can you can you sign a freshman point guard? I mean,
he got to be elite, you know what I mean.
I mean, I mean again, you know what's elite this
day in time. You know, even the best young players
are going to have growing pains, and the most important
thing with young players is just being consistent. We're wanting
to be consistent every day, even some older players, just

(00:45):
being consistent.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
With what you do every day.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
But we have the luxuryer having older, older guards that
hand the ball for us. Right now, Jordan Pope played,
you know, he's played two seasons.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
He's in his third season right now.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
So the junior's played a lot of minutes at the point,
you know, Junior Larry, you know he's in.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
His fifth season. He's played.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
He played a ton of basketball in a lot of minutes.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
You know. In distributing the basketball initiating offense, so they're
they're older guards.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
Trey Johnson will initiate initiate for us as well, because
all our guards have to be.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
The initiate force.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
You know, Kenda Weaver has done a great job making
decisions with the basketball as well. We don't just have
one guy dominate the ball for us, our forwards bringing
the ball up the floor. They have to be able
to initiate offense sports as well, and we we drill
that so they that make it come natural to those
guys in the game.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
You know, Art think gets the rebound, he can bring
it up and hit ahead. You know, Jason Kin hit ahead.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
I think the easier teams to guard is if you
only have one guy can handle basketball.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
So we need multiple ball handlers, multiple.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Guys that can that can initiate offense for us. And
that's that's challenging for a team to deal with defensively.
But you know, when if we take a point guard
that's a freshman, you know, man, we can you know,
we'll we'll figure that out a little bit.

Speaker 3 (01:59):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
We got too pretty good ones right now, so we
feel good about that.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
So after several months of the guys and individual workouts, uh,
and drills going against one another. And then now with
just a week in on the total team practices, does
Rodney Terry get the sense that this team is ready
to stop going up against one another and try to
take on somebody else?

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Well, this is a this is a very competitive group,
and we're playing a lot earlier than we did with
last year's group.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
You know. Right now, this group right now, we're.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Cause you're fighting time when you put a new group together,
you know, that's the biggest thing, guys getting familiar with
one another. You know, we're changing jerseys, letting different guys
play with each other, you know.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
In my mind, again, I think in the.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Last two years is what's made us really good is
we've had you know, guys up to eight guys, nine
guys that could start for us.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
You know. And again I think we're in that same
position right now. We could have eight, you know, nine
guys that could that could start for us, you know,
and stuff.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
So, Uh, I think that versatility, uh, you know, gives
us an opportunity to play earlier.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
Get more familiar with each other.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
But right now I think there's super competitive against Orange
and Gray right now.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
Really stuff, So we're able to put.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
Everybody all in one color, then we're all together.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
I think we'll be competitive as well. It's a pretty
competitive group.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Roddy's referring to the fact that he's got the group
split into those who wear orange jerseys and those who
wear great ones. And that's what eve an orange against gray.
When they all are wearing the same uniform color, they'll
be effective when they get on the floor. He was
asked about the leadership part of not having a Brock
cunning him after six years in a Texas uniform. I

(03:31):
think I saw yesterday from Rocky's starting a season. Is Holland,
is it?

Speaker 3 (03:35):
I think so?

Speaker 1 (03:36):
He Holland or Belgium. I think it was one of
the low countries. I think it was. I think Belgium. Okay, yeah,
like I said, in Belgium, Holland, the low countries over there. Yeah,
I think.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Don't ask me how to pronounce the team name. But
he will be starting five year old. That's very good,
very good.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
Somebody asked Roddy, has anybody taking over Brocks stepped into
his shoes in that kind of area.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Bill brock Brock was a guy that again played to win.
He may win and plays for us. He's one of
those guys that that over the latter part of his
career really you know, took a lot of investment and
leadership for our program as well. I think right now,
you know, I think we're still emerging and who's gonna
emerge in terms of being a leader on.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
This team, Because the best teams we've.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Been around a player led, you know, and that coach led,
The player led coach is gonna do his job, but
but player led teams that really hold each other accountable.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
You know, Kendall makes winning plays.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
He plays with the kind of effort that that Brock
Cunningham played with. I think Julie larry Will played with
that same kind of energy and activity likewise and stuff.
But you know, I can go right down the list
of a number of guys that we got to take
defense really personal and want to guard and defend at
a high level.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
And then he was also asked about Trey Johnson, the
tremendous freshman coming in and he is kind of lit
up to know. You just watch him in practice, you
can see how explosion and dynamic he can be.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
So he was asked how.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
Dynamic and game changing has Trey Johnson been to this point.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
Tray's been really good. You know.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
I think just like any young player, you know, I
think that the biggest adjustment for them and growth curve
for them is just being consistent with what you bring
every day in terms of your energy, your effort, you know,
your body language. Those are the things that you really
pay attention to with young players like like Trey, who's
highly skilled.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
He's a shot.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Maker, you know, He's a guy that over the course
of summer, I think he's gotten better with his decision making,
as will, and he'll be an initiate some offense sports too,
as will.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
But with young players, all of them.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
I mean, go out down the list of all the
guys we've had in this program that I've been a
part of, whether it's KD you know, TJ Ford, you
know DJ, any of those guys.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
It's just being consistent with what you bring every day.
All right.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
There It is some more from Rodney Terry. We'll here's
some more from him tomorrow as well. Updating the baseball
Milwaukee's first three hitters, all batters, all reached that with
a run scoring. It's one nothing, Brewers. They have the
bases loaded, with one out against Louis Severino, and again
the Orioles and Royals one nothing Kansas City with Baltimore

(06:08):
batting in the bottom of the seventh inning, And in
case you didn't hear it, Tiger's got three runs in
the second and made it stand up. They held on
got out of a bases loaded situation in the ninth
to beat the Astros in Game one in Houston, three
to one. We'll be back to wrap up today's program
on sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the
iHeartRadio app.
